Persistent rain could not dampen the spirits of the nearly 100 residents and visitors who enjoyed the Whakapirau Family Fun Day. The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group along with the Whakapirau Ratepayers and Residents Association enjoyed a day of family fun which concluded with a raft race in the harbour. The IKHM group hosted an information site on sustaining a healthy Kaipara Harbour.

Lakes debate takes to the streetA clear message was sent to the Kaipara District Council as 62 boats were paraded down Victoria Street in Dargaville in a peaceful protest against proposed changes in the Draft Kai Iwi Lakes — Taharoa Domain — Reserve Management Plan 2015 which suggests power boats could be banned by 2018.

The protest, organised by the Friends of Kai Iwi Lakes working group, aimed to raise awareness amongst the community about the proposed changes in the draft.

“We were absolutely rapt with the turnout. Now we are hard at work

drafting up alternative ideas to present as part of submissions to the Kaipara District Council,” says working group spokesperson Rob Stevenson.

“The main thing is to get as many submissions as we can. The democratic process that we have is

about encouraging everyone to put in their submissions and get involved.” Mr Stevenson believes the KDC have not considered the economic impact on the district in the plan.

The Hyndman and Sheppard families cruised along the Northern Wairoa River from the Pahi Boating and Fishing Club in their launches to join in the annual Northern Wairoa Boating Club regatta in Dargaville over Waitangi weekend. They took home the Sealed Handicap, the Paton Trophy and the Farewell Handicap making the trip well worth it. “Approximately 20 boats participated in the Launch and Runabout events. We had a really great time and those who attended had lots of fun,” said NW Boating Club commodore Rodney Wilson. “We are now looking forward to our annual Seagull race coming up on February 27.”

The new entrants in the reception class at Dargaville Primary School enjoyed getting to know each other and making new friends in their first week of school where they get to transition into school life with their teacher Miss Bennett. They have approximately 10 weeks of orientation and learning in early literacy and self management which allows the children to get happy and comfortable with the school environment before moving to the next classroom.

Dargaville High School students poised in the midst of a relay fun race during their annual swimming sports. Students were invited to take part in competitive and non competitive races to earn points for their houses. Eleven records were broken this year. “DHS would like to make special mention to Carline Gillespie, Christine Taylor, Mark Willy, Barbara Hines and Marty Brown for attending on the day to help us run the competitive pool,” says sports coordinator Samantha Taylor. Top swimmers will go onto compete in the South Zone swimming day and from there the top swimmers are chosen to compete in the Northland Secondary Schools Swimming competition.

“Local businesses are telling us they will be negatively affected and may not survive if some of these changes are implemented.”

Ken Inder of Inder’s Auto One, Fishing and Gas says the suggested changes would definately have a negative effect on his business.

“I’ve had comments from my customers saying they won’t be back to the lakes if they can’t bring their boats.”

Taharoa Domain Governance Committee chair Peter Winder says: “At this stage we have not done a full economic impact assessment and it would be difficult to do one.

“We are looking forward to the submissions, in particular from the business community, as to what impact they think would happen on their businesses.

“We are acutely aware of the current business generated by people bringing boats into the area and part of the plan anticipates a change in the use of the lakes into a variety of other activities. They will generate a different form of economic activity.

“In particular if we are able to boost visitation in the shoulder of the summer season then the impact could well be very positive.

“There is also an element of the reserve management plan that talks about covering a broader range of events which would also bring a significant economic benefit.”

The plan also proposes the closure of the Promenade Point Campground, and extensive development and extending Pine Beach campground as well as stopping the release of trout fingerlings into Lake Taharoa and Lake Waikare.

Sheep dog trial champion by Ann Morgan

With a score of 98.5 out of a possible 100, Duncan Gilligan and his dog Dodge have returned home to Kaiwaka from the Tux Handy Dog Championships as the winner.

Duncan is a member of the Molesworth Sheep Dog Club in Kaiwaka.

“Following in my father’s footsteps, I have been involved with sheepdogs since I was young,” said Duncan.

Starting by winning the preliminary round in Kaiwaka, Duncan and Dodge qualified to go to Taumarunui for the North Island final and by coming second they went to Gore for the New Zealand finals.

“We took that out. It was one of those runs that went our way,” said Duncan.

“The sportsmanship out there is great and the Handy Dog competition is a unique event — everything you need for the contest is at hand.

“My hosts in Gore opened their farm up for us, gave us sheep and a track for our dogs to run on. Meeting people like that is fantastic.”

Duncan says training a dog can take six to eight months a few minutes a night. It is just repetition, and reading your dog.

“When the dog gets bored you stop. Ninety percent is breeding and I have received a lot of advice from veterans Tony Hargreaves and Murray Child.”

