Ilovebas-ket-

ball. Toobad itdoes notlove me. Irolled myleft ankleplaying re-cently.That’s mygoodankle.

“Why keep playing if you’re just going to hurtyourself?” my wife asked.

Why keep living if you’re just going to die? Isaid.

“Why do you always answer me with a ques-tion?”

The crutches were still on the porch from lasttime. I used them to go get x-rays. While waiting Igot an email on my laptop: “Nothing’s hotter than aguy who can dunk,” it said.

I heard this while leaving my gym,” wroteDaniel Hawkin, whom I’d never met but seemed toknow all about me. “Two girls were watching a 3-on-3 basketball game which abruptly ended whenthe biggest guy jumped, knocked the defender flaton his a** and dunked on him while he was layingsprawled on the blacktop.”

What kind of gym has a blacktop floor? I won-dered. But I kept reading.

“That’s when the blonde cheekily whisperedthis confession to her smoking-hot Asian friend inpink sweatpants: ‘Nothing’s hotter than a guy whocan dunk.’ ‘Uh huhhh!’ the Asian hottie whim-

pered.”

I could dunk through my 30s, back when I hadto be fit to avoid the dinosaurs. All that’s left arememories. In college friends and I would play hoopsat a nearby playground, where Mimi M. watched, adding to my incentive to jam (and frequency thechain nets ripped my fingers).

I dunked during one game when the guy cover-ing me was a junkie. He didn’t sprawl on his a** onthe asphalt, just freaked out and could not continue.

My dunking ended when I took up running.Nothing like pounding 50 miles a week horizontallyto trash leg muscles used to spring vertically. Turn-ing 40, 50 and 60 were also factors.

Daniel’s letter reminded me of all I have givenup. OK, not really. Mimi and I stayed platonicfriends, to my chagrin. Cheeky blondes and smok-ing-hot Asians whimpering “Uh huhhh!” were hardto come by.

I married a woman who shared my later-in-lifelove for running. She’s still going even though I’mnot, thanks to what pounding too many miles over-did to my right ankle. Basketball, played at a loweraltitude, once more beckons.

My hopes to re-find my hops — and take onelast crack at those hotties — seemed kaput till I readDaniel’s email further.

“Breakthrough research,” he wrote, “has sur-faced about the exact ‘levers’ which allow people tojump ridiculously high. Now the world’s highest(vertically, I assumed) dunker is selling a bada** pro-gram that can transform regular guys who can’t eventouch the rim into dudes who can dunk with twohands every time with ease.”

Fountain of youth, here I come! Mimi may be agrandma now, but look out Asians sizzling in pinksweatpants!

With both ankles crippled, I am finally bal-anced and signing up for this bada** program. In notime I’ll be jumping higher and so hot no one willtouch me. (Wait ... was that my problem in collegetoo?)

“What you need,” said my wife when I told hermy latest strategy, “is to stop treating symptoms anddeal with causes.”

Like what?

“How you sprained your brain,” she said.

They seem ubiquitous — headphones or ear-buds. For quite a while runners have beenlistening to music while they run. First it

was with those rather-cumbersome headsets. Withthe advance of technology, those have been replacedby the ever-so-small earbuds.

I’m a Luddite when it comes to technology. So Iasked my son, Matt, about these music-loving run-ners. He said most use an iPod or some other suchdevice. Many of these can hold 300 or more songsthat can be cycled through like CDs on their play-ers. That can total 15 to 20 hours of music. Shouldbe enough to handle most long runs.

Some studies have shown listening to music canmake running seem easier. Perceptions of difficultycan be diminished by as much as 10 percent, espe-cially on slower runs. Music can also elevate one’smood, reducing fatigue and tension. Listening canmotivate some runners, especially those who findrunning “boring.” Still more research is being con-ducted — some, for example, with the synchroniza-tion of pace or stride rate with music’s beat.

I’ve often wondered about the dangers of runningthis way. On the roads, wearing earbuds can be haz-ardous. One of our senses is removed from our naturalsafety mechanisms. Runners who listen to musicshould be extra vigilant with their other senses.

Safety aside, I was curious about what music/songsMichigan runners prefer. I’ve never felt any desire touse earbuds or headsets, but during races I’ve enjoyedsome of the music on the courses. Hearing “Nowhereto Run” blasting from a boombox during the last mileof the Crim always perked me up, a least a little. Buton daily runs, nope, I’ve never listened.

