A Lesson On Simple Machines
1st class leverDEFINITION
A FIRST CLASS LEVER IS A SIMPLE MACHINE THAT HELPS YOU MOVE THINGS FROM ONE
PLACE TO ANOTHER.THERE ARE FOUR IMPORTANT
PARTS TO A LEVER, A FULCRUM, A BOARD, A LOAD, AND THE EFFORT/FORCE.THE
FULCRUM IS THE OBJECT THAT MAKES THE LEVER WORK.
WHEN YOU PUSH ONE SIDE AND THE LOAD IS ON THE
OTHER END, THE LOAD GOES UP.

2nd class lever
the fULcrum and the effort are on each side of the load. this lever helps you carry heavy
loads to different places. you don’t think about it but 2nd class levers are all around you. a lever is a stiff
bar that balances on a fulcrum. A fulcrum is

A FULCRUM, LOAD, AND EFFORT. THE EFFORT IS IN THE MIDDLE, THE LOAD IS ON THE
OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE FULCRUM. LEVERS HELP
PEOPLE LIFT LOADS WITH LESS FORCE. WHAT COULD DO
WITHOUT LEVERS?

A WEDGE IS A SIMPLE MACHINE THAT IS USED
TO SPLIT VARIOUS OBJECTS LIKE WOOD, WATER, AND AIR. A WEDGE HAS A WIDE END AND A NARROW
END, ALSO IT HAS TWO SIDES THAT INTERSECT TO MAKE A “V”. THE WEDGE IS USED BY
PUTTING EFFORT ON THE WIDE END AND THE NARROW END
SPLITS THE OBJECT. THE WEDGE IS USED A LOT AND IT HELPS US
LIVE OUR LIVES!

DEFINITION
AN INCLINED PLANE IS A SLANTING SURFACE THAT IS USED TO MOVE OBJECTS TO
DIFFERENT LEVELS. EX. SLIDE
IT WILL BE EASIER IF YOU CAN PUSH A LOAD UP AN INCLINED PLANE INSTEAD OF LIFTING IT.

A SCREW JOINS TWO OR MORE
OBJECTS TOGETHER. LARGE SCREWS HOLD PIECES OF FURNITURE TOGETHER. SMALLER SCREWS HOLD
PARTS OF TOYS TOGETHER. FINALLY, THE SMALLEST OF
ALL SCREWS HOLD TOGETHER EYE GLASS FRAMES.

Wheel and Axle
A WHEEL HAS A SMALL OPENING IN THE MIDDLE THAT THE AXLE SLIDES INTO. THE AXLE IS A ROD IN THE CENTER OF A WHEEL.THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT WAYS THAT A WHEEL AND AXLE WORK TOGETHER. ONE WAY THE WHEEL AND AXLE WORK WHEN THE AXLE MOVES, THE WHEEL GOES WITH IT AND KEEPS IT ON TRACK. OR THE AXLE IS HELD IN ONE PLACE AND THE WHEEL SPINS AROUND IT!

Pulley
DEFINITION
A PULLEY IS A WHEEL THAT HAS A ROPE LOOPED AROUND
IT. THE ROPE FITS INTO A GROOVE THAT RUNS AROUND
THE EDGE OF A WHEEL. THE GROOVE HELPS THE
ROPE STAY IN PLACE.YOU HAVE TO PULL THE END OF THE ROPE IN ORDER TO
MOVE THE LOAD.
