The Leadership Institute of Texas State University-San Marcos

MissionThe purpose of the Leadership Institute is to bring students together to learn leadership skills, engage in activities that foster ethical behavior, build an inclusive community, demonstrate social responsibility and inspire a commitment to excellence. The Leadership Institute will

SarahWeddingtonhaslivedalifeofleadershipandnowsharesherexpertiseandinsightswithothers.Anationallyknown attorney and spokesperson on leadership and public issues, her experience and charisma make her a highly sought-afterspeakeronthedevelopmentofleadershipskills.Sheisparticularlywellknownforherworkonissuesaffect-ingwomeninhermanyrolesasattorney,legislator,Presidentialadvisor,professor,andexpertcalleduponbythenationalmedia.

Sheisaprovenleaderingovernmentatthenationalandstatelevels.From1978to1981,sheservedasAssistanttoPresi-dentJimmyCarter,directingtheAdministration’sworkonwomen’sissuesandleadershipoutreach.AsGeneralCounseloftheU.S.DepartmentofAgriculturein1977andthefirstwomantoeverholdthatposition,shesupervisedmorethan200

lawyers.From1983-1985,Dr.WeddingtonwasthefirstwomanDirectoroftheTexasOfficeofState-FederalRelations.Electedin1973andservingthreeterms,shewasthefirstwomanfromAustininthe150-memberTexasHouseofRepresentatives.

Inherfirstbook,AQuestionofChoice,Dr.WeddingtondetailedthelandmarkRoev.Wadecase,whichshesuccessfullyarguedbeforetheU.S.Su-premeCourtinl973.SheisbelievedtobetheyoungestpersonevertowinacasebeforetheU.S.SupremeCourt.AfoundingmemberoftheFoun-dationforWomen’sResources,shehasbeenintegralinallitsactivities,includingtheLeadershipTexasandLeadershipAmericaprogramsandthecreationofTheWomen’sMuseum,whichopenedSeptember29,2000,inDallas,Texas.

Dr.Weddingtonhasreceivednumerousleadershiphonorsandawards,includingtheMargaretBrentWomenLawyersofAchievementAwardfromtheAmericanBarAssociation’sCommissiononWomen,the“KnowledgeisPower”AwardfromTexasWomenLawyers,theAusleyLeadershipAwardfromPlannedParenthoodoftheTexasCapitalRegion,theSpeakingOutforJusticeAwardbytheAmericanAssociationofUniversityWomen.

ShehasbeenfeaturedinWorkingWomen,People,andtheWashingtonPost,andhasbeenaguestonTheTodayShow,GoodMorningAmerica,CBSMorningNews,andCNN.

ShereceivedherJ.D.degreefromTheUniversityofTexasSchoolofLawin1967andisaDistinguishedAlumnaofMcMurryUniversity.SheisanAdjunctProfessoratTheUniversityofTexasinAustin,wheresheisshapinganewgenerationofleadersinherclasses“Gender-BasedDiscrimination”and“LeadershipinAmerica.”Shealsowritesandtravelsextensively,speakingonthedevelopmentofleadershipskills,andiscurrentlyworkingonhernextbookonthetopicofleadershipandself-renewal.

SATURDAY,9:30-10:15AM,LBJSTUDENTCENTERBALLROOM,3-16.1 Asaninternationallyrecognizedpoet,authorandspeaker,Mr.TimSwainhasbeencaptivatingaudiencesforyearsasanaward-winningperformerandcatalystforsocialchange.AsanativeofHouston,Texas,hebeganwritingattheageoffiveandafterrealizinghisgift,begancompetinginschooltalentshowsandoratoricalcompetitions.

Swainenteredtheslampoetrysceneinhighschoolandquicklyestablishedhimselfasarespectedslampoetandfiercecompetitor.HehascompetedinslampoetrycompetitionsacrosstheUnitedStatesandhasbeenthekeynotespeakeratdozensofeducationalconferences,churchseminarsandhasheadlinedvenuesinMexicoandAfricafocusingonempow-ermentthroughliteracyandeducation.HisworkalsoservedastheinspirationforWhyIWrite,anationalanti-bullyingcampaigninLondon,EnglandbroadcastonBBC.Hehasspokentoaudiencesupto5000andhiswordshaveimpacted

peopleinoverthreedozencountries.

Currently,heholdsaM.Ed.inEducationfromTexasStateUniversity-SanMarcosandiscoordinatingcurriculumforCongressKIDZ,ananti-bullyingandcharacterbuildingeducationalinitiativeforunderrepresentedelementaryschoolstudents.Healsoservesasalifecoachandrecentlylaunchedasuccessserieswhichfocusesongoalsettingandpurposedrivenliving.Swainrecentlyfinishedhisdebutbookentitled,“TheBirdoutsideYourWin-dow” an inspirational and contemporary, poetic rendition of the ugly duckling.

Mr.TimSwain’sunderliningmotivationishispersonalrelationshipwithJesusChrist,andonadailybasisheistryingtoliveouthispurposetoitsfullest potential.

SarahWeddingtonhaslivedalifeofleadershipandnowsharesherexpertiseandinsightswithothers.Anationallyknown attorney and spokesperson on leadership and public issues, her experience and charisma make her a highly sought-afterspeakeronthedevelopmentofleadershipskills.Sheisparticularlywellknownforherworkonissuesaffect-ingwomeninhermanyrolesasattorney,legislator,Presidentialadvisor,professor,andexpertcalleduponbythenationalmedia.
