    THE TEAM LIST

    Rosa recallsPioneersglory daysNATHAN DOLE

A LOT has happened in the 14years since Simon Rosa firstravelled from Brim to play

his first match for the BendigoBank Pioneers Football Club.

Its been a road well travelledn which Rosa has played forhe Pioneers, Carlton, Bendigo

Bombers, Peel Thunder in WA andnow Golden Square.

Rosas play as a midfieldern the Pioneers from 99 until001 has him in the running forelection in the 30 greatest ashe club celebrates 21 years.

The first instalment of six in aeries being run by the Bendigo

Advertiser is the Selwood twins Adam and Troy, the silky-skilledNick Dal Santo, ruckman HughFoott, and wingmen Rick Ladsonand Simon Rosa.

A dozen years after they playedn Bendigos only appearance in

a TAC Cup grand final, Ladsonand Rosa are now team-mates atGolden Square.

Ladson is a first-year coach athe Bulldogs, who are striving for

    a fifth consecutive premiershipvictory.

There have been a lot of

matches, a lot of highs, and somelows since those days, said

Rosa, who will play a key role for

Square in tomorrows battle of theBFNLs Bulldogs at GisbornesGardiner Reserve.

Among the many highs havebeen premiership victories withGolden Square the past three

    years.

Rosa said playing for thePioneers helped develop his

    football in many ways.

They were challenging times, but great times.

I played a couple of matchesfor the Pioneers as a 16-year-oldin 99, and then had two full yearswith the club.

Like many Pioneers over theyears, Rosa and his family rackedup many hours and kilometrestravelling for training andmatches.

Warracknabeal is two hoursaway from Bendigo, so it was abig strain, not just for me, but thefamily.

In the second half of the 2001season, Rosa boarded withPioneers regional manager RayByrne and his family.

The support network wasfantastic, not just from Ray, butalso from Neville Strauch, as wellas coaches Rod Macpherson, and

my first coach at the Pios, BrianWalsh, said Rosa.

The 2001 team had manyplayers kick on to play AFL, whileothers have made their mark inthe Bendigo FL and other leaguesacross the state.

It was a great team to be partof, Rosa said.

    ROUND 12 SNAPSHOT

    James Bristow

    MATCH OF THE ROUND

HARD to go past the battle of theBulldogs at Gardiner Reservewhere fourth-placed Gisborne hostsfth-placed Golden Square.

The winner will most likely becomeavourite to grab third place, whilehe loser is probably destined to

attle for fourth and fifth place. The pain of last years after the

iren grand final defeat to GoldenSquare still lingers at Gisborne.

To rub salt into the wounds GoldenSquare pounded Gisborne by 11oals in round three this year.

The return of James Bristow toGolden Squares line-up add spiceo the game.

The last time the star forwardlayed at Gardiner Reserve he

    almost single-handedly won the

game for Square as his seven goals

    helped turn a five-goal deficit into a

    five-goal win.

    UNDER THE PUMP

Its been a massive week for

    South Bendigo.

    The Bloods suf fered their

    third-straight loss last Sunday and

then had star on-baller Justin Wilsonthrow in an 11th-hour clearance toBears-Lagoon Serpentine.

A war of words followed. Hardlya good lead-up to a potentiallyseason-defining clash with arch-rivalSandhurst.

On a positive note, the Wilsonoff-field drama might just galvanisethe Bloods on the field.

A backs-to-the wall win overSandhurst might just be the tonic toreignite Souths season.

    STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

For the first time in six yearsCastlemaine has the opportunity toscore a season-sweep over KangarooFlat.

Not since 2007 has Castlemainewon both matches in the same

season against the Roos. The youngMagpies won their first encounterthis year by 17 points and will go intotomorrows clash at Beck Legal Ovalconfident of causing another upset.

    THE FINAL WORD

Strathfieldsaye should have littletrouble in defeating Maryborough

which would see the Storm take topspot off Eaglehawk.

