LITTLE ROCK, AR - On Wednesday November 2nd, the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Niña’, replicas of Columbus’ ships will open in Little Rock. The ships will be docked at Riverfront Park, turn off Clinton on Arch St for Parking Lot until their departure early Tuesday morning November 8th.

The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology Magazine called the ship “the most historically

correct Columbus replica ever built.” The “Pinta” was recently built in Brazil to accompany the ‘Niña’ on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fi fteenth century.

Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - It’s a tragic ending. A UALR student reported missing Wednesday,

October 12 is dead. The mother of 20-year-old Patricia Guardado Garcia reported her missing when she didn’t show up for class, in the morning, to work that afternoon or to babysit

relatives that night. Ever since then authorities, family, and friends have been combing the area looking for her.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Es un fi nal trágico. Una estudiante de la UALR reportada desaparecida el miércoles 12 de octubre está muerta. La madre de Patricia Guardado García de 20 años de edad, denunció su desaparición cuando no se presentó a clases por la mañana, a trabajar por la tarde o a cuidar niños en casa de familiares por la noche. Desde entonces las autoridades, familiares y amigos han estado peinando la zona buscándola.

El domingo 16 de octubre un pescador descubrió un cuerpo en una cantera de piedra en el Condado de Pulaski. El lunes la policía confi rmó que era Patricia.

Los peores temores de la familia se hicieron realidad cuando los esposos Guardado García recibieron la llamada que habían estado temiendo.

Su hija fue encontrada muerta y se confirmó que había sido asesinada.

María García, madre de Patricia, lloraba y gritaba el lunes preguntándose quién habría matado a su hija y por qué. “Me siento perdida, ¿cómo puedo seguir viviendo”, dice.

Las palabras no pueden describir el dolor que la Sra. García viene sintiendo al saber que su hija fue raptada en una playa de estacionamiento, asesinada y arrojada a un estanque. García mira directamente a la cámara y le habla al asesino, “¿por qué hizo esto?”

El asesinato sin resolver de Patricia tiene a muchas personas en esta comunidad con los nervios de punta. Ella se hizo en humo a plena luz del día y la policía señala que no se sabe si el asesino es alguien que ella conocía o un extraño.

Ella aparcó en el estacionamiento utilizado por los estudiantes en la calle frente a la UALR. La policía dice que ella a menudo estacionaba en esa lugar. Los investigadores

On Sunday, October 16 a fisherman discovered a body in a rock quarry in Pulaski County. Monday, police confirmed it was Patricia.

The family’s worst fears became true when the Garcia Guardados got the call they’ve been dreading. Their daughter was found dead and it was confirmed she was killed.

Maria Garcia, Patricia’s mom, cried and scream Monday asking who would kill her daughter and why. “I feel lost,

how can I continue living,” she says.

Words cannot describe the pain Garcia is feeling since finding out her daughter was taken from a parking lot, murdered and dumped in a pond. Garcia looks directly into the camera and talks to the killer, “why did you do this?”

Patricia’s unsolved murder has many in this community on edge. She vanished in broad daylight and police say they just don’t know if her killer is someone she knew or a stranger.

She parked in a parking lot students park across the street from UALR. Police says she often parked in the lot. Investigators processed the car she was driving but won’t say if anything suspicious was found inside.

The International Business student was suppose to be in class at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday but never made it there. She was last seen leaving her family’s Little Rock home after 8:00 am that morning.

Police are urging anyone who may have been in this area

around UALR and the Burger King that morning and saw Patricia to contact them.

Authorities tell Channel 7 her ex-boyfriend has been questioned but they will not say if he is a person of interest.

While Little Rock Police are leading the investigation, the Pulaski County Sheriff ’s Department is assisting and sent dive teams back out to the pond near Sweet Home where Patricia’s body was found to look for evidence.

LITLE ROCK, AR - La gripe es una enfermedad grave y es hora de que los residentes de Arkansas se hagan vacunar contra la gripe. A partir de esta semana y hasta la primera semana de noviembre, el Departamento de Salud de Arkansas (ADH, por sus siglas en inglés) está colocando la vacuna contra la gripe estacional en las clínicas de vacunación masiva contra la gripe en todos los condados. Una clínica de vacunación masiva contra la gripe es un evento de un día de duración durante el cual la comunidad se congrega para vacunar al mayor número posible de personas. El personal del ADH, profesionales de la salud y voluntarios trabajan en equipo para colocar la vacuna. Algunas clínicas ofrecen “servicio al auto” - ni siquiera tendrá que bajar de su coche.

