THUMBS DOWNFood Wastage During Eid HolidaysThe amount of waste has drastically increased as Eid gatherings at home and outdoor picnics take place. It is not appropriate to expect cleaners to clean everything after

you in public places. If everyone takes responsibility for the waste one generates, these places will remain neat and tidy during the holidays. Try to collect leftovers, pack them neatly in disposable containers and share them with the less fortunate.

MANAGE YOUR TRANSIT Try to save by alternating between regional airlines or low cost airlines for your connecting flight.

B U S I N E S S

USE DIFFERENT SEARCH ENGINES Do not depend on airline and hotel websites only. Travel search engines could yield better offers.

CONSIDER DIFFERENT DATES Avoid weekends if possible; one day before or after saves you a good sum.

BENEFIT FROM YOUR MILEAGE If you are not registered in any airline mileage program, it’s about time you do. Reaching high points will give you access to first class lounge regardless where your seat on the plane is.

Revise your travel shopping behaviors to make room for more pocket money.

option will always have

an added cost, but I

recommend you go for it

and pay extra, since there

is always a risk of losing

your money due to sudden

ON THE PLANE For flights of six hours or less, aim for economy or premium. Flying on higher classes is not essential provided you are healthy.

PLAN YOUR SEARCH WELL IN ADVANCE

(Generally 30 – 45 days earlier).

Check for fares on a frequent basis for cost comparisons and promotions. The same applies for hotel bookings.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE FIVE STARS Consider dropping the idea of a five star hotel. Filter your search to affordable boutique hotels with high cleanliness standards.

The element of “fun” is not only beneficial in conducting an enjoyable social enterprise, but also a successful one.

The Secret Ingredient: F U N

Page 27: DR Issue 41

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 23

As a social entrepreneur we hope you double majored in business and good humor. Not everyone has the stomach to look social problems dead in the eye; most of us avoid what we do not like. We decide to tilt our head away from the view to look at something prettier. But a social entrepreneur has the easy outgoing character to tackle them. Their good sense of humor aids them to face obstacles and not feel down or defeated. They probably chuckle at the problem, sigh and shake their head, then pick up a notebook and start planning towards a solution. Take it easy and keep your good spirits high! Don’t forget the evil laugh, it’ll be useful when your enterprise makes it in face of adversity.

When creating an impactful and sustainable solution, you’ll also need to be a skilful brainstorm-er. Brainstorming sessions have made the best of us go blank, however a leading social entrepreneur creates a creative-juice inducing atmosphere for

Muwahaha!

brainstorming. It’d be a place with bean bags, lots of paper, a variety of colors, and other than the usual bullet points, you have to draw your ideas. Yes, stickmen are useful to businesses! Some leaders would even take the employees out to field visits that would inspire them, while some have gone far enough to invite children over to brainstorm. Children have yet to understand the social limits, when you give them a social problem their hyper imagination can dazzle you.

An effective social enterprise relies on the team. A great leader wants diversity in his employees; celebrating different opinions will create new perspectives and demand our thinking to push beyond the customary. He/she treats the team as a family. As a result of close ties with employees, you’ll gain loyalty and better work quality. Additionally, to keep a lively office and healthy competition between colleagues there would be entertaining challenges like a weekly mystery to solve, themed days of the month.

What are the initiatives and projects being undertaken by your team and what’s the purpose of it?Broadly, the Public Affairs department deals with educating the public about the Riyadh Metro project. At a grass-roots level our Community Engagement Teams go out and speak to people face-to-face regarding the project. Either by talking to them about proposed detours or presenting the project in Universities and schools. We work very hard to coordinate with everyone who may be affected by the project and make sure that people feel respected and taken care of. After all, the Metro is for the

people of the city and we want them to feel part of the project. It’s currently a non-commuting culture, how will you encourage people to start riding the buses and trains? This is a great question and one which we have been very aware of from the onset. As people of Riyadh, we love our cars, however when we travel abroad we are very active users of public transport. We are very open to the idea when we are overseas – we just haven’t yet had the opportunity at home.

