Pathways
In the United Kingdom, the governing body who accredit and recognize health and fitness qual-
ifications is REPS. As a result, specialist training organizations offer accredited qualifications in
the Health and Fitness industry, thus providing opportunities for careers and future develop-
ment of specialist skills for individuals and companies. The structure of qualifications currently
involve entry courses at level 2 status, with either Gym Instructor or Exercise to Music
Instructor the starting point for a career in fitness. Therefore, once a person is certified in one
of the above, they are now eligible to work in a position within the fitness industry. For future
development there are numerous professional courses available at level 2 status, with some
employees having courses funded directly by their employer. To progress further and work on
a self employed basis, the industry awards at Level 3 status are a natural progression to work
independently as a Personal Trainer.

which is a part of the UK's umbrella governing body, the British
Canoe Union. Over the past few years, the BCU have been bringing
in a new coaching system which they hope to improve the experi-
ence of paddlers coming in to the sport by increasing the standard
of coaching across the sport. This new scheme is endorsed by the
UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) which will allow coaches to apply
their coaching knowledge to other sports more easily. The new
UKCC endorsed BCU coaching scheme is ideal if you are new to
coaching. BCU UKCC Level 1 takes you through the fundamentals of
good coaching practice and helps you to understand the basic
technical and tactical aspects of your sport over a four-day
combined training and assessment course which leaves you quali-
fied to works as an assistant coach.
