It’s time to see where the next generation of football players can take Oneonta High.

OHS fi nished 4-5 last season but earned big victories over Chenango Forks and rival Norwich. The Yellowjackets have lost some key parts, how-ever, in Daily Star Player of the Year Brendan Pid-geon and First Team All-Stars Jon Lancto (offen-sive line), Dalton Smith (defensive line) and Matt Marcewicz (defensive back).

Daily Star second-teamers Ian Kelley (de-fensive line) and Phil Wright (linebacker) also are gone.

Pidgeon, a two-way starter who served as Oneonta’s go-to running back, rushed for 936 yards and 12 touchdowns on 161 carries in 2008. Now play-ing at the University of Rochester, Pidgeon also formed a hard-hitting tan-dem with Wright at line-backer last season and led OHS with 115 tackles.

The big names may be history, but fourth-year OHS coach Adam Hoover said this year’s squad might be more well-rounded than last year’s team. That’s because the majority of this group has been in his system from the start.

“It’s rare to get a guy with the size, speed and athleticism with what Brendan brought to the table last year,” Hoover said. “(The other backs) don’t have all the parts he had, but put them to-gether and they stack up pretty well.”

The line is crucial here, though, because those backs will need enough time to get things

going on offense. The same holds true for senior quarterback Dan Broe (5-foot-11, 151 pounds), who completed 30 of 86 passes for 508 yards and three touchdowns last year.

Broe, who was inter-cepted nine times in 2008, will have his top target back this season. Senior Kasey Hogan (6-4, 163) caught six passes for 167 yards last year, but he may have more chances this time around as Hoover

said the Jackets plan to go to the air a little more.

“We think (Broe) can add a little to our offense, not only with his arm but with his ability to run,” Hoover said. “We think we can get some guys the ball out in space. We think we can cause some problems for teams.

“We want to throw more,” he continued. “We have three guys, who if we can get the ball to them, they can go. If we get Broe

some time, I think we can throw it around a little bit. ... Ideally, if we’re able to do it, I could see us throwing 15-20 times a game. That’s pending we can have the protection.”

Broe threw 20 times Friday night but complet-ed six for 95 yards in a 28-0 loss to visiting Maine-Endwell that opened the Section Four Football Conference season for both teams. The offensive line had an up-and-down

night as Broe had lots of time or hardly any at all to throw.

“They did a good job pressuring us, but we also made some mental mistakes on the protec-tion where we were slid-ing and one guy forgot,” Hoover said. “He noticed it right away, but by the time you take your step, it’s too late. We also had some passes I think we’ll normally catch.”

Oneonta has some time

to get ready for its Divi-sion III schedule, which features Chenango Val-ley, Norwich, Susquehan-na Valley and Windsor.

And last year’s wins over perennial power Chenango Forks and longtime rival Norwich only improved the team’s outlook for 2009, Hoover said.

“It gives us confi dence, but at the same time, we have to know we have

Continued from Page 2to work hard,” Hoover said. “Those wins didn’t come easy and we have to be prepared to work to get those types of wins. That showed us we can compete with anybody out there, which is a good thing.

“The step we have to take is we have to play the full 48 min-utes,” he said. “Last year we played well for a half or three quarters, and once for even 46 minutes. We have to play all of them. ... We’ve been talking about fi nishing games. If we do that, it’s not a stretch to see us in the playoffs. If we don’t do that, we could have not-so-good of a year.”

Division play begins in Week Four for the Jackets, which gives their offensive line time to mature.

Senior David Schulte (6-2, 189), a Daily Star second-teamer last year, anchors the offensive line at right guard. Jesse Wolf-Gould (6-5, 275), who started at tackle last year, takes over at center and senior Pat Jeffries (5-10, 164) will be at left guard.

Senior Buddy Bemis (6-2, 232) and senior Derek Wright (6-1, 191) are battling for the left-tackle spot, but senior Kenny Smith (5-10, 241) seems to have right tackle all to himself.

Senior halfbacks Doug DiMartin (5-10, 153) and Cory Hunter (6-0, 169) will start in the backfi eld, and senior Jus-tin Borggreen (5-9, 170) and ju-nior Logan Pondolfi no (5-9, 152) should see plenty of time at halfback.

Sophomore Bryce Wooden (6-2, 196), senior Ian Clemons (5-9, 144) and junior Zach Vaccaro (5-8, 183) are also options to run the ball.

