Internationally renowned dance company Phoenix Dance Theatre open their new tour at Liverpool Playhouse with this world première, featuring four unique pieces of dance.

With a live microphone at its heart, Aletta Collins’ Maybe Yes Maybe, Maybe No Maybe blends movement and voices to create a fresh, witty piece.

In Isira Makuloluwe’s Locked in Vertical, dancers coil and turn their way through a breathtakingly fluid new work.

Inspired by the words of Barack Obama, Warren Adams’ The Audacious One is packed with tense, political intrigue.

The bill is completed by a welcome return to the stage for Philip Taylor’s atmospheric Haunted Passages.

Northern Broadsides Presents

THE GAMEBy Harold Brighouse (Author of Hobson’s Choice)Directed by Barrie Rutter

TUE 21 TO SAT 25 SEP

Lancashire. 1913. Match Day!

Blackton Rovers is in need of money. Owner, Austin Whitworth, sells his star centre forward – local football hero Jack Metherell – to a rival club on the eve of a crucial match that could see Rovers relegated to the 2nd Division. Will honest Jack do Austin’s bidding when asked to throw the match? Or will he put his professional honour above loyalty to his old club?

From the halcyon days of professional football where players were working class heroes and people were supposed to ‘know their place’ comes a spirited comedy that combines broad northern humour with the passion, pride, prejudice and principles of two football families.

Northern Broadsides make a welcome return to Liverpool for the third time this year following Medea and The Canterbury Tales.

After the death of her mother, Annabella is left to face adolescence alone.

When her elder brother Giovanni returns home, he propels them both into a dangerous world of sexual transgression and youthful revolt. Together they crash through the boundaries of what can be said, what can be read, what to believe and who you can love.

First unleashed in 1633 ‘Tis Pity She’s A Whore is one of the most shocking and powerful theatre stories of all time.

“Eternity was in our lips and eyes”

Two civilizations are torn apart by the force of history’s most enduring love story.

Renowned actress and director Janet Suzman directs a remarkable cast in Shakespeare’s epic tragedy of passion and power. Kim Cattrall returns to her birthplace to play Cleopatra, one of the greatest roles in the Shakespearean canon, opposite Jeffery Kissoon as the once great warrior, Antony.

As East meets West, honour and desire collide in a sweeping tale of war, intrigue and passion. The story of a love that destroys an empire, Antony and Cleopatra is served by an extraordinary company that will bring Shakespeare’s kaleidoscopic vision and breath- taking poetry to stunning realisation.

This warts-and-all portrait of the Blockheads’ lead singer explores the highs and lows of Ian Dury’s extraordinary career and inspirational life story. Featuring many of his best songs performed live, including Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Reasons To Be Cheerful.

Publicly, Ian Dury was a cheeky chappie and purveyor of saucy lyrics. Privately, he was a flawed maestro wrestling with demons and disability. This brilliant drama sees him reunited with his tour manager and friend Fred ‘Spider’ Rowe, blending amazing music with powerful scenes exploring Dury’s incredible triumph over adversity.

“Sheffield’s finest synthesizer player and twaddle talker” (Daily Telegraph) decides it’s time to instruct the Nation in moral matters.

Britain is in serious moral decline: dwindling church attendances, binge drinking in City centres, the MPs’ expenses scandal and fat cat bonuses, the continued destruction of the environment despite global warming, and most recently, the theft of a box of slug pellets and weed killer from John’s shed.

The moral rectitude of next door neighbour and sole agent, Ken Worthington, is also in question: his sloppily typed email to the printers has caused an error in the title of this show turning ‘morals’ into ‘more rolls’.

GIMP

THU 18 NOV

An International dance phenomenon with sell out performances across the USA and festivals worldwide; Gimp examines the uncompromising ways we are often identified or defined by our physicality. It is about beauty, not the photo-shopped, airbrushed kind, but a harsher more unexpected one.

Gimp is a collision of two worlds that are not supposed to co-exist and turns on its head accepted notions of dance, performance and body image.

Choreographer Heidi Latsky creates her most emotionally impactful and critically acclaimed dance evening of her career.

“GIMP beautifully resets preconceptions about bodies and movement.” The New Yorker

In the Kingdom of Aigburth, in the days of olde,An epic tale was about to unfold.

When to the King and Queen a babe t’was born,They threw a great party on the palace lawn!

They invited the world but forgot just one,And that’s when their nightmare had truly begun.

The forgotten fairy was dementedly miffed,And roared his wrath as he delivered his gift!

“On her eighteenth birthday she’d prick her finger!Fade away and no longer linger!”

It’s shocking! It’s rocking! It’s incredibly cool! But for this baby shower bring a cagoule!

THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PANTO

FRI 26 NOV TO SAT 22 JAN 2011

Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Present The Rock ‘N’ Roll Panto Sleeping Beauty By Sarah Nixon and Mark Chatterton Directed by Mark Chatterton

What would you do for the perfect Christmas?

Reality and the ridiculous collide in an enchanting festive adventure, whisking you between Marrakech and Liverpool, Victorian England and the present day.