Molesworth club secretary Rob Hastie said this is the first time anyone has won this Tux event from Northland.

“Duncan deserves this win. He is one of the unsung heroes of sheep dog trialling in the North. He always puts his hand up to help if anyone needs it. He is a fine example to others.”

Arts and musicshowcase local talent by Ayla Miller

The popular TokaFest grass roots music and art festival is set to entertain for the fourth year on February 20 at the Toka Toka Tavern.

Event organiser and local musician Olly Knox says the festival brings together local artists and music lovers whilst reaching out to the wider Northland area.

He says people travel from Whangarei, the Bay of Islands and South Kaipara to take part in the festivities which include a fire show by Circus Kumarani, art, craft stalls, as well as local and international artists.

“This year there will be a different range of artists involved as well as some familiar faces,” he says.

“The event gives local musicians the chance to play in front of a bigger crowd when there aren’t many opportunities at the moment to get out and do that. It brings together quite a few different parts of the community and it is great business for the historic Toka Toka Tavern.”

The lineup this year includes Canadian folk singer/songwriter Marina Marina who will be sharing the stage with a host of Northland musicians

“I enjoy seeing the bands having a good time and being able to watch original music and helping artists have the opportunity to perform and share their passion,” says Olly.

The Maungaturoto community are being asked to get in behind the Maungaturoto Junior Rugby Club and support their local team at a Community Open Day to be held on Saturday, February 20 at the Country Club.

Maungaturoto Junior Rugby Club president Kyle Harris says he would like to see rugby become a part of the wider community.

“We are a small struggling club and we are looking for support. This day is our way of giving back to the community.”

There will be a bouncy castle, paintball, raffles, spot prizes and pony rides. The local police will be there with their dogs along with the fire brigade.

Mr Harris moved to Maungaturoto from Maungakaramea with his partner and children and says he has seen

other towns where the rugby team was the community.

“It worked really well for other towns. If we can get back into the community and be more visible maybe our club will get more interest.

“I have six kids between the ages of 3 and 12 and all of them except two will be playing rugby this year. We are just trying to get kids on the rugby field really. “

He says there is not a lot for teenagers to do and the club are trying to keep them occupied and he hopes the community day will assist with this.

Plans to revive domain by Ayla Miller

A committee set up to revitalise the Te Kopuru Domain have big plans for the area which is home to the town’s only public toilets.

The domain’s toilets were temporarily shut down in December 2014 when their power source in the Te Kopuru Bowling Club building also closed.

They are currently open again but the Kaipara District Council have given the committee until March this year to get more of an interest in the grounds.

“We are trying to put a plan into place about what we can use it for,” says committee member Missy Hokai.

The committee are currently in the planning stages of organising a playground, a BMX track and a family rest area with picnic tables. These developments will be community funded and the group hopes tosee more sports played on the grounds as well.

“At this stage we are waiting for the buildings to be moved and then we will plan a BMX track and a picnic area.

Missy, who was born and bred in Te Kopuru, says the committee want to get the community back to being close knit.

Residents began by holding a Christmas parade in December at the domain which she says was very well attended.

“We had a sausage sizzle, drinks, ice blocks and gifts for all the children. Everything was donated bySilver Fern Farms, the Te Kopuru shop

and members of the community. “I think we just need to promote the domain and let people know that it’s there and can be used for community events.”

Kaipara District Council community facilitator Darlene Lang Gent says she is working with the committee to develop a concept plan.

“We would like to have a community working bee to tidy up the area and then we can work out where to put what and how much it will cost.

“It’s now about getting the community involved and working out what the community can do and what they can provide.

Mrs Lang Gent will be helping the committee apply for grants throughout the process.

A ballerina’s dream by Ann Morgan

Aranga School student Kaya Tobin has loved dancing since she was a little girl and has been attending Kings School of Dance in Aratapu for the past five years.

David and Jenny Collyer are her foster parents and they are encouraging her to follow her dream.

“I like how ballet is graceful,” said 12-year-old Kaya. “You can make a career out of it and teach others.”

The dance school held their annual recital at the end of last year and Kaya danced to the Maori version the song Teddy Bear.

“I used to play the CD when we went driving in our car. Kaya grew to like the song and chose it as her solo dance and she performed it brilliantly,” said Jenny.

“I had seen her do little bits of it whilst she was rehearsing but to see her perform to an audience was incredible. It brought tears to the eyes of those watching.

“Kaya will be an accomplished dancer one day. She works hard and practises every day. This last twelve months we have watched her become very much a dancing ballerina.”

The plan is to keep her as long as they can with Sonja King as her tutor and get her into competitions

“Sonja has the patience of a saint. She works so hard with the children. One day we hope to get her into a ballet academy and are looking at how

we can get her sponsorship to attend.” Kaya says many concert goers asked her why she chose that particular song which is in Maori and is about abuse.