So I asked about a dozen state runners. My in-formal poll surprised me. The overwhelming major-ity of respondents claimed they preferred to runwithout music. That doesn’t quite match up withthe national magazines’ stories or number of earbudsI see in races and otherwise.

At first I thought my results might be a genera-tional thing. Younger runners, more comfortablewith technology, are more apt to run with music …maybe. Older runners, perhaps out of years-oldhabits or due to the need to just get away from thestresses of daily life, would rather be alone with theirthoughts … maybe.

Regardless, here are responses I received to thesequestions: Do you run with music? If so, what areyour favorite one or two songs?

Of the folks I surveyed, Anthony Targan was byfar the most enthusiastic booster of running withmusic. “Running songs is a topic near and dear tomy heart,” he said. In fact, his first Michigan Run-

ner article eight years ago was on this subject.

Targan’s personal favorites include “RunningDown a Dream” by Tom Petty and “Help! I’m Alive”by Metric. “I generally run to music when I’m train-ing alone, but never with others,” he told me. ”I al-ways used to race with music, but now only use itfor marathons when I need the distraction.”

He now ditches the earbuds for shorter races. “Ireally want to be focused on listening to my body,”Targan said.

My son Matt, who runs with earbuds, likes“Mother” by Danzig and wrestling theme songs. (Yes,it embarrasses a father to hear that.) He recently startedlistening to podcasts, a variety of radio shows recordedand put online available for download.

MR’s 2015 Michigan Women’s Runner of theYear Sarah Boyle told me, “I’m in the same boat asyou. I don’t ever run with music.

”I am never bored without it,” she continued.“People are my best company when I can have themalong for a run.”

National senior running ace Doug Goodhueechoed those comments. But he did recall, “When Ifirst started racing, the songs ‘Takin’ It to the Streets’by the Doobie Brothers and ‘Start Me Up’ by theRolling Stones inspired me.”

“I have never run with music,” said Andy Mu-chow, another former ROTY, “Somehow it takesaway from my run.”

He cited the dangers of “blanking out on theworld around you,” but mostly it’s more personal. “Ilike to hear the sound of my footsteps and the worldaround me,” Muchow said. “Sometimes, like at apark, it’s better than others, but I couldn’t imagine

taking away that sense.

“I guess I can understand if you are warming upor need to be in yourself for the moment,” he con-tinued. “Or maybe for distraction on the dreadmill.I do have good memories of the team blasting ‘Bornto Run’ before and after cross country meets in col-lege. I roll that into good memories of teammatesand competition.

“Otherwise, mark me down in the column ofrarely listening to music while running,” Muchow said.

Longtime runner, swimmer and kayaker PattyPape now spends much of her exercise time walking atleast three miles a day. “I walk with the girls between 6and 7 a.m. on weekdays,” she said. “We listen to theowls, hawks, mourning doves and coyotes — when wearen’t talking and gossiping, updating one another onour lives. That’s more fun that music.”

Mark Cryderman doesn’t use earbuds either.“When I’m running,” he said, “it’s a great time to thinkand plan. It’s kind of my church. Running the trails ofMilford and Kensington lets me take in the beauty ofnature: the woods, rivers, lakes and occasional deer orwild turkey giving me an inquisitive look as I pass. Ican also see the individuals, couples and families enjoy-ing these things, too, each in their own way.

“There’s too much going on to be distracted bymusic,” he declared.

“I don’t run with music at all at this time,” said2015 MR Senior Runner of the Year Eric Stuber.“But Brooke, my wife, listens to ‘80s rock on Pan-dora when she runs alone.

“I used to listen to ‘Classic Rock Block PartyWeekends’ when I was marathon training more than20 years ago,” he continued. “But now I just run bymyself with only the world singing its tune.”

Lauren Hubbell doesn’t use earbuds, but runswith music anyway. “I often find myself singing inmy head,” she said.

“I had a friend who got a song stuck in his headduring an 18-mile training run. That song? ‘TheWitch Doctor.’ You know, the one that goes, ‘Ooh-eee-ooh-ah-ah, ting tang, walla-walla bing-bang’? Isthere a more annoying song to have stuck in yourhead? I think not!”

Dave Minier threw a wrinkle into his reply. “Isometimes sing off-key while running, just to makemy fellow runners sick,” he said. “I don’t wear theearmuffs or other devices for fear I might not hear a16-wheeler closing in on me.”

