I am delighted to be entering my 5th year with the Gig Harbor Film Festival. As a founding board member, I have had the privilege to be involved in the excitement generated from a start-up project, to a fully successful , annual signature event. The festival has evolved dur-ing the past few years, with the addition of a 72-hr. competition, KidsFest Sunday, filmaker workshops, annual achievement awards, and a

growing population of enthusiastic viewers. I am looking forward to the continued growth of the festival and the exciting new events to come!

At the same time, uni-versal concepts rise to the surface: home placement can be more beneficial than institutional care; urban living impacts disease onset and outcomes; and treat-ment modalities that integrate psychiatric and outpatient treat-ment can be the most effective. In the end, it is my hope that the findings clarified and made accessible in “Afflictions” help shape the care and treatment of the mentally ill in Indonesia, in other developing nations and around the world.

‘Do You Really Want to Know?’ is a documentary about the complex emotional, ethical and psychological issues surrounding the new frontier of predictive genetic testing. The film follows three families who have been confronted with the decision of whether or not to be tested for Huntington’s disease - a degenera-tive neurological illness that is akin to having ALS, Schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s - and one of the first diseases people could be accurately and conclusively tested for, before the onset of any symptoms. As sci-entists discover more ways to identify diseases before we know we have them, ‘do you really want to know?’ will be a question more and more of us will face.

Director’s statement: Filmmaking is a family affair for me. With my cousins, Kaia and Truman acting, my younger brother Krist-offer composing, and me directing, we have completed several short films that have shown at festivals around the country. It has been great fun creating and crafting comedic stories to share with others. We all love Rod Serling’s “The Twilight Zone” so our latest short pays tribute to telling a tale with a twist.

Milam both not guilty of murder-ing 14-year old Emmett Till from Chicago. Before the trial they had admitted to kidnapping Emmett, but held no blame in his disappearance and consequent murder. They weren’t even indicted for the abduction: off scot-free, clean as a whistle. Not a word had been uttered outside a courtroom by them or their kin, until now. Without this missing piece of the puzzle, hypoc-risy and myth had flourished.

It is now January 24, 1956, nearly six months after the kidnap-ping, murder and subsequent trial. William Bradford Huie sits down with the accused killers, J.W. and Roy, two men who have been hoisted on the shoulders of white supremacy. Huie ques-tions the men, not as a journalistic source and not as interroga-tor to witness, but as a southern white man to southern white men. He knows they did it, that answer is brutally obvious. As any self-respecting film festival, Gig Harbor hosted its fifth annual 72 Film Competition, bringing in filmmakers from around the area, amateur and professional alike. Our aim: to bring light to the lesser-known filmmakers in the area and give them a chance to prove their creative ability in a relatively short amount of time.What is the 72 Hour Film Competition? Developed to chal-lenge the creativity and technological skills of the filmmaker, competitors have 72 hours to create a movie of up to five min-utes. All script writing, shooting, light design, sound record-ing and editing must take place during the allotted time. As if that isn’t challenging enough, each film must include several common elements, such as a prop, a line of dialogue and an action, which must be used within the script.Come and support our young and seasoned filmmakers....the first place winners within two age groups, Youth and Adult, will receive $250 cash. Come and support the youth and adult talented Gig Harbor Filmmakers....be part of the awards ceremony Sunday evening....October 21, 2012.
