Dear Business Partners,
It has now been a year since Premier Tech acquired the international operations of Chronos Richardson. In addition tothis, we are also celebrating the second anniversary of theRichard Simon acquisition. The future of these two companiesis now part of an international operation spanning Europe, Asiaand the America with a vision of being “A local partner witha global reach”.
The past year has been a challenging and rewarding periodfor all of us at Premier Tech Chronos. The focus of all our actions has been “Customer Satisfaction” but also “re-engineeringof our business” in order to remain the outstanding supplierin our industry, in all markets and territories where we areinvolved. This major action was necessary in order to deploythe vision of our parent company, Premier Tech Packaging. This vision has the objective of having the new Premier TechChronos in close touch with its business partners and beinghighly flexible and responsive to the market needs.
We stress at the outset that Premier Tech Packaging’s acquisitions of Chronos Richardson and Richard Simon have

so here – powders, creating a lot of dustwhen being bagged therefore hardly flowing. The task presented to ChronosRichardson by Back-aldrin was to find a concept, fulfilling European HygieneStandards, creatingnearly no dust duringthe bagging processand being flexible in
regard to product change notonly with the bagging line but alsowith the palletiser. The palletiserwould have to identify the in-fedbags, being different in contentand size/weight and direct themto the respective pallet, whichalso could be of different material– wood or plastic. The systemalso needed to be capable of notonly filling open-mouth bags of
different sizes but also the BigBags. The latter should not beequipped with its own weigherbut should be connectable to thespouts of the bagging lines foropen-mouth bags. Finally the lowbuilding height needed also to be considered.
The tailored solution consisted ofthe well known CHRONO-FILL™PBS 500 Bottom-up-Bagging Linein one single-spout-version andone as a twin-spout-version whichwas selected to ensure purity ofthe bakery mixes and additivesby reducing the need to clean themachine.
Due to the alternate operation ofthe spouts, this goal wasachieved. Bag sealing is effectedby a DoBoy FTS HD sealing device. It first seals the in-linerwithin the bag, afterwards folds
the upper edge twice and finallyadheres a stick-over tape. Bothbagging lines operate in parallel. The filled and sealed bags are transported together via one single conveyor belt to the dualcompact palletiser, which incor-porates a bag lift and two palletisingtables currently fed by one singlebag magazine. As the bags enterthe palletiser, a scanner reads theEAN Code printed on them andthen assigns the bags to the correctpallet. In addition to the bagginglines, a movable Big-Bag-Line wasintegrated into the solution. Allthe equipment is PLC controlled. It goes without saying that thebagging lines meet the hygienicstandards DIN EN 1672 part 1and 2
Backaldrin is a well known familyowned company in Asten, Austria.
The business is focussed on developing and supplying bakerieswith bakery mixes and additives. The company extended its production capacity and thus wasin need of weighing, bagging andpalletising equiment. Bakerymixes are in most cases – and
Chronos Richardson has recently completed a major contract to supply afully automatic bag and box filling line forchemical giant Nippon Goshei.
The equipment has been installed at the company’s new 300 million Euros plasticresin plant located near Hull, England. The contract, which is worth over one millionEuros, was awarded to Chronos Richardsonby Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Company Limited, the main engineering contractor for the project.
Nippon Goshei has pioneered the processfor producing high quality, high density plastic resins and from its UK site it will supply customers all across Europe. Thisresin is mainly used as a high quality foodfilm in the rapidly expanding industry of readymeals market. Ironically, another major customer for the resin is also the manufacturerof the bags used to package the product !
Mitsui and Nippon Goshei set strict technicaland process parameters for this vital equipmentin terms of speed, accuracy, reliability and hygiene. The bagging line includes a belt-fed,high speed UBM weigher, automatic MK4bag placer and heat sealer, check-weigher,low level palletiser and shrink wrap equipment. The bagging line is capable of filling either20 or 25 kg bags at speeds up to 600bags an hour. Conservative engineering and design parameters ensure that critical components work well below their ultimatecapability, thereby providing long term reliability. When required, the product can bediverted to the second line, which can automatically fill octabins by multi-dumpingproduct from the weigher to achieve the larger 550 kg target weights. The octabinsare placed automatically onto pallets andthen presented one at a time to the fillingspout. When filled, evacuated and sealed, the box is conveyed away ready for a newone to take its place.