So my conclusion? I’ll just have to do more re-search. - MR -

Almost all researchon the subjecthas concluded

some running is goodfor us. The fact you arereading this in a runningmagazine means I likelydon’t have to sell you onrunning’s virtues. We allknow it’s been linked tobenefits such as loweringblood pressure and cho-lesterol, controllingweight and reducingstress.

The question is “How much running is toomuch?”

The answer lies somewhere between “That runfelt good” and getting injured. The 38-year-old me wascomfortable with 100 miles a week; the 68-year-old mefigures anything more than 40 might prove unwise.

I believe in the “Listen to your body” philoso-phy. If something hurts, I back off. I don’t want ascientific study to dictate how much I run.

Yet a recent Danish study says I’d be healthier ifI ran a lot less. Let me share its findings.

Research conducted by the Copenhagen HeartStudy and published in the Journal of the AmericanCollege of Cardiology followed 1,098 healthy joggersand 3,950 non-joggers for about 12 years. By its end,28 joggers and 128 non-joggers had died. The data ledto the conclusion that high-mileage runners died at thesame rate as folks who just loafed on the couch.

The researchers, as they examined the data fur-ther, concluded that, “Although joggers as a groupappear to live longer than sedentary non-joggers,light and moderate joggers have lower mortalityrates than sedentary non-joggers.”

What they said next caught my attention:“Strenuous joggers — people who ran faster than 7mph for more than four hours a week, or who ran

faster than 7 mph for more than 2.5 hours a weekwith a frequency of more than three times a week –died at a rate not statistically different from that ofthe sedentary group.”

The data seems to say the reward for runningfaster than 9-minute miles leads to a death rate equalto non-runners. The study went on to say that a 5-mph jogging pace, for one to 2.4 hours per weekover two or three days, is best for longevity.

The researchers did note that study participantsself-reported their running habits, which may leadto error or bias. They also wrote the 127 participantsidentified as strenuous joggers may have been toosmall a group to accurately calculate mortality risk.

The Copenhagen study has been cited in theNew York Times, highlighted in TV news segmentsand appeared in various fitness and health publica-tions, making it inevitable you will asked, “Is all thatjogging really good for you?” (Even after all theseyears, I still hate the term “jogging.”)

I’m not normally a science denier but if this studyis true, I may drop dead on a trail run about the timeanother sedentary soul my age keels over on the couch.

I can live with that. To me it’s about quality oflife. I look forward to that feel-good time of the daywhen I head out for a run. The rhythm of movingfeet going down the road, flow of random thoughtsstreaming through my head, and the sights andsounds of passing scenery, as well as the emotionallift running gives me, can’t be measured by scienceyet are vital to my well-being.

The Danish study says if I cut my five hours ofrunning a week in half I might live longer, but Iwouldn’t be happier. For me what they call “toomuch running” is really not enough.

So I will set science aside and keep running dis-tances that feel right for me at a pace I choose andsuffer the consequences.

PLYMOUTH (3/8/2015) — Nick Stanko outbat-tled Tony Filipek to eke out a victory at the KonaShamrock 5K, presented by the Kona Running Co.

“With about a mile to go I started pressing, butTony hung on,” said Stanko, 34, of Ann Arbor.

Filipek, 26, of Rochester Hills cracked open afew yards’ edge in the last 800 yards. But Stankocame back.

“I thought I had him. But Nick never gave up,”said Filipek, who knocked shoulders with Stanko asthey crossed the finish line. Both timed 15:42,Stanko a toe ahead.

Their hot finish capped an otherwise-frigidmorning. Close to 2,800 entrants, some dressed asleprechauns and others as fairy folk, braved thecold to get an early start on their St. Patrick’sDay festivities.

UTICA (3/21/2015) — The starting line at thisyear’s Bill Roney Memorial 5K looked like a who’swho of Michigan Runners of the Year.

Among the 575 entrants the Michigan RunnerSeries event were Krys Brish, 51, ofMilford; Nicholas Stanko, 34, of Ann Arbor; EricGreen, 46, of Pontiac and Lisa Veneziano, 50, ofFenton — all of whom have graced MR covers asRunners of the Year. The field also included Matt

Fecht, 31, of Warren and Clint Verran, 39, ofRochester Hills, who have won ROY Open Malehonors.

None could keep up with defendingRoney champ Jon Rock, 25, of Wixom, who blazedto a 14:38 clocking, 16 seconds better than his timelast year.

Rock, a former U.S. Air Force Falcon, attacked

the course like a raptor, tearing open a big lead onthe first mile. “I went out kind of quickly,” he said.“My first mile was around 4:30 or below. Maybe toofast. Overall, though, I’m glad I was aggressive.