Now is a period of positive change in the Kingdom. The Riyadh Metro directly fulfills all of the principles outlined in The Vision 2030 and we feel, with a little encouragement and education, Riyadhis will embrace The Metro and make it a huge success. What projects do you have planned to properly assimilate people into the urban developments taking place?Over the next three years we have a series of PR initiatives in the pipeline to educate people about using a public transport system and how it will benefit each of us socially, culturally, physically and economically. The next Public Relations milestone for the project is the launch of the Riyadh Metro Pavilion which is the interactive visitor center for the project. This will open in 2017 and will be a social place where people can come and learn more about the future city of Riyadh. People will be able to sit inside a model train and take a virtual bus ride through the city. It will be a modern and family friendly destination where citizens can learn more about public transport and how the Metro will benefit their lives.

Who are the people or companies behind Torathuna? What made you establish a social responsibility company?

Torathuna was initiated by Saudi Aramco TOTAL Refining and Petrochemical Company (SATORP) in cooperation with the Ministry of Petroleum and Minerals (MINPET). The purpose was to actively preserve heritage for future generations by supporting local entrepreneurs

and local craft businesses in the Kingdom.

SATORP launched Torathuna in support of their vision to be a recognized member of the local community and an active leader in the CSR field. We strongly believe that by helping develop local skills focused on the crafts that were passed down generations, we can be part of a society that contributes positively towards economic diversification in KSA.

How would you describe the art and heritage climate in Saudi Arabia? What is Torathuna doing to prolong preservation?

Saudis have strong passion and appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s rich culture. This passion is found strongly in the visitors of cultural events such as the Janadriyah Festival. These events are used as a means to preserve traditional crafts and cultural heritage. They, however, last for a specific period of time and sometimes lack quality or authenticity.

I had a bucket list, and having my own store was on it. Thanks to Torathuna, I’m finally going to cross it off

At Torathuna, we aim to preserve our heritage for future generations, while

enabling artists and craftsmen

to be successful entrepreneurs

In Torathuna we promote long-term development and

sustainability for all the projects and ideas. We encourage the artisans and craftsmen to learn

how to best design their products. We assess the quality of their products

and projects, map the urban market and make art more suitable to the global environment. To ensure the authenticity of heritage we require

the recruited craftsmen to be Saudi.

– Majed Al Haysoni, CEO of Torathuna

Page 32: DR Issue 41

28 DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 2016

How does the funding aspect work? How can you make the companies more sustainable?

The funding and support comes from SATORP. The process begins when interested entrepreneurs approach Torathuna. After the interview and other necessary evaluations, the scope of the project is finalized. The project documents are sent to the Board Manager for evaluation and approval. Upon approval, funding is delivered to the entrepreneur on an installment basis. A grace period, ranging 6-12 months, is assigned depending on the nature of the project. The loan repayment period can be up to 5 years or more based on the amount.

What kind of support do entrepreneurs need?

Different kinds of support that include but are not exclusive to: marketing development, technical training, financial aspects, HR and company governance. To achieve the needs of all entrepreneurs we use our expertise to develop, help and support the projects when needed.

How can we, as a community, help preserve the artisan culture in the city?

By supporting local products and projects. People can also guide artisans to supporters and developers such as Torathuna.

Designate two headquarters for each team.

HUMANSObjective: Find and bring back the cure vial to the HQ.

Weapons: Water guns filled with colored water (add food coloring), or water balloons.

Rules:

window to sneakily infect other members using chalk. Be careful not to get yourself

caught/killed!

Tips:

Preserve water and do not shoot aimlessly. Keep your buckets somewhere accessible, but if they are out in the open zombies can sabotage you. Scapegoats are occasionally needed.

Now that the heat’s turned up, we all have to resist the urge to crawl into our air conditioned shells. For the ones who can afford heading to a beachside resort this summer, we salute you. And for those staying in, we’re taking matters into our own hands and bringing the beach to us with a poolside luau… on a budget.

TOY STORES

Hawaiian luaus are a DIY dream if you’re strapped for cash. Plus, it’s a great way to cool down by the pool with some flair. Don’t fret it if you don’t know where to start, we’ll walk you through everything. Most of the things you need can be found in Al Suwailim Street. If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a street in Al Deira District with toys and crafts stores specializing in bulk sales down the length of it.

3. Grab as many beach buckets as you need. You can use them as serving plates for your snacks or to build a sandcastle in an empty corner.

2. Fill an inflatable or even plastic kiddie pool with ice and throw in your drinks.

You’re next stop is good ol’ trusty Jarir. Aside from the usual DIY starter kit

(scissors, mounting tape, cutter and glue), you’re

also going to need some acrylic paint, foamboards, heavy paperboard, paper

mache masks, feathers and colored tape.

