By 1915, Grove had completedthe Grove Park Inn andbecome involved in other civicprojects. Grove understood that a successful city neededa vibrant downtown. In the early 1920's, hebegan plans to build an elegant new buildingto enliven the downtown of the city he hadcome to love.

He conceived of the Arcade as "the most ele-gant building in America" and as a new kind ofretail center. Architect Charles N. Parkerdesigned the Arcade, which was originally

envisioned as a 5-story base with a 14-storytower, filled with shops, offices, and living spaces.Grove died in 1927, two years before the building wascompleted. Only the base was built, yet at 269,000square-feet, it was by far, the largest building in theregion.

When the Arcade opened in 1929, it quickly becamehome to a fine collection of local shops and services.Tenants included candy and cigar stores, a haberdash-ery, a public stenography office, fruit stands, millineryshops, beauty parlors and barbershops, a photographycenter, bookstalls and specialty groceries. Offices filledthe upper floors. For 13 years, the Arcade was the cen-ter of commercial and civic life in Western NorthCarolina.

The Arcade was closed when the Federal Governmenttook over the building as part of the effort to winWorld War II. Officials chose the building because itwas large and located in a safe, remote place

Following the war, the Arcade continued under Federalownership and eventually became the headquarters forthe National Climatic Data Center.

The Grove Arcade was placed on the National Registerof Historical Places in thge 1980s. In response to pub-lic demand that the Arcade’s historic architectureremain intact and the building be returned to its origi-nal function, a Mayor’s Task Force was established in1985.

In the years that followed, more than a dozen privatedevelopers considered renovating the building.Eventually a group of community leaders and con-cerned citizens formed the Grove Arcade PublicMarket Foundation. This not-for-profit had the missionof restoring the Grove Arcade to its original form andfunction.

In 1997, the City of Asheville acquired title to thebuilding under the National Monument Act and signeda 198 year lease with the Foundation.

Since then, the Foundation has seen to the restorationof the Grove Arcade Building and its spirit. Therestored Grove Arcade opened in late 2002 andincludes shops, restaurants, offices and 42 luxuryapartments.

No living designer has more credits on Golf Digest'slist of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses. Fazio haswitnessed firsthand the ebbs and flows of the golfindustry.

"It is capitalism 101" said Fazio. "The growth spirt in golf from 1992-2005 was just as much about real estate as it was about golf. Duringthe 13-year period, the industry added 3,000 golf courses, a numberthat ultimately exceeded demand. Just as the real estate is slowly heal-ing, the golf industry is slowly healing."

Fazio's primer for a successful communityTom Fazio believes there are eight important criteria to analyze beforejoining a golf community.

A strong initial developer, quality golf, a central location, numerouschurches and banks, access to healthcare, strong non-profits, a con-venient airport, and a dedicated Board of Directors all play a role inthe vitality of a club.

Fazio distinguishes between the word club and community. "In mymind, club refers to the physical amenities, community refers to thepeople," said Fazio.

"When a strong initial developer launches a club, the infrastructure isbuilt to high standards and ages well," said Fazio. "Down the line, when the club is transitioned over to the members, the club is in everybit as good shape, sometimes better shape, than when it held its grandopening."

Through his 40 years in golf course design, Tom Fazio has been

recognized for creatingaward-winning courses

around the world.

Champion Hills Club celebrates 25 years

Page 17: Fine Homes of WNC Fall 2013

Fazio can't underscore the importance of quality golf. "Imight be a bit biased since I designed the course atChampion Hills," smiled Fazio. "But, the fact is, a qualitygolf experience drives membership. The course is thecore amenity everyone focuses on."

A central location is key. "We raised our family inHendersonville. The possibility of driving 45 minutes toget to a grocery store was not an option," critiqued Fazio."While removed from downtown, Champion Hills is onlya 10 minute drive to Main Street Hendersonville." Fazioalso advises to research accessibility of churches, banks, and healthcare.

"A town with a complete array of services shows peopleare serious about living there. Unfortunately, we can'tcheat father time. As we get older, health care becomesmore and more important. It is comforting to knowHendersonville is served by Pardee Hospital and MissionHospital, a regional medical center close by."

"We all want the next generation to excel. A strongschool system guarantees our kids have a fighting chancein the ever more competitive business world," said Fazio."For those families who need a little extra help, healthynon-profits are a lifeline.

This year marks another important anniversary inHendersonville. Twenty years ago, my wife and I found-ed the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County, one ofthe premier non-profit charities in the state."

Finally, a strong Board insures the stability of a commu-nity will endure. "Members must place trust in theirelected Board of Directors," advised Fazio. "The destinyof the club is in their hands. At Champion Hills, the hier-archy of control is clearly defined. This creates strongoversight and crisp management decisions."

As a result, even during the recent recession, the com-munity remained debt-free and the member-owned clubmaintained a healthy financial reserve. In fact, in 2010,the club expanded the already extensive amenities withnew dining options, renovation of the clubhouse andexpansion of the fitness center.

