A note from ourArtistic Director
Welcome to 2015 at the Everyman! The support you showed in 2014 for our first full season has been enormously heartening so it is with a great deal of excitement (and perhaps a pinch of trepidation!) that we reveal to you the January to May season. We hope it inspires, challenges and entertains you.
Expect to be bowled over by some of our season highlights, kicking off with the promise of another
spectacular opera as Gounod’s Faust gets the Everyman and Cork Operatic Society treatment. We welcome the first ever Irish production of Martin McDonagh’s extraordinary play The Pillowman, and even though lots of us have seen Tom Crean - Antarctic Explorer already, we can’t wait to have it back again because it really IS that good.
Presenting the best of theatre made here in Cork, is, as ever at the heart of what we do, and in the case of our season opener - MATCHED: Every Man’s Guide to Campaigns of the Heart – not alone are we presenting but producing it too. This hugely entertaining comedy is designed to take the sting out of the mid-January slump as we thought there was no better way to kick off the new year than with a good old laugh! We take a turn into the gothic with Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw over Easter but continue the theme of homegrown hilarity with the return of God Bless the Child from the writings of Frank O’Connor.
As the glitter dust settles on panto season, we must remind families who love to come to the Everyman that we have some must-see shows on the way for small people and grown-ups alike. Theatre Lovett returns with one of our favourite-ever family shows The Girl Who Forgot To Sing Badly in late January and Dr Seuss fans can see
the storybook pages come to life as we welcome the National Theatre (UK) production of The Cat in the Hat.
Music and comedy fans, never fear! For those of you who like nothing more than to laugh your socks off, well, we couldn’t help but ask Des Bishop back again, you enjoyed him that much last time round, and we’ll also welcome Bernard O’Shea, PJ Gallagher and Eilish O’Carroll of Mrs Brown’s Boys fame. Brendan Bowyer is back in town in January and The Everyman Sunday Songbook is back in April with a feast of favourites to sing along to!
And that’s not even the half of it. The best of touring theatre to make you laugh, cry and everything in between can all be found here: from the provocative HEROIN by THEATREclub to the award-winning Beowulf: The Blockbuster, from Carmel Winter’s challenging Witness to Peter Gowen’s heart-warming The Chronicles of Oggle.
We have so many stories to tell you this season, and we hope you can enjoy as many of them as possible!

MatchedEvery Man’s Guide to Campaigns of the Heart
COMEDY
Inspired by Chekhov's much lovedone-act comedies The Bear and The Proposal, Matched is a light hearted and entertaining look at one woman's trials in trying to find (and hold on to) a husband.
Set in one of Ireland's Big Houses in the early part of the 20th century, audiences can look forward to a night of comical misunderstandings involving debts, duels, land, livestock and love!
Natalie, a slightly desperate heiress, is eager to marry Nicholas, if they can only stop fighting long enough for him to propose; Henry, a retired officer of the Hussars, has no intention of flirting with anyone, let alone falling in love or marrying. But, as the best tee-shirts say, “stuff happens”. The outcome is a post-Christmas double dessert designed to banish January blues.

Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents are packers. They squeeze fruit into tins, foxes into boxes, even bikes into brown paper bags. And all the while Peggy sings with the voice of an angel – a grossly unfortunate angel, who can’t sing at all.
But one day work stops working, and the jobs stop coming, and Peggy steps outside to find that winter has arrived… and everyone in her city gone!
Ingenious performer Louis Lovett leads the audience on an untamed adventure that crosses snowy lands and wild seas. As Peggy desperately tries to save the day, we learn about love, loss, the reassurance of goats, and the courage to sing gloriously on or off-key.

Based on a true story of an adopted person’s search for identity.
Actor and playwright Noelle Brown was born into a mother and baby’s home in Cork in the 1960’s and adopted at 8 weeks old. The story begins 35 years later when Noelle embarks on a journey to uncover her true identity and how the system, both church, and state made every step so difficult.
Told through the eyes of a private investigator, it is a poignant and humourous account of an adopted person’s search for identity through a series of letters.

Best known as resident roving reporter and Georgia Salpa’s love interest on RTÉ’s hugely popular Republic of Telly, Bernard is a regular at numerous comedy festivals including The Cat Laughs Comedy Festival in Kilkenny and The Vodafone Comedy Festival in Dublin. His Edinburgh Fringe debut received a 5 star review from the Scotsman in 2008.

Based on Henry James' novella of the same name, The Turn of the Screw concerns a young Governess who finds herself taking charge of two children in the beautiful manor of Bly. Not willing to disappoint the children's charming Uncle, she agrees to his one condition, that he must never contact her. When Miles, the young nephew, is expelled from school without an explanation she finds herself dealing with horrors the Master concealed from her alone.
What is Mrs. Grose the house-keeper trying to keep secret? Who is the strange ghostly figure that haunts the Manor grounds? And what is it about Miles that strikes her as….evil?

Celebrating this, his 80th year, one of Ireland’s most renowned actors and performers, Des Keogh, gets to fulfil a life-long ambition to play legendary Irish man of letters George Bernard Shaw.
Following the phenomenal success of The Love-Hungry Farmer by John B. Keane, and hot on the heels of his appearance in the acclaimed revival of Moll at the Gaiety Theatre, Des will now perform in this hugely entertaining new play, which he also devised, about the many ladies in the extraordinary life of one of the greatest playwrights of all time.
George Bernard Shaw was the author of Pygmalion, which became the universally acclaimed film My Fair Lady. Other titles include Arms and the Man, St Joan, Heartbreak House, Major Barbara and countless others. He was also a hugely controversial essayist and commentator. Shaw not only shared anecdotes about the loves of his life, but also his forthright views on sex, marriage and celibacy.

Originally opened in 1897, it is the oldest purpose built theatre building in Cork. A jewel of late Victorian architecture, the theatre is steeped in history and is a favourite with audiences and performers alike for its intimacy and atmosphere.