1. Grab some colorful pool floaties from any toy store to put up on an empty wall.

FLOWERSCheck out the stores with artificial plants. Pick out some flowers to make your hula necklaces and some leaves to hang up as decoration. You can also find ready flower wreaths if you look in the right places.

PHOTOBOOTHCut out two identical half surfboards from the foamboards, stick them together and paint. Get tiki torches from Saco, and place them next to the surfboard for a beachside photo booth. As a bonus, hang colorful fabric in the background.

SIGNSCut out arrows and signs from the paperboard and stick them on leftover foam board. Distribute them around to guide your guests through the party. Use colors, glitter and flashy fonts to make it summery and attractive.

FRUITSYes, fruits can also be decoration. Nothing says luau like watermelons, coconuts, pineapples and melons. Get creative with your presentation, and go big! Try stacking some pineapples on top of each other with green cut out leaves on top to create an edible palm tree!

The one thing you have to keep in mind is that when it comes to decorating a luau, colors are your best friend. Next step? invite your friends over, sit back, relax and take in the sunshine.

TIKI MASKSPaint the paper machemasks in tribal tiki paint, and glue some feathers onto the top. Hang the masks with some of the flower necklaces you made around the space.

If you’re lucky like us, you might even find ready hula skirts!

GET THE KIDS IN THE KITCHEN and Have Some Fun!

Page 43: DR Issue 41

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 39

Mix the batter and sprinkle some fun with your little ones. By Anne-Marie Argile

Baking is an integral part of cooking. Spending time with your children in the kitchen is not just great fun but the perfect opportunity for them to learn about cooking. The smell of baking, the excitement of seeing cakes as they come out of the oven and the joy of eating them will help inspire a healthy interest in food.

Allow plenty of time. Let them get involved as much as possible. Choosing recipes and helping with the shopping can be as much fun as the actual cooking and eating. Remember that scraping the bowl and licking the spoon is the chef’s prerogative, not to mention the best bit!

Keep it simple. Choose a recipe that is suitable for the age and attention span of your child. Use quick and easy recipes for young children, saving the more creative and complicated ones for the older children to experiment with.

It’s going to get messy! It’s a fact, smaller hands won’t be as accurate when it comes to weighing, cracking eggs and spooning cake mixture, but so what if your kitchen descends into chaos under a cloud of flour? It’s all part of the fun.

Need inspiration? The internet is full of fun baking ideas but cook books are a great resource with inspiring pictures. Kids will love flicking through the pages and choosing what to make. Look at cookbooks designed especially for them.

Get creative. When it comes to decorating cakes, colorful icing, sprinkles and sweets spark the imagination. Themes are fun to follow too: characters, pirates, butterflies and all things pretty work well. But remember, perfection is not the aim; having fun and making something delicious that your children will want to eat is.

What got you started? I don’t remember, I never remember not drawing or painting.

Why do you art? It clears my head, and it’s always fun to see the ideas in your mind on paper. And it keeps boredom at bay. Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts? The paintings I do plan usually take a long time to make, and are tough to get right, so I don’t plan very much. Spontaneous ones finish quicker and have more freedom range to paint whatever I want.

What is, in your opinion, the best thing you’ve ever created and why?The pink woods painting. I showed it to one of my friends and she said that it reminded her of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which was what my inspiration was while painting it. So, that was a success I think.

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed?I think it’s growing wonderfully. I think artists should try out different kinds of art and not stick to what is successful to keep it from being a mainstream movement, but I’m sure it will change with time.

Who are your role models?Other than the giants of the Renaissance period, I am completely obsessed with and dead jealous of Daniel Merriam and Claire Basler.

What does being creative mean to you?It means everything! To not have the freedom to imagine and create would make life so boring.

KSA'S CULTURE OF GRAPHIC NOVELS ON THE RISE

Can you tell us a little about yourself? My name is Naif Alkhairallah, and I’ve spent 37 years on planet earth. From a very young age I used to doodle whenever I got the time, pencil and a paper (or any of them). Unfortunately, this hobby started to vanish as drawing creatures was frowned upon in the schooling system. I instead focused on getting a career that is more welcomed and has a clear trajectory, and managed to get my bachelor degree in accounting and started my banking career at the age of 21.

We sat down with Naif Alkhairallah to get in depth with his debut novel, “Black Bonds.”