All critical contact parts are constructedfrom polished stainless steel to facilitate product line changes and ensure that thestrict hygiene requirements are met. Giventhe high value of the product, minimising‘giveaway’ whilst still maintaining accuratetarget weights is vital. The design features ofthe UBM weigher and controller optimisetarget weights and automatically compensatefor any minor changes as they occur. For25 kg bags, accuracies of ± 10 g are readilyachieved. Before installing the equipment on site,Chronos had to demonstrate its effective operation during in-house trials witnessed by senior engineers from both Mitsui andNippon Goshei.

INSIDE THE PACKAGING WORLD OF PREMIER TECH…Visual identification by territories
A new look at performance through preventive maintenance
The new industry “buzzword” seems to bePREVENTION all across the board as moreand more companies realize the importanceof preventive maintenance on their equipmentto minimize the possibilities of downtime.People used to call us in panic asking for a field service representative to jump on aplane ASAP to come in and fix the problems. We are undoubtedly facing these types ofsituations less frequently than in the pastdue to the simple fact that people are doingmore maintenance on a regular basis thanbefore. Premier Tech Chronos, a year ago,has initiated an innovative support andservice program called “PM5” (Preventivemaintenance 5) which offers various supportoptions and levels through long-term part-nerships with its customers. Depending onthe level of support the customers have
chosen, Premier Tech’s twenty-two fieldservice representatives (in North Americaand over 50 worldwide) may be asked tocome to site once, twice, three or even sixtimes in a twelve month period. The servicerepresentative will go through a thoroughexamination of the system following a complete module-by-module list of items toverify, all being recorded on paper. At theend of the visit, a complete recommendationsreport is provided to the customer for evaluation and actions to be undertaken (ifneeded).
Reacting VS Preventing – What are thecost differences between them ?
It is difficult to forecast the costs for reactingas opposed to Preventing. It will all depend
on the number of total hours of downtimeor if going to the extremes, the costs oflosing a customer because you could notdeliver an order within the expected time-frame. As your equipment gets older, prevention should become part of yourvocabulary or you will certainly experiencesome unwanted downtimes. Preventingalso means keeping a legitimate number ofspares on your shelves to cover most wearand tear items. Your equipment suppliershould be able to provide you with such alist.
Joining the PM5 program, our customersbenefit from yearly parts rebates, priorityfor on-site service and many other privileges. For further information, we invite you tovisit our web site at : WWW.PM-5.COM
DO YOU REACT OR PREVENT?
AUTOMATION THROUGH INNOVATION
SATISFY THE DISTRIBUTORS ANDEND-USERS
When you are in the concrete industry and
your products are intended to the retail
market, it is not easy to meet distributors
and end-users expectations. Why ? Simply
because bags are covered by concrete
dust and inevitably the wholesaler displays
are dusty as well as the customers’ car
trunks.
In response to its customers demand,
Forwell Materials Inc./ Quikrete of Ontario,
an important North American producer of
concrete mixes, have been searching for a
way to provide its product in cleaner,
stronger esthetical plastic bags with gussetted
bottoms. “Our goal was to revolutionize our
approach to packaging concrete mix materials,
through efficiency, a total consumer marketing
strategy and be first to market.” Lisa
Forwell, President of Forwell Materials Inc.
“We wanted to package our products cleaner
for health and safety of our employees and
customers, more efficiently and cost effective.”
But how can we conciliate dusty products
with cleanliness, quality and estheticism to
preserve its partnership with its distributors
as well as its market share?
REACH EFFICIENCY IN DUSTYENVIRONMENT
Forwell Materials was looking for the
appropriate system to replace its two valve
packers which reached production rates of
18 BPM of 66 lb bags averaging up to
3lbs. of give-away product per bag. They
also wanted to move away from paper bags
because they would often tear and are still
extremely dusty. This project presented several
technical challenges with regards to the
dusty environment, type of product to handle
and the bag material. Sealing a plastic bag
in such dusty environment necessitated
some re-engineering work on the machinery’s
supplier’s side. It was obvious that the need
to find a bagging system which would be
efficient all while raising production rate
and minimizing give-away product was there.