Junior Michael Gilmore (6-4, 194), who caught three passes for 71 yards last season, also is back and will join Hogan as a tight end. Hoover said sopho-more Anthony Delgado (6-0, 175) also will see time as a tight end.

“They can catch and if they can get in space, they can run pretty well,” Hoover said.

Wooden and Delgado will take over for Pidgeon and Wright at inside linebacker, where junior Dan Hodne (6-0,

206) will be in the mix.“We don’t have that leader-

ship at linebacker,” Hoover said. “But we have guys who are confi dent. ... They are a little tentative when it comes to mak-ing defensive calls. That will come with experience. They’ll gain the confi dence.”

Schulte, Borggreen and

Jeffries will be at either end. Hoover said he’s hoping to ro-tate the three in the two de-fensive end spots to keep them fresh.

Junior Dakota Smith (6-1, 195) will be at left tackle. Se-nior Thomas Neapolitano (6-1, 206), Vaccaro and junior Dave Johnson (5-11, 256) could all see

time at right tackle. Oneonta’s outside lineback-

ers will be Gilmore and Hunter. DiMartin and Pondolfi no will play cornerback, with Clemons also seeing time. Hogan is at safety.

“Defensively, we have ex-perience all around except the two middle linebackers,”

Hoover said. “If those guys play the way they can and take care of their responsibilities, they’ll do a nice job. There will proba-bly be some growing pains, but you’ll have that.”

9 6 BAINBRIDGE-GUILFORD BOBCATS

By P.J. HarmerStaff Writer

Justin Pepper’s job got a little bigger this year for Bain-bridge-Guilford.

A senior quarterback, Pep-per will be in the backfi eld with some new faces as speedy running back Dustin Ross and fullback Brad Hurlburt _ both Daily Star First Team All-Stars last year _ have graduated.

But Pepper seems to have entered the season ready to ac-cept the challenge, fourth-year B-G coach Tim Mattingly said. Pepper, who stands at 6-foot-2, came into practice this year at 205 pounds. Mattingly said that’s 15 pounds heavier than last season.

“He runs the show on of-fense, and on defense, he’s our middle linebacker,” Mattingly said of Pepper, who earned Daily Star second-team honors for his defense last season. “He has shown great leadership and he’s the main cog in our ma-chine. We need him to be suc-cessful. ... He’s a stud.”

The Bobcats, 5-4 a season ago, are looking to build off the suc-cess of a Section Four Football Conference Class D playoff ap-pearance. The semifi nal berth didn’t go too well, however, as

B-G was on the losing end of a 38-0 thumping by eventual state semifi nalist Walton.

Still, reaching the postsea-son had positive effects on the team.

“Our goal is to get to the play-offs,” Mattingly said. “I think they got a taste of it last year and they want to get back again this year. We’ve had two great weeks of practice. I’ve been happy with the leader-ship.”

Reaching the playoffs won’t be a given for B-G, which is in Division VII with Delhi, De-posit, Hancock, Harpursville, Oxford and Seton Catholic Cen-tral.

“Delhi is the team to beat with what they have returning,” Mattingly said. “But Oxford is better and Hancock is better. I think it will be a pretty com-petitive division.”

Mattingly’s fi rst concern has to start with his backfi eld.

Ross, whose breakaway speed was unmatched by most in the area, fi nished with 1,012 yards rushing. Hurlburt, a hard-hitting full-back, had 499 yards. Pepper also rushed for 276 yards.

All together, then, the three combined for 1,787 of B-G’s 1,849 rushing yards.

Pepper will be expected to carry a bunch of the offensive load, but running backs Jake Taylor (senior) and Dakota Vandermark (junior) also have looked good early on, Mattingly said. Sophomore Billy Holden (6-2, 230) will take over at fullback.

Mattingly said even without the experience, he likes the look of this year’s team.

“We have to get them accli-mated to the varsity level and get them to come together,”

he said. “If we have them fi ll the holes we need and we can jell, I think we can be a pretty good football team this year. Of course, we have to stay injury free. We have more depth than in the past, but we can’t have any major (inju-ries).”

Pepper, who completed 21 of 61 passes for 467 yards and four touchdowns last year _ he was in-tercepted eight times _ has his top target back in senior fl anker James Banta (10 catches, 312 yards).

But for Pepper to have suc-cess, the line has to come to-gether, Mattingly said.