Where do you think your strength lies most: in illustration or storytelling? I have been getting positive feedback about my story telling skills, but I cannot take all the credit for that (although I would love to). My recent published work is a collaborative effort between Abdulrahman AlTamimi, who is a fantastic script writer, and myself. Your debut graphic novel grapples with the subject of sihr. What made you chose that as a topic? I love horror stories, we all grew up listening to stories about that cursed/bewitched cousin of our friends (that no one met). Any advice for aspiring Saudi graphic novelists?Follow what you love, do not try pleasing others, and don’t forget the basics.

I always wanted to read stories that are related to our culture, specially horror ones. At the same time, I enjoy stories that have a surprising turn of events. So I decided to write a comic book that combines both.

What pushed you to write it?Through social media networks I was introduced to the world of MEFCC where I met Khaleeji comic books artists, and that reignited my passion for drawing, and helped me decide to write my own comic book. This meant that I needed to polish my skills, I began teaching myself the correct drawing basis starting from the anatomy of human body reaching to the rules of drawing architectural perspective. I got so obsessed that I built my own comic cave (studio). It was built to serve several purposes: (A) providing the inspiring atmosphere as I am surrounded

EID CHIC from Day to Night

Professional makeup tips to rock your look this Eid.By Norah Al Eisa

Make sure to use sun protection, preferably an oil-free sunscreen so it won’t allow your makeup to slide off later on during the day.

For a dewy and long-lasting look, apply Stila’s All Day foundation and concealer. To set the concealer, go with yellow-toned setting powder to brighten up the under eye area.

For a dramatic sultry eye look, add a maroon color to your matte bronzy daytime shadow, with a bit of shimmer at the center of the lid (Colorpop Stereo 2). Add a jet black long-lasting gel liner to top it all off (Inglot no.77 gel liner).

LOOK 1

For a long-lasting contour, apply a cream contour and then a powder contour on top to set it all in place. Skip the eyeliner and apply black eye shadow instead for a soft daytime look.

Transform your look for night by adding a fun pop of color to the lips.

Professional makeup

artist Rasha Al Madhayan

To start off this matte look, spritz on a bit of Skindinavia’s oil control primer spray. This will control the shine and allow your makeup to last throughout the day. Achieve a

luminous matte finish to the skin by applying Dolce and Gabbanna’s full coverage foundation with a beauty blender.

Change up your look by swapping the pink lipstick for a red one instead (pro tip: go for a red lipstick with blue undertones, as it will make your teeth appear whiter).

Apply winged eyeliner and smudge it out for an instant glam cat eye.

EID GIFTS FOR YOU,

ME AND THEMBy Lama Ghazzawi

This type of person probably likes to buy brushes, paint, canvases and other things from Jarir Bookstore or an art supply store like Curio. Well, why don’t you just put all of those together in some creative wrapping and make their Eid? They will be inspired, thanks to you.

1. The Artistic One

2. The Musical OneEven on a great day, musicians find something they can do to improve their music. So, why not help them do just that? A really cool gift is a portable, high quality microphone they can use by simply connecting it to their laptops. You can find these gadgets at music stores like Virgin Megastore or Al Duwalia, or even online at cam4sell.com

Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with gifts when you know a lot of people. One thing you could do is get a nice basket and fill it with a bunch of mini bath items. Shower gels, creams and body scrubs are superb! Don’t forget, bath bombs exist too. Lush or Bath and Bodyworks are the places to go for these.

3. The NewlywedsWith Eid around the corner, you know you can hear the wedding bells! So, you’ll probably find yourself in a department store picking out some vase or dish set. Why don’t you try something creative that’ll really be remembered? You can order customized robes, glasses and even pillows online. It’s all about the signature.

We all have that one friend or relative that likes to take pride in their culture and heritage. It’s not very difficult to pick a gift for them, but it’s all abou being sincere and gifting them some high quality bakhoor or oud. Check out Sephora for some modern choices, or visit Abdulsamad AlQurashi for some REAL traditional scents.

5. The Traditional One

6. Something Light on the Pockets

4. The Grand Family GiftNow this one’s a bit tough. What can you get an entire family in one gift? Well, if you’ve got some cash to spare, I’m sure they’d love a family trip to Hawaii. Let’s be realistic, though. How about a nice family tree portrait? This can be a very creative project, or simply a printed picture. But how sweet is THAT?

While there’s a lot of Japanese restaurants to choose from in Riyadh, for this taste bud adventure, we’re leaning towards Yokari. Simply because it’s a restaurant that would appeal to those who don’t necessarily have a taste for sushi (although their selection is equally good).

