would appreciate you doing so

as soon as possible and prior to

1 August. Your financial sup-

port is much appreciated and

will be used in support of Sol-

dier and Family Programs.

We have two great events com-

ing up in June with our Army

Birthday Banquet on 11 June

and Army Birthday Ceremony

on 14 June, both events to be

held at the Officers Club, St.

Francis Barracks in St.

Augustine. You will get more

details in flyers and emails in

the next several weeks.

Please continue helping us

bring in new members to our

Chapter both Individual and

Corporate Sponsors. Increased

Membership means more dol-

lars in our operating funds for

more support to Soldier, Fam-

ily programs, Veterans, and

events for our General Mem-

bership. Please bring a guest to

our Membership Dinners and

meetings. Thank-you for your

support of Your Chapter-- First

Militia Chapter.

It has

been a

busy

quarter

for our

Chapter

since our last newsletter. You

will find a lot to read about in

this issue about events, fund-

raisers in support for soldiers

and families, and also upcom-

ing events. I just returned

from the Third Region AUSA

Conference in Atlanta and am

proud to announce that our

Chapter has been named the

"Best Small Chapter" in Third

Region for the second con-

secutive year. Additionally,

First Militia Chapter was also

awarded the "Most Improved

Chapter" of the 18 Chapters in

the Region. This could not

have happened without a

strong membership base that

has exceeded the membership

goal from AUSA National for

30 consecutive months, an

outstanding and highly com-

mitted Executive Committee

Staff and our President of

Board of Advisors, BG (Ret)

Richard Capps. The Region

Awards and a number of Indi-

vidual Awards will be pre-

sented to the General Mem-

bership at our Meeting and

Dinner on 12 May 2011.

You will find information

about two fundraising events

in this issue, our recent Golf

tournament, and our ongoing

Rifle Raffle fundraiser. A

special thanks to LTC Richard

Elam and his special staff

from his office that put to-

gether a great Golf tourna-

ment that raised in excess of

$7,300 for our operating fund

for 2011-12. Thanks also to

all the Corporate sponsors and

Individual contributors who

helped make this year's tour-

nament a big financial suc-

cess. Second, our Rifle Raf-

fle fundraiser is off to a great

start with the tickets sales

coming in. Thanks to BG

(Ret) Capps for chairing this

fundraiser and getting us a

great price for the raffling of a

WWII M-1 Carbine Riffle. If

you have not bought or re-

turned your tickets yet, we

A NOTE FROM THE BOARD OF ADVISORS: BG (Ret) Richard G. Capps

- Can you believe the first quarter of 2011 is history!! The First Militia Chapter has been really busy and off to a great year. The Board wishes to thank Col. (ret) Don Workman and his most talented staff for their untiring work. The Chapter is in the mist of awarding and recognizing our JROTC students. What a rewarding experience to take part in their ceremonies and see motivated young men and women receive awards for their accomplish-ments. In addition the next month or so is a really busy time, with the 17

th annual Golf Tournament, 3

RD Region

Conference in Atlanta, GA, May 2011 General Membership meeting, the Army Birthday in June and of course our recently kickoff Rifle Raffle for a M1 Carbine, 30. Caliber. By now most members should have received the mail outs with instructions reference the raffle. This a new opportunity for the Chapter to raise additional revenue so as to increase support to our soldiers, their families and provide more scholarship assistance to those deserv-ing young men and women. The Board asks for your full support and participation. As a reminder, the First Militia Chapter is an exempt organization under section501(c)(3) of the Internal revenue Code.

We proudly announce the opening of the 2011 chapter schol-

arship program and are excited about significant changes to

award criteria. This year, rather than award to one broad cate-

gory of applicants, we will recognize two very special catego-

ries in addition to general membership. Categories now in-

clude: (1) Enlisted/Non-commissioned Officer (NCO), (2)

Combat veterans, and (3) General membership, SROTC, and

JROTC. We will award at least one scholarship to each of the

three categories, for up to a total of $4,500.

Scholarship application forms and detailed award criteria are

available on the chapter website at www.firstmilitia.org.

Applicants must meet the criteria for one or more categories,

or be sponsored by a member who qualifies for the category.

The selection board will convene the last week of July to

select the best qualified applicants. Scholarship awards will

be presented at our 11 August 2011 General Membership

Dinner Meeting at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center,

Starke, Florida. For Further information please call Lieuten-

ant Colonel Rob Keating at (904) 823-0285 or email

In years past, the 1st Militia

Chapter would get together at

local restaurants for lunch

once a quarter and fellowship.

With the high op tempo since

9/11, the Chapter was pulled

in many different directions

and the luncheons were put on

the back burner.

President Don Workman

(COL, Ret) has revived

the quarterly luncheons

and the “Inaugural” fel-

held on Wednesday 23

March 2011 hosted by

The corporate sponsors pre-

sent were Century 21 Proper-

One of our charter members, COL (Ret) Ed Taylor was instrumental in the for-mation of the council. The major thrust of the council is to promote patriotic ceremonies honoring our nation and the men and women that have earned our freedom. In addition the council offers guest speakers, supports the Lassen Nursing Home and assists with veterans stand downs. As a result of the council's efforts every new classroom in St. Johns County received a United States flag. Considering the number of new schools that in itself was quite an ac-complishment. There have been issues with hiring and keeping qualified directors and passing initial inspections. I want to ensure that all are aware the home is in operation, just not operating at capacity. The main issue has been passing an initial inspection that would permit veterans who are served by Medicare and/or Medicaid. That failure resulted in turn-over of one director and another was offered a position near their home for much more salary. I am happy to re-port that the inspection has been passed and now the home awaits a certification number. This number is needed before additional residents in those categories can be admitted. Congressman Mica has stepped in to speed that certification process. We who have been involved have been

Speaking to a packed house, COL Rich Gallant eloquently delivered a memorable address to the First Militia Chapter members. "The success of the Brigade's mission rests upon the accomplishments of the NCOs and Soldiers of the Brigade," COL Gallant stated. His pride in his Soldiers was evident as he described the deploy-ment from beginning to end.
