CourseDescriptionThiscourseisthesecondofatwo‐coursesequence.Itmixesthebasicprinciplesofgeometrywithconceptconnectiontootherdisciplines.TheaxiomaticsystemsofEuclidean,Hyperbolic,andEllipticalGeometrywillbestudiedaswellasthemodelsofthesegeometries.Connectionstotrigonometryandtransformationalgeometrywillbestudiedandappliedtorealworldproblems.Theunderlingthemewillbetomodelbothprocessesandcontentofmathematicstudiesofgeometryastheydirectlyapplytothesecondarymathematicsclassroom.PrerequisitesTheprerequisiteisMATH355.CourseRationaleGeometryisabasicpartofthehighschoolcurriculumandtheNCTMrecommendedthat“Prospectiveteachersneedmathematicscoursesdevelopadeepunderstandingofthemathematicstheywillteach”.Thiscoursewillbeginwithhighschoolgeometryandmakedeepconnectiontoallareasofmathematics.Thiscoursewillalsodevelopadeepunderstandingofwhenandhowtouseprooftocommunicateunderstandingofmathematicalconcepts.RequiredCourseMaterials• BlackboardaccountwithenrollmentinMATH455• CompassandstraightedgeandGSPorGeogebra• Textbook:FoundationsofGeometrybyGerardVenemaLearnerOutcomesandAssessment:Bytheendofthecourse,studentswill:Outcomes Assessmentbeabletodefinegeometricconceptscriticaltotheintuitiveandlogicaldevelopmentofgeometry.
