FUENGIROLA

The main fair in town is an ancient tradition held in honour of the Virgin, Nuestra Señora del Rosario:

October, 6 - 12 Fuengirola counts with a dedicated fairground, mostly covered in rows of casetas (also known as Peñas).

The Casetas are the heart of the fair. You will spend most part of the fair in one of these special places who are public (free admission ). These casetas are filled with music, live performances, dancing, eating, drinking, and partying until the wee hours of the morning. Although owned by the Council, local associations and groups are usually in charge of each Caseta. Therefore, besides the oficial programme of the fair, the Casetas have their own programme of performances, as well as a delicious daily menu (Ask each Caseta for their daily activities and menu). The Caseta for Senior Citizens provides drinks and a daily menu at a reasonable price (do not miss their programme - see page 8 - and ask them for th eir daily menu ).

The fairground contains a mixture of attractions:

children´s rides and adult´s rides, as well as sidestalls and games. (On children´s day, the funfair has a 50% discount for children- see page 6 ).

Men and women dress up using the traditional “traje corto” for men and the “traje de sevillana” or “traje de flamenca” for women.

A way to integrate is to learn as much as you can about the culture of your community.

Have you tried to enjoy the fair the same

way as other Spanish people do? Give it a try!

Eating and drinking at the fair is one of the

pleasures of the fair. Further to the wide range of Spanish dishes (raciones) and the daily lunch menu that you can find if you visit a Caseta, you will be able to find bars and stands selling fast food on the fairground. What would Spanish people drink ? Alcoholic beverages such as Vino Manzanilla, Vino fino de Jerez, Rebujito, Beer...And of course, non

alcoholic-beverages, soft drinks, etc.

Casetas? Individual decorated and covered stands built on

the fairground.

Manzani lla?

Further to the Spanish term “chamomile”, manzanilla wine is

a variety of fino sherry.

The typical dance during the fair ... Have you tried?

The “sevillanas” are a type of folk music that you can hear mainly in fairs and festivals. It´s a flamenco-style music consisting of four different parts.

You can find shools teaching “baile por sevillanas”

in nearly every town in Spain (even in other countries of the world). During the fair, you will find people dancing sevillanas everywhere, dressed with the colourfull “traje de sevillanas”.

Do not be embarrassed. Try yourself. Look at others and just do the same. You will enjoy much more... Activities and events for all ages...

You will find a wide range of activities and events for all ages. Some are for adults, senior citizens or children, but you will find more than one of your interest. Read the programme carefully and prepare your own fair... See page 12 for a summary.

After a long day and night dancing and enjoying the fair, there is nothing better than a “caldo de puchero ”.

The “caldo de puchero” is usually served with some

leaves of spearmint.

If you have danced until very late and the new day is starting, another Spanish tradition is to

eat the famous “chocolate con churros ” before you leave the fairground.

If you really want to dance and enjoy the fair until late at night, we recommend you to take a nap after you have lunch at the fairground... And to return to the fair after it.

And if you had a wine, or two, or three...

Please, do not drive back home. Buses run to and from the fair at regular intervals (ask the Tourist Office for the local bus timetable for the fair ).

Caldo de puchero? A type of chickpea-based stew called “cocido”. In Andalusia primary ingredients include:

chickpeas, rice or noodles, beef, veal (and/or chicken), bacon, pork, salt, a bone of jamón, potatoes and vegetables.

Churros? Churros are fried-

dough pastry-based snacks, sometimes made from potato

dough (referred to as a Spanish doughnut.

Pilgrim´s Mass , held in the Parish Church (Plaza de la Constitución), in honour of Our Crowned Virgin “Nuestra Señora del Rosario”. Performance carried out by the Chorus, Hermandad del Rocío de Fuengirola.

10.45 am.

Departure of the traditional ROMERÍA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA LA VIRGEN DEL ROSARIO CORONADA starting from the plaza de la Constitución.

The pilgrimage will count with the participation of typical horsecarts, horsemen and women, pilgrims and vehicles specially decorated for the event.

There will be a performance by the Chorus, Hermandad del Rocío de Fuengirola.

ITINERARY:

Meeting point of the pilgrims from 9.30 am. in calle Miguel de Cervantes.

Route: Departure at 10.45 am., from calle Miguel de Cervantes, encounter with the Virgin, Ntra. Sra. Del Rosario Coronada (plaza de la Constitución), following through Avda. Condes de San Isidro, C/ Hnos Pinzón, Avda. de Mijas, camino de Campanales, Ctra. De Coín, and ending at the area known as Esparragal. 2.30 pm.

The arrival of the Virgin (Santísima Virgen del Rosario Coronada) to the area known as Esparragal is expected to be at 2.30 pm.

Prayers of the pilgrims to the Virgin. The horsecart with the Virgin will be parked in an area established for that purpose within the Esparragal.

Bullfighting (corrida de toros) is a traditional spectacle of Spain, Portugal, some cities in Southern France, several countries in Latin

America, etc., in which one or more bulls are ritually killed in a bullring.

Professional toreros (bullfighters) perform

different formal moves, and in some cases result in injury or even death of the performer.

The bullfight usually concludes with the death of the bull by a sword.

Ocassionally, if the public or the matador

believe that the bull has fought bravely, they may ask the president of the plaza to grant an indulto (the life of the bull is spared), though this is re ally

ocassionally.

del Rosario Coronada, will start after this performance, accompanied by the Musical Group Virgen de los Remedios de Estepona , the Band of Music Archicofradía del Paso y de la Esperanza de Málaga and the Fuengirola Municipal Band of Music.
