Choosing to live with us in University accommodation may just be the best decision you’ve ever made! Not only do you get a brilliant package, support if you need it, security, exceptional facilities and no worries about bills. You also get THE best experience ever – the chance to meet new people, try loads of new things and make memories that that will last a lifetime.

WHAT TO ExPECT

For some of you, coming to university will be a whole new experience, but don’t worry. You can expect a warm welcome at your accommodation over Intro Weekend – there’ll be loads of people around to help and some fantastic events and activities planned to help you settle in.

HERE TO HELP

Accommodation & Campus Services (ACS) is the University department responsible for looking after accommodation. We’re here to make sure your transition into university life is as easy as possible, as well as being a responsible landlord. During your stay, you’ll meet lots of people from ACS:

Accommodation OfficeThis team allocated your

room and Accommodation Contract – contact them for anything relating to your Contract. They can also offer advice and information about your

accommodation options for future years – remember,

you can stay in University accommodation for the duration of your course! Don’t forget!

We emailed you a link to your E-induction when you accepted your Accommodation Contract.

It’s essential that you complete the induction as it contains loads of important information about your accommodation – and you’ll be able to book a time slot for arriving and collecting your keys!

Customer ServicesThe team are responsible for lots of different things and are based at the receptions in The Edge, The Ridge and Tapton Hall. (There is also a Customer Reception for Opal Two, which is not operated by ACS).

Resident SupportHere to offer support and help if you need it – find out more on p.10.

Security ServicesHelp to monitor the safety and security of the Student Villages and Campus, 24/7.

PortersProvide assistance for a wide range of tasks, from assisting Security Services to providing Customer Services support out of hours.

HousekeepingProvide a cleaning service for communal areas in some accommodation.

MaintenanceRespond to maintenance faults that are recorded through the Maintenance Helpdesk.

Over Intro Weekend there will be lots of other people around to help you to find your way, assist with your belongings and answer any questions – some are even students so they know exactly how you’ll be feeling!

To find out more about moving in, visit: www.shef.ac.uk/accommodation/arriving09

There'll be so much for you to think about on the day, but the most important thing is getting to your room and settling into your new home. Here are some tips for what to expect over Intro Weekend and what you'll need to do when you get here.

Moving in top tips

1Make sure you check the directions to your accommodation, key collection point, opening hours and car parking locations before you set off.

23

4

We can’t wait for you to arrive!

67

89

Double check your time slot for arriving and collecting your keys

– you’ll choose this when you complete your E-induction once you’ve accepted your contract.

It will be busy on the roads as there are thousands of students arriving in Sheffield at the same time - please be patient with the traffic, you will get here and your room will be waiting for you!

Check the car parking

instructions for your specific

location.

Welcome to Sheffield

If your family and friends want to stay a bit longer, you may have to move your car – although you might want them to leave so you can get on with meeting your new flatmates!

Remember to bring a copy of your Accommodation Contract and

proof of ID with you – we need it to be able to issue your keys.

5Once you have collected your keys, make your way to your room – there will be lots of people around to help direct you and give you a hand with your luggage.

Once you’ve settled into your room, it’s time to meet your

flatmates and get to know your Community – there are loads of activities and events planned to welcome you. Find out more on

the listings pages (p.12-15).

You might also want to register for your University computer account, which means you can access the internet from your bedroom. There’ll be registration centres in the Information Commons and The Edge over Intro Weekend.

Your environment

Did you know that over 1 billion people in the world don’t have access to clean water?

October is Water Month at the University of Sheffield and we need your help to reduce the water consumption of the University, its Union and residences. There will be plenty of tips, activities and events throughout the month to help you start saving water and get involved in the campaign. A percentage of the water saving will go to the worthwhile charity OneWater which provides water roundabouts to communities in Africa. So take the plunge in October and help save water.

Visit: www.shef.ac.uk/water-amnesty for more information

We’re committed to looking after the environment and will be doing everything we can to save energy in the residences… and there are loads of things that you can do too!

Don’t over fill your kettle – only boil the amount you needIf everyone only boiled the amount of water they needed instead of filling the kettle every time, we could save enough energy to run all the street lights in the UK!

Switch your lights off when you’re out of the roomIf you switched off lights that you don’t need for only an hour a day, you could save enough energy to power your TV every evening!

Don’t leave appliances on standbyIf we all turned off our gadgets at the plug, we could save 4 million tonnes of excess Carbon Dioxide every year!

