What is social media?

Social media is content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It's a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologues (one to many) into dialogues (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business. Businesses also refer to social media as user-generated content (UGC) or consumer-generated media (CGM). Source: Wikipedia

Before we can move to the smaller circles we have to be part of the largest circle.

The black line represents a barrier… i.e. Membership.

Once inside the barrier we can move in and out of the 2nd circle with little interference.

To move into the 3rd circle usually requires approval by members or moderators.

What is social media?Information

Similar to news (Fox News, CNN, NBC) or reference (Encyclopedia.com) sites except the content is user submitted and is often open to interpretation, opinion or editorial. After registering for membership on the larger sites (Wikipedia, Digg, Yahoo! Buzz) anyone is allowed to freely add new content and sometimes edit existing content without approval or moderation.

Blogs are typically one-sided heavy on content. One person or a group of like minded people publish content. Most blogs are open to viewing, reading and commenting on by the public.

Forums are part information and part commentary. They are ongoing conversations about a certain topics. Normally locked to public viewing and require membership to read and post.

What is social media?Bookmarking

Similar to using your bookmarks in your browser, social bookmarking provides easy access to websites you find useful or commonly use. Most often used to reference a site you want to remember for later or have the ability to find from any computer that has an internet connection.

Rather than posting a full article or content from a website, social bookmarking allows you to simply provide a link and a brief review or description to a specific URL.

Social bookmarking is often considered a “popularity contest.” The more often a URL is bookmarked the better chance that URL will be viewed as popular by others.