La Clínica de Vacunación Masiva en Littler Rock estará localizada en la Arkansas State Fairgrounds el 8 de Noviembre de las 9:00am a las 6:00pm.

LITLE ROCK, AR - Flu is a serious illness and it’s time for Arkansans to get their flu vaccinations. Beginning this week and continuing through the fi rst week of November, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) is providing seasonal fl u vaccine at mass fl u clinics in every county. A mass fl u clinic is a day-long event during which the community comes together to immunize as many people as possible. ADH staff, health professionals and volunteers work as a team to provide vaccine. Some clinics offer “drive-throughs” – you don’t even

leave your car.The Mass Flu Clinic in Littler

Rock is scheduled on November 8 from 9:00am to 6:00pm at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds.

Dr. Paul Halverson, state health offi cer and ADH director, said, “Flu can be a serious illness, and we lose roughly 23,600 Americans to complications from flu each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is encouraging everyone six months and older to get the vaccine. Last year, the ADH and private providers vaccinated more than 700,000 Arkansans for seasonal fl u and H1N1 infl uenza A. Even with this incredible effort, we lost

53 Arkansans to complications from fl u. Preventing the fl u is up to you. Please get your vaccine and encourage your family members to do so, too.”

If you have insurance, the ADH will ask your insurance company to pay for the cost of giving the vaccine. If you have insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or ARKids First, bring your cards with you so that we can fi le with your insurance company. If you do not have insurance or your insurance company does not pay, the vaccine will be no charge to you.

Flu is a sickness that infects the nose, throat and lungs and is caused by the infl uenza virus. If you’re young and healthy, the fl u vaccine may be 70 to 90 percent effective in preventing illness.

Children eight years and younger who have never received seasonal fl u vaccine before will need a second dose of vaccine for full protection. Parents will need to contact a local ADH health unit or health care provider, see if vaccine is available and take their children in for a second dose four weeks after the fi rst vaccination.

Over the last 50 years, flu

vaccines have been shown to be safe. All fl u vaccines are made the same way. An average of 100 million doses of infl uenza vaccine is used in the United States each year, and flu vaccines have an excellent safety record.

Reactions to flu vaccines might include a mild soreness and redness near the site of the shot and perhaps a little fever or slight headache. The nasal spray vaccine’s side effects may include runny nose, headache and wheezing, but the fl u vaccine cannot give you the fl u.

There are very few medical reasons to avoid the fl u vaccine. They include life-threatening reactions such as anaphylaxis to a previous dose of the fl u vaccine or to eggs, or a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome. Persons with a non-life threatening egg allergy may be vaccinated but need to see a doctor specializing in allergies.

Infl uenza symptoms include fever over 100 degrees, headache, extreme fatigue, sore throat, muscle aches, dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, and occasionally stomach symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

The infl uenza virus is spread

through coughing or sneezing and by touching a hard surface with the virus on it and then touching the nose or mouth. The best way to prevent the fl u is to get vaccinated each year.

LRPD Chief Stuart Thomas, “I would say the same thing to UALR students that I would say to anybody who is anywhere is be aware of your surroundings, look over your shoulder and make sure you are aware and comfortable in your movements and if you see anything that makes you uncomfortable, makes you suspicious then contact 911 and we’ll respond.”

So far no arrests have been made. Police are not releasing details of how she was killed or how long she has been in the pond.

UALR Chancellor Joel E. Anderson said, “Our worst fears have come true. I am shocked and saddened by this news. The hearts of all of us at the university go out to Patricia’s family and friends. The investigation continues in the hands of the Little Rock Police Department. University officials are cooperating in the investigation. At this point we do not have information about memorial services. The university is making counselors available for students and employees who are struggling with this tragic event.”

in the area.Everyday friends, family

and supporters who have been handing out missing person fl yers gather in North Little Rock to pray for her safe return, now they’re mourning the loss of 20-year old Patricia Guardado and asking why.

