Television history began in 1928. In the 50’s the first colored television was produced along with the beginning of television shows. Since, the television has advanced and evolved on its way to the 20th century.

Throughout the history of television, there has constantly been gender stereotyping within sitcoms, movies, and even cartoons. Women are seen as ignorant, helpless, with bodies that are thin and curvy, and belonging at home. Men are always seen as intelligent, the providers, with bodies that are strong and tall, and belonging in the work force.

Even though Superman is a children’s cartoon, it is full of gender stereotyping. For one, the main character, the hero, just like most other heroes is a male. He is the savior of the town, strong and powerful, and is in a sense superior to all other beings.

Leave it to Beaver portrays the typical 50’s family. The mother has a thin waist with curves in the appropriate area, and is cooking in the kitchen at home. The boys are shirtless, which is typical for the male gender; the oldest is tall and muscular and the two boys appear to be about to go swimming, which is a sport, a masculine recreation.

I Love Lucy portrays the typical married couple according to gender expectations. For one, Ricky, the husband is driving, which shows a sign of dominance; also throughout the series, he is not only the provider but the problem solver as well. The Lucy character, as shown by the picture, is seen as an ignorant, silly girl, who always needs Ricky to save her.

Even a carefree and comical cartoon like the Flintstones has gender stereotyping. The bodies of the different genders are highly distinctive; a female has a small waist with curves and is always wearing a frilly dress and the males are huskier with a gruff look to them. The women are the ones that nurture and take care of stuff such as cleaning, while the males are always the ones involved in the adventures.

The movie Grease shows the typical male and female gender roles for the 70’s. The guys in Grease are strong, sexual, into cars, with a one track mind (girls), The females are the typical pink ladies, petite, superficial, into papering themselves, with their top priority being boys.

House Bunny, a recently produced movie, exhibits the typical supposed female of the 21st century. The girls in the photo are wearing revealing clothing, with a lot of make-up and curled hair; the typical image of an appealing female. The girls in the movie were transformed into the stereotypical girl that is a so called “airhead”, that appears to be judgmental and superficial.

Roseanne, really strays away from gender roles. Although the lead character, Roseanne, is a female, she is the ruler of the house. She is domineering and outspoken, unlike society’ s view on a females gender role.

The Disney Channel original movie, Motorcrossed, shows the change that some members of society are going through, referring to gender stereotyping. The male character of the story, who is a female wins a dirt bike race, which is specifically a male sport. The male characters in the story are very supportive of this girl crossing over the gender barrier.

The popular series, Grey’s Anatomy, is one large step away from gender stereotyping. Both the males and the females hold equal jobs in society. Not only males are seen as being respectable and intelligent, but females are as well.

The movie Hairspray exhibits gender stereotyping in many ways, but steps away from it as well. The movie has its group of stereotypical “Cool Kids” , but also has many characters that do not fit the image of a proper male or female. The main character steps away from the typical image of a girl because she is not thin, but as a catch, the most worshiped boy, likes the heavier girl.

Currently, many movies, sitcoms, shows, and cartoons are exhibiting gender stereotyping, but are also breaking away from it as well. Troy, in High School Musical, appears to be a typical male figure, that is sporty, cute, and muscular, but it is a double take because he also sings and dances in the school musical. The musical has cliques, but then goes as far and singing a song that cliques do not matter.

As shown by the picture, the Disney Channel cartoon, shows both stereotyping but then the exact opposite of it as well. Kim Possible has the typical teenage girls body and is a cheerleader by day, but then during the night time, she is a crime stopper. This is showing that even though she may fix the characteristics of the female gender, she is also a super hero, which is a males job at night.

Although television is full of gender stereotyping, shows and movies are slowly moving away from it. The hope of the future is to be free from not only gender stereotyping, but from all other gender stereotyping as well.
