Computer Account Activation Overview It is imperative that you activate your CASE network ID so you can access your course materials (Blackboard), your Case eMail account, purchase from the eStore, download from the Software Center and avail yourself of other University technology services. Your CASE ID also gives you access to Weatherhead Network resources such as computer lab usage and network printing at Weatherhead.

• You will not be able to activate your account UNTIL you are in the CASE Student Information System (SIS) and you have your PIN number. Confirmation and your PIN will come from your Admissions co-ordinator. (See list on next page.)

• Before activating your Case account, review the guidelines below for creating a secure password for your account. The rules are strict, but a secure password is your insurance against identity and resource theft.

Activate your Case Account You will be assigned a User Name which is usually your first, middle and last name initials plus a number. If no middle initial, the letter “X” is substituted. Examples are: tms123 and rxl55. You must create your own Password. Read the section below for password rules. Your Email address will be your [email protected] and/or your [email protected] You will need to enter a PIN to activate your account, so have your PIN handy. If you do not have a PIN, contact your program co-ordinator. Note: The “PIN Activation Tool” on the account activation page is intended for Faculty & Staff use. IT does not work reliably for students! Create a SECURE Password Possibly the ‘hardest’ part of the account activation process is creating a password that conforms to the strict CASE security guidelines so your password cannot be “guessed” by hacking software. Remember:

a. Your password must be AT LEAST 8 characters b. Use a combination of letters, numbers & upper & lower case c. BUT, cannot be a word that can be looked up in a dictionary d. NO spaces! NO number strings (e.g., your SSN) e. Your password is ‘case sensitive’.

Got your PIN and a password??? Good! Now, activate your Case Account at: https://its-services.case.edu/middleware/NetworkTools/userReg.html

Laptop Requirement and Configuration Laptop specifications and recommendations can be found at http://www.case.edu/its/estore/documents/comp_specs.pdf. Be advised that, concerning the ability to run the software applications that are required in the Weatherhead curriculum, a WINDOWS/Vista-based PC is preferred over an Apple MAC. If you will be using a MAC at Weatherhead, your MAC should run either Parallels or VMWare Fusion in order to accommodate WINDOWS-only applications. You will also need to purchase a copy of WINDOWS or VISTA.

MACs are supported on the CASE Campus, but are NOT supported at Weatherhead.

Assistance in configuration can be obtained at the University Helpdesk by calling 216-368-HELP (4357).

Case VPN (Virtual Private Network) The Case Cisco VPN is used as a bridge to connect you into the Case Servers and is ONLY needed to connect to University and Weatherhead Network Resources using Wireless or from Off-Campus.

• VPN should be logged into when you are using Wireless while on Campus and need to use Case Network Resources such as printers and Library Research Databases.

• VPN is also used when you are at home and need to get into Case Network Resources such as the Case Library Databases.

• VPN is not a service to provide Internet access. You will still need to use your own personal ISP such as Cable or DSL to access the Internet. VPN will then provide you the access into the Case Servers.

Getting VPN on your computer Instructions for downloading and installing CASE VPN are at: http://intranet.weatherhead.case.edu/help/network/vpn.cfm

Please note, if you are using a company computer, you must have Administrative Configuration Privileges in order to download and install any software.

• Please check with your company’s Information Technology support group to inquire if you have specific privileges that will allow you to download and install software.

After installing VPN, you will need to login to the VPN Client in order to connect. First connect using Wireless or your local Internet Service Provider from home. • To start using VPN you would click on the Start Button on the left bottom corner of your

computer screen, then select the Programs button, and then click on the Cisco VPN option. • You will need to log into the Cisco CPN client before accessing the Case Library Research

Databases. • When on Campus, your wireless card will automatically detect the Case Wireless Access

Points and provide you with access to the Internet. You only need to turn on and log into VPN if you need to access Case Network Resources such as printers and Case Library Databases while on campus.

Network Printer Usage The Lab Laser is the primary printer for student use. The Lab Laser is available during Computer Lab hours and is located in PBL 07 – Lower Level. As with all Weatherhead School of Management network resources, these printers should be used for educational purposes only. Misuse will result in the suspension or loss of your Weatherhead network account. Refer to “Configuring Your Laptop” for instructions for installing the Lab printer.