Senior guards Ethan Maz-zarella (5-9, 190), a Daily Star second-teamer last year, and Russell Darling (6-0, 150) will anchor a line that includes junior center Jimmy Wells (6-2, 165), junior left tackle Eric Oefelein (6-1, 230), senior right

tackle Jordan Boudreau (6-2, 260) and freshman tight end Austin Bauerle (6-1, 170).

Sophomore split end Ryan Porter (6-4, 190) fi lls out the of-fense.

“We had some holes to fi ll on the offensive line and we feel we have some good kids in there,” Mattingly said. “We’re fi lling holes with some young kids. Overall, I think we have some pretty good athletes.”

Mazzarella will lead the de-fense as well as the starter at nose guard. Darling will be at right end and junior Robert Ire-land (5-11, 180) will be at right tackle. Holden is at left tackle and Taylor is at left end.

Pepper and junior Danny Gormley (5-6, 140), a three-time Section Four Division II wres-tling champion, will be the in-side linebackers.

Junior Gordie Shields (5-8, 140) and senior Brandon Har-rington (5-4, 130) will be the cor-nerbacks and Banta and Van-dermark will be the safeties.

“We have some athletes who have come out this year that haven’t played in a couple of years,” Mattingly said.

“That’s boosted our program a little,” he continued. “This group I have seems to be more athletic than what I’ve had in the past. It’s a nice group of kids.”

9 8 COOPERSTOWN REDSKINS

By Eric AhlqvistCooperstown Crier

Are you ready for some foot-ball? The Cooperstown football team seemed to be Friday night, when it opened the season with a 13-0 victory at Section Three rival Ilion.

“I wish we were starting with a non-league game, but we’re not, so we’re going to have to be sharp and ready right from the start,” Cooperstown coach Steve Pug-liese said before Friday’s game, which marked the Redskins sec-ond straight shutout against Il-ion (20-0 in 2008). “Ilion is a tal-ented offensive football team and they’ve got some big kids. It will be a good football game.”

It was for the Redskins, who got 1-yard touch-down runs from quarterback Ty-ler Hoke and fel-low senior Tanner N i e d z i a l k o w s k i in the second and third quarters, re-spectively. Those two are part of a core of veterans who are playing together for the third straight season.

Hoke led the Redskins to a 5-3 record last season, when he com-pleted 31 passes for 606 yards and 11 touchdowns. Pugliese said Hoke, who went 0-for-3 Friday but had 88 rushing yards, may look to pass a lot to fi rst-year player Jere-miah Ford throughout the season.

Niedzialkowski and junior Alec Silvera each rushed for more than 100 yards in the open-er. Niedzialkowski fi nished with a team-high 131 yards on 18 car-ries and track standout Silvera had 127 on 10 carries. Chad Par-shall contributed 9 yards on two rushes, helping the Redskins to 355 ground yards Friday.

Niedzialkowski also led Coo-perstown’s defense, with 14 tack-les and an interception. Teammate Chris Wehner fi nished with 11 tackles and recovered a fumble.

“Tanner may be my best overall player,” Pugliese said of Niedzi-alkowki, who starts at linebacker

and fi nished second on the team in tackles last season with 99.

Pugliese also said running back Luke Folts should have an impact this season, although he had no offensive or defensive sta-tistics Friday.

“He’s back and better than ever,” Pugliese said of Folts, who returns after an injury-riddled sophomore year that included a broken leg. “He loves the game and he plays hard all the time. He’ll be a big addition.”

Linemen Chris Michaels, Ed-die O’Brien and Jed Rowley also are back.

“Offensively, I think we’ll be fi ne, but we have to have some of the new guys step up on the de-fensive side of the ball,” Pugliese said. “I think we have the players who can do it.”

Cooperstown will play in the Class C East Division of the re-aligned Section Three Confer-ence. Its division foes this year are Ilion, Holland Patent, Frank-fort-Schuyler and Herkimer.

“We might have the best league in all of Class C,” Pugliese said. “Every team _ with the possible exception of Frankfort _ has the potential to win it. My primary focus is winning the league. If we go to sectionals, that would just be gravy.’’

Cooperstown hosts Little Falls at 2 p.m. Saturday, then travels to Richfi eld Springs to play Mohawk on Sept. 19. The Redskins follow with a game at Holland Patent on Sept. 25 before closing their regu-lar season with back-to-back home games _ at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 against F-S (homecoming) and home against Herkimer at 2 p.m. Oct. 10.

