A Reflection

EXSULTET: THE EASTER PROCLAMATION

Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven, exult, let Angel ministers of God exult,

let the trumpet of salvation sound aloud our mighty King’s triumph!

Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her, ablaze with light from her eternal King,

let all corners of the earth be glad, knowing an end to gloom and darkness.

Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice, arrayed with the lighting of his glory, let this

holy building shake with joy, filled with the mighty voices of the peoples.

Therefore, dearest friends, standing in the awesome glory of this holy light, invoke

with me, I ask you, the mercy of God almighty, that he who has been pleased to

number me, though unworthy, among the Levites, may pour into me his light

unshadowed, that I may sing this candle’s perfect praises.

It is truly right and just, with ardent love of mind and heart, and with devoted

service of our voice, to acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father, and Jesus

Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten. Who for our sake paid Adam’s debt to

the eternal Father, and pouring out his own dear Blood wiped clean the record of

our ancient sinfulness.

These then are the feasts of Passover, in which is slain the Lamb, the one true Lamb,

whose Blood anoints the doorposts of believers.

This is the night, when once you led our forebears, Israel’s children, from slavery in

Egypt and made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea.

This is the night that with a pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin.

This is the night that even now, throughout the world, sets Christian believers apart

from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin, lending them to grace, and joining

them to his holy ones.

This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death, and rose victorious

from the underworld. Our birth would have been no gain, had we not been redeemed.

HIGH MASS | 5

O wonder of your humble care for us! O love, O charity beyond all telling, to ransom

a slave you gave away your Son! O truly necessary sin of Adam, destroyed

completely by the Death of Christ!

O happy fault that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!

O truly blessed night, worthy alone to know the time and hour when Christ rose

from the underworld!

This is the night of which it is written: The night shall be as bright as day, dazzling is

the night for me, and full of gladness.

The sanctifying power of this night dispels all wickedness, washes faults away,

restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners, drives out hatred, fosters

concord, and brings down the mighty.

On this, your night of grace, O holy Father, accept this candle, a solemn offering, the

work of bees and of your servants’ hands, an evening sacrifice of praise, this gift from

your most holy Church.

But now we know the praises of this pillar, which glowing fire ignites for God’s

honor, a fire into many flames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light, for

it is fed by melting wax, drawn out by mother bees to build a torch so precious.

O truly blessed night, when things of heaven are wed to those of earth, and divine to the

human.

Therefore, O Lord, we pray you that this candle, hallowed to the honor of your name,

may persevere undimmed, to overcome the darkness of this night.

Receive it as a pleasing fragrance, and let it mingle with the lights of heaven.

May this flame be found still burning by the Morning Star: the one Morning Star who

never sets, Christ your Son, who coming back from death’s domain has shed his

peaceful light on humanity and lives and reigns for ever and ever.

The Liturgy of the Word

FIRST READING Be seated

Reader A reading from the Book of Acts.

Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in

every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You

know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ - he is

Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the

baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit

and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by

the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in

Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the

third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by

God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He

commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God

as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who

believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Acts 10: 34-43

Reader The word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

PSALM A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his mercy endures for ever.

Let Israel now proclaim, "His mercy endures for ever." Antiphon

I will give thanks to you, for you answered me and have become my salvation.

The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. Antiphon

Psalm 118: 1-2, 21-23

EPISTLE READING

Sub-deacon A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in

fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For

since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come

through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. But

each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to

Christ. Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after

he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For he must reign until he

has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

1 Corinthians 15:19-26

THE HOLY GOSPEL All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb

and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Pe-

ter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the

Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Then Peter and the

other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the

other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the

linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him,

and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been

on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the

other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet

they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples

returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent

over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus

had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are

you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where

they have laid him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,

but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?

Whom are you looking for?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you

have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away." Jesus said

to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means Teacher).

Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But

go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my god

and your God.'" Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the

Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her. John 20:1-18

Jesus the risen one, in the power of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty,

that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee:

O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God:

creator and preserver of all things.

But chiefly we are bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection

of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

for he is the very Paschal Lamb, which was offered for us,

and hath taken away the sin of the world;

who by death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again

hath restored us to everlasting life.

Therefore with Angels and Archangels,

and with all the company of heaven,

we laud and magnify thy glorious name;

evermore praising thee and saying:

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Kneel

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy

tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to

suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect

sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to

continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming

again;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks

to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which

is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” +

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,

he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new

covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins:

Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with

these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath

commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious

death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again

with power and great glory.

And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word

and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be

unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ.

lllAll We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee,

Lord our God.

Choir

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and

thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and

bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may

worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled

with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church

may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the

same Jesus Christ our Lord;

By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and

glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

lllAll Amen.