. ”It’s phenomenal to run a against talent likeTony Filipek, Clint Verran, Matt Fecht and NickStanko,” Rock continued. “My friend Melanie Bren-der and sister Jen Rock were here to keep me in-spired.”

Stanko and Verran battled for the runner-upspot. “Clint and I were together for pretty much thewhole race,” said Stanko. “He sat on me, which wasa good idea considering the wind. Every now andthen I would try to drop him. I’d hear his breath-ing less and less, but he’d catch back up.

“He put in a couple of moves in the last mileand tried to drop me. Then it was down to thekick. Luckily I had something left,” he said.

Stanko outsprinted Verran to claim second,15:08 to 15:11. Next came Filipek, 26, of Rochesterin 15:17 and Fecht, 31, of Warren in 15:29. ScottFiske, 51, of St. Claire Shores won masters honorsin 17:12.

Alexandria Vintevoghel, 23, of Casco, used adifferent tactic than Rock, going out conservatively. She waited until the second mile before taking thewomen’s lead.

“I was trying for a six-minute-mile pace,” Vin-tevoghel said. “When I realized I was a bit underthat, I said, ‘OK, let’s go with that.’”

Vintevoghel, running her first race since gradu-ating from Kent State University, won in 18:17, a5:54-mile pace. “I’m working toward a halfmarathon in May,” she said. “This was a good step-ping stone toward that.”

Kristin Olsen, 26, of South Boardman came insecond in 19:01. Veneziano, the first womanmaster, was third overall in 19:11. Next cameJenna Anderson, 17, of Sterling Heights(19:49), Laura Shamblin, 47, of Washington(20:15) and Brish (20:17).

Some years back Imade a runningchange. I showed

up for a group run withstrangers in a city manypeople steer clear of.

I moved from a smalltown in Montana to goto college in Detroit.People from home triedto talk me out of it, butdoing so let me notice abeautiful, changing city.

I have fallen in lovewith Detroit’s spirit.. Itis one of my friends’ andmy weekly playgrounds, with no two runs thesame. Once I lost agame while playing with

a running friend. The reward was changed into pen-nies and spread along roads of our routes. Since thatday I’ve stopped for change.

Joining the Downtown Detroit Runners andWalkers has been the best change I’ve found. It tooka couple times (OK more) of me showing uptimidly when I knew no one. Now we religiouslyhuddle up, no matter the weather, to run the streets.

Members’ paces are as varied as their personali-ties. You can run fast, treating the get-together as atempo. There are leaders and chasers. Or you canrun and chat with some of the greatest storytellersthere may be.

We have dedicated walkers. Some weeks mem-bers push youngsters in strollers. Paces can collidebecause we just want to stick together. You can pushyourself to hold a pace for as long as possible, thenfall off to recover, knowing week by week you toowill change and keeping up the whole run is not outof reach.

Like the city we run, our group is rich in run-ning history. It started long before it was trendy torun the D. Each Tuesday we run from a different es-tablishment and do 4- or 6-mile routes mapped for

runners and walkers. This lets us explore every nookand dead-end street in town if we come long andoften enough.

Each run brings new roads and changing viewsof the city. These roads paved the way for the rest ofthe world to follow. Our soles meet the asphalt, cob-blestones, bricks and grit that is Detroit in a rhyth-mic cadence. We see urban art painted on buildingwalls, pre-Depression architecture at The Guardianand Art Deco at the Penombscot building. We seethe skyline, Hamtramck’s culture, take in smells ofMexican Village, midtown’s economic upswing. Wetake in Corktown, Wayne State (my alma mater),glorious cathedrals, the Packard plant, museum dis-trict, the Dequindre Cut and urban gardens’blooms.

We see the Ambassador Bridge as the sun sinksinto the Detroit River; shimmering pinks, blues andpurples that wrap the sky as a final gift of the day.

Ships’ navigation lights twinkle, remindingus of the start of Michigan’s waterwaycommerce and first days of forts and furtrading.

I see fellow book lovers out for walksand enjoying the lending libraries on theRiverwalk and Cass Avenue. We swooshpast Detroiters who cheer us on as theywait for buses or the People Mover.

We sense the strong people who’vecome before us and continue to write thestory that builds Detroit. These roads haveseen more change than any one run couldcapture. Now we are adding to that her-itage.

Upon returning, we enjoy the cuisineof the night’s establishment, drinks and ca-maraderie. We may not always await ourruns eagerly, but can’t wait to come backnext week.

