Itinerary May 2013

Day 1, Sunday May 12th - Arrive Cairo (Welcome Dinner)

Arrive at Cairo Airport where we will be met by our Quest Travel Tour Managers. They will assist us through customs before transferring us to our Cairo base at the Le Meridian Hotel, overlooking the pyramids in Giza. We will enjoy our first group dinner as private guests in the beautiful residence of Mr Mohamed Nazmy, President of Quest Travel Egypt, whilst the view of the pyramids.

Day 2, Monday May 13th – Giza Plateau/ Sphinx/ Great Pyramid (breakfast/lunch)

We begin our day very early with a special private and exclusive visit to the Giza Plateau, when the area is closed to the public. As you listen closely during Sunrise at the Valley Temple of Chephren on the Giza Plateau, you will hear the incredible sounds of the entire city being called to prayer. Open your door and listen to the cacophony of

sound– Feel the energy of the dawn spirits. We are off to discover some of the most awesome Wonders of the World to touch them and to feel them - the Great Sphinx and the Pyramids of the Giza Plateau. We study them and pay particular attention to the Sphinx. We have a special permit to enter the Sphinx enclosure so that we can get up close and personal with this incredible monument.

There is nothing more awe inspiring than to stand between the mighty paws of the Sphinx and gaze up at its wondrous face as the first rays of sunshine break over the horizon. Our guide, who is an encyclopedia of Egyptology, will give us detailed examinations of various controversial theories surrounding these amazing structures. After an invigorating sunrise we are back to our hotel for an incredible buffet breakfast. In the afternoon, we have a special private visit at the Great Pyramid where we will explore the chambers before spending intimate time in the Kings Chamber, where you will learn about the secrets held within this mighty structure. While there you might like to take a camel ride around the area.

Day 3, Tuesday May 14th– Museum/ Khan Markets/ Afternoon/early evening Flight to Luxor

Following breakfast we check out of our Cairo hotel and visit the Cairo Museum. Our Egyptologist will guide us through this famous museum with a collection of over 200,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts, dating back to 4,000 BC. Visiting the museum is an opportunity to see the statues and artifacts that originally were located in the temples. In the Museum, you will experience first-hand the different periods of

ancient Egypt and the individual artistic and architectural styles of each period. One of the highlights of this museum is the visit to the treasures of Tutankhamun. There will be time to explore the museum on your own.

After our visit to the Museum, we make our way to one of the oldest shopping districts in the world, the Khan El Khalili. Being here is like going back to the time of Ali Baba and Aladdin. Merchants have been trading on this site since at least the 14th century. In 1384 an Emir named Al Khalili built a great Khan here, a three-story hostelry intended to accommodate travelling merchants and their wares. Buyers visited the khan for the goods brought in on the merchant caravans, and the selling and bartering spread to the streets around. The earliest surviving parts of the bazaar today are several great stone gateways that date back to the 1500's. The type of goods offered today has changed very little over the centuries. While you no longer find silk, jewels, or diamonds, the aroma of spices is still very much present. Stalls are heaped with colored powders and stacks of seeds and pods. Coppersmiths still hammer out platters and create coffeepots and enormous crescent-shaped tops for minarets. Whatever you are buying, expect to bargain. It is a ritual of the bazaar, equally applicable to local Egyptian customers and foreign visitors. There are no hard-and-fast rules except one, which is that if you do not bargain, then you will certainly end up paying over the odds. We take an afternoon flight to Luxor, the ancient city of Thebes that was the capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom and check into our beautiful private Yacht “Afandina” to cruise the Nile for 8 days.

There are a total of 8 cabins for guests arranged strictly on a twin share basis. Day 4, Wednesday May 15th - Karnak/ Luxor Temple

Today we tour Karnak, one of the largest temple complexes in the world. Karnak recalls us to the powerful acts of creation, beginning anew, and building on the divine plan. For more than 3,500 years, it has been home to the living statue of the lioness goddess, Sekhmet. Feel free to explore the exciting

city of Luxor by day, perhaps taking a horse and carriage ride to the Luxor Markets or just wandering along the streets and meeting the locals. We visit the Luxor Temple in the evening, which really comes to life under lights at night. Feel the powerful energy within you as you wander through the ancient hallways touching the stones as you go. We meet back at the “Afandina” to settle for the night.

Day 5, Thursday May 16th— Dendera/ Abydos/ Afandina

Another culture rich day as we travel to the exquisite Dendera Temple dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of abundance, love and joy. The temple is built with a zodiacal ceiling that recalls the origins of Egypt. On the rooftop, where Hathor priests and priestesses gathered for their celebrations thousands of years ago, we reconnect to our

destinies. We then continue north to the temple at Abydos, dedicated to Osiris, and housing the nine great beings (the Ennead). This temple rests next to and above the most ancient Osirion, one of the premier power places on the planet. It includes a more recent temple built by Seti I, which contains the most beautiful bas reliefs of any temple in Egypt.

