ESD control solutions

20 years ago, a liquid spill or gas released was not a major event. Historically, sectioning valves on tank farms, liquids lines , aggressive pressurized gases etc.. have been electrically actuated due to their remote location. With today's environmental standards and required practices, the need to have ESD capabilities becomes prevalent and changes the operational function of sectioning valves. The lack of spring return capabilities from the different electric actuators designs on the market and its dependence on the supply source to operate and react to any given situation know makes the users vulnerable to dangerous situations and potential environmental catastrophes.

How can we define an ESD valve/damper system? A packaged solution or sets of controls configured to make a rotary or linear actuator go to a desired position upon detection of a set or sets of event(s), autonomously or by dedicated signal. Emergency Shutdown (ESD) Valves and other failsafe valves and dampers assemblies, typically incorporate a spring-to-fail actuator to stroke the valve or damper in the event of an upset process condition.

ESD systems

Typically used on on/off isolation or sectioning valves, controls can be devised to incorporate ESD logic into control valves packages. Most often installed on ball, plug, butterfly, gate and globe valves, solutions can be self contained or integrated into a ESD system. From local to remote triggering, we must first determined the parameter and means by which we will trip the actuator to fail close or open on each applications.

ESD Self contained solutionThe standard SCH control system always requires at least one additional control component to initiate valve shutdown. This type of component is used to initiate the depressurization of the system allowing the actuators spring to move the mainline valve to its failed position. Most common of these shutdown devices are pressure pilot valves, solenoid valves and manual ball valves.The picture shows a Pressurematic Pilot fitted with a manual reset valve (PMR type) being used as the shutdown device.