GROSSE ILE (3/29/15) — In like a lamb, out likea lion. So goes Michigan March weather, which is al-ways volatile as winter turns to spring.

So it was no surprise wind-chills in the teens atthe Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon gave way to sun-shine and temperatures near 40. The fifth-year race(CF = Cystic Fibrosis) is the brainchild of EmilySchaller, who started it in 2011 hoping to attract afew hundred runners. It came in like a lion from thestart.

“That first year we had 1,450 runners from 17states,” said Schaller. “It blew our minds.” The racehas grown in number of runners, supporters, volun-teers (more than 300) and dollars raised to supportthe Rock CF Foundation each year since.

“This year we have 2,300 runners from all overthe U.S. and Canada, and raised more than$100,000 to increase the quality of life for patientsliving with cystic fibrosis,” said Schaller. “The mostspecial part is we have more than two dozen peopleliving with CF who run or walk the half marathon,5K and relay events. These are the true rock starsand reason we put on this race.”

Schaller herself is a runner living with CF.When she was 18 months old, wrote Nancy Averettin her 2010 Runner’s World article “Fresh Air: Run-ning helps a patient with cystic fibrosis clear herlungs and add years to her life,” doctors told Emily’sparents she wouldn’t live to age 18. They predictedshe would struggle to breathe and be sickly andweak during her short life.

Now in her 30s, Schaller keeps proving the doc-tors wrong and credits running for helping in her re-covery. Women’s masters winner Nicole Derrick ofGrosse Isle is proud of the director for “havinggrown this race into a major local event in just a fewyears. She is making a difference in many CF pa-tients’ lives.

“Everything about this race is great,” continuedDerrick. “The course is beautiful, running along the

river for the vast majority. I get nostalgic thinking ofthe times I’ve run or ridden my bike on the sameroads. I loved seeing so many enthusiastic volunteersout there. And who can’t love the homemade cook-ies at the end!”

“What a well-organized race and beautifulcourse!” exclaimed Erin Larusso of Ypsilanti. “It’sthe only race I’ve run where the volunteers werethanking me for running.”

Anita Harless of Holly got caught up in themoment and finished like a lion stalking its prey. “Ifound a guy to keep my focus on,” she said, “andslowly closed the gap. I wanted to see the finish linebefore trying to pass him. With the finish a couplehundred feet ahead and crowds alongside me, Imade my move. People were shouting, the an-nouncer got excited and the adrenaline pumpedthrough my veins like a lunatic. I found a gear I did-n’t know I had and beat him!”

Other race-day rock stars included half-marathon men’s winner Scott Smith of Warren(1:16:18), women’s champ Kelsey Bragg of Fenton(1:24:45), male masters king Merlin Elsner(1:18:52) and “Runnin’ Strong” (first out of 128relay teams in 1:32:17). Winning the 5K were JohnOlszewski of Macomb (overall and men’s masterschamp in 17:58), Brittany Galisdorfer of Detroit(women’s overall in 21:03), and female master GosiaLatala of Grosse Ile (21:14).

As for my own half-marathon, I went in like alion (starting strong and overly confident) and fin-ished like a Detroit Lion (fading badly down thestretch). Still, on this beautiful course — which in-cluded a stretch through an airplane hangar andalong an airfield — it was a great day just to breathdeeply and appreciate the gift of running.

Gear Talk. I don’t recall what the initial Facebookpost said or asked, but well down the line (it got alot of responses) was this reply about wearing ear-buds for music while running; ”I do it because ofthe monotony (in running).”

I’m impartial about those ”tuned-in” on therun except in races where they mute/block thevoices of announcements/directions of race offi-cials. Frankly, I find that maddening. Seemsaround half of those I see running have wires run-ning from their ears with about half them doingso in races. Why people wear earbuds is theirbusiness, but hearing somebody say they do so be-cause they find running monotonous tweaked mynose.

I’ve never tuned into music while running andI’ve run enough miles to circle the globe at the equa-tor more than three times. I never, not once, foundrunning monotonous. I’m not sure what othersaren’t seeing about running I see.

Understand I love my music and have waymore than my share at home, but listening on therun would be far too distracting for me, thus zeroappeal. I’m entertained by the activity (running) andthings around me, thoughts assembling and givingway to others.

What I do find monotonous are treadmills, my

bike trainer and indoor tracks. I’ve never been on atreadmill and barely tolerate the trainer, a necessaryevil in winter. Be happy you can run in winter; cy-cling in it takes a hearty will.