‘My primary fo-cus is winning the league. If we go to sectionals, that would just be gravy.’

— Cooperstown coach Steve Pugliese

9 10 DELHI BULLDOGS

By P.J. HarmerStaff Writer

Though some are pointing fi n-gers at Delhi as one of the favor-ites among Class D teams in the Section Four Football Confer-ence, coach Dave Kelly said he wasn’t ready to start planning a trip to the sectional fi nal.

The Bulldogs fi nished 5-4 and won Division VIII last sea-son, reaching the Section Four Class D semifi nals before fall-ing, 33-14, to Groton.

Delhi has been placed in the new-look Division VII with Bainbridge-Guilford, Deposit, Hancock, Harpursville, Oxford and Seton Catholic Central. Each team in the division seems to have key losses, but each also has decent returning players.

“I think you’re going to see a very competitive group,” Kelly said. “I can’t designate anybody as a bottom-feeder.

“I think we’re in contention,” he continued. “We have basi-cally 11 kids back who started at one time or another. We just have to make sure we can put 11 on the fi eld who can do the job.”

Section Four’s Division VIII _ the other division in Class D _ consists of Candor, Groton, Moravia, Newfi eld, Odessa-Montour, Spencer-Van Etten, Thomas A. Edison and Tioga.

The Bulldogs have their share of big losses in Daily Star First Team All-Stars Luke Burns (quarterback/defensive back) and offensive lineman Chris Skovira. Second-teamer Davionne Price (defensive back) also graduated.

Burns completed 47 of 98 passes for 674 yards, seven touchdowns and fi ve intercep-tions last season. He ranked second in the area in passing yards (Sidney’s Dylan Umbra was fi rst with 685).

Junior Anthony Salerno (5-foot-7, 140 pounds), who saw some time at quarterback last year, will take over for Burns.

“You have to look at differ-ent people’s strengths,” Kelly said. “Anthony is very quick and is hard to get a hold of. Ob-viously he won’t see as much as

Luke (who is 6-2). We feel he can do some other things. We might be able to run the option a little better because he’s quick. Each one has a strength.”

Kelly said one of his early-season concerns is getting the offensive line to continually improve.

“We have to become a lot more aggressive on our offen-sive line,” said Kelly, whose team opened with a 16-0 victory over Liberty. “We were just a

little bit soft the other day (dur-ing a scrimmage with Chenango Forks, Vestal and Oxford). We had a very hard time moving the ball on Chenango Forks.”

Senior right tackle Marty Cole (6-2, 295) anchors an of-fensive line that also includes senior right guard Nick Shaw (5-11, 200). Juniors Mike Thom-as (5-7, 225) or Will Effner (6-3, 270) will be at center and senior Kurt Beall (6-1, 190) will play left guard.

Thomas or junior Jacob Sackett (6-1, 190) will play at left tackle and junior Jacob Haynes (6-2, 190) and senior Zach Newkerk (6-3, 185) will be at tight end. When Delhi uses a wide receiver, it likely will be senior Tyler McAteer (5-9, 140).

Joining Salerno in the back-fi eld is senior running back J.J. Darling (5-10, 160) and junior fullback Jack Fletcher (5-11, 210). Senior Rich Ennist, who rushed for 119 yards and two

touchdowns against Liberty, will also get carries.

Fletcher was a Daily Star First Team All-Star last season, when he rushed for 988 yards and 14 touchdowns on 161 car-ries. Darling had 249 yards on 45 carries.

Kelly said Delhi’s rushing could be strong, depending on how the line comes together.

“If you can’t stop the oth-er team on the pass rush you aren’t going to move the ball on the ground,” Kelly said. “It’s a team effort. You are as good as your weakest link.”

Defensively, the Bulldogs should be equally strong.

Cole is at nose guard and Ennist (6-1, 215), a Daily Star second-teamer last year, is at left end. Sackett is at right end and Newkerk and senior Shawn Neumann (5-9, 150) will be at outside linebacker. The inside linebackers are Fletcher and junior Mike Thomas (5-7, 225).

Senior Garrett Ellis (5-8, 130) is back at cornerback and will be joined by senior Chris Payne (5-10, 155). Darling returns at safe-ty, where junior Kevin O’Connell (6-1, 140) also will play.

“The way it’s evolved, there were a lot of question marks early,” Kelly said. “At this time, they seemed to have sorted themselves out.”

