SMARTQuake is a
real-time fullyautomated applicationfor high qualityearthquake dataprocessing. It comprisesevent detection, networkconfirmation, hypocenter location, local vs distant eventdiscrimination. Location
of local events isfollowed by MWA or MDmagnitude calcu-lation,by moment tensorinversion, and by sourceparameters determina-tion. For distant events, the body wave magni-tude mb is calculated. Allresults, epicentral maps, and waveforms can beprinted on PostScriptprinters. Locationresults, best doublecouple solution, andsource parameters canbe disseminated byemail. A web interfaceand an AutoDRM areoptional.

SMARTQuake SPECIFICATIONS
The SMARTQuake program package wasoriginally developed to work together with theGeotech Instruments SMARTGeoHub Data
Server, which in turn collects data from remoteGeotech Instruments SMART-24D digitizers,SMART-24R recorders, and SMART-24Aaccelerometers. In particular, the automaticarrival time picks are displayed by the GeotechInstruments SMARTGeoViewer waveformdisplay client.
However, SMARTQuake is also a stand aloneapplication and seismic data can be input fromany continuous file data acquisition system, likethe Geotech Instruments IntelligentCommunication Processor (ICP). The onlyrequirement is that the continuous data files arerelatively short, between 10 seconds and 100seconds, depending on the array aperture.
SMARTQuake starts by picking arrival timeson selected and pre-filtered channels. Thewaveforms after the picks are analysed todiscriminate between local and regionalearthquakes, and teleseisms. S waves are alsopicked in case of local earthquakes. Differentlocation and magnitude determination routinesare then invoked: iterative Geiger method for
local/regional earthquakes, and plane wavemethod for teleseismis. Wood-Anderson MWA orduration magnitude MD is computed for localearthquakes and mb for teleseisms. Locationresults, waveforms with picks, and epicentralmaps are output on a PostScript printer. Eventfiles are archived and converted to commonseismological data formats like GSE or SAC.
The location results are sent by email and/orSMS to a list of addresses/numbers in a fewminutes after the earthquake detection. Theemails are already formatted as required by
some of the most important seismologicalcenters (e.g. IDC, NEIC, EMSC, SwissSeismological Service, etc).

Background seismicity
An optional module in SMARTQuake performsmoment tensor inversion for local earthquakes basedon spectral amplitudes of body wave trains. Theinversion applies constraints for zero trace (or doublecouple source model). The output includes the momenttensor components, its principal P, T and B axes, thestrike, dip and slip of the nodal planes, the scalarseismic moment, standard errors, together with a Wulfprojection on the lower focal hemisphere, all appendedto the outgoing emails. Moment magnitude Mw, stress-drop, source dimension, and energy released are alsocalculated automatically.
SMARTQuake can be scheduled to send periodicallystate-of-health email messages to the operator, andeven to notify in case of LAN breakdowns. Otherfeatures are an optional circular buffer, an AutoDRM,and a web interface.
SMARTQuake can also accept the input data from aset of field disks, automating processing of dataobtained from temporary deployments of portablerecorders.
An optional module is SMARTShake, designed to
automatically generate shake maps if acceleration datachannels are present. These applications arecomputationally and I/O intensive, and especially incase of large networks, should run on a dedicatednetworked Windows computer.