The winner of the Gisborne and

Golden Square game will be hopingSouth Bendigos misery continues

    against Sandhurst. Theres a strong

chance that by 5pm tomorrow wellhave just two games seperating thirdand sixth place on the ladder.

At the other end, Castlemainemust win to have any chance of

    avoiding the dreaded wooden spoon.

    Being more consistent across

    four quarters especially

    defensive efforts is a major

focus for us in this match. Our

    efficiency when we go forward

has to be better. We are winning

enough of the footy, but not

    scoring enough from chances.

    David Newett, coach

    There is genuine excite-

    ment in our group about

    this week. A VFL power-

    great experience.

    Ports had a hat-trick of

Massive task for Gold on the Boroughs

performance against Frankston was one of

Golds best this season. Will be important

Its been a long time since the Superooshave gone into a game with a great chanceof achieving consecutive victories.

The Dennis Grinton-coached Mitiamo willlook to the likes of Alex Chapman, BraydenBaines, Mick Galvin to play well and beatthe Blues, a feat it has achieved many timesover the past 15 years.

    Best last week: Brayden Baines.

MitiamoHAD the bye last round after a 105-pointvictory the previous week against Inglewood.

An on-ball division led by ruckman PaulPellegrino, the versatile Chris Belz andclassy Simon Davies should set up plentyof scoring chances for the Maroons.

Was pushed all the way by Calivil Unitedback in round four, so the Phil Birchmore-coached Newbridge must be switched onfrom the start.

    Best last week: Bye.

NewbridgeWON a tough battle with Inglewood lastweek by 26 points.

A talented midfield for the Demonsincludes Anthony Dennis, a winner of theNeville Strauch Medal as club champion atthe Bendigo Pioneers.

The play of Dennis, Henry Miller and LloydMaxted will be crucial to Calivil Unitedshopes of beating Newbridge this time.

    Best last week: Jay McDonald.

COMPLETED a recruiting earlier this weekand will have former Sydney Swans Team

of the Century player Darryn Cresswell lineup in the centre tomorrow.

Cresswells experience and skill will be ahuge plus for the Tony Southcombe-coachedBloods.

Elmore will be determined to play a lotbetter than last weeks 17-goal loss atHuntly.

    Best last week: James Drake.

ElmoreWAS pushed all the way by Mount Pleasant,so the Bulldogs cannot afford to relax in this

match on Elmores turf.Named in the centre, North young gun

Jordan Ford will gain a lot should he beopposed to Cresswell.

An attack led by Michae l Spooner, AarrynCraig and Elliott Massina will be tough forthe Bloods to hold over four quarters.

    Best last week: Jordan Ford.

North BendigoTHE Bombers will be fired up as they aimto bounce back from a 58-point loss at

Lockington.Theres plenty at stake in this match on

Leitchvilles turf as fourth takes on fifth.

The Bombers teamed well to score afour-goal win at Heathcote when these clubslast met.

Heathcote has improved a lot since then.

    Best last week: Bye.

LeitchvilleAN exciting run of wins was ended last weekas Lockington-Bamawm United proved to be

too skilful, slick and strong for the Saints. The Grant Ford-coached Heathcote will be

fired up as it knows its hold on the fourthrung is in jeopardy.

Will need players the calibre of Ford,Marc Millard and Condon to win their shareof contests as the centre ball-ups andstoppages.

    Best last week: Dallas Middleton.

    Heathcote

THE Cats are on a seven-game winningstreak and a formidable opponent on theirhome ground.

Although coach Kahl Oliver is still on thesidelines, Lockington-Bamawm United hasplenty of scoring power.

A classy midfield includes MattBongiovanni, who was best afield in lastSeptembers grand final victory.

    Best last week: Liam Main.

LBUVICTORY in round two was just the secondtime Huntly has beaten LBU.

The Stacy Fiske-coached Hawks showedno mercy as they beat Elmore by 105 pointslast round, but pressure from the Cats willbe much greater on every line and will lastall match.