Kelly, in his 44th season and ranked second in Section Four victories behind Walton’s Jim Hoover, said running the ball will be key this season.

“We have to run the ball like we do when we’re good,” he said. “If we have ideas about winning our division, and we do, we have to pick it up a little bit in terms of our offensive-line play.”

Depth also should be a plus for the Bulldogs.

“It depends on the position,” Kelly said. “We do have some depth, but not all across the board. ... Injuries at about half of the positions will create a problem. Injuries at the other half won’t be so drastic.”

With 18 of 27 players back from last season’s 5-4 squad, including a third-year starting quarterback, it would appear Sidney’s football team has the makings for something special in 2009.

It won’t take the Warriors long to fi nd out if that’s the case.

Sidney is sure to know where it falls in the Division V peck-ing order of the Section Four Football Conference over the next two weeks.

They’re home against Wal-ton on Friday and travel to Chenango Forks the following Saturday.

That’s the same Walton pro-gram that has won two Sec-tion Four Class C titles (2000, 2004), two Section Four Class D championships (2007, 2008) and a Class D state championship (2007) this decade.

Over the same period, Chenango Forks has seven Sec-tion Four Class B titles to its credit, including state champi-onships in 2003 and 2004.

Sure, Sidney has had some recent success as well, win-ning back-to-back Section Four Class C titles in 2005 and 2006, the former resulting in a state championship.

But since going 21-3 in those seasons, the Warriors are 8-10 over the last two campaigns.

Though it would seem the Warriors might put a better product on the fi eld this sea-son, it’s probably a stretch to

say they’re in the same league as Walton and Forks.

“Everybody has a tough league schedule,” Sidney coach Jeff Matthews said. “Nobody can complain. Everybody is in the same boat. Every year is a new opportunity to see where you’re at. We would like to be competitive in every game we play.”

Last season, Walton placed a 66-7 hurting on Sidney.

“Walton has always been the measuring stick,” Matthews said of a team that opened with a 20-19 victory over Wind-sor on Saturday. “It’s good to get a chance to play them in a meaningful game. Last year, we got beat up pretty good, but we always look forward to playing a well-coached team like Wal-ton.”

Talk of this year’s edition of the Warriors has to start with junior quarterback Dylan Um-bra. Last season, he completed 42 of 100 passes for 685 yards and seven touchdowns. He also earned Daily Star First Team

All-Star honors as a defensive back.

“He understands the offense and what we’re trying to do,” Matthews said of the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Umbra. “If I send in the wrong formation, he can de-cipher it and get the right play called. When he was a freshman and that hap-pened, we were just in a bad play. It’s nice to have a coach right on the fi eld for us.”

Will Umbra’s e x p e r i e n c e translate into more passing this season?

“We’ll see,” Matthews said. “Having a good quarterback re-ally helps, but what really dic-tates that are the people who’ll catch it. We have some kids with really good hands, but it comes down to situations.”

In Sidney’s 20-14 Week 1 victory over Bainbridge-Guil-ford, Umbra went 3-for-8 for 29 yards.

But with Aaron Wood run-ning for 125 yards and a pair of scores on 20 carries last Fri-day, the Warriors didn’t need

to throw much. Wood, a senior, gained 470 yards and scored seven TDs on the ground last season _ numbers second on the team to Mike Guerriere, who graduated after gaining 864 yards and scoring 11 touch-downs a year ago en route to third-team all-state honors. Wood, a Second Team Daily Star All-Star in 2008, also caught a team-high 12 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns.

“I’m looking forward to big things out of Aaron,” Matthews said.

Seniors Andy Searles (14 carries for 71 yards last sea-son) and Tyler Moffi tt (26-152) should also get touches in the Warriors’ double-wing attack on the opposite side of Wood, as will juniors Corbin Curley and Anthony Masi.

The fullback is senior Nick Burpoe.

All of Sidney’s linemen played last season.

Senior Pat Wright (5-9, 270) is the center. He’ll be fl anked closely _ Sidney’s linemen

traditionally have the tightest splits in the section _ by left guard Brian Robertson (5-9, 190) and Tyler Pixley (5-11, 200) or Matt Rodriguez (5-11, 180) at right guard.

The right tackle is third-year starter Kyle Baldwin (6-2, 260) and Tom Harris (6-2, 220) is the left tackle.

