    Fun Paper Crafts and Decorations for Christmas

    If you like the idea of crafting Christmas items from paper, or if you just like to embellish the paper goods

    you already have, then invest in a good paper-crafting stash of items and create any of the following to

    decorate your home for a Christmas gathering:

    Paper garlands:Using die-cut holiday motifs, cutouts, or combinations of individual letters, you

    can create your own holiday garland in just a few minutes time.

    ine up the cutouts side by side on a flat surface. !ape or connect them together with string and then

    hang them around doorways, on the front of buffet stations, across front porches, and so on.

    Cut out beautiful paper snowflakes and string them together for a one-of-a-kind garland. Use your

    own imagination, as well as current offerings at your local craft store, to piece your garland together.

    Paper ribbons: !ape paper ribbons to the edges of open shelves, around cake plates, or to gift wrap.

    !he easiest way to make paper ribbons is to cut "-to-#-inch-wide strips of paper with a paper cutter

    and then follow these instructions: $"% !rim one edge of the paper strips with decorative-edged

    scissors. $#% Use a hole punch or craft punch to cut out designs every few inches. $&% 'dhere double-

    sided tape to the back top edge of your paper ribbon, and join the edges of the lengths of ribbon

    together as needed.

    Place cards:(lace cards on your holiday table can be anything but boring. )ou can make your own

    place cards out of inde* cards or specialty paper. +ake them so that they tent fold, or insert flat place

    cards into place card holders.

    Notecards greeting cards and in!itations:If you want to make your own stationery items, decidehow detailed you want to get. o you want to cut and score your cards yourself, or do you want to

    just embellish premade blanks

    "ift tags:)ou can make gift tags from scraps of your best paper, hang tags from an office supply

    store, or use metal foil cutouts

    !o create holiday motifs, trace the outline of a cookie cutter onto paper and then cut out the design

    +aking your own Christmas cards is a great way to save money. !his simplepop-up card is a great craft

    project for older children. Using a single sheet of card and no glue at all, you can make simple but a great

    looking Christmas card.

    )ou do need to use a sharp craft knife, so make sure you supervise small children or do the cutting for them.

    Gather your materials.

    )ou need " sheet of thin white card2 pencil and eraser2 ruler2 scissors2 sharp craft knife2 cutting mat.

    Using a pencil and ruler, mark out the card.

    raw the curves freehand, trying to get them centered over the center crease.

    Score along the dotted and dashed lines with the point of a pair of

    scissors.

    3lder children should have no problem with this step, but younger kids may need some help.

    Cut all the internal cut lines with a sharp craft knife.

    !o make a cut with a sharp craft knife, place the piece of paper in the middle of a cutting mat and carefully

    cut out the shape. If you are supper accurate, the spare pieces will drop out as you pickupthe card.

    Fold the card in half and push the inner pieces toward the center as

    you do so.

    4ith the pop-up card folded closed, run a fingernail over the crease lines to make sure they5re crisp and

    sharp.

    6or a more finished look, you can glue the single-sheet surprise to another piece of card 7 being careful not

    to glue down the tree 7 to give it a backing. 6old a full sheet of card in half and use a glue stick to put thepop-up inside.

    !o achieve the &- effect, you use multiple copies of the same image. Use these copies to make layers in the

    picture and give the impression of depth. )ou can buy actual decoupage kits from your local card shop, but

    making pictures from your own source materials is more fun. ook for ine*pensive greeting cards,

    postcards, or multiple copies of your own photographs.

    for e*ample, a couple of carolers and a Christmas tree. ecide which parts of the card that you want

    &. Cut out the pieces for the different layers.

    Use scissors where you can. 6or complicated pieces bits or holes, use your sharp craft knife. )ou end

    up with a collection of bits.

    !he lower-left image is the base2 the lower-right is the second layer. !he cut-out arm and book form

    the third layer.

    ". tick the first layer of your picture into place.

    Use the double-sided sticky pads to put the pictures into place. tick the pads to the back of the new

    layer. (eel off the backing of the sticky pad and carefully apply the layer to the base card, making

    sure that it5s lined up accurately.

    )ou can also separate the layers by using blobs of thick, silicone-based glue. +ake sure you don5t

    s/uash the glue when you build up the layers. )ou need to leave the glue to dry overnight.

    #. Complete the card by adding the e*tra layer parts.

    Use the sticky pads to fi* the remaining parts into place. +ake sure they5re lined up accurately.

    6or smaller parts, you may need to cut the sticky pads into smaller pieces so that they don5t stick out

    of the sides.

    )ou can use this techni/ue to make all kinds of pictures on all sorts of scales. !ry making &- decoupage

    from your own photographs or from prints of classical paintings. !he layered effect and the shadows that the

    layers cast have a wonderful effect. )our pictures look really three-dimensional.
