WHAT’S HOT NOW

Need a little extra luck? Take a tip from Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker who have fallen for the quirky charm of Carolina Bucci’s jewellery. The new collection, inspired by lucky motifs such as hearts and peace symbols, has just landed at S*uce, from Dhs1,130. Bracelets, from

“She was free!” said Karl Lagerfeld of Coco Chanel. “She wasn’t married, she was not the victim of family life,

husband, children; she could do what she wanted.” Now a film script has been written for French actress

Audrey Tautou, who bears an uncanny likeness to the designer. Set to start filming in 2008, it should be a

fashion lover’s dream, and with two other films about Madame Chanel in the works, Coco is the muse du jour.

Pistol Panties designer Deborah Fleming packed 35 bikinis for her honeymoon. You’ll love her latest collection, filled with quirky prints

and strong, summery colours. Her look-good-in-a-bikini secret?

“Be confident – and smile!”

French actress Eva Green, also known as the thinking man’s Bond girl, is about to bewitch us as the face of Midnight Poison, Dior’s fifth version of their blockbuster scent, launching in September. Announcing the new campaign in Paris last month, John Galliano said, “I hope you fall under the same spell I did.”

MOTORING - SUPERCARS

My love affair with the Alfa brand began as a young boy. Waiting for my mother to pick me up from school, I would be excited to be going home. Not because I disliked school, it was just that I really loved being driven in her Alfa 1750 GT. This dark blue, leather upholstered, wooden steering wheeled beauty had all the attributes that make the Alfa brand

famous, and desirable. The car is still regarded as a classic and holds appeal to this day. Not surprising considering that only 44,276 of the vehicles were produced, with the last one rolling off the line in 1972. Looking at the power output of 88kw and a 0-100km/hsprint of 9.3 seconds, it still holds its own against some of the modern day boy-racers.

etropolis. The word brings to mind achingly tall buildings, Gothic cityscapes and the optimism that has fuelled urban skylines the world over. It recalls the heyday of the Modern Movement, the 1920s and 30s, when skyscrapers were still those wondrous creations that our culture had never witnessed before, and Man was newly possessed of an unmitigated faith in the cities to which these dazzling towers lent their height. Metropolis puts you in mind of Fritz Lang’s 1927 classic film of the same name, where the action takes place in a mythical city of elegant skyscrapers. Think steel, sheet glass, concrete and modern times...

DESIGNOMITEIn search of what turns every day items into cutting edge masterpieces, we discovered that the smallest designs create the biggest of bangs!

Gold went to Daddy Buy Me a Pony for Afro II Maga-zine for Spier. Creative genius Peet pienaar outdone himself this time, with the second issue of his award winning publication Afro magazine.

Liberally interpreted, Afro is a magazine. Eschew-ing the strict linear chronology of a bound magazine format, Afro consists of a series of loose inserts, ranging from A3-sized printed sheets to a beer mat-sized collection of African football club logos. Folded and neatly held together by elastic, the magazine arrives sized not much larger than a standard Post-it note stack . .

Afro has emerged at a time when alternative publications are slowly infiltrating the South African marketplace. Unlike the rather lacklustre designs of its competitors, Afro arrived fully dressed for the occasion. While its ornate visual language is entirely peculiar to Pienaar, his project nonetheless manages to evoke something of the graphic naivety of the continent that inspired his vision.

MIND BLOWINGMAGAZINES

100% NEW

In 1999 Neil Roaks creative head of Modern Museum, opened a unique clothing, lifestyle and homeware outlet, The Space, in Johannesburg. After banging heads together with Amanda Laird-Cherry and Colleen Eitzen, both from the nationally renowned and respected Durban Design Emporium, and Greg Roche of Egg Design, Neil was able to spread his wings and open outlets in Durban, and most recently The Mother City.

The store steers away from the norm and offers a somewhat unusual and interesting mix of clothing and accessories as well as goodies for the home such as hand pained cushions, funky ornaments and a very interesting concept of a magazine shaped like a box – nothing one would usually find in just any high street department store! The bulk of items are designed by budding South African designers who are now given the opportunity to barter their wares in intimate and exclusive retail environments in three of the country’s most popular shopping malls.

THE PROPERTYBIG BANGComplimenting Mark Kenyon of the developers S J Properties and his design team headed by Gapp Architects, the same group which was responsible for the Arabella Sheraton, Ms Collins said that not only was “The Waterkant” superbly situated, offering views and convenient access to the City’s trendiest precinct, it also incorporated a “wonderful balance” of upmarket retail facilities that “will make living here a real pleasure” ‘What Mark and his design team have created is not only a range of beautifully appointed apartments which can only be highly at-tractive to investors and occupiers alike, but he has packaged them into a development that incorporates a real classy array of ground floor retail traders where the accent will be on gourmet food and high class restaurants and bistros.

SHOPPINGTROLLEYWe took to the streets in search of what turns mundane every day items into cutting edge masterpieces, and discovered that some of the smallest designs create the biggest of bangs!

Following the company’s launch at last year’s 100% Design show in London on 23rd September 2004, WOWBOW seems to have struck a cord amongst animal lovers as well as those who just admire the unique design application. The collection of acrylic pet furniture definitely stood out amongst the sea of stunning but familiar interior design products.“It was lovely to watch people walk by our stand, stop in their tracks and just stand there with a huge grin forming as they realised what we were show-ing!” said Kim Bull, founder and creative director of WOWBOW.