For a healthy spin on Mexican food, Fire Grill is a brilliant place that’s got you covered. Their rice bowls and burritos make all the difference. They even sing you a cool song when you order a burrito. That’s what we call a fiesta!

Romano’s Macaroni Grill has been making a good argument for casual Italian dining in the city. The interiors give a nice homey Italian vibe that perfect for the family, with serving size to match.

Banana Chocolate Pops With children, the key to having them eat healthier is to get a little more creative. There is no easier way of jazzing up fruit than by adding a little chocolate. Use 70 percent cocoa to keep the sugar content down. Simply, skewer frozen bananas and dip them into whatever melted chocolate you like, and add sprinkles or nuts before the chocolate sets.Tip: Always have peeled bananas in the freezer for smoothies or quick snacks.

Fresh Fruit Popsicles During the warm months, enjoy these popsicles made with coconut water or lemonade and fresh organic fruit. Strawberry Yogurt BarkIt’s kind of fun to trick your children into thinking they’re eating something unhealthy; when in reality they’re getting decent nutrition. Fill a lined baking sheet with a thin layer of your preferred yogurt with cinnamon and honey for taste, and top it with dried strawberries or whatever toppings. Freeze for a few hours, we recommend eight hours, and break into chunks and serve while frozen.

Sand Pudding Nothing screams summer like a seaside retreat; give your children pods of their reimagined summer holiday, which can be simply made without fuss. Start with blitzing your favorite biscuits in the food processor, and layer them alternatively with pudding.

Apple and Peanut Butter Snails The eyes eat before the mouth, so why not play with kids’ creative imagination with a treat shaped like a snack? Below is a list of suggestions you can try to raise your metabolism.

EAT ENOUGHCutting down drastically on food intake can actually have an opposite effect, resulting in weight gain. When you consume less than your basic biological function (estimate of calories you need per day based on BMI), your body starts breaking down muscles for energy. So make sure you are eating the right amount of calories.

Lifestyle tips for burning fat quick and easy.

As we grow, our metabolism starts decreasing. This sounds depressing, but rest assured, there are actually numerous ways to fight this.

According to a Japanese study, caffeine is known to stimulate the nervous system, so that daily cup of coffee can actually help increase your metabolism by 5-8 percent and a cup of tea can raise itby 12 percent.

Iron is vital for carrying the oxygen your muscles need to burn fat; women, specifically, tend to lose iron each month due to menstruation. If you are not replenishing, then you run the risk of low energy and metabolism. Good sources of iron include lean meats, beans, shellfish and spinach.

Your body requires protein to maintain muscle mass. Protein increases post-meal calorie burn by 35 percent. Good sources of protein include legumes, nuts, fish and poultry.

Vitamin D is important for maintaining metabolism- revving muscle tissue. Many do not include adequate amounts in their diets. You can easily incorporate it by having salmon, tuna, shrimp, milk, cereal, tofu and eggs. Same goes for calcium deficiency; research shows that consuming calcium through dairy foods such as fat-free milk and low-fat yogurt helps reduce fat absorption from other foods.

Research suggests that pesticides can initiate weight gain; choose organic when purchasing vegetables and fruit, since the non-organic versions tend to have the highest levels of pesticides.

We are all working to get closer to Allah, to earn His love and pleasure, and inevitably His reward of paradise. It is only essential therefore, that we identify the characteristics that Allah loves in order to secure His affection.

Getting closer to Allah step by step.

QualitiesLOVED BY ALLAH Doing Good

Doing good is...well doing good. Whether it’s a kind word or a smile, whatever your definition, the result is always more love in the world.

“And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” (Al Baqarah 02:195)

Following the Prophet Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent as an example and guide; following him is taking the path to salvation.

“Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Aal-Imran 03:31)

“Allah loves those who purify themselves.”(Tawbah 09:108)

Those Who Have Taqwa (Piety) Being conscious of Allah at all times, knowing that He sees your every action and hears your every word, inspires one to do good.

“Indeed, Allah loves the Muttaqeen [those who fear Him, and are conscious of Him]. (Tawbah 09:04)

Those Who Put Their Trust in Him Alone Only Allah has full control over everything. Entrusting your affairs to Him implies that one acknowledges His

ultimate power, and thus humbles himself before Him.

“Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].” (Aal-Imran 03:159)

Justice Today justice is rarity. It is a noble character to possess and praiseworthy to acquire.

