The D&R Canal between Trenton & Bordentown
The D&R Canal between Trenton and Bordentown is a very fun and interesting 5mile ride.
The trail is part of the Delaware River Heritage Trail which, when completed will be a
circuit linking Trenton to Palmyra on the Jersey side, utilize the TaconyPalmyra Bridge to
connect with the East Coast Greenway in Pennsylvania and follow that north to Morrisville
and loop back to Trenton via the Calhoun St Bridge.
Unfortunately, following the trail isnt exactly obvious. There are a couple of points where
you need to use clues to proceed forward. The clues vary whether you are traveling north
or south. The first half of this document provides the visual signs for traveling south; if you are traveling north jump to
page 6 of this document.
Traveling from Trenton south to Bordentown starting at
The South River Walk Park the park built over Rt 29 just
south of Trenton Thunders Waterfront Park. (For mapping
purposes you can use Lalor St & Lamberton St, Trenton, NJas a reference point.) Proceeding to the southernmost
point in the park, via the red brick path, you will see:
Proceed toward the Delaware River and you will find a gate
that leads to a ramp (it is 0.2 mile from the corner of
Lamberton & Lalor to this point):

Traveling north from Bordentown to Trenton starting at the corner of Cortland St & Farnsworth Av:
Proceed down the steep hill very carefully. There is an active railroad crossing at the bottom of the hill (< 0.1 mile).
Just beyond the tracks is a sidewalk nestled between the
railroad tracks and Bordentown Yacht Club parking lot.
Follow the sidewalk, across the boardwalk bridge over the Crosswicks Creek, to a path (0.16 mile):

If you are interested in connecting with the other portion of the
D&R Canal, my preferred route is to take Lamberton St two blocks
to Landing St, (turn right), take Landing St one block and turn left
onto Centre St. Follow Centre St to just about the end at Broad St.
Just before Centre and Broad meet there is a Y. Stay to the right
and then go straight across Broad to Greenwood. (See the 206
insignia on the map to the right.) Proceed up Greenwood to
Jackson St (turn left).
Cross Market St, continue to follow Jackson St around a bend in the
road, down the hill and veer left to pick up S. Montgomery St. (See
map below.)
Hop the curb; follow the
walkway to Front St and
pickup Montgomery St.
Proceed north a few blocks to the D&R Canal (after Front, you will cross State,
Hanover, Academy, Perry, and
Allen reference map to right):
To your right is north and New
Brunswick.
To your left is the feeder canal that
leads north to Frenchtown.
Happy trails!
