Music Stores

A website called allofmp3.com used to sell music at a very small price (about 28 cents a song).

When music studios learned about this website, they went to court against allofmp3 but the server that runs the website was based in Russia so some laws don’t apply to it until the Russian government decides to take action.

Music Sites (Cont.)

Eventually allofmp3 was shut down. Later on it reopened in Spain with a

website called Mp3feista.com Once that site was shut down, they

reopened once more in china with mp3panda.com and the government is working on a case against them now.

Illegal downloading programs

Programs like Bear Share and Limewire are things called P2P (peer to peer) servers.

This means that there is no moderator watching what is uploaded and downloaded to the server.

These programs are easy ways for people to have access to illegally downloading almost anything.

Law Suits Viacom sued Youtube for hosting copyright

material. Viacom won the case and got about 1 billion dollars.

In another case, somebody was given 3 years probation, 200 hours of community service, and a $5,400 fine for downloading two movies

In Australia two men were charged with the max penalty of illegal downloading ($66,000 and 10 years of jail time). For downloading and sharing approximately 10,000 Tera bytes of movies. That’s about 10 months worth of movies.

Fines

It only takes one Download to get a fine. If you download one song, you can get a

fine up to $10,000. The maximum fine that can be given for

downloading and sharing copyright material is $66,000 and 10 years jail time.

In my view it is a lot better to buy the material the right way, instead of downloading it and getting stuck with a fine.

Tracking down the users.

In programs like bearshare and limewire, the user downloads from a server that isn’t monitored or controlled. That means that anybody can upload illegal material and anybody can download it.

When someone uploads a song or a movie, it shows what the IP address is of the computer that is uploading.

Tracking down the user (cont.)

The IP address can be used like someone's location. Once the police have your IP address, they can contact the different Internet Service Providers like Verizon or Comcast and find out who is using the IP address that they found.