Indeed, Allah loves those who judge in equity. (Al-Maa’idah 05:42)Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. (Al-Hujurat 49:9)

Those Who Are Patient Patience is a virtue. It is. Patience strengthens one to get through the difficulties of life, to overcome obstacles and to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“And Allah loves those who are patient.” (Aal Imran 3:146)

3 Being RepentantBeing humans, we forget, and thus repentance is required. The Prophet informed us that Allah is happier with our repentance, than a dying man in the desert that comes upon a life-saving oasis. That’s how much Allah loves our turning back to Him.

“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant.” (Al-Baqarah 02:222)

Purity Being pure from errors by repenting and being clean from dirt by washing; Allah loves both. The Prophet taught us, ‘cleanliness is half of faith.’

TIPS AND TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR COOL

1. Understand That Anger is Not Strength

“The strong man is not the one who can wrestle, but it is the one who can control himself when he is angry.”

(Bukhari)

2. Follow the Sunnah a. Say "Audhu billahi min

positions when angry. If you are standing, then you should

sit. If the anger fails to subside, then you

should lie down. c. Remain silent and patient.

d. Make wudhu and pray two raka’as.

3. Be Empathetic People may be going through a rough time,

unknown to us. Always give the benefit of the doubt and

offer kindness in return.

4. Take a Few Minutes to Think Before blurting out words

or rashly acting, think about the consequences to avoid

MAY 18We landed in Genève’s airport and took a train straight to Montreux located on Lake Geneva (Lac Leman). The shoreline is famous for the annual Montreux Jazz Festival. We settled into Fairmont Le Montreux Hotel, a comfortable hotel perfect for international travelers. At the Montreux Jazz Café, dinner was accompanied by a view of the lake at night. We ate a delicious local fish topped with a drizzle of a lemon pepper sauce. The fish was served with a side of green mashed potato and an avocado sorbet salad. After dinner, we explored the sleeping Montreux’s historical streets while getting a sense of the city’s energy.

MAY 20We checked out from Fairmont and headed to Chillon Castle, an ancient floating Castle on the shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Leman).

The architecture on the islet was breathtaking. Walking through the halls we found ourselves admiring every pillar and detail. The castle also included exhibitions of weaponry and renovated murals.

After our dose of history we stopped at Montreux at le Palais Oriental for some Iranian cuisine. We were served a traditional platter mezzeh along with grilled meat over fragrant rice.

On the pier, we took a moment to appreciate Montreux before catching a boat to Lausanne. We revisited some of the city’s monuments and then greeted Lausanne.

We stopped for some coffee at the newly renovated Royal Savoy, and later had dinner at hotel Beau-Rivage’s restaurant, Café Beau-Rivage.

MAY 19After a pleasant breakfast at the hotel, we went to Vevey to visit the home where Charlie Chaplin spent the last 25 years of his life. His house opened to the public on the anniversary of his birthday on April 16 this year.

Today his house consists of the main house, the studio, the garage turned into a gift and souvenir shop, and a restaurant. Walking around the rooms of his house we came across relics of his personal and professional life. The walls were lined with screens showcasing his work along with lifelike wax figurines of some of the significant influencers in his life. We watched one of his short films in the theater and once it finished the screen lifted up to reveal his studio that contains original pieces from his sets.

Later we visited Vevey’s town market, which is the second biggest in Europe. Not too far, the world's biggest fork sticks out of the lake in front of Alimentarium, a food museum. A fulfilling dinner in Safran Montreux concluded our day.

MAY 21The weekend livened up the city, and the hustle and bustle of the residents gave us an intimate look at life in Lausanne. Every Wednesday and Saturday, people come to the downtown area to sell their goods. The hullabaloo of the marketplace created a fun atmosphere to shop in. The city’s personality is reflected in its many opportunities for shopping, especially in the posh street Rue de Bourg. After buying enough cattle figurines and chocolate we headed on to the culinary highlight of the trip.

Lunch was at the acclaimed restaurant Eat Me which offered a taste of various cultures. Each page in the menu represented a continent and each small-portioned dish was flavorful. The cozy ambience and delicious bites combined into a great dining experience.

