THE EUCHARIST - THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

"Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; This is my Body.' And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink of it, all of you; for this is my Blood of the Covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins'." (Mat 26:26-28)

God's love for us is poured out in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, where Christ is truly present for us, giving us life and healing.

The Roman Catholic Church has consistently held fast to the belief in the Real Presence.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: The mode of Christ's presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as "the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all sacraments tend." In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole

Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained." "This presence is called 'real' - by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be 'real' too, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present." - The Catechism of the Catholic Church: paragraph 1374

The simplest way to express what Christ asks us to believe about the Real Presence is that the Eucharist is really He. The Real Presence is the real Jesus. We are to believe that the Eucharist began in the womb of the Virgin Mary; that the flesh which the Son of God received from His Mother at the Incarnation is the same flesh into which He changed bread at the Last Supper; that the blood He received from His Mother is the same blood into which He changed wine at the Last Supper. Had she not given Him His flesh and blood there could not be a Eucharist.

We are to believe that the Eucharist is Jesus Christ - simply, without qualification. It is God become man in the fullness of His divine nature, in the fullness of His human nature, in the fullness of His body and soul, in the fullness of everything that makes Jesus - Jesus. He is in the Eucharist! Rev. John Harden, S.J.

On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, our bishop has asked that each parish hold a HOLY HOUR FOR RECONCILATION AND RECOMMITMENT with regard to child abuse. This date coincides with the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” and provides an opportunity for us to seek the Lord’s help in dealing with a serious, ongoing issue in the Church.

In order to have a better turn out for the adoration we will be holding this Holy Hour on Tuesday, June 12, as we begin our 24 hour of Adoration. We also ask that if you are not able to join us at that time for the prayers that you stop by some time and pray for the Protection of all Children and for an end of all types of Abuse, especially the Sexual Abuse of Children.

Dear Parishioners,

As mentioned in the bulletin on May 3rd, our Parish Council has been helping us to discern areas of outreach in the parish to those in need: a Special Religious Educa-tion Program for those with physical and mental needs; PADS (which began here this past week and will be here for three months); the dream of a Parish Nurse in the fu-ture; and the need for a Spanish Mass.

The Spanish Mass will begin on the weekend of the Feast of St. John the Baptist, Sun-day, June 24th, in order to meet the needs of a growing population of Spanish speaking people who live within our parish. Our official boundaries include the western part of Wheaton starting south of the railroad tracks at Pierce Street on the east, and north of the railroad tracks at Woodlawn. We go west to West Chicago ending at Prince Crossing Road and to the north a bit of Carol Steam to the Great Western Trail, to the south to Mack Road. Our parishioners who have been going to St. Mary’s for Spanish Mass have found it hard to squeeze into the overcrowded six Spanish Masses in their tiny church building and find it far to go to St. Isidore’s. The two areas most obvious to us of Catholics who speak Spanish and who live within the boundaries are those who live in “Marion Park”, near Marion Joy, to the southeast of the parish buildings, and those who live in the “Woodlawn” (“Whiskey Creek”) neighborhood to the west, as well as those scattered throughout the parish.

For several years the Diocesan Office of Catholic Schools has been asking us to do better re-cruitment for St. John’s School among the Hispanic Catholic population of our community, and by inviting them to go to mass here is a key step in helping them to know that they are a part of our community and that our parish and school are open to them, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Two weeks ago we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. They went out and spoke to people who could hear them in each of their languages. The “Catholic Church” (Universal Church) is sent by Christ to preach the Gospel to all God’s chil-dren everywhere of every nation, race and language.

We are so very proud of the young men from our parish, Shawn Cieslik and James Malik, who are studying for priesthood for our diocese. This summer our own Shawn Cieslik is being sent by the diocese to study Spanish in Guatemala, to help more of the people of our diocese when he is ordained a priest in four years.

It’s that time again! Our parish is holding a “Spring” clothing drive for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. We are in need of all types of clothing, shoes, lin-ens, blankets, coats, kitchen items, and all varieties of household items. As of January 1st, for your convenience, we are now accepting all computer equipment, monitors, fax machines, radios and televisions for recycling.

Our volunteers will hand out heavy duty white do-nation bags after all the masses on June 16th and June 17th. Please return them on June 23rd and 24th. Spiritual Adoption Pro-gram, Sponsored by the

Ladies Auxiliary of Fr. McGivney

Happy Birthday, Spiritually Adopted Baby!

Your spiritually adopted baby was born this month-nine months after her mother con-ceived her. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support system of the baby. She is no different now than before birth except that she breathes and eats differently. She is truly a miracle. She be-gan as a 46-chromosome cell and has grown over the past nine months into this unique human baby we now can see. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is exactly like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved her life. Thank you on behalf of all the little babies and their mothers for your loving prayers that helped to bring them to birth “so that they might have life and have it to the full!”

Give prayerful thanks to God for his most precious gift to hu-manity-Jesus Christ, His only son.

The information provided in the articles over these past weeks and months was received from the Joliet Diocesan Life Office.

SPARE CHANGE SAVES BABIES THANK YOU for your participation in this charitable project that will help teens and young women in need who are faced with an unexpected pregnancy. If you did not re-ceive a "Baby Bottle for Life" when they were distributed after Masses last month, please stop by and pick one up in the marked box in the entryway to the parish offices. Place the

baby bottle in a prominent place at home where all in the family may add spare change over the next several weeks. The return dates are June 16-17. (We have received some early returns---THANK YOU!) All donations will help support the life-saving work of Woman's Choice Services, which is a non-profit preg-nancy resource center which aids women by providing compassionate counseling, social service referrals, and material goods, With this help, women see they have a real choice for themselves and their infants. This is a wonderful way to show your support for life and for children to learn the beauty of giving to help others. Thank you for participating in this worthy cause.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and

Blood of Christ Today’s Gospel gives St. Mark’s ac-count of Jesus gathering his disciples for a last supper, revealing to them a new covenant established through his own sacrificial blood. Every time we

participate in the Eucharist, we make a pledge to renew and deepen our partici-pation in Christ’s covenant in practical ways. For the steward, that means mak-

ing daily, personal sacrifices to strengthen this covenant relationship

such as deepening our relationship with the Lord in prayer, supporting our par-

ish, and giving comfort to the poor. Now is a good time to reflect on what we can do to strengthen our covenant with the Lord and our community in

practical ways.

A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom: June 21-July 4, 2012

On the St. John the Baptist Parish website (stjohnwinfield.org), there is a link to daily prayers that families and individuals can pray during “A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom: June 21-July 4, 2012.”

"The better we live our Catholic faith, the better we serve our country. Love of God and love of country go hand in hand." - Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Archdiocese for the Military Services USA

On May 21, 2012, the Diocese of Joliet and Joliet Catholic Charities joined 43 other dioceses, charities, hospitals, schools and religious or-ganizations across the nation in a large and coordinated legal chal-lenge to the HHS mandate. Dioceses nationwide are exhorted to pray during a "Fortnight for Freedom," from June 21-July 4, in support of

religious freedom. During these dates, our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power -- St. John Fisher and St. Tho-mas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Our U.S. Bishops have called us to get informed, pray, and advocate.