A Hawks half-forward line of Klein-Bretler,OToole and McErvale looks to be one of thestrongest in the league.

    Best last week: Josh Harris.

HuntlyALTHOUGH beaten, the Blues put in a fineperformance to be within 16 points atthe end of last Saturdays clash at NorthBendigo.

Its been a scenario thats happened quiteoften this season in which Mounts has notgone down by much.

The Shaun Young-coached Blues will bedesperate to break the trend in this match.

    Best last week: Chris Black.

Mount PleasantPLAYED well to beat White Hills by five pointslast round and will be confident of achievingback-to-back victories.

Form and ladder position mean little whenthe Blues and Grasshoppers meet.

Although it will start favourite, Colbo mustwork hard in every quarter to ensure it takesthe points.

    Best last week: Jacob Weppner.

    ROYAL PARK v CARISBROOK

    Royal Park first-year

    coach Greg Stewart has

    ransformed the Tigers from

    easybeats to a side capable

    of entertaining and attacking

    ootball. Would be upset of

    he year should Park win.

    Carisbrook the unbeaten

    Redbacks should add to

heir streak. Nathan andNick Wright are in superb

    ouch in attack, and the

    defence is strong.

    ROVERS v MALDON

    Rovers a winless season

    or the Magpies, who have

    had many injuries.

A key for Rovers it keep the

    core playing list together

or next year and chase a

    victory against one of the

    eagues more lowly clubs.

    Maldon the Dons have had

    a topsy-turvy season, so the

    eturn of gun midfielder Tom

    Cain is a huge plus.

    LEXTON v DUNOLLY

Lexton the fourth-placedTigers are not totally reliant

on Matt Brown to kick a lot

    of goals each week.

    Rob Mosby, Dan Chester,

    ames Templeton, Jordan

    Phelan and Michael Jennings

    hve been standouts.

    Dunolly has lifted in recent

    weeks, and despite just two

    victories this season, cannot

    be taken lightly.

    GOAL KICKERS

    NATTE BEALIBA v HARCOURT

    Natte Bealiba teamed

    brilliantly to defeat Navarre

in upset of the season last

    round. Swans stars Stephen

    Ross, Mark Fitzgerald, Zac

    Perez and Chris Jardine are

    in hot form.

    Harcourt has shown it can

mix it with the top sides. The

    play of Paul Chaplin against

    Ross, Matt Giri opposed

    to Jardine, and Alan Mack

    against Fitzgerald will be

    keys to the Lions hopes.

    NAVARRE v TRENTHAM

Navarre after a shock loss,Navarre will be desperate

    to hit back. Coach Daniel

    Parkin and star forward

    Daniel Parkin are likely to

    miss several weeks because

    of injury.

    Trentham the form of

    coach Clayton Scoble

    and young stars Luke

    Whitehouse and Lewis

    Bruton have been the

    shining lights in a

    disappointing season for

the club. Will be tough to

halt a Navarre line-up on the

    rebound from defeat.

    TALBOT v AVOCA

    Talbot desperate for

victory to stay in touch with

the top eight. The play of

    Matt Smith, Rowan Prentice,

    Trent Barras and Jon Arnel

    will be important to the

    Hawks hopes.

    Avoca Murray Bond booted

    nine goals against Rovers,

    but the Hawks defence is

    much stronger. Should be a

    great clash between seventh

    and ninth.

    CAMPBELLS CREEK v

    NEWSTEAD

    Campbells Creek was

    outgunned by Carisbrook

    last round. Has a reasonably

    potent attack, but has

    struggled to limit the

    damage at the other end.

Newstead the Kangarooswill be aiming to cemen

their place in the top three.

    An attack led by Daniel

    Christmas, Nathan Webster

    and David Wall should

    ensure Newstead wins the

    Castlemaine derby.

    Selections: Carisbrook,

    Maldon, Lexton, Natte

    Bealiba, Navarre, Avoca,

    Newstead.