Take a five minute showerBy cutting a minute off your shower time, you could save about 3,300 litres of water a year, saving 200kWh of energy - or enough to heat water for 6000 cups of coffee.

Recycle all recyclable goods*Every tonne of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees, 34,500 litres of water and over a tonne and a half of Co2.

*There are recycling bins in most properties and bring sites in each location, so it couldn’t be easier for you to do your bit.

YoUR BIT!

Hello from your Welfare Officer!Hi, I’m Jenni, this year’s Welfare Officer. Firstly, welcome to your new home! Living in University accommodation is great - you get all the freedom of living away from home, but with the peace of mind that you have a team of staff to support you if you get into any difficulties.

There’s always something going on in the residences,

from volunteering opportunities to themed nights in the bar, so you really won’t be stuck for ways to fill your time.

Student life can be amazing, however this doesn’t mean that it’s always plain sailing. It’s important to know that there’s someone to turn to if things get tough and that there’s an excellent support system within your residences, the union, and the University itself.

As your Welfare Officer, I’m also here to help if things aren’t

going well. Hopefully I’ll be able to point you in the right direction and help ensure that you have an amazing time, both in your student accommodation, and also in general student life.

Please feel free to get in touch with me ([email protected]) or pop into my office (in the Students’ Union) for a chat.

Have a great year!

Residential Mentors

BLOCK WELCOMEYou’ll get to meet your Residential Mentor, along with all the other Mentors in your Community at your Block Welcome over Intro Week. It’ll also be a great opportunity to get to know other students in your block!

WHAT DO WE DO?The Resident Support team are here to help you settle in, look after your wellbeing and support you with any welfare, accommodation, academic or personal issues you may be having.

Whether you’re homesick, are struggling with your course or are having personal problems, don’t feel that you have to solve it alone. We’re trained to provide advice and support and were once first years too, so we know that it can sometimes take a while to get used to life in a new city or country.

a minute with your Mentor

Name: Huichi Yeh

Where you live and blocks you cover: I live in The Endcliffe Village and cover Burbage blocks D2-F4.

Course and year of study: PhD in East Asian Studies, 4th year.

What’s the best thing about doing the job? The best thing is being able to meet loads of new people, whilst also gaining valuable experience of working within the University. I’ve also got great flatmates – they’re really friendly and we all get along well.

What’s the worst thing about being a Mentor? The odd situation involving drunken students in the middle of the night can be quite trying! However, I know that students are here to have a good time as well as study, so it is to be expected and we are trained to deal with that type of thing.

Do you have any interesting hobbies? I enjoy travelling, watching movies and going out with my friends.

Tell us about a typical shift. A typical shift is 6 hours long, working between 6pm and 12am. I’m then on call between 12am and 6am.

6-7pmI’m on duty at The Edge Hub for an hour so that students can come and chat to me, ask questions, or discuss any problems they are having.

7-10pmI pop round to visit the students who I am responsible for in their accommodation. It’s great to be able to see how they’re getting on and help them with any difficulties or problems they might be having. I often stay for a chat or a cuppa and the time passes really quickly!

10-12pmDuring the last part of my shift I patrol the accommodation, responding to any complaints and making sure the students are being good neighbours by keeping the noise down!

What’s your favourite thing about living in University accommodation? If there were any problems with my accommodation such as maintenance or utilities, ACS were quick to respond and deal with any problems. Also, living in University accommodation provided me with the security that I would not have had in accommodation on my own.

What do you like most about living in Sheffield? As I’m a postgraduate student, I’ve largely had to focus on my studies and I haven’t had the freedom to enjoy the student life here as much as I would have liked. However, the shopping and socialising in Sheffield is great!

KEEP IT DOWN!As well as providing welfare support and advice, we also deal with disciplinary issues. So if your flatmates are being too noisy late at night (or you’re the one making too much noise!), we’ll help sort it out.

We’re here to help you get along with our neighbours in the local community – so remember to be respectful when you’re coming home late by

keeping the noise down and following the dedicated green routes.

WHEN WE’RE AVAILABLE

We’re on duty between 6pm and 12am every evening during term and are on call between 12am and 6am if you need us. We’ll be out and about around the accommodation from 7pm or you can come and see us between 6pm and 7pm at The Ridge, Tapton and Opal Two receptions and at The Edge Hub.
