Medaille College Mission StatementMedaille College concentrates on excellence in teaching, with an emphasis on personal attention to itsdiverse student body. Its curriculum provides a solid liberal arts and sciences foundation with early accessto career-oriented education. The faculty and all of those involved in the mission of education challengestudents and themselves to the highest possible standards of achievement, but that challenge is balancedby support for every individual student and a concern that each one succeeds.
Historical OverviewWith locations in Buffalo, Amherst, and Rochester, New York, Medaille College is a private, four-yearcollege committed to serving the higher education needs of Western and Central New York, and SouthernOntario. Known for its flexible delivery systems, the College offers master’s, bachelor’s, and associatedegrees through day, evening, weekend, and online programs, and has introduced its first doctoraldegree in clinical psychology.
As of October 2009, Medaille College has partnered with Dalian Maritime University in a cross-borderinitiative providing international students the opportunity to study in the United States.
Medaille College traces its roots to 1875, when it was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph as an institute toprepare teachers. In 1937, the Sisters received an absolute charter from New York State and their institutionwas named Mount St. Joseph Teachers’ College, chartered to grant baccalaureate degrees in education.
In 1968, the Sisters of St. Joseph, led by Alice Huber, SSJ, Ph.D., initiated a change in the charter, which wouldcreate a new, co-educational college. New York State granted this charter andMedaille College was born.
In the 1970s, Medaille experienced rapid expansion. Student enrollment grew, and new facilities, likethe Downey Science Building, were built to meet the demands of new degrees and program options.
In 1991, the College implemented a resident student program, attracting students from throughout NewYork State and Southern Ontario. Three years later, the Kevin I. Sullivan Campus Center opened, offeringstudents a setting for athletic, dining, recreational, and co-curricular activities. The Sullivan CampusCenter, with its Trbovich Alumni Tower, serves as home to the College’s National Collegiate AthleticAssociation Division III sports program, which has seen tremendous success in its short history.
In fall 2001, Medaille opened its first residence hall, followed two years later by a second residence hall, bringing the total number of resident students to nearly 350 and creating an even greater need for campusfacilities for recreation and for learning. Medaille met that need by expanding the Sullivan Campus Center, renovating the Huber Hall Library, and installing new parking areas and a quadrangle green space.
Expansion has also continued at Medaille’s branch campuses, which deliver adult and graduate programs. With a need for more space and upgraded facilities, the Amherst Campus moved to its new locationat 30 Wilson Road, Williamsville, N.Y., in May 2007. In June 2009, the Rochester Campus relocatedto 1880 South Winton Road in Rochester, N.Y., with classrooms, study space, and an expanded libraryin a dedicated facility.
In June 2007, Medaille welcomed its sixth president, Richard T. Jurasek, Ph.D. Under his leadership, theCollege has committed to develop partnerships with local organizations, to contribute to the educational, civic and economic development of the region, and to focus on strategic planning and assessment. Inaddition, the College completed a construction project that doubled the size of Huber Hall with a newStudent Success Center. The new building brings academic and student support services under one roof.
Soon after the Student Success Center opened in fall 2011, expansion of the Sullivan Campus Centerbegan in a project that will create a new 3,000-square-foot fitness center, an event center with a 600-personcapacity, new locker rooms, a late-night snack shop, and dedicated student group and meeting spaces.
Medaille’s annual budget is now $59.9 million and the annual economic impact of Medaille on ourcommunity exceeds $147 million. The College has 90 full-time faculty and over 200 part-time faculty. The College’s total enrollment has increased to 2700 students, making Medaille the fifth largest privatecollege in Western New York.

Oh, say can you seeby the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed
at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripesand bright stars
through the perilous fight,O’er the ramparts we watchedwere so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glarethe bombs bursting in air
gave proof through the nightthat our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangledbanner yet wave
O’er the land of the freeand the home of the brave!

COMMENCEMENT 2 012 19
The Academic ProcessionThe academic procession of today’s Commencement exercises is made up of candidates for degrees, members of the faculty, members of the Board of Trustees, and members of the platform party marchingin that order. After the ceremony, the order of the march is reversed.
The order of march is in accordance with academic protocol which was established centuries ago whenacademic ceremonies were predominately directed by the clergy. In keeping with the familiar order of thereligious procession, the younger and newer groups precede the older, and the place of highest honor is atthe end of the procession.
The Tradition of Academic RegaliaThe pageantry, tradition, and ritual of college and university commencement ceremonies in the UnitedStates originated more than 800 years ago in the medieval universities of Europe. The first academicdegree recorded was conferred by the University of Bologna (Italy) in the middle of the twelfth century. The practice of conferring degrees spread from Bologna to other European universities such as theUniversity of Paris, and then to Oxford and Cambridge.
Medieval institutions of higher learning were traditionally administered by monastic orders, and studentsas well as their instructors wore the habits of monks to protect themselves from the cold of drafty roomsand corridors. In 1321, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) required all bachelors, masters, and doctorsof theology to wear monastic gowns–the first such injunction recorded.
Originally, the hood worn by those holding master’s degrees and doctorates was a head covering, the monk’stippet. When caps came into fashion in the fifteenth century the hoods were draped down and back andornamented with silk or velvet linings.
On May 16, 1895, a delegation of representatives from various institutions convened at ColumbiaUniversity to consider the question of academic attire in the United States. The deliberations of theconference resulted in the formulation of a unified system of academic apparel consisting of gowns, hoods, and caps to be worn by the graduates of any institution of higher learning in the United States. Adherenceto this intercollegiate code of academic costume was voluntary; however, virtually all institutions with theexception of Harvard University and six others adopted it.
The Intercollegiate Code specified that all graduates would wear black gowns, the pattern of whichwould vary according to the degree. Colored accessories were permitted to represent a particular degreeor institution. Undergraduates were required to wear a severe, unornamented black robe with long pointedsleeves, an Oxford mortarboard cap, and a black tassel.
The greatest degree of symbolism was represented by the hood which signified not only the degree of thegraduate but also the institution from which it was conferred. The hoods were bordered in the appropriatefaculty colors to designate the specified academic discipline of the graduate and linked with the officialcolors of the institution.
In keeping with long established traditions, graduates of Medaille College continue to wear black robes withan Oxford mortarboard cap and black tassel.
The Mace BearerThe Mace Bearer carries a mace in the procession immediately preceding the President both entering andleaving the ceremony. The office of the Mace Bearer is purely ceremonial, and derives from the medievaltimes in England when an official such as the Lord of the Admiralty or the Chief Justice of the Court ofAssizes, was taking office or opening his court and needed a bodyguard. Then the mace, a formidableweapon, was held ready to protect the person of the dignitary. From the sixteenth century in England andsince colonial days in America, it has become a symbol of office only, and is carried by a distinguishedmember of the faculty.