A TOTAL INNOVATION IN THE CEMENTMIXES/CONCRETE INDUSTRY
The use of polyethylene bags for concrete
products is totally new to this industry. In
fact, it is not easy to bag a dusty product
at high temperature (140 - 170 degrees)
with heat-sealable polyethylene bags. The
reason is that poly bags must be strong
enough to take high product temperatures
and at the same time not be too thick to
disable the sealing process. After a long
research period with many suppliers,
Forwell Materials Inc. found the Premier
Tech Chronos FFS-200 Series Horizontal
Form, Fill and Seal Bagger which would
meet its specifications. This automatic
system makes its own bags from rolls of
polyethylene pre-printed center-folded film
(U-film).
RESPECT OF THE DELIVERY DATE
The original version of the FFS-200 has
been modified and adapted to the concrete
mixes application for this particular customer.
To conduct this project, a team of engineers
proceeded with different tests with the
product to ensure the efficiency of the system.
One important factor in the overall success
of the project was to respect the delivery
date of the equipment at customer site. To
do so, the engineering team doubled-up all
efforts to meet the pre-established tight
schedule for the equipment modification,
testing and manufacturing and make sure
that the installation would not affect the
Forwell Materials Inc. plant production.
Considering that the FFS-200 Series tech-
nology is well-known by Premier Tech
Chronos’ engineering team, it took only
2 weeks to make the installation and
commissioning of the system and meet/
exceed the customers expectations.
Although this is a totally new market and
application for this system, there are still a
few minor adjustments to complete before
this experience will be called a total success.
Both Forwell Materials Inc. and Premier
Tech Chronos are working hand in hand as
partners in this to revolutionize the industry
as a whole. “Premier Tech Chronos technical
support has been fantastic throughout this
design , installation and implementation

process”, Lisa Forwell, all little glitches are
ironed out.
NEW SYSTEM, NEW BAGS AND QUICKINVESTMENT PAYBACK
In this specific case, the new equipment
allowed the producer to increase its
production rate up to 25 BPM with this
new system only one bagger. The weight of
each bag respects the original 66 lb per
bag but now the Premier Tech Chronos
UBM- 1100 Duplex Scale above the bagger
is achieving a precision of ± 1 oz (27 g) of
give-away product per unit which is a
tremendous improvement in weight consis-
tency. Only because of this accuracy
improvement, Forwell Materials Inc. gains
up to two complete pallets of filled bags at
the end of each production day. Also, the
Premier Tech Chronos FFS-200 Series
operates with a 40-inche roll capacity allowing
many hours of continuous operation.
Combined with accuracy of filled bags, higher
production as well as the cost for bag
materials (as opposed to paper valve bags),
this new system represents enormous
savings which will all contribute to a quicker
investment payback.
FULFILL ITS GOALS
Forwell Materials Inc., the family business
ownership of this concrete mixing plant
now fulfilled all of its goals ; preserving its
partnership with its distributors and satisfying
end-users, increasing its market share with
cleaner, stronger esthetical plastic bags
with gussetted bottom and first to market
in North America. Finally, they found the
best available technology on the North
American continent to answer their very
specific needs as well as the growing
demand by the end-users.
TIP : LOOK FOR ONE TRUE INTEGRATORAS OPPOSED TO MULTI-VENDORS
Complete integration, turnkey projects or
one single contact are all terms that have
become of great importance for all producers
in any industry. When a corporation gets
involved in bagging operations and focuses
on maximizing throughput therefore minimizing
production costs per unit, they should consider
an equipment supplier that can provide not
only the bagger, but the dosing (feeder/
scale), the bagging, all conveying, palletizing
and stretch wrapping systems as well. Only
a handful of suppliers do the complete
manufacturing and are able to integrate
entire bagging lines from A to Z. Premier
Tech Chronos, with installation worldwide,
can offer imperial designs as well as technical
support locally. For further details, please

UP COMING FAIRS & SHOWS
From May 19th to the 24th, the International Sales Crew of Chronos Richardson sat on booths G23 to G26 in hall 3.
