PRESENT SCENARIOIndian Food Processing Industry is on the verge of a great transformation from a low level of processing and a low level of share in the global trade to one that is likely to define the global trade in a few decades. The country has a vast and diverse supply base and also the demand to absorb the supply. It has been observed that employment potential of the food processing sector is much higher than the other sectors. The availability of affordable labour puts india in an enviable position to produce a wide variety of food and commercial crops for domestic consumption as well as exports.

KARNATAKA’S STRENGTHSThe State of Karnataka is blessed with rich bio-diversity, ten agro climatic zones and nine distinct soil types,• is the only State where most varieties of fruits are available• is the leader in floriculture• contributes 70% of the India’s Coffee• is the largest producer of spices, aromatic and medicinal crops• is the second largest milk producing state in the country.Due to factors like access to fruits and vegetables, industry friendly policies and the manpower availability, the state is emerging as a Food and Beverage destination.To effectively utilize the existing resources, minimize the post harvest losses and further value addition, Food Parks are established across the State. Government of Karnataka has established Food Karnataka Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle, as the Nodal Agency for development of infrastructure to establish Food Processing Industries in the State.

FKL’s OBJECTIVES• Establishment of food-agro technology park in potential

locations • Formulating exclusive policies for agro food processing

industries• Setting up of agro export zones with private sector

investment to position Karnataka as the ideal location for investors in India’s Food Processing Industry.

INFRASTRUCTUREFood Karnataka Limited is establishing food parks in potential locations of the state.Basic infrastructure like: • Roads & Drains • Power and• Water Common Facilities like: • Warehouse • Effluent Treatment Plant• Cold Storage • Sorting, Grading & Packaging • Quality Control Lab and • Technology Business Incubation Centre, etc, are provided on pay & use basis Other general facilities:• Seminar & Conference Hall• Market information Centre• Communication Centre• Library• Cafeteria & Guest HouseA minimum of 20 plots for establishing Food Processing Industries is provided in each Food Park. Under the 10th Five year plan scheme, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India has approved establishment of Food Parks at:• Malur in Kolar District• Navnagar in Bagalkot District• Hiriyur in Chitradurga District• Jewargi in Gulbarga districtThese food parks are in the advanced stage of implementation.The State Government has approved for establishing food parks at six locations ie., at• Bangalore (Rural)• Tumkur • Davanagere• Shimoga• Belgaum• BijapurFurther, the State Government has approved for establishing Spice Park at Byadagi in Haveri district.

The State Government proposes to set up food parks at Yadgir, Koppal, Dharwad, Hassan, Mysore & Chikkamagalur.