In a similar vein, I note all those who sharetheir mileage figures from various electronic devices. When the total is spelled out in tenths (greater orless than half ) and hundredths, I’m humored by theneed for such precision. I’m humored because thatseems fussy, bordering on finicky. I’ve alwaysrounded off to the nearest half or whole mile — andeven then I was guessing. This coming from a guyimmersed in the world of measuring courses for cer-tification, bringing them to a point as accurate andfinite as tools allow.

You’d think I’d be all about numbers in mytraining log that reflect ”true” mileage. Not oncehave I taken my measuring bike around a training orrace loop to check mileage. Why not? I’ve nevercared to know the ”exact” distance. I’d convert timerun, a precise measure, to miles (based on averagepace). This works for a couple reasons: it was closeenough for my purposes and I’d no desire to becomea slave to my miles.

Hey, what works for you is key, something ofsubstance, not necessarily better than another way ofdoing things, but valuable in its own way.

Run This Way. I rarely recommend races herebut am overdue. I have my favorites: the Fifth ThirdRiver Bank 25K, Dexter-Ann Arbor half marathon,Volkslaufe 20K, Crim 10-mile and Detroit FreePress Marathon. I’ve measured, worked at and/orrun them all. Rich race histories. Here in my home-town of Fenton we have the Bastille Day 15K inJuly, a race you love to fear for its rural feel and hills, hills and more hills.

Only the Munising Pictured Rocks halfmarathon is tougher. The U.P. race is a big favoriteof mine also. Arriving in town for it, you can’t seewhat you’re in for, but the road lifts after barely halfa mile. Fair to add what goes up, comes down.

But that going up is for those who love runningand enjoy a challenge. I’ve never run the course butI’ve cycled and raced a bike over the roads manytimes. Love the terrain, love the way it works themind and body!

Answer: Paula Radcliffe of England for the women; Haile Gebrsellasie of Ethiopia for the men.

ANN ARBOR (3/29/15) — They endured finger-numbing, cheek-burning cold and merciless hills, yet still crossed the Ann Arbor Marathon finish linein droves. More than 2,100 runners and walkerscompleted the 5K, 10K, half marathon andmarathon.

Women’s marathon winner Jana Sedlacek, 21,of Okemos thrived in the below-freezing weather. “Iwas afraid it was going to be too cold,” said theMichigan State University veterinary student. “But Ished some layers at the start — and it was beauti-ful.”

Wearing a long-sleeved Spartan shirt in Wolver-ine country, Sedlacek received a few jeers alongwith many cheers. She kept her eyes on the prize thewhole way.

“I was with a guy holding a 3:05-pace sign thewhole way,” said Sedlacek, who finished in 3:04:55.“He was awesome. This was a PR by almost fiveminutes.” She won her first 26.2-miler, the 2013Lansing Marathon, in 3:09:22.

Next came Angela Carron, 36, of Canton(3:14:19) and the masters queen Josephine Weeden,46, of Saline (3:19:29).

Men’s winner Zachary Ornelas, 23, of AnnArbor also ran faster than he’d expected, clocking2:34:22. The former University of Michiganstar won the 2013 Detroit Free Press Marathon in2:20:11, but it was on a much flatter course withbetter weather.

“The hills here were unrelenting,” said Or-nelas. “The flattest section was in Gallup Park.

Everything else was hills.”

The winner also battled Nick Stanko, 34,of Ann Arbor. “He (Stanko) dropped a pretty goodsurge with 10 miles to go,” said Ornelas. “I had an-other big race (the Boston Marathon) coming up, soI stayed controlled and eventually caught back up.”

“I took the lead around 17 miles,” saidStanko. “We were clicking along at 5:30 or 5:40miles. I didn’t want to go (for the lead) that soon, but I sensed a gap opening so I tried to take advan-tage. Sometimes that works out, sometimes itdoesn’t.

“Zach caught me at 23 miles, maybe 24, andkept clicking along, just holding a steady pace. Itried to hang on but kind of fell apart. This was thehardest marathon I’ve ever run. It was a humbling

Stanko finished 1:47 back in 2:36:09, followedby Alex White, 30, of Washington Township(2:44:36). Rich Power, 51, of Rochester led the malemasters and fifth overall in 2:52:41.

Recent U-M graduate Justin Waraniak, 22,who now lives in Fenton won the men’s halfmarathon in 1:14:11. Honolulu native ChristinaWong, 25, paced the women in 1:29:16.