“It is a story that many people can relate to and I knew it would speak to them. I like to encourage others,” she said.

Kaya has now been invited to perform at local schools which she is looking forward to.

“I will have to dance at my own school first though,” said Kaya.

Encouraging healthy habitsA complete departure from the food norm has created a booming business for the Dargaville High School canteen, while providing really healthy food for students.

‘Wok ‘n’ Roll’ takes the old filled roll concept to a whole new level. A range of cooked meats is prepared fresh daily and then students choose from up to twelve different salad accompaniments, building their own ‘customised’ torpedo roll, wrap, standard roll or sandwich, with prices beginning at $3.

The hugely popular concept is the brainchild of long-time Canteen manager Denise Gosnell, who says even though the canteen hasn’t sold junk or fast food for some years, she still wanted to take school lunches to an even healthier level, while increasing choice, taste and appeal.

Denise says everything is cooked fresh each day on the premises and she is delighted with the response. “We are flat out from before the lunch bell with three students and staff running the counters.” Denise says using pretty much all student staff also provides valuable training in cash handling skills and customer service.

“We’d like to run it for morning tea as well, but there is just not enough time to handle the demand in that shorter period. So for now, it’s just lunch, but

we take orders too. Come winter we’ll also add hot ‘loaded’ potatoes and bring back our very popular homemade soup.”

She says she got her idea from seeing students with salad rolls from downtown, delivered by parents, and decided she could do even better.

“When I came here 19 years ago, it was chocolate bars, pastries, sally-lunns and donuts. We’ve come a long way since then and the success of this proves kids actually do like good, healthy food.”

Dargaville High School’s canteen is a school-run venture that also serves the Intermediate school next door and returns all profits to school projects.

Show keeps traditions alive

Zeus the calf with rearer 12-year-old Tayla Hansen and her six-year-old sister Alexis at the 124th Arapohue Show. Show manager Nicky Poyner said the day was a success and saw more entries in the indoor section than ever before. “It is a lot of work for one day but it is great to put it on for the general public. We had the vintage cars back this year and it was the second year we have had the highland dancing after 35 years without,” says Nicky.

Featuring sheep, dogs and logsSheep dog trials and the ever-popular logging sports competitions will be highlights at this years Northland Field Days from March 3 to 5 in Dargaville with exhibitors and the events committee working overtime to search for more new events, according to president Lew Duggan.

“A special effort has been made to cater to families and the committee has collected together a large number of events and attractions for kids of all ages.” he said.

“Events include Clydesdale rides, digital trap shooting, sheep races, a petting zoo and more.”

Logger sports promises to be especially exciting this year according to event organiser Carl Bowman who says the area allocated for the event has grown to accommodate a wider range of activities and a bigger competitor list. Competition will be heating up in

the log loading event with ten operators lining up, double the number attending last year. In the event, competitors take turns to unload and reload a trailer unit of logs with an excavator purpose-built for forestry work. Other events include athletes trying their hand at everything from chainsaw racing to wood chopping.

Sheepdog trial organisers expect around 60 dogs to take part in a line-up featuring some of New Zealand’s brightest and best dog trialists.

Past New Zealand champions Murray Child, Kenny Whittaker, Scott McCray, Ian McKinnon Alan Nisbett and Neville Child

are all likely to take to the starting point as is last year’s New Zealand handy dog champion Duncan Gilligan.

However, New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association president Chris Robertson is pleased to see a growing number of females taking part in the sport.

“I expect Anna Blair and Erin Ball, both exciting competitors in their own right, to take part in the competition.”

From Thursday to Saturday the event programme lists sheep dog trials ‘to find the best in the region’ — with competitions being continued on page 12 …

Clydesdale Rides will enable visitors to make their way around the event ‘in style’, aboard a wagon pulled by three Clydesdale horses.

Organisers have made it even more affordable to attend by dropping adult ticket prices and introducing a new family pass this year.

Those aged over 16 will pay $12 to enter the event, instead of $15 while groups with two adults and up to three children will pay no more than $30 to spend the day at the event. “This makes entry more affordable than most other attractions and events in the country at a time when entry prices are going up rather than down, and was done so organisers could give back to the community,” said Mr. Duggan.

“I know people who have been to every Northland Field Days since its inaugural event in 1984 and they have been baked by sun, soaked by rain and chilled by cyclone-force winds — we need to do something to say thank you.”

“And with exhibitor numbers almost being at capacity there’s going to be plenty of people who need to come more than one day.”

Approximately 90% of the sites had been booked as early as December 2015 according to event organiser Meagan Edmonds, with exhibitors pouring in much faster than previous years and offering a wider range of products and services.

