Mariotto ALBERTINELLI (Florence, 1474-1515) The Adoration of the Infant C. 1505.

Oil and tempera on panel -

diameter 86 cm.

Recently acquired from G. Sarti Gallery

by the Mus?e des Beaux-Arts, Montreal (Canada).

The monumental quality of the figures, cleverly adapted to the circular format, the landscape inspired both by Perugino and by Flemish works and the great vividness of the colours are perfectly in line with the innovations of the High Renaissance. In this masterpiece, Mariotto Albertinelli notably stands apart from his associate Fra'Bartolomeo in the simplification of the figure drawing, the slowing down of the rhythms and overall the search for a classicism inspired by Raphael

Two important books in Italian for academics and connoisseurs

A great 18th/

century woman artist

Maestro to a generation of Florentine painters

ROSA LB A GARRIERA

From the moment Rosalba Camera (born Venice, 1675) presented

a miniature on ivory as her admission piece to the Academy of San Luca in Rome, in 1705, she was considered the inventor of this genre. Her most famous works, howeves, are her pastels, influenced by French portraiture of the period, which she had studied, particularly during her trip to Paris in 1720^1721. Here she visited the great collections and worked for the aristocracy in a crescendo of professional success that would lead her to the height of fame. For example, in 1730, she was called to Vienna to paint the portraits of the imperial family, and became a much sought-after artist at the most sophisticated courts of eighteentlvcentury Europe. Art histO' rians have regarded her work highly, especially Roberto Longhi, who con' sidered her worthy of figuring alongside the great artists of French painting. This volume is the result of years of research and includes the catalogue raisonn? of more than 400 works. It is a new, expanded edition of the monograph published in 1988.

AS n important figure in Florentine painting of the second half of

Lthe 15th century, Cosimo Rosselli (1439^1507?) painted over sixty works, including altarpieces, frescos, panels, miniatures and decorative pieces. His masterpiece is in the Cappella Sistina where, in 1481^1482, he worked alongside Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino and Domenico Ghirlandaio. This book is the result of over 10 years' research in museums and collections across the world, and it is the first systematic study of the life and work of Cosimo Rosselli, with over 200 illustrations. The two introductory essays bring into focus his biography, jour' neys, figurative sources and evolution of style. Equal attention is given to the relationships with his religious and secular patrons, his ties with fellow colleagues, in particular Chimenti, Francesco and Bernardo di Stefano, the work in the studio and his teaching of a

new and important generation of Florentine painters that included, amongst others, Piero di Cosimo, Fra' Bartolomeo and Mariotto Albertinelli. The well documented appendix includes, for the first time, transcripts of all the known documents referning to the painter.