The ends will be Alex Heil, who had nine catches for 94 yards last season as a sophomore, and junior Tanner Westcott.

Defensively, Harris will play nose tackle, with Baldwin and Robertson as the ends.

Masi and junior Tanner Koza, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, are the outside linebackers. Heil and Burpoe will man in the inside linebacker positions.

Curley and Umbra are the safeties, and junior Josh Wilce and Searles are the corners.

“We don’t have a lot of team speed, but we have some quick-ness,” Matthews said. “If we can get an initial surge, we can have some success. We’re not real big and that concerns me when we face a team that wants to pound it.”

Added Matthews: “I think we’re going to be as good a foot-ball team as last year, if not bet-ter, but with the addition of two premier football teams from our section (Walton and Forks), improving will be a tough task. We don’t want to settle for any-thing. It’s important to have high goals.”

9 14 UNADILLA VALLEY/EDMESTON STORM

By Rob CentoraniStaff Writer

It’s not like Unadilla Valley/Edmeston was hopelessly out of every football game it played in 2008.

But the Storm did lose every game they played a year ago in making the transition from an in-dependent schedule to Division V of the Section Four Football Conference.

Five of their losses were by 16 points or fewer, including a 22-20 loss to Oxford, a 14-7 setback to Bainbridge-Guilford, and a 21-14 decision to Deposit.

“We didn’t know how to fi nish off a game (last season),” fourth-year UV/E coach Jack Loeffl er said. “We were in a position to win, but we just didn’t know how to go about it. We’d have a turn-over or a costly penalty, or some-thing like that and it would take us out of the game.”

And there’s no guarantee UV/E’s record will improve in 2009.

The Storm have a meager 20 boys on their roster and with the addition of perennial state powers Walton and Chenango Forks in Di-vision V, the schedule has become considerably more diffi cult.

“We’re calling ourselves the few but the mighty because we don’t have great numbers, but every kid that we have is a qual-ity player,” Loeffl er said before his team’s season-opening, 20-0 loss at home to Newfi eld on Fri-day. “It’s not like we have three or four weak kids where we have to worry if every kid we put in the game can do the job.”

Still, in division games against Unatego, Sidney and Greene last season, UV/E was outscored, 126-6. And now, Walton and Forks are on the schedule.

“(Our schedule) is (a bear), especially after what we went through last year, but we’ve come up with the philosophy that you only get better by playing better teams and we have the mind-set right now that we don’t care who we’re playing,” Loeffl er said. “We’re going to bring everything we’ve got.

“Wins and losses aren’t as important as how much we de-

velop,” he continued. “Of course, we want the wins, but right now we’re just trying to build a pro-gram here.”

Perhaps the key returner is senior quarterback Ryan Har-rington, who stepped in as the starter in the fourth game last sea-son and completed 13 of 47 passes for 235 yards, with two touchdowns and fi ve interceptions.

“That’s absolutely essential,” Loeffl er said of Harrington’s experience, “because we have enough young guys and I tell him he doesn’t just have to know one position, he has to know all 11 of them to make sure everyone is position on every play.”

Senior running back Ian Davis exceeded his offensive output from a year ago in the opener, rushing for a game-high 138 yards on 16 carries against Newfi eld. Davis had 83 yards on 24 carries in 2008.

Also returning in the back-fi eld is Tyler Foulds, a 6-foot-3, 250-pounder who gained 115 yards on 30 rushes last season. Foulds rushed for 52 yards on 10 attempts against Newfi eld.

Senior John Lopez, and ju-niors Brett Gage, Eli Conklin, Derek Collins, Dan Schwab, Matt Gould and David Wehrenberg, also should get carries.

The all-underclassmen offen-sive line features juniors Mitch MacDuff (6-4, 208), Randy Olsen (6-2, 222), Calvin Rifanberg (6-0, 210) and Will Westbrook (5-10, 232), along with sophomore Jason Rous (5-11, 242).

The starting tight end is junior Travis Clark (6-0, 175).

Defensively, Rous plays at nose tackle and is fl anked by Rifanberg and senior Tom Fell-rath. Clark and Conklin man the end positions, with Foulds and Westbrook at inside linebacker.

Gage and Davis are the cor-ners, and Lopez and Collins are the safeties.

Juniors Evin Bodie (6-0, 183) and Jake Eiholzer (6-1, 260) pro-vide depth on the lines, as does junior Austin Glidden in the backfi eld.