The forthcoming festival of all things farming and agriculture in the Kaipara also comes at a wonderful time to take in a long and lazy evening meal, enjoying the best our region’s chefs have to offer.

Of course there’s also entertainment aplenty for the three-day rural fest — kicking off with karaoke on Friday night, open to all comers, and bumped up a notch for Saturday with the arrival at the Northern Wairoa Hotel of a double-header country showstopper. Eddie Low, the ‘voice in a million’ teams up with Kevin Greaves, straight out of Nashville, to bring a night of soulful acoustic music to the grand old tavern’s ballroom. Following on from the very successful return of Fleetwood Mac to the Northern Wairoa, this double billing will also be a ‘dinner and a show’ package — and a great night out.

Also with a western theme, it’s high time everybody tried the Texan style fare on offer down at the Aratapu Tavern. A recent visit to the friendly little country pub for New Orleans Mardi Gras week found the whole place decorated in gold, green and purple, with authentic ‘down on the bayou’ dishes cooked to perfection. Ask for the Texan style pork ribs if you want a mouthwatering, spicy and succulent treat — and follow it up with a slice of extra-decadent mud cake or fried apple pie and icecream during Field Days.

A firm favourite on Kiwi farms since its introduction, the Polaris Ranger family of all terrain side-by-side vehicles is once again set to have a very strong showing this Northland Field Days.

The Ranger 570 HD hits a sweet spot in the power-to-weight band, with versatile performance driven by a reliable single-cylinder 567cc four stroke. Upgraded for 2016 with even more towing capacity and load-bearing might, the 570 is all about smart delivery of its 40-plus horsepower, via on demand four wheel drive and a safety-ensuring engine braking system to tame even the most unwieldy loads over rough terrain. Smaller and more nimble, but still built with hard work to the fore, the Ranger ETX boasts great fuel economy and a platform of near unrivalled versatility. Herding, fencing, spraying — even hunting and fishing — all are able to be accomplished with aplomb by this 31 horsepower, fuel-injected machine which packs the usual Ranger toughness into a compact little package.

In terms of innovation, Polaris have alternative fuels and powertrains locked down. Farms which run on diesel power can opt for the convenience of adding a Ranger 1000 Diesel to their fleet, drinking from the same tank as those big tractors.

As is the way with many modern road-going vehicles, Polaris have also taken up the challenge of providing a fully electric option in their lineup. The Ranger EV comes equipped with a single 48 volt induction motor, and the same kind of silent, on-demand power which has rocketed brands like Tesla to the front pages of auto mags worldwide.

With plenty of sharp tools like these in the shed, it’s easy to see why Polaris are quietly confident about their Field Days presence in Northland — and why they have become a force to be reckoned with in the agricultural sector.

With farmers seeking economical options and eschewing needless luxury on their working rolling stock, it’s nice to see a new model in the ATV market which does not seem at all like a compromise.

Introduced just a year ago, the Can Am L series of off-road machines represented an entry level into the popular brand. Now, after 12 months of feedback from customers worldwide, Can Am have sharpened up the L series into something even more practical

— offering new engines with more power, more towing capacity, more rack space and the option to jump into a ‘fully loaded’ model right off the showroom floor.

The updated Outlander L series is led up by the 570 for 2016 — a powerful

addition to the range. With a brand new 48 horsepower Rotax v-twin providing the get up and go, the 570 is a step up from the single-piston 430 which is also available to L riders. With eight valves and a classically ‘bulletproof’ single overhead cam system, the new Rotax gains faster acceleration without compromising top end speed. Petrolhead purists will appreciate how this has been achieved — not through computer tinkering, but by beefing up the size of the pistons and lengthening the stroke. It’s old-school engineering, but it works perfectly at the heart of what is assuredly a multi-functional tool on the farm.

Combine that new mill with tried and tested torsional trailing arms at the back and independent A-arms at the front — plus a healthy ride height — and there is not much the L 570 can’t slog through.

And it’ll attack the paddocks towing 590 kgs, with a further 163 onboard. That’s plus a full-sized rider — so it’s a good thing that Can Am have fitted out their new model with their proprietary Visco-lok automatically locking front diff for acres of grip.

A popular choice for those interested in taking the L 570 to work is the option of an LE package — a collection of ‘most wanted’ optional extras bundled together to further reduce costs. Notably, this package includes Can Am’s tri-mode power steering, along with upgrades such as beefier front and rear bumpers and a super-tough seat skin. We’re sure to see a lot of Can Am’s new Defender side-by-side at the forthcoming Northland Field Days, but the 570 L — especially when fitted out with that bundle of extras — is bound to cause a stir as well.