Patricia’s mother cries, “What wrong did my daughter do that you would take her life.”

She sits outside leaning on friends and family for supports, hoping someone out there who knows something will see her pain and anguish and come forward.

Garcia says, “How can

somebody do something this horrible?”

Her father Martin Guardado says, “I had a feeling something bad happened but not this kind of bad.”

Martin says, “My daughter was so nice, she was part of my heart.”

Family tells Channel 7 that Patricia’s four young siblings haven’t stopped crying since she disappeared, making everyone more emotional.

He looks at his wife and kids crying, “I need to be strong and I’m going to try to make it. I want to say if anybody knows something to call police.”

Community Vigils were held at UALR and at St. Edwards Catholic Church.

Funeral services for Patricia Guagardo Garcia were celebrated at her Home Church of 20 years, St. Edward’s Catholic Church by rev. Msgr. R. Scott Friend and Rev. Jason Tyler.

A reward is being offered for any information leading to an arrest and police have set up confi dential tip line. A $5,000 reward was raised, meant to fi nd Patricia. Her father, Martin Guardado says now it will go to fi nd the person or people who took his daughters life.

REWARD DETAILS: A $1000 reward is being offered by Little Rock Police Crime Stoppers. Another $1,000 is being offered by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Offi ce and the reward money by the family has grown to $5,000. People can donate to the Metropolitan Bank in North Little Rock off McCain where Patricia worked. Relative Reggie Koch with the Koch Law Firm is offering an additional $1,000 on top of that already offered.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - For many families in Arkansas Halloween is a time for children to dress up as their favorite superheroes, cartoon characters or what they want to be when they grow up. It’s a time for practical jokes and trick-or-treating. More than anything, it’s a time to have fun and enjoy being with family and friends.

ARKids First wants to remind families about good oral health during Halloween. In fact, Halloween is a perfect opportunity to teach your children about good oral health habits. There are five easy tips to help prevent cavities during this sugar-overload season:

Halloween Candy vs. Cavities: Don’t Make Kids Choose. Don’t deny your children the Halloween experience. That can send the entirely wrong message – deprivation. They may

end up sneaking sweets or eating too much candy once they’re out on their own. Instead, let them have the joy of Halloween in all its sticky goodness.

Set a Treat Time. Set a time of day to eat Halloween candy. This ritual “treat time” may last long after Halloween and help promote healthy thinking about treats. Children learn that eating sweets shouldn’t be an all-day feast. Moderation is key.

Set Up a Teeth Brushing Schedule. No matter when treat time is, it’s crucial to brush soon after. If it is nighttime, for example, brushing and flossing teeth before bed will help sweep away the recent sweets.

Use Disclosing Tablets, Swabs, or Solution. Some dentists use ‘’disclosing tablets” to spot plaque on teeth. These chewable tablets temporarily stain the plaque. Parents can also use disclosing tablets, solution, or swabs to show children how

well they are brushing or flossing their teeth.

Keep Teeth Brushing Fun. You should replace toothbrushes every three or four months anyway, so make Halloween an occasion for getting your child a new brush. Dentists say that when children like the toothbrushes, they are more apt to enjoy brushing.

LITTLE ROCK, AR – October 15th the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month is a day where National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) members around the country promote and sponsor activities that respond to the state of HIV/AIDS among Hispanics and Latinos in their specifi c communities.

The Arkansas Minority Health Commission (AMHC) and Partners, UAMS, Arkansas Mexican Consulate, Ventanilla de Salud, Jefferson Comprehensive Care Systems, Arkansan Human Development Corporation,

Catholic Charities and the Arkansas Department of Health hosted a free Community Health Fair and Education Forum in partnership with the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) at the Second Baptist Vision Christian Academy were hundreds attended. Special guest was the Mexican international comedian, television host, actor and producer Fernando Arau and Al “Paparap’ Lopez served as the event MC.

By the end of 2010 Arkansas’ cumulative total HIV cases were 7,923 of which 272 (3.3%) reported to be Hispanic. Limited access to prevention and care, cultural barriers, language barriers, and immigration status

Job duties include performing skilled & semi-skilled tasks such as carpentry, metal work, masonry, tread repair, & tree & shrub trimming/removal. Must be able to service & operate trail maintenance vehicles & equipment such as tractors, winches & chainsaws. Extensive travel required. Must have a valid driver’s license, be able to traverse rough terrain & work in all types of conditions. Will check driver’s record. Paid holidays. seekers who need a job, want to further their education or need to upgrade their job skills should attend the Arkansas Workforce Centers’ Career Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.