From Peepolykus, the company that brought Spyski and the West End hit The Hound of the Baskervilles to Liverpool, and under the direction of Artistic Director Gemma Bodinetz (Tartuffe and The Hypochondriac), this is the extraordinary tale of a reckless man who risks everything one Christmas Eve.

Jack Wilkins is forced into a desperate attempt to retrieve his life after accepting an irresistible offer from a sparkly eyed stranger. But time is running out and if he can’t honour the deal he has struck and get to the hospital by

the allotted hour, he will lose everything. Forever.

With a toothy reindeer, a distracted fairy godmother, a warehouse full of pants and a seasonal nod to some of our best- loved Christmas stories No Wise Men is an hilarious, magical and absurd Christmas cracker of a show.

WARNING: This show contains some scenes of a traditional nature.

“The most glorious entertainment for ages.” Time Out on Spyski

THU 2 DEC TO SAT 15 JAN 2011

Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and Peepolykus Present the World Première of No Wise Men By Steven Canny and John NicholsonDirected by Gemma Bodinetz Designed by Jon Bausor

24

The Everyman Theatre on Hope Street opened in 1964 and has been home to some of the most inspiring, urgent, enjoyable and socially aware theatre of the last five decades. The building itself has changed many times; from chapel to cinema, boxing arena to theatre space. It once had a circle, a space for youth theatre and for building sets; now it is just what you see and it’s in a bad state of repair (despite our best efforts). Now we are poised to build a new Everyman – a vibrant creative hub fit for this uniquely cultural city in the 21st century.

The Essential IngredientsWe have been listening to our audiences, our staff, and the actors, writers, directors and designers of the past, present and future to find out what makes the Everyman so special. Developed and designed by prominent theatre architects Haworth Tompkins, the building will provide new incarnations of the Everyman’s dynamic and inclusive 400-seat ‘thrust’ stage auditorium, legendary basement Bistro and iconic Everyman sign.

More SpaceWe have bought back the theatre and acquired the site next door, giving us space to accommodate vital facilities the Everyman currently lacks, many of which will also serve the Playhouse. These will include a Youth and Community space for the theatres’ vast and growing work with our Youth Theatre, education and community groups; rehearsal space, workshops and offices for production staff; and a ‘hub’ for writers to develop their work.

0151 709 4776WWW.EVERYMAN PLAYHOUSE.COM

Welcoming and AccessibleThe new Everyman will have a more open and welcoming street presence, a new pavement café, a first floor theatre bar with balcony over Hope Street, and of course the well-loved Everyman Bistro. There will be excellent access throughout the whole building for disabled people, and we hope that everyone whatever their need or background will feel welcome.

Greener and SustainableThe new theatre incorporates a number of low energy strategies, including plenty of natural light and a natural ventilation system.

26

How Will it Look? The building will be constructed of red brick with a new glass frontage. At first floor level there will be a full-length balcony and a new 21st century version of the current iconic sign. Above this will be a beautiful façade comprising 105 life-sized, abstracted portraits of Liverpool people transferred onto cut aluminum shutters, a physical representation of the community to which the Everyman has always belonged.

What Happens Next? Our Planning Application has been submitted to Liverpool City Council for consideration over the coming months. Meanwhile we’d like to know what you think. Join one of our backstage tours and presentations, or call by for a cup of tea and a chat at one of our drop-in sessions during July and August, further details are available on our website.

To keep up to date with the journey towards a new Everyman, please email [email protected] and keep checking our website for more news www.everymanplayhouse.com

Theatre For Everyone Accessible Performances

Audio description is a live verbal commentary giving information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. It’s great for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to see the details of a performance, you don’t have to be blind to make use of audio description. A description of the setting, costumes and a full touch tour of the set are also available before the performance starts.

Captioning is similar to television subtitling and converts the spoken word into text, which is displayed on a caption unit situated on or next to the stage. The captions also include the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects. Captioning is a great way for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to hear the actors speaking to still enjoy coming to the theatre.

Here at the Everyman and Playhouse theatres, we believe everyone, no matter what their age or experience, should have the opportunity to enjoy great theatre.

Don’t Forget, Still to Come this Summer…SummerscapeAugustAs well as our tours and drop in sessions at the Everyman every Friday (see page 28) there will be backstage tours at the Playhouse (subject to our programme of essential repairs); plus face-painting and storytelling in Sleeping Beauty’s bedroom. Check with Box Office or visit our website for details.

AfroReggae in Residence26 July to 21 AugustFresh from the favelas of Brazil, we are hosting ten AfroReggae artists for a month-long residency this summer. Working in some of the most violent neighbourhoods in the world, their work has changed lives, provided employment and built strong partnerships with police. Now they share their experiences, music and street arts skills with 15-19 year-olds from across our City. You are welcome to join in a range of community sharing events as well as two public performances:

Saturday 7 August in Williamson Square. Saturday 21 August at the Out of the Blue Music Festival in Everton Park.

For a full programme contact [email protected] and find out more on our website.

The visit from AfroReggae is presented in partnership with Liverpool NHS Primary Care Trust and Liverpool City Council and is part of 2010 Year of Health and Wellbeing. For more information visit www.2010healthand wellbeing.org.uk.
