Lewisham saxophonist wins Mayor of London’s GIGs competition Congratulations to Sam Barnett (12) who won the Grand Final of the highly competitive Mayor of London’s GIGS Big Busk in the Youth Category. He was awarded a complete set of busking equipment after winning one of the competition’s three categories. The Mayor of London GIGS Big Busk attracted a record 800 musicians from across the capital. Sam says it was an wonderful experience. “I’m still playing with the band ‘Tomorrows Warriors’ every other Sunday which is enormous fun and I’ve got gigs ahead. I’m going to take some time out to celebrate and enjoy my new busking equipment!”

Animate Orchestra LEWISHAM AUTUMN COURSE 2013 Thursday 31 October and Friday 1 November, 9.45am – 4pm. Sandhurst Junior School, Minard Road, SE6 1NW. Instrumentalists in Years 5 to 10 are invited to take part in a 2 day skills building course during which they will create their own new music inspired by Folk Songs by Italian composer Luciano Berio. Serious New Audiences Serious New Audiences offers people who would not normally have the opportunity to experience live music due to geographical, financial or cultural barriers, access to Serious produced shows in major arts venues. The programme has a particular but not exclusive focus on young people under 25 years of age. Ticket offers include a chance to see international jazz artists, including Courtney Pine, at the Barbican and Royal Festival Halls. Contact [email protected]

The Albany, Deptford: Uncover Music Company Music Production Half Term FREE Workshop Monday 28 October ‐ Friday 1 November, 11am‐4pm Interested in music production or running a record label? Illum Sphere (Hoya:Hoya/Ninja Tune) will be running a week long music production workshop at the Albany. Learn how to start your own label and release the music you produce. There are links with Ninja Tune and BBC 1Xtra throughout the week long course, talks and tutorials, and mentoring with industry experts on setting up, and producing a record on your own label. Lewisham People’s Day Over 180 young musicians from 30 groups performed on the new Music Hub stage at Lewisham People’s Day in Mountsfield Park in July – including choirs, solo singers, jazz, rock, wind bands, and percussion groups from schools, music centres and partner organisations across the borough. It was a fabulous celebration of the skills and creativity of students, music teachers and music leaders in Lewisham. Congratulations to everyone who took part.

Sedgehill School student successes Pupils Aaron Gauntlett and Trey Qua have a great deal to celebrate, Aaron has received an Award for Young Musicians grant to support his tuba studies and he has recently been playing with the Crystal Palace Brass Band. Aaron is a member of Lewisham Music Service’s Brass and Concert Bands. Trey has been awarded a place on the Music for Youth (MfY) Young Artist Development Programme. His year long programme started in July at the MfY National Festival Birmingham where he took part in music composition and song arranging workshops and met with professional musicians and industry experts. At the end of the programme, Trey’s music will be performed at one of MFY's prestigious public performance events.

News from Hub partners continued…….Lewisham Music Service There are places available in many after school and Saturday groups and choirs, especially Lewisham Schools Concert Band (Grade 5+ players – all wind and brass instruments welcome) and Lewisham Schools Sinfonia (vacancies for Grade 4+ strings, wind and brass), and Saturday Choirs, Creative Music and Percussion Groups. These ensembles meet at Prendergast Vale College SE13 7BN on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Brass, Woodwind and Percussion players from Years 5 to 9 are also welcome to join the new East:West Band, run in partnership with theinternationally acclaimed Bollywood Brass Band. The East:West Band rehearses at Trinity Lewisham School on Fridays between 4:30 and 6pm.There will be regular end of term concerts, including a very special Gala performance in summer 2014 with pupils from Greenwich Music Hub). Midi Music Company Renowned Brazilian maestro Letieres Leite will be bringing his newest project, the Letieres Leite Quinteto to London this October for a selection of special gigs, workshops and collaborations. Leteieres and his band will be delivering their captivating mixture of jazz styles and traditional Afro‐Brazilian drumming to the Albany for what promises to be two fantastic nights rich with South American melodies and percussive rhythms.