Day 6, Friday May 17th— West Bank/ Sail to Esna

This morning we make a sunrise pilgrimage to Deir el Bahari, the funerary temple of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut. We also visit the Necropolis of Thebes on the West Bank of the Nile. The West Bank holds the tombs of the pharaohs that are inscribed with sacred transformative texts, including the books of knowing light and dark, the book of what

is in the underworld, the book of caverns, and naming and taming the hours of the night. Here are the tombs of Ramses III and VII. We will also see the mortuary temple of Ramses III at Medinet Habu and the Colossi of Memnon. Back on board of the “Afandina”, we sail toward Esna, and delight in watching the timeless beauty along the Nile.

Day 7, Saturday May 18th — Esna/ Sail to Edfu

Today we continue sailing to Esna. The temple of Esna is dedicated to the creative triad of Khnum, Neith and their offspring Hak or Sobek. The site is a prime example of the power of the Nile at inundation. Its hieroglyphs have only partially been translated, and thus the temple represents the mystery and power of an as yet untranslated text.

Day 8, Sunday May 19th— Edfu Temple

Our cruise to Edfu continues with a special treat awaiting us in the early evening. We will have a private visit to the Temple of Horus, one of the most beautifully preserved in Egypt. Here, we follow the pattern of the hero’s quest as we learn how Horus and his followers (the Shemsu Hor) conquered chaos, and we see the sacred marriage of the king and queen as the embodiment of Horus and the goddess Hathor. Look forward to a very powerful guided meditation in this temple. The side chambers of the temple show the complexity of the rites that include a healing chamber, a perfumery, and singer’s rooms. One chamber, called the House of Life, stored all of the sacred texts used in seasonal and daily rituals.

Day 09, Monday May 20th— Kom Ombo Temple

We will gather on deck to share our experiences as we sail to Kom Ombo. There, we visit the only dual temple in Egypt. This dramatic temple poised between the edge of the river and the encroaching desert sand was dedicated to two gods - Sobek the crocodile god of strength, fortitude, fertility and rebirth, and Horus the hawk-headed son of Isis and Osiris.

Day 10, Tuesday May 21st — Sail to Aswan/ Elephantine Island

Today we sail to Aswan, the mythical origin of the Nile River and the home of Nubian kings and queens during the later dynasties of Egypt. We will enjoy a felucca sail to visit Elephantine Island and walk through the layers of time that archaeological explorations have unveiled. Atop the island we gather at the temple of Khnum for an important initiation and affirmation. We will also make an evening visit to the exciting Nubian Marketplace.

Day 11, Wednesday May 22nd — Philae Temple of Isis / Cairo

We rise very early this morning and take a short coach ride to the lakeshore and transfer to a motorboat. We travel on the Nile River to the island of Philae where we will visit the Philae Temple privately. This island represents a fusion of three great civilizations – Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The presence of Isis is felt very strongly in the inner sanctum, the Holy of Holies of her

temple. We’ll take ample time here to experience the healing energy of Isis and her lovely island complex. We leave the “Afandina” for an afternoon flight to Cairo and check into Le Meridian Pyramids Hotel.

Day 12, Friday May 23rd — Cairo/ Baharia Oasis/ White Desert

Leaving Cairo behind we head towards Baharia, upon arrival after lunch we go to the hot spring for a swim. We then drive to the sand dune area and stop off at the crystal mountain before heading to the White Desert. In the White Desert, we explore the lime stone formations and towering mountains before watching the sunset over the desert.

Day 13, Saturday May 24th— White Desert/ Cairo

After breakfast, we drive back to Baharia for lunch before continuing on to Cairo. Check into Le Meridian Pyramids Hotel.

Day 14, Sunday May 25th — Sakkara/ Farewell Dinner

This morning we visit Sakkara to view the Old Kingdom pyramids that rise on the west bank near ancient Memphis. About 2630 B.C., Imhotep, architect to King Djoser (Dynasty III), masterminded the Step Pyramid at Sakkara. The world’s oldest freestanding stone structure, this pyramid consists of six tiers atop a mastaba, or low, oblong tomb, faced with cut stone. We will have lunch at a typical Egyptian restaurant in the countryside. After lunch we visit one of the carpet schools, where Egyptian children use their imagination to make hand made carpets. We will meet in the evening to share our thoughts of our Egyptian experience and enjoy a scrumptious farewell dinner.

Day 15, Mon, May 26th-— Final Departure

The time has come to say farewell to Egypt and depart with many memories, new ideas, thoughts and friends.
