Marconi’s Early Life

He was the son of an Italian father and an Irish mother.

He liked to experiment with physics and electronics.

He successfully managed to send wireless signals over 1.5 miles away.

He moved to England in 1879 to show off his new invention, the radio.

The First Radio In 1895, in Italy, Marconi sent

the first radio signals. Users of the first radio sets

had to listen using headphones.

It was popular since the television had not been invented.

Large radios were found in most homes.

The existence of the radio waves was predicted in 1864, long before it was discovered.

How a Radio Works

Sound waves vibrating at different frequencies are picked up in the studio by microphones and changed into electrical oscillations of the same frequencies.

These signals are then passed through amplifiers to magnify them.

How it has Changed our Lives

Without radio, we would not have music.

It has been a communication tool.

Many famous people are heard on the radio.

It helps us relax.

How Radio has Changed

Now we have portable radios.

There are more stations.

Little radios have been invented that are known as walkie-talkies because they’re portable and you can talk to someone within miles away.

Thanks to Mr. Marconi, we have the radio.

What is in a Radio?

an antenna the intermediate-frequency amplifier and

detector the audio-frequency processor and amplifier, the speakers.

Today’s Radio Today radios have more

features.

New features are always being added.

Radios no longer look identical. They all look different.

Typewriter By: Alexander

Samuel Soule’ and Carlos Glidden invented the first typewriter in 1867.

www.lazybee.co.uk/1884/

Why did We Need this Invention?

Writing on paper takes time.

They invented the typewriter to help speed up

communication.

The typewriter makes it easier to read someone’s

work.www.jsonline.com/.../ stories/0405sesqui.stm

Why was this Invention Important?

This was important because it has changed life all over the world.

This has changed the future by writing faster than a person writing.

It was used before people got computers.

Typewriter vs. Writing on Paper

Typewriter Pros: It doesn’t take as long as

writing with a pencil. You can keep on going without

breaking a pencil.Cons: When you make a mistake you

have to start all over. It is easy to mess up and hit

the wrong keys. You might run out of ribbon or

typing paper.

Writing on paperPros: You can still go on when you have

a mistake because you would just erase it.

You have a chance to change something when writing on paper.

Cons: It takes a little longer than on a

typewriter. If you don’t have a pencil, how are

you going to write. If you don’t have an eraser, how

are you going to erase your mistakes.

How has the Typewriter Changed our Lives?

This has changed our lives by letting us type faster than a person can write.

Without this invention, the idea of making computers might not have happened.

This invention is so good because papers looked neater.

Transportation Improvements

Wagon & Stagecoach Wagon• Was pulled by either oxen or

horses• It would take months to get

mail and other belongings sent.

• People began looking for faster ways to send people and mail across the United States.

Stagecoach• In 1858, travelers found a new

way to travel – the stagecoach

• Were horse-drawn wagons that traveled in stages

• Moved more quickly than wagons

• Only traveled if weather was good

Pony Express & Transcontinental Railroad

Pony Express• Young men delivered mail on

horseback from Missouri to California in just 10 days.

• It lasted only 1 ½ years and was like a 2,000 mile relay race

• Riders were mostly teenagers, some as young as 13 and paid $25 a week (which was a lot).

• It ended after telegraphs were

invented.

Transcontinental Railroad

• In 1862, the U.S government gave two companies the right to start building the Transcontinental Railroad.

• The Union Pacific began building tracks west from Omaha, Nebraska and the Central Pacific began building east from Sacramento, California.

• Both sides met in 1869 in Promontory Point, Utah.

• Train travel was a faster way to travel.

T-Model vs. Airplane Model T Car• Henry Ford invented it in 1908. • It cost only $950 at first and

cost as little as $280 later.• It was the first time cars were

mass produced, making it keep enough for the average person to buy.

• It could only go 8 miles per hour.

Airplane

•The Wright brothers build Flyer, the world’s first successful airplane in 1903.

•The flight lasted 12 seconds.

•Air flight today is possible because of them.

The Effects of Transportation

We hate to ride on slow transportation. We can get frustrated because it takes a long time. We would like faster transportation than riding on horses. People think faster is better than slower and so they kept inventing transportation that could go faster. Cars today can go as faster than 100 miles per hour. Cars back than could only go 8 miles per hour. Planes also go much faster and farther than they used to. Without faster transportation, we most likely would not be able to travel all over the world like we do today.