MAY 22Our last day in Switzerland was dedicated to the Olympic tourism. The Olympic Museum showcases the vast history of the international sporting competition. One room was dedicated to the countries that have hosted the Olympics. Perhaps the best room of all was the one that displayed

Olympic torches from every Olympic event in history. The museum also commemorates the Greek history and culture behind the games. We ended the tour with a walk outside where statues of athletes stood tall. Later we ate brunch at TOM Café, which is situated at the top floor in the museum.

Treat the sea and sand lover in you.

As dusk strikes, the sun shines dimly, its weak rays reflect in the vast sea. The beach boasts of a sunset experience like no other near Jeddah, where neither boat nor watercraft obstructs the horizon. It’s just the sand and sea in front of us and grass and palm trees behind us with the winds slowly breezing past them, creating the most beautiful sounds.

close by run after their toddlers who seem to enjoy walking in the soft grass. This is a sight we saw while at Al Saif Beach.

We heard about this new beach that opened fairly recently in 2015 a while ago. But now after hearing its reviews we couldn’t wait any longer and decided to visit. Someone told us that we could swim so we got our swimming gear along with us.

Despite opening without much fanfare, we found Al Saif Beach crowded. In Jeddah when a new attraction opens, somehow the entire city knows about it within days.

Google Maps has it listed as “Sword Beach,” a literal translation of Al Saif. If one starts asking or searching for Sword Beach they won’t find it anywhere except on Google Maps. All signboards leading

Page 87: DR Issue 41

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83

up to the place have it written as Al Saif Beach and Jeddawis know the beach as that as well.Speaking of signboards we came across plenty of them on the way, especially after reaching King Faisal Road. The road is filled with warehouses and factories and we passed hoards of them on our way. An interesting thing I saw here was the solar powered streetlights, something I haven’t seen in any place in the country before. Though they were not the best looking they were definitely the most eco-friendly ones out there.

We followed the signboards and reached South Corniche; a place anglers prefer over Al Saif Beach. From South Corniche we continued to head south following Corniche Road and went round a thermal power plant.

DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83

Page 88: DR Issue 41

DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 201684

After the power plant it was another 5-minute drive, and there was Al Saif Beach, neatly laid out with palm trees flanking the main road. The total distance of the beach from downtown Jeddah is around 55 kilometers and it took us less than an hour to reach.

Parking was a hassle, but we eventually found a spot. The

swimming gear wasn’t of much use as the water was only knee-high and the waves were negligible; no wonder it was mostly filled with children. An excellent spot for the young ones to learn swimming, as the sand beneath is

Page 89: DR Issue 41

extremely soft and no stones or algae whatsoever are found at the beach. Plus the beach is surprisingly clean considering the numbers it sees, especially if we consider what happened to Jeddah’s Corniche only days after reopening, where one would find plastics and all sorts of garbage seaside.

What we enjoyed most at the beach was walking in the shallow waters, the soft sand dispersed with every step we took making the seawater look murky. The experience of duskhere deserves a mention on its own; pristine – to put it in one word. A place where you can get a book or drink a fine cup of tea while watching the sun set into the vast seas ahead of you.

Since there isn’t any habitation or makeshift kiosks nearby it’s best to get all your supplies from Jeddah. There are even huts available for families who want that extra bit of privacy; we didn’t find many using them though. A makeshift mosque is available at sight

along with many restrooms that one comes across while walking by the beach. On the whole it is an ideal picnic spot for families, be it barbeques or weekend gatherings.

HISTORIC KSA Ruins that evoke an ineffable charm.By Mohammed Mirza

The First Seaport Of Arabia

The port is built on the ancient village of Uqair, the village that has seen ships sail from its waters and reach Persia, India and parts of China. Some historians believe it to be the oldest seaport in the country.

Sitting 40 kilometers from the city of Hofuf, for centuries Uqair Port was a major trading center for the Al Ahsa region. However, the structure that we see today dates back to the recent late 19th and the early 20th century, built by the Ottomans.

The customs building is the most significant historic structure still standing at Uqair. Once goods were cleared, they would be sold or transported via camels to other parts of Arabia.

Uqair Port played its most prominent role after the establishment of the Saudi state. It is also where King

Abdulaziz signed the famous Uqair Protocol in 1922 with the British.

The port continued to flourish, till about 1945 after which it dropped off the map, a result of the new seaport constructed in Dammam to meet the growing demand for Saudi oil. The seaport at Dammam

was a more feasible option for oil exporters as it was located closer to the oil base.

The seaport is currently closed, with plans to develop it and revive the town of Uqair; making it a tourism hub under the ambitious Uqair Development Project.
