INDONESIA : Geographical Facts

Comprises of more than 17,000 islands and islets, 5 main islands,

30 smaller archipelagoes which about 6,000 are inhabited.

A crossroad between two oceans, the pasific and indian oceans and a bridge between two continents Asia and Australia.

INDONESIA : Population & Culture

Population : 240 million people Age structure : 0-14 years is 28.1 % , 15-64 years is 66 % and 65 years and over is 6% of population

A great number of population and wide spectrum of culture in Indonesia have always been a potency

Indonesia covers 1,3% of the earth landmass, yet it is HOME for many BIO species in the world : - 10% of the world’s flower, 17% of the world’s bird species and 25% of the world’s fish species species and etc

INDONESIA : economy

Through the ICT, government is consistently encouraging economic growth by creating new jobs, developing people

empowerment programs and other programs to support the economy

In 2009, recorded a growth of 4,4% in economy. (world rangking: 33) In 2009, GDP (purchasing power parity) : USD 968.5 billion (world rangking :16) Labor force : 113.3 million (world rangking:5)

Indonesia’s Information Society, a society in which the creation, distribution, diffusion, use,

integration and manipulation of information is a significant economic, political, and cultural activity in everyday life

ICT Progress

One provider and 2 optic fiber routes in 2004 but, in 2009, there are 6 major providers with 9 optic fiber routes for the international backbone and 5 major providers which cover large islands in Indonesia, Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. In 2009, Indonesia has reached 75% teledensity with, previously 43000 blank spots from 72000 villages, only 7000 blank spots remaining from 82000 villages Government Regulation No.28/2005 and Decree of Ministry of Communication and Information Technology No.15/2005 about Universal Service Obligation (USO).

It was a healthy competition among the providers that made it all possible. And, this leads to a bigger number of cellular users in Indonesia, reaching a number of 180 million users which is around 80% of Indonesia’s 238 million lives, and this number of cellular users grows 20% per year.

Meanwhile, internet users in Indonesia are around 45 million

users and it is presumed to reach about 50 million users by the end of 2010.

Era of convergence leads to new opportunities Those opportunities are not only open for electronic

gadgets produced by giant industries from European, American, Japan, but also recently China which impressively is able to produce hi-tech gadgets with affordable price.