"It does not surprise me Champion Hills is celebrating its25th anniversary year, as a successful, well-run memberclub. It has all the pieces of the puzzle." said Fazio. "I'mproud to call it my summer course."

“It does not surpriseme Champion Hills iscelebrating its 25thanniversary year, as asuccessful, well-runmember club.

Visitors to Lake Lure in Western North Carolina have long

appreciated the natural beauty of the area. The Hickory Nut Gorge

where Lake Lure sits among the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains

is home to amazing vistas and an environment of extraordinary

biodiversity.

Chimney Rock State Park attracts visitors from all over the world to enjoy hikingits trails. Now visitors can enjoy a new phenomenon, the Lake Lure FloweringBridge, a vision that has come to life just this year.

The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge

Page 29: Fine Homes of WNC Fall 2013

The gardens have welcomed visitors since April, but the official Grand Opening andDedication of the bridge is scheduled for Saturday, October 19. Scheduled activities for thatday include guided tours of the gardens with docents, as well as exhibits and items for salefrom the Lake Lure Artists Club in an adjacent shaded grove.

Beginning at 4:30 that afternoon, ceremonies will include remarks from Peter Loewer, VicePresident of the Botanical Gardens at Asheville. A scavenger hunt is planned for children,as well as music and light refreshments. The traditional ribbon-cutting will feature a garlandof flowers. As dusk approaches, the lights, including bridge lamps reminiscent of thoseoriginally on the bridge in 1925 will illuminate the gardens.

As he tells the story, Bill Miller was "dragged as a child" to the Bridge of Flowers inShelburne Falls, Massachusetts. Created in 1929 by a group of determined women on anold trolley bridge spanning the Deerfield River, the Bridge of Flowers remained in Miller'smind, a vivid memory of walking across a river between flower beds. Its unique attractionlingered in his thoughts for decades.

Now retired in Lake Lure, Miller remembered the unique beauty of that bridge when the1925 highway bridge over the Rocky Broad River was replaced and decommissioned in2011.

As a member of the Lake Lure Parks and Recreation Board, Miller saw the possibility to turnthe old bridge into a garden reminiscent of the one from his childhood visits. Though origi-nally scheduled for demolition, at Miller's urging the old triple-arch bridge over the RockyBroad was instead deeded to the Town of Lake Lure.

Miller spread the word about his idea and brought together like-minded residents of theHickory Nut Gorge. The enthusiastic group formed the non-profit Friends of the Lake LureFlowering Bridge with a mission to create a "Gateway to Somewhere Beautiful."

They began raising funds for the project even as they started learning how to go about thework. Consideration had to be given to preservation of the bridge structure itself, as well asprotection of the trout stream that flows beneath it. The group hired landscape architects todesign a plan for gardens that would stretch more than 350 feet with approaches from bothends of the 155-foot bridge surface.

The bridge surface had to be smoothed to allow a protective surface to be applied.Volunteers, with help and advice from local engineers, planned and installed irrigation andelectrical infrastructure. Local artisans created raised garden beds on the bridge surface, faced with natural stone to complement the graceful balustrades that line the bridge. A gen-tly curving path of pavers was created through the flower beds, continuing the Town ofLake Lure walkway.

The development of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is ongoing. With a focus on nativeplants and a mission to educate, every effort is made to help visitors identify the plants theyare seeing. The volunteer garden committee not only works to keep the beds watered, fertil-ized and mulched, but manages seasonal changes needed to keep the gardens thrivingthroughout the year.

The East Gardens include a Founders Circle and a dry creek bed as well as split rail fencesand a hand-crafted locust bench where visitors can sit to enjoy a view of the river flowingbelow. Unique plants are here, too, including the Franklin Tree, also called the "lost camel-lia."

An American native plant lost completely from the wild in 1803, this plant was saved by a botanist father and sonteam, the Bartrams, who named it for their friend Benjamin Franklin and saved it as a cultivated plant. Also visiblein the East Gardens are the antique gates that support the beautiful Lake Lure Flowering Bridge sign made by alocal iron artisan. Standing tall over the gardens is an historic lamppost that once stood in front of the old LakeLure School. This lamppost, like many features of the gardens, was donated by a local resident.

On the bridge itself, twelve garden beds delight visitors with their individual themes. The herb garden includesmedicinal, culinary, fragrant and ornamental plants. One bed is dedicated the Lake Lure Classical Academy, featur-ing their mascot, the Raptor, and plants chosen by the students, including some that are carnivorous. There are twobeds that feature plants selected since 1982 by the North Carolina Botanical Society as North Carolina Wildflowersof the year.

There are also garden beds that feature roses, prairie plants, succulents, fragrants, tropicals and plants that attractbirds and butterflies. Throughout these beds are decorative items placed to enhance the viewing experience, mostdonated by area residents.

The diversity of these gardens reflects the accommodating climate of the area which is part of a thermal belt, amountainside zone where frost or freezing temperatures are less likely to occur than they are at either higher orlower elevations.