“Since our launch, we’ve had interest from all over Europe, the US, Australia, Russia and Hong Kong” reports Kim “It’s been a whirlwind, we always hoped we’d engage like minded souls and are enthused that there appears to be so many of them”.

For further information: please feel free to contact Kim Bull at WOWBOW on: T: +44 (0) 20 8995 1761.

The most talked-about stand at this year’s show was ... ours. Don’t take our word for it though – trend guru Li Edelkoort insisted on having the giant blow-up Protea photographed, while admiring visitors snapped away with cameras and cellphones. This work of genius was thanks to the team from local design agency Daddy Buy Me A Pony. A lucky handful of new subscribers also left with a Kartell lamp from Twiice International.

PIt was the view that convinced them. Not that the extraordinary vista was immediately obvious to uni-versity friends and creative collaborators Aidan-John “AJ” Rothman and George Boorsma. When they first visited the empty plot of land on Melville’s Fourth Av-enue where AJ’s audacious urban dwelling currently stands, they decided they needed to go up – literally – and have a look.

“We built scaffolding on the empty site,” explains George, a partner with Johannesburg-based archi-tecture and design firm INK. “When we got up to the third level it was a dream world; it is just such an amazing view of the city. There was absolutely no doubt in our minds that it had to be a three-storey building.”Working closely with AJ, George designed a recti-linear urban dwelling. Standing in the “belly” of the

house, an 8- x 16-metre mixed-use ground-floor parking and entertainment area, flanked at the rear by a small indigenous garden, George explains his design strategy. “Essentially, we pushed the house up to get the view.”Some of the neighbours were anxious when they heard that there would be three storeys. There was concern about the house’s elevation and break in continuity with Melville’s architectural legacy but, in fact, it didn’t contravene any city bylaws. As George explains, the outcome presents a useful model for urban living. Some context here is useful. In 2002, the City of Johannesburg announced its Spatial Development Framework, a policy that aims to “contain the horizontal spread” (or sprawl) of the city by fostering suburban densification. Working on sub-divided plots of land, such as the one AJ acquired in Melville, Johannesburg residents are

fully entitled to go up three storeys. The benefits are quantum. In this Melville house they only become apparent as you move up the concrete stairs to the sectioned-off first-floor area. It comprises three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a television room. The master bedroom is located street-side and faces northeast. The panoramic bedroom view looks out over a forested suburban expanse.“Although it is not enormous, the space has been well utilised,” says George of the integrated bedroom and bathroom area. The large windows play an important role here, opening up the room. Privacy being an issue, each window is fitted with a horizon-tally retracting screen. These function as on-demand walls. Looking from the bedroom down at the neigh-bouring homes, the house’s elevation reveals its key charm: the viewer’s participation in the city.“It is about waking up on a Sunday morning and hav-

ing this connection with the city,” explains George. “The other thing is that there is a social connection with the buzz on the street below.” In keeping with the rest of the home, the master bedroom’s decor is deliberately spare. An asym-metrical lighting arrangement suggests the reduced approach to interior styling.

“My brief was to interpret the interior so that it sup-ported and enhanced the expression of the building,” says Lisebo Mokhesi, George’s partner in INK. The functional and decorative elements have a soft, restrained colour palette – even the furniture – much of it designed by INK. Key pieces include a bed on a glass base and kiaat frame, located in a guest bedroom, as well as the dining-room table and lounge settees. The latter two pieces are strategically placed on the second floor – the home’s dramatic centrepiece.

“Instead of putting the lounge on the lower level we turned the house upside down to show the views,” says George. “It is quite a shock when you come up here and see Johannesburg from above – it is an amazingly beautiful city.”

“The view is obviously fantastic,” says AJ, but it is not the only charm of the integrated kitchen, lounge and pool area on top. “The previous place I stayed in was an entertainer’s nightmare – it had the lounge in one part of the house, a separate kitchen and then the pool in the backyard. Invariably, when I was entertaining, functions would be split between those various parts. It was a specific requirement that I wanted all of that together.”

Standing on the top floor, it is easy to let the impres-sive views detract from an appreciation of the actual structure, particularly the distinctive architectural logic it adheres to. Viewed objectively from outside, the geometrically precise dwelling reminds of earlier attempts to define a modern architecture suited to this country’s sunny and temperate climate – before the Tuscan invasion put pay to that.George admits as much, describing this Melville home as follows: “The house is an International Style modernist building.” In an article published in 1962, architect Alan Lipman identified four local homes built in this style. They were all characterised by their love of clean, crisp forms; reliance on the interplay of simple geometric wholes; and their use of the materials produced by industrialism – glass, steel and concrete. In many ways this Melville home is strikingly resonant of House Harris, a small, two-bed-room home built in Johannesburg during the early 1930s. Lipman celebrated House Harris for its easy flow of spaces and continuity of floor surface from internal to external spaces.

“This place does not really have transitional spaces between indoor and outdoor because of the tight urban environment,” admits George. “The whole house becomes a balcony – you have that transi-tional space inside. When you slide the walls away, suddenly the exterior and interior are completely connected.”Pointing my attention to the rust stains on the recently poured concrete, he adds: “That kind of patina is exactly what the house is about. We looked at modern ma-terials but also quite simple, raw materials. We are certainly trying to do modern buildings – that is where our passion lies – but we are also trying to make a South African architectural state-ment.”