9 16 UNATEGO SPARTANS

By Courtney A. EricksonContributing Writer

If Unatego football intends to win its second Section Four Class C title in the past three seasons, it will do so with a mostly new cast of players.

In his third year as head coach, Art Rigas needs to replace 17 starters from a team that fi nished 5-4 overall and 1-2 in Division V last season.

“Our challenge is inexperience,” former Oneonta High coach Rigas said. “We have a lot of players who have nev-er played varsity football and we have athletic kids. They have performed ev-erything we’ve asked of them.”

Senior quarterback Cody Komenda will take over for 2009 graduate Cody Renwick, who completed 43 of 96 passes for 688 yards and six touchdowns last season.

“He is a great athlete who has tak-en command of the offense and knows where everyone is supposed to be,” Rigas said of the 5-foot-11, 150-pound Komenda. “He is ahead of where we ex-pected him to be. He has been a pleas-ant surprise.”

Unatego’s backfi eld will consist of re-turner Evan Kiss, a senior fullback, and halfbacks Conner Miller, Jacob Jones and Josh Lambrecht. Kiss had 631 yards and fi ve TDs on 92 carries last season.

“(Kiss) is one of the fastest guys on the team,” Rigas said. “He is reading blocks better and had fi ve or six runs of 50 or more yards last year.”

The foursome will attempt to fi ll a void left by the graduation of Tyler New-man, who had 588 yards on 94 touches last season.

“We will spread out our offense and put the ball into different hands,” Ri-gas said. “We have more depth (in the ground game) than last year.”

Unatego’s top receiver in 2008, Chet Davis, graduated after scoring four times and amassing 393 yards on 21 catches. Komenda’s top targets, then, should be senior Dale Rifenbark and newcomer David Carman, who are sophomores.

“(Rifenbark and Carman) are willing to come out and work hard every day,” Rigas said.

The offensive line has to fi nd a suit-able replacement for 2008 Daily Star First Team pick Glenn Innes. Juniors Travis Carr, Dylan Joyce and Dylan Bar-ber will try to pick up the void left by Innes.

“(Innes) was our leader,” Rigas said of the three-year starter. “Carr, Joyce and Barber earned starting spots early.”

The defensive line took a big hit with the graduations of Davis and Kyle Ray, an all-state and Daily Star fi rst-team se-lection. Rifenbark and Kiss will line up at defensive end, and junior Jerry Pac-chiano will play nose guard.

Joyce, who earned a starting spot by the end of last season, and Miller are the team’s top linebackers.

“(Miller) is a pretty well-rounded player,” Rigas said of the sophomore. “He runs around and loves the game.”

The secondary features newcomers in junior safeties Will May and Ryan Thompson, with Carman and Komenda starting at cornerback. May also will handle all of the kicking duties.

“(May) has never played football be-fore but is a really smart kid,” Rigas said. “He is booming the ball and is a really pleasant surprise.”

After scoring six points in last sea-son’s fi rst two games _ against Oneonta and eventual Class D state semifi nalist Walton _ Unatego doesn’t appear to have it much easier at the beginning of this fall.

The Spartans opened Saturday with an 8-7 loss at Harpursville and are head-ed to perennial Section Four power Chenango Forks this Saturday.

Rigas said he’s counting on preseason work ethic to get the team through the diffi cult opening stretch.

“I think we have good leadership,” Rigas said. “They are leading by exam-ple and working hard every day. We’re having fun out there.”

9 18 WALTON WARRIORS

By P.J. HarmerStaff Writer

Walton coach Jim Hoover is going to have to dust off some of his old scouting tapes.

Hoover’s Warriors, who won their second straight Section Four Class D championship last season, have moved up to Class C this season and will get reacquainted with some old but familiar faces.

The Warriors, who fi nished 11-1 last season, are in Division V of the Section Four Football Conference, which is arguably the toughest in the section this year. Besides Walton, the divi-sion also features Chenango Forks, Greene, Sidney, Unadil-la Valley/Edmeston, Unatego and Whitney Point.

“It’s just unbelievable the teams that are there,” said Hoover, whose team opened with a 20-19 victory over Class B power Windsor. “You are going to have a couple of teams sitting around and not going any place. Every league game is important. Then the non-league games are, too. If it comes to a tiebreaker, those are important.”