This is the third year for the event, which is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services and Arkansas Workforce Centers. This year more than 130 exhibitors, including employers and education and training

providers, are registered to attend, with around 8,500 jobs available.

“The career expo this year is shaping up to be bigger and better than in past years,” said Arkansas Department of Workforce Services Director Artee Williams. “We have partnered with an impressive group of employers and education and training providers who bring active job openings and education and training opportunities to the event.”

New this year, the expo will include a Veterans Center to assist veterans with their

employment needs. Many veterans are returning from deployment and transitioning back into the civilian workforce. Exhibitors in the Veterans Center will provide employment information and assistance to veterans who are either looking for jobs or seeking to upgrade their skills.

The event also will feature a mini-Arkansas Workforce Center, with several computers for résumé preparation and job searches. Attendees are encouraged to bring their résumés to the event. Workforce Center staff will be available to

review résumés and provide feedback.

Workshops will be held throughout the day covering such topics as résumé preparation, interviewing tips and job search techniques.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - On Tuesday, November 8, a special election will be held for an important job-creation project that will decide the future of Arkansas’s interstates. If approved by voters, the 2011 Interstate Rehabilitation Program will authorize our Highway Commission to re-issue $575 million in bonds. These bonds will allow us to continue the work of modernizing our interstates. The re-construction work will create jobs, and better roads will improve economic development. And most important, these benefits will come without raising taxes. While the election is set for the 8th, early voting on the bond election begins November 1.

The upkeep of our interstate system is an ongoing expense, and bond proposals like this one have proven to be an effective and cost-efficient solution. In 1999, Arkansas voters overwhelmingly approved a virtually identical measure that led to the re-construction of 356 miles of interstate highways. However, there are still more than 300 miles

of interstate in Arkansas that need immediate improvement.

Continuing the bond program will save the State money in two primary ways. First, the cost of road construction continues to rise, so the sooner we get to work modernizing these roads, the more we can avoid inflation. Second, the longer we wait, the further our roads will deteriorate. Roads that become increasingly worse become increasingly expensive to repair.

Approval of this measure will create about 28,000 construction jobs. In the long-term, the economic potential is even greater. Part of Arkansas’s attractiveness to businesses is the lower shipping costs accommodated by our central geography. But our location is a selling point only if we have the infrastructure required to support companies and their transportation networks. As one of our state’s most important economic-development and job-creation tools, modern highways will allow us to effectively compete with our surrounding states.

For all of these reasons, it is not surprising that this proposal has widespread bipartisan backing. The money will fund maintenance projects statewide, so everyone will benefit. And there’s nothing to be gained by voting this measure down. While taxes will not go up if the bond is approved, they also won’t go down if voters reject the proposal.

It wasn’t that long ago that Arkansas had a negative reputation for the condition of our interstates. That reputation has improved significantly over the past decade, and we have the chance to continue that progress. Voting yes on November 8 will help us finish the job of rehabilitating our interstates, put thousands of Arkansans to work and save our state money in the long run. Early voting begins on Tuesday, November 1, and polls will remain open through Election Day. I hope that you will join me in voting “yes” on this critical issue and take advantage of the opportunity to have better roads in Arkansas without raising taxes.

Por todas estas razones, no

es de extrañar que esta propuesta cuenta con el respaldo bipartidista generalizada. El dinero va a financiar los proyectos de mantenimiento de todo el estado, por lo que todos se beneficiarán. Mientras que los impuestos no aumentarán si este bono es aprobado, tampoco bajarán si los votantes rechazan la propuesta.

No hace tanto tiempo que Arkansas tenía una mala reputación por la condición de nuestras carreteras interestatales. Esa reputación ha mejorado significativamente en la última

década y tenemos la oportunidad de mantener ese progreso. Votando si el 8 de Noviembre nos ayudará a terminar el proyecto de rehabilitación de nuestras carreteras, pondrá miles de Arkansanos a trabajar y le ahorrará dinero a nuestro estado a largo plazo.