Still in development are the gardens at the west approach to the bridge. As funds become available, the pathwaywill extend through this area to nearby Boys Camp Road. Early planning suggests featuring more native plants inthis area.

As progress continues with the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, the attraction is drawing not just visitors from near andfar, but also entrepreneurial ventures. Already serving customers nearby is the recently opened Carolina Moon coffee shop located in the Pinnacle Sotheby's Realtybuilding.

The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge has been recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National WildlifeFederation. In 1883 a small home was built at 48 Spruce Street on a 95x 190' lot. Built by a leading private banker, Erwin Sluder, itwas a wedding present for his daughter and son-in-law,Cordelia and W. W. Barnard. When the home was com-pleted, it went through various owners. The house was sold to J.H Herring for $3,600 on April 1,1884. Then the Barnard’s purchased the house back onMarch 14, 1885 for $3,390. The house was sold again onJuly 13, 1889 to a Mrs. Alice Johnston Reynolds for $7,500,who would be the first to open the house as a business.During this time between 1883 and 1889, the house hadgone through a few expansions and updates. By the timeMrs. Reynolds purchased the house, it was electrified andplumbed with running water.Under Mrs. Reynolds ownership, the house at 48 SpruceStreet was known as "The Reynolds' boarding house". Ithad glowing advertisements in local and tourist informationbooklets and was a successful business until Mrs. Reynolds'death in July 1900. The house was then purchased by acouple from Kentucky, Reverend Thomas M. Myers and hiswife Mary. The Myers renamed the boarding house, "Old KentuckyHome" and began a six year ownership of the business.During his ownership, the Old Kentucky Home was operat-ed by several proprietors, until it was sold to Mrs. Julia

Wolfe in 1906. Thomas Wolfe later drew the ReverendMyer's portrait as the "Reverend Wellington Hodge" in Look Homeward, Angel.

After viewing a few other possible boarding houses intown, Mrs. Wolfe heard that the Old Kentucky home wasfor sale. Mrs. Wolfe appreciated the fact it was only ablock from the family home and, after a walk through withMrs. Myers, approached her husband about the purchase.W.O. Wolfe aligned to his wife’s business desire and possi-bly with some relief, agreed and told the real estate agent,

Purchased by W.O. and Julia Wolfe on August 30, 1906,the boarding house came with 19 boarders, paying $8.00 aweek, and the name Old Kentucky Home. During thenegotiations, Reverend Myers asked that the business keepthe name in honor of his home state. Other than a fewbrief times when Julia Wolfe subleased the house, theboarding house at 48 Spruce Street was known as the OldKentucky Home. The purchase of the boarding house did more than bring inincome for the family; it also created an irrevocable split inthe family. Mrs. Wolfe found it difficult to run her businessfrom the family home on Woodfin Street and moved intoher boarding house, bringing her youngest, Tom, to livewith her amongst the boarders. For over a decade the fami-ly moved between the two residences. The daughters

W.O. and Julia Wolfe bought the house in 1906.It came with 19 boarders paying $8 a week.

stayed mainly at the family home with their father, whilethe sons would shift back and forth between the twohomes.Although a divide within the life of the family, the OldKentucky Home did hold many fond memories as well.Wolfe would fondly remember the family and boardersgathering around the piano in the parlor while his sisterMabel would play. W.O. would entertain the boarders andfamily with long rhetoric and literature passages ofShakespeare, Tennyson, and others from memory. The boarding house even served as a back drop for impor-tant family life events, like the weddings of the daughtersof Effie in 1908 and Mabel in 1916. But not all the familyevents in the boarding house were positive. The boardinghouse is also where Tomís brother, Ben, died in 1918 andhis father died in 1922.Ten years after Julia Wolfe's purchase, the boarding houseremained practically the same in appearance, but in 1916she undertook a sizeable expansion in order to accommo-date a more boarders and thus, earn more money. Duringthe expansion, Mrs. Wolfe added a large sun-parlor,extended the dining room, included a small family diningroom, and included two sleeping porches upstairs, alongwith bathrooms, a water closet, and bedrooms of all sizes.

Tom remembered the extent his mother took to keep theexpansion as economical as possible in his novel LookHomeward, Angel.

"The construction was after her own plans, and of thecheapest material: it never lost the smell of raw wood, cheap varnish, and flimsy rough plastering, but she hadadded eight or ten rooms at a cost of only $3,000."

-Look Homeward, AngelSince 1916, the appearance of the house has changed lit-tle, except for the occasional change in color. Wolfedescribed the boarding house as a "dirty yellow" in hisnovel and that was most likely accurate during the time hespent in the house. In a 1921 letter to his son, W.O. wroteof a recent change in appearance when the house waspainted cream with chocolate trim. By 1950, the house was painted white, possibly paintedthat color as early as the 1930’s.Since its construction in 1883, the house at 48 SpruceStreet changed like the city around it; growing to accom-modate the tourism trade and expansion of Asheville. Thehappiness and grief within its walls inspired one ofAmericans greatest literary authors and reflects the historyof family and city in the early 20th century.