This was the first official show in Germany after the acquisition of Chronos Richardson by Premier Tech. The booth layout was newly designed, new brochures were available and thesales team prepared to give the first feedback to the visitors regardingthe changes that had taken place during the previous five months.
Although the show was not as busy as it was in 2000, many regular customers came to discuss the changes that had takenplace. At the booth, a CHRONOS PAL™ PL 900C compact palletizerwas shown in operation. However, not only existing customers cameto see Chronos Richardson; also many new and very interestingcontacts were made, enabling us to demonstrate our capability andcommitment in our pursuit to find the right solution for all your bagging requirements.
Equipment supplied by PremierTech Chronos will soon be helpingthoroughbred horses get a goodnights sleep.
Nottinghamshire (UK) basedCreature Comforts, which wasset up less than three years agoby husband and wife team Jo andColin Bower, have taken deliveryof a VF volumetric feeder, EM-600baler and AP-200 palletizer aspart of their new 1.7 millionEuros processing plant for manu-facturing their acclaimed rangeof Alfalfa high performance feed

Middle East and Hong Kong, supplying leading owners andtrainers of thoroughbred horses, including the world famous Godolphin Stables. The new plantis capable of producing 700tonnes of bedding per week, equating to a throughput of fivebales per minute. The EM-600baler is designed for packagingcompressible bulk products andfinished bale compression ratioscan be as high as 3:1. The unitis fully automated and has an indexing turntable of four stations. The first two are used to fill the
compression tube and then compress the product to the desired compression ratio. Thethird station closes and seals thebags, while the final station transfersthe filled bag to the conveyor leading to the palletizer. The Premier Tech Chronos equipment
was chosen on the basis of efficiency, speed, price and support. As Jo Bower concludes : ‘This isa very important stage in thegrowth of our company. The factthat we can now process andpack the alfalfa products righthere on the farm gives us totalcontrol over our business. Premier Tech Chronos have beenextremely helpful and supportivethroughout the project and wecan now take on the world market with confidence.’

The world’s first calibrated automatic G scale celebrated its 120th birthday.
On April 12, 1883, when the first calibratedautomatic scale in the world – the well knownChronos G scale – was approved by the‘Kaiserliche Normal-Aichungs-Kommission’ inBerlin, nobody could imagine that this scalemight still be in production more than onehundred years later. Regular orders mean
that this famous scale is still used today. After the first approval in April 1883, anamendment was made on December 18th,
1888, which documented an essential improvement. The scale then received the design name ‘System C’. Commenting aboutthe forthcoming 120th anniversary of the G(gravimetric) type scale, Group Legal Metrology Manager, Wolfgang Euler, quotedthe Spanish philosopher and author JoséOrtega y Gasset: ‘Progress is not to destroy yesterday’s achievements but topreserve its essence which has thepower to create a better today.’
On the occasion of the centerarian approval anniversary of the ‘Selbsttätigen Registrierwaage’ of
Chronos Richardson, Professor Dr.-Eng. M.Kochsiek, Vice-President of PTB* and OIML,expressed his amazement.‘I am informed thatyou are still manufacturing an automaticweighing scale which in its main features corresponds to the one approved a centuryago. This fact is unique in the scale manufacturing industry and proves the outstanding design and the farsightednessof engineers from your company.’
This year, i.e. 20 years later, Mr. ProfessorDr.-Eng. M. Kochsiek gave further emphasis
to his statement from 1988 by sending another letter. Continued customer demandfrom around the world means that Chronosstill manufactures the ‘G’ type scale underthe current PTB approval number 10.14/79.07. The scale is mainly used for free-flowing bulk materials, e.g. grain, and its highaccuracy still keeps within the national and international Weights & Measures error limits. As recently as 1992, the scale was approved in Belgium, in 1996 in Russia andonly last year in 2002 this G-weigher againreceived approval for another five years in Russia.
