Lest We Forget Exhibition, A Holocaust Memorial Exhibition in Civic Center Plaza
This is a temporary display of 68 portraits of Holocaust survivors by artist Luigi Toscano which will be displayed in Civic Center Plaza in April/May 2019. This exhibition is fully sponsored with private funds from the German Consulate and the Goethe Institute. The project was introduced to City staff by the Mayor’s Office of Protocol. Local Holocaust survivors will also be included in the exhibition.
The photographs will be printed on a semitransparent weatherproof material and will be installed around the perimeter of the DG in the center of the plaza. Each photograph measures 59” wide by 88” high. One image will face the interior of the plaza and one image will face the walkway. The Goethe Institute has engaged a structural engineer to ensure that the photo frames will withstand both wind and seismic forces. The project artist will be in residence in San Francisco for the entire duration of the exhibition to repair, maintain and/or replace the work if necessary. The Goethe Institute is handling the project management and will work to develop public programs that will occur during the exhibition.
The work has previously been displayed at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC and UN Headquarters in New York City. Displays are planned for major cities throughout the US.
