Thursday10:00am‐12:00pm350U.C.Tuesday10:00‐11:30am(346U.C.)CourseDescriptionThisseminarisahistoriographicinquiryintothefieldsofculturalhistoryandhistoricalculturalstudies.Assuchitwillexamineanumberoftheoreticalapproachesanddebatesthathaveinformedtheso‐calledculturalturnamongsthistorians.Ofparticularimportancewillbesocialandcriticaltheory;therelationshipbetweencultureandhistoricalmaterialism;raceandracialization;sexualityandgender;conceptionsofmodernity;colonialismandimperialism,amongothers.Studentswillbeexpectedtoworkthroughparticulartheoristsandschoolsofthought,aswellasrelatethesetohistoricalscholarshipinformedbydiverseapproaches.EvaluationandCourseAssignmentsSeminarparticipation:35%

Allstudentsareexpectedtobeactiveparticipantsintheseminar.Thisrequires:attendingclass;completingthereadingsforeachclass;andbeingpreparedtodiscussthereadingswithclassmatesduringseminar.Studentswillalsoberequiredtoleadseminaratleastonceperterm.Thismayinclude:(a)providingthebiographicalbackgroundandhistoricalcontextualizationofthewritingsofthetheorist(s)wearediscussing;(b)introductorycommentsonthereadings.Detailswillbeprovidedinclass.

WrittenAssignments(2perterm)FallTerm:

Assignment1:15%offinalgradeSelectamonographbyahistorianwhoseworkisinformedbyaparticulartheorist.Inapaperofapproximately6‐8pages,criticallydiscusshowthehistorianusestheparticulartheoreticalconcepts,whataspectsofthetheorist’sworkthehistorianemphasizes,towhatextentthetheoreticalframeworkfurtheredthehistoricalanalysispresentedinthemonograph.Themonographmustbeapprovedbytheinstructors.

StudentsenrolledinHIST7710willexpandtheparametersoftheaboveassignmentbyselectingatleastoneadditionalarticlebyanotherhistorianusingthesametheorist.StudentsenrolledinHIST7710areexpectedtoaddacriticalcomparativeassessmentofhowthetheoristisusedbydifferenthistorians.Thesepapersshouldbe8‐10pages.DueDate:October30,2013Assignment2:15%offinalgradeHIST4310:Mini‐reviewofaparticularculturaltheoristorculturalhistorian.Thereviewwillexplainthemainideasofthetheorist,historicizetheideas,anddiscusstheimpactofthetheoristinthefieldsofculturalstudiesandhistory.Ifstudentschoose,thesereviewswillbecompiledtoproduceaCulturalTheorymagazine.HIST7710:Inconsultationwiththeinstructors,graduatestudentswillpreparethetheoreticaloranalyticsegmentofaproposalinwhichthehistoricalproblem,theoreticalframework,andpotentialimpactoftheresearchisclearlyoutlined.DueDate:December4,2013

WinterTerm

Assignment3:15%offinalgradeCulturalanalysisofaspecificeventoraspectofvisualpopularculture.Thepaperwillbeapproximately6‐8pagesforstudentsenrolledinHIST4310and8‐10pagesforstudentsenrolledinHIST7710.Studentsareexpectedtoapplyrelevanttheoreticalconceptstospecifichistoricalcasesandsources.Topicandsourcesmustbeapprovedbytheinstructors.DueDate:February5,2014Assignment4:20%offinalgradeFinaltermpaper(12‐15pagesforstudentsenrolledinHIST4310;14‐18pagesforstudentsenrolledinHIST7710).StudentswillexaminetherelationshipbetweenaparticulartheoristandhowithasbeentakenupinHistoryandCulturalStudies.Forinstance,studentsmightexaminethewritingsofAdornoonmusicanddiscusshowtheseideasarecurrentlyused/debatedinthefield;orstudentsmightfocusonFoucaultandhowhehasshapedhistoriographyonincarcerationandprisonlife.Topicstobeapprovedbythecourseinstructors.DueDate:April2,2014