“I was worried when I woke up thismorning and saw the temperature was 17 degrees, said Wong, now a U-M law student. “Consideringmy training, it was a solid effort.”

Stephane Denoual, 36, a Frenchman wholives in Ann Arbor, ran away with the men’s 10K in37:31. Former Western Michigan University stand-out Lauren McUmber, 23, of Jackson, led thewomen in 40:24.

“I started a little fast,” saidMcUmber, who went through the 5K mark at19:18. “So I slowed a little bit after that. But mytime is a PR. My old one was 41:30.”

Claiming 5K titles were Glenn Collins, 30, ofCleveland, Ohio (16:18) and Lauren Hutchens, 39,of Ann Arbor (20:34).

“It was so cold I couldn’t feel my feet,”Hutchens said with a shiver. “I was registered for thehalf marathon until an hour ago, then decided to dothe 5K instead. I’m glad I did.”

The event, which also included a kids dash, raised money for the Ann Arbor Public Schools Ed-ucational Foundation and education-based nonprof-its. For complete race results, go tohttp://theannarbormarathon.com.

ANN ARBOR (4/1/15) — Although the TwinkieRun took place on April Fool’s Day, its recordturnout was no joke.

The field for this 5K, presented by Ann ArborActive Against ALS and held at Gallup Park, rose to658, up almost 200 from 2014.

Shawn Jyawook started the Twinkie Run inmemory his friend Jim Mong, who died from ALS(aka Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2009. Many runnersand walkers came out specifically to support the bat-tle against that illness.

The race also owes its growth to the popularityof the Twinkie. Running and cream-filled cakesdon’t go together as seamlessly as baseball and hotdogs. But entrants did consume many Twinkies.

The rules go as follows: At the start of the race, you eat a Twinkie, run a lap in Gallup Park, then scarf down another Twinkie. Then you run an-

other lap and finish. You don’t have to eat a Twinkie. But those who eat one deduct a minute from theirtime. Those who eat two subtract two minutes.

Craig Ringbloom, 28, of Monroe took advan-tage, winning with a 17:22 (19:22 actual, less twoTwinkies). “I struggled with the first one,” he said.“I washed down the second with water and thatworked better.”

Slauson Middle School eighth-grader ZacWilliston, 13, ran the day’s fastest time, 18:23, butonly consumed one Twinkie and thus placed secondby one second. Two-Twinkie eater Alex Williams,30, finished third with an adjusted 18:26.

Angie Markel, 39, of Dexter crossed the finishfirst for the women in 20:33. She ate one Twinkie, which reduced her time to 19:33 and gave her theoverall victory. “It sat heavy,” she said. “It was toughto get down.”

Next came two-Twinkie eaters Chloe Brittain,14, of Wheeler (an adjusted 19:56) and DanieMatasik, 43, of Chelsea (20:00).

Most of the field ate both Twinkies, plus oneor two after the race. Some brought their own fora homemade Twinkie contest won by GrayceLangheine and her daughter, Jasmine Bigelow.

“We made a red velvet cake Twinkie withcream cheese filling, then dipped it in coconut,”said Langheine.

“Getting the cream cheese stuffing insideit was hard,” said Bigelow.

The race was an Ann Arbor Track Clubevent. For complete results, go to activeagain-stals.org.

Small world, get-ting an email fromRich Perlberg

about a cool, crazy 5Kthe Brighton Rotary isputting on June 20 atMt. Brighton. I used towork with Rich at theObserver & EccentricNewspapers, a chain oftwice-weekly papers insuburban Detroit, in theearly and mid-1980s. Ihadn’t heard from him

in 25 years, at least.

I’d been a sportswriter at the Detroit Free Pressas a young punk in the 1970s, got divorced andmessed up with cocaine, quit work and started cut-ting lawns for a living.

The same summer I was cutting lawns, 1981, Ifigured I needed to show my ex-bosses I was cleanagain and couldn’t think of a better way to do thatthan to run a marathon, although I had no desire tobe a runner.

So I’d cut lawns for 10 hours a day, then headout for however many miles the marathon trainingschedule I had taped to my fridge called for.

As the summer ended, the job ended too. Lucky forme, Mike Arnholt, a former copy editor in the FreePress sports department who had taken a manage-ment position at the O&E, gave me a job.

I was something of an idiot savant. I’d had nojournalism training when I got hired to sharpenpencils just out of college at the Free Press, and itwas only through a series of flukes that I ended up asa sportswriter. There wasn’t anyone better at writingup a hockey game that ended at 10:15 with a dead-line of 10:30. That was the savant part, but I reallyknew nothing about being a reporter.