Here’s a brief look at just how tough this division will be:

Walton won the Class D state title two seasons ago and reached the state semifi nals last year;

Chenango Forks won seven straight Section Four Class B titles before falling in the semi-fi nals to eventual champion Waverly last year;

Unatego won the Class C sectional title two years ago;

Sidney reached the Class C playoffs last year;

Greene lost in the Class C sectional fi nal to Elmira Notre Dame last season.

“My memory isn’t as good as it used to be, but it has to be one of the best divisions,” said Hoover, the section’s all-time winningest coach at 266-62-1. “I could be forgetting some other year, but it’s a tough division, no doubt about it. The fi rst fi ve games we play are against teams that were in the playoffs last year.

“Our two non-league games (against Windsor and rival Del-hi) are against two top-notch football teams,” he continued. “It’s going to be tough.”

The schedule isn’t even the biggest concern for Hoover, who needs to work on replac-ing a slew of All-Stars from last year’s team. At the top of that list are four Daily Star First Team All-Stars in defensive lineman Chris Mead, lineback-er/running back Cody Reed, offensive lineman Kenny Reyn-olds and quarterback/defensive back Chad Gardepe.

“We have the same problem every year,” Hoover said. “It’s very seldom we have a lot of kids back. We’re usually senior-oriented. The underclassmen worked against them the year before. It’s nothing different.

... You try and get better every day.”

But Walton isn’t replacing everybody.

Daily Star First Team run-ning backs Phil Hanley and Bry-ant Mead return, as well as cen-ter Austin Boice, who is shifting to left guard this season.

Senior Hanley (5-foot-9, 171 pounds) led the Warriors with 1,278 yards and 21 touchdowns on 121 carries in 2008, when classmate Mead (6-1, 180) had 791 yards and 14 touchdowns on 83 carries.

Senior Evan Boyd (6-1, 190) also returns after rushing for 303 yards and four touchdowns on 53 carries. He’ll start at fullback.

“We have good kids coming back,” Hoover said. “It’s nice to have (Hanley and Mead) back. They seem quicker than

last year. We’ll have to get the ball in their hands an awful lot. We have to have some offen-sive linemen who can open the holes. You can have the best backs in the world, but if you don’t have the blockers, it’s go-ing to be a long year.”

Should the younger group on the line come together early and open the ground game, Walton could throw a kink into its tra-ditional run-heavy offense. Se-nior quarterback Dan Gehl (6-5, 192) might have the opportunity to pass a little this year, though Hoover said he wouldn’t prom-ise more passing than usual.

“He throws well,” Hoover said. “For a 6-5 guy, he’s quicker than you think he is. He’s doing a great job for us. He has a few kids who can catch the ball this year. If we have to throw, we’re

capable of throwing.”Senior Jim MacDonald (5-11,

160), who rushed for 163 yards on 24 carries last year, also will see time in the backfi eld.

Sophomore Justin DiJiulio (6-2, 250) takes over at center and will be joined on the line by Boice (left guard), senior right guard Travis Rathmell (6-1, 214), senior right tackle Der-rick Cetta (5-11, 229), junior left tackle Dan Bowker (6-2, 273) and senior tight ends Phil Glad-stone (6-4, 202) and Steve Ka-minsky (6-2, 190). When Walton opts to use split ends, senior Kyle Baxley (5-10, 142) or senior Justin Gardepe (6-1, 155) will see time there.

For the Warriors to be suc-cessful, Hoover said, the line must get its act together.

“We’re very inconsistent,” he said. “In our scrimmage (Aug. 29), we looked OK for a while, then we stunk up the place for a while. The key is getting more consistent and getting stronger, technique-wise. Right now, I don’t know if (the line) will be a strength or a weakness. I think we’ll be able to score points, but again, we’re fi ghting the consistency part of it.”

Defensively, Hoover said, the Warriors have several players who can work as tack-les and ends, including Boice, Rathmell, Bowker, Cetta, junior Dylan Hornbeck (6-2, 180), DiJi-ulio and junior Patrick Smith (5-8, 260).

Mead and Justin Gardepe will be at the cornerback spots, along with Kaminsky on occa-sion. Boyd and junior Chris Calabrese (6-1, 168) are the linebackers. Hanley, MacDon-ald and Baxter are the main defensive halfbacks, along with Gehl.

“Some of our inexperienced kids haven’t been tested as starters,” Hoover said. “It’s how we’re going to perform under pressure. For a lot of years, our kids step up under pressure and hopefully, that will continue.”
