son” and his life in the parable.– All know the lesson on “forgiveness”.– Few ever think about the primary reason for the

parable: to teach the Scribes and Pharisees the need to rejoice over the lost who are found!

The Older Son• Had likely been working in the field. V. 25– Heard music and dancing.– Asked the reason for the festivity:

Reaction From the Older Son• He was angry.– Years of service vs. years of selfish/prodigal living.– Never disobedient– No party for this faithful son.– There was no “counting of his blessings”

• He refused to go in (and rejoice over his brother’s return)

The Father’s Reply• Learning about the older brother’s reaction:– He came out and entreated His son.– Listened to His son’s complaints.– Offers the reason of love and compassion:

‘‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. yours. Conclusion• Brethren, we need to be like the older brother

in that we should serve our father faithfully in the field.

• When it comes to “sinners and tax collectors” who return after being lost, we need to be like our Father and rejoice… it is fitting!