The O&E changed that. I floated around thevarious newspapers, working on special projects orfilling in for people on vacation. Editors knew theywere getting a good writer when I hired on. Theyhad no idea they were getting a completely un-schooled reporter who had never been to a citycouncil meeting, or inside a courtroom or didn’tknow how to reach people by phone to cover thekinds of basic news stories community newspapersthrive on.

Rich and others patiently taught me how to dothe basics. I thought I’d work a year or so at theO&E and move back to the Freep. Instead, I stayedeight years before moving on to magazine work and

writing true-crime books for St. Martin’s Press.

It was true crime that hooked up Rich and meagain. In March, he stopped at a place in WestBranch and was surprised to see books I had writtenon a little stand by the cash register. He bought onecalled “Darker Than Night” about two Detroit-areadeer hunters who went missing in 1985 near Mioand were never seen, again.

Eighteen years later a great state cop namedBronco Lesneski, working the old case on his owntime, solved it and got convictions on two scumbagbrothers.

The short author’s bio in the book told Rich Iwas working at Crain’s Detroit Business and was amarathon runner. He was able to get an e-mail forme at work and send a note.

“I grabbed the one about the murder of the twohunters in Mio, since I grew up in that neck of thewoods. I was long gone when it happened but recallthe story,” Rich wrote. “It was a good read and afairly-brutal rendition of some people’s lifestyle inthat part of the state.”

One good turn — him buying the book, which

will mean 50 cents in royalties to me next year —leads to another: a plug for a race he is helping puton. Funny how life works out. Who would havethought that when I started learning how to be areal reporter under him and others, just as I was torun what I was sure would be my first and lastmarathon, the 1981 Free Press, 34 years later he’d be helping put on races and I’d still be running and, better yet, writing about running for Michigan Run-ner.

I’ve been to the event Web site, topofthemoun-taindashorcrash.com, and it looks like a blast. The5K course would be tough enough without obsta-cles, with huge elevation changes on the ski hill andflatter reprieves on the adjacent golf course, whichwill be closed for the day. Then there are what theyare billing as the pond dash, duck rope, under-bridge obstacle, tube bridge, climbing wall andsnow-gun slalom. You Tough Mudders out there willbe happy to know no electrical shocks are planneden route.

Organizers have planned nine separate startingwaves half an hour apart. They have optimisticallyset a limit of 125 for each. Entry fees are downrightcheap compared to other obstacle-type events: $100for a special VIP wave, $55 for the wave for themost-competitive runners and $45 for all otherwaves.

Proceeds will benefit local handicap rampbuilding projects, scholarships, the Gleaner’s FoodPantry, Thanksgiving dinners and Rotary Interna-tional efforts to eradicate polio and provide cleandrinking water in third-world countries.

There’s another small-world angle to all this.Perlberg bought the book at a Forward’s Shell sta-tion in West Branch. “That’s a chain of Shell gas sta-tions (from Gaylord to Bay City) owned by a guywho lived three doors down from me where I grewup. He was a golfing partner with my dad,” wroteRich.

So how did my book end up by a cash registerat a Shell station? After it came out in 2006, I got acall from a retired marketing guy near Mio whowanted to know why none of the small bookstoresup north had my book. The case had been a hugedeal for many years there and people shouldn’t haveto have to drive to a Barnes & Noble in Bay City tobuy it, he complained. (Retired, he apparently wasn’tan Amazon kind of guy.)

I agreed and told him I had nothing to do withdistribution. He took it upon himself to call St.Martin’s and demand to become a distributor. Theymade him pay up front for 12 dozen books. Whilethey were being delivered, he made up some smallwire racks to hold a few copies, printed out a labelthat said it was the missing deer hunters’ case andpitched shop owners all over northern Michigan.

They wouldn’t have to pay anything up front. He was paying $4 wholesale for the books, whichsold retail for $7.99. They could keep $2 of eachbook they sold. He sold the first 12 dozen, then 12dozen more, then St. Martin’s started shipping himpallets of books. Within a year they were in nearlyevery gas station, hardware and beauty salon upnorth and he’d sold 20,000 copies, thousands ofthem at the Forward Shells.

He made $40K. The storeowners divvied up$40K. My take? $10K minus my agent’s 15 percent. But it was $10K I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Here’s to smart marketing guys, stupid killersand cool runs.
