    Whatdobananas,thetallestgravityfedfountainintheworld,andtheCrystalPalacehaveincommon?TheywereallcreatedbyJosephPaxton,thenoted19thcenturygardenerofChatsworthHouse.The150thanniversaryofhisdeathiscommemoratedbythisyearsDerbyCityCharterBeerFestival.AlthoughPaxtonwasnotanativeofDerby,mostofhisworkandhiscleverinventionswerecarriedoutwhilehewasemployedbythe6thDukeofDevonshiretodevelopthegardensatChatsworth.Paxtonwasbornin1803toahumblefarmingfamilyinBedfordshireandstartedhisworkinglifeasagardenboyfortheimprobablynamedSirGregoryPageTurner.HefirstcametotheattentionoftheDukeofDevonshirewhileworkingatthenewHorticulturalSocietyGardensinChiswick.InneedofanewheadgardeneratChatsworth,theDukeofferedPaxtonthejob,althoughhewasonly23.Paxtonsoonsettledinmarryingthehousekeepersniece,SarahBrownandbecameheavilyinvolvedinmorethanjustthegarden.Hetookoverresponsibilityfortheforestry,theestateroadsandeventuallyhetookontheroleoftheDukesagentatChatsworth.Hewasaningeniousproblemsolveranddesigner.In1844,hecreatedtheworldshighestgravityfedfountain,TheEmperorFountainatChatsworth,standingtwiceastallasNelsonsColumnandstilloperationaltoday.Onobservingthestructureofagiantwaterlilyherealisedthattheradialsupportsunderneath

  • JOSEPHPAXTON(1803 1865)gavetheleafthestrengthtogrowtoanenormoussize.Hetesteditsloadbearingqualitybysittinghisyoungdaughterontop.Thisgavehimtheideaofusingacastironradialstructuretosupporttheglassforanoversizedgreenhouse.ThegreatconservatoryatChatsworthwasthefirstcastironandglassbuildingofanimpressivesize.Withcontinuedexperimentation,PaxtonperfectedhisironandglassconstructionmethodinhisdesignfortheCrystalPalaceinLondonfortheGreatExhibitionof1851.WhilestillworkingfortheDuke,Paxtondevelopedaninterestinthemodernformoftransportofthetime,thetrain.HebecameoneofthedirectorsoftheMidlandRailwayinDerbyin1848.Asifthatwasnotenough,hepublishedandeditedseveralhorticulturalmagazines.Hedesignedcemeteriesforthenewlydevelopingurbancentresandplannedpublicparksforusebytheinhabitantsofgrowingtowns,includingtheacclaimedBirkenheadPublicPark.Somehow,healsomanagedtofindthetimetoserveasaLiberalMPforCoventryfrom1854untilhisdeathin1865.Andthebananas?Beinganotoriouslydifficultfruittopropagate,Paxtonworkedhardtodevelopafruitingvariety,MusaCavendishiiorthedwarfCavendishbanana,whichwashardyandsuitableforgrowinginnewlydevelopingplantationsaroundtheworld.Todaythe140millionbananaseatenintheUKandallthemillionsofotherbananasgrownworldwidearelikelytobedescendedfromPaxtonsoriginalplant.SosetasidesometimetoraiseaglasstoSirJosephPaxton,gardener,inventor,writer,publisher,businessmanandpolitician.Cheers!

  • ABOUTREALALEIfyourenotusedtorealale,youmightfindthechoiceatthebeerfestivalalittlebewildering.Youcouldbedrinkingsomethingthatsnotentirelytoyourtasteandbewonderingwhatthefussisallabout.Thatstheproblemwithchoice.Thereisahugerangeoftastesinrealales,farmorethaninwines,andyoumayfindonethatsnotforyou.Mostrealaledrinkershaveapreferenceforaparticularstyleofbeer.Stickwithit.Thebeerdescriptionsinthisprogrammewillgiveyouaclueastowhatyoumightlike.Thebarstaffmaybeabletoadviseonthebeersintheirsection.Rememberthatstrongestdoesnotmeanbestmanyrealaledrinkersprefertostartontheweakerbrews.Onceyouhavefoundsomethingthatyouaregettingonwith,lookforbeerswithsimilardescriptions;hopefullyyouwillsoonhituponyourpersonalcracker.Butwhatisrealale?Simplyitisbeerfromwhichairisnotexcludedbycarbondioxideorothergasses,andwhichcanmatureinthecask.Forthisreasonitsflavourcanbebroughttoahigherlevelbytheskillofthecellarperson.Unfortunately,itsflavourcanberuinedbylackofcare.Ifyougetabadpint,takeitback,mostgoodpubsandthisfestivalwonthesitatetoofferareplacement.Kegbeerispasteurisedandcannotmatureinthecellar,isnoticeablygassier,andisusuallyservedmuchcolder(oftentomasktheflavour,orlackofit).HowdoIknow?Unlessitisservedstraightfromthecask,lookforthesymbolofrealale,thehandpump.Ifthepersonbehindthebarisdoingnomorethanflippingoveralittletap,itsveryprobablynotrealale(electricpumpdispensemaybefoundinScotland,butisbecominguncommon).RealAleisgenerallyonlyavailableinpubs.Itswhatmakessomepubsreallyspecial.YoucanfindrealalepubswiththeotherfacilitiesandfeaturesyouwantusingtheCAMRAWhatPubwebsite(seethearticleelsewhereintheprogrammeforfurtherinformation).

  • CHOOSINGABEERANDBEERSTYLESThisyearwehavesourcedanotherfantasticrangeofales,withafocusonbeersfromScottishbreweries.Manyofthesebeersarenormallyverydifficult,ifnotimpossible,tofindintheDerbyarea.Youwillalsofindagoodrangeofbeersfromlocalbreweries,andsomeunusualbeersfromelsewhereintheUnitedKingdom.Withover150beerstochoosefromyoucouldgetconfused,butfindingabeeryoulikeispartofthefunofabeerfestival.Therangeincludesfruity,hoppy,floral,andtoffeenotes,sobrowsearound.Eachbeerhasanindividualcharactercomingfromthevarietyofhops,malt,andevenwaterused.Usethebeerlistdescriptionasaguideandifyourestillnotsureaboutabeer,justaskthebarstafftogiveyouataste.Ingeneralitisbesttoworkupfromweakerbeerstothestrongerbrews.Beerstrengthismeasuredasapercentageofthealcoholbyvolume(ABV).Aguidetothemostcommonlyfoundbeerstylesisgivenbelow;thelettersinbracketsshowthetypeofbeerintheprogramme.Pleasenotethatintheinterestsofresponsibledrinking,beerswithanABVofover6.5%willnotbeservedinpintmeasures.Bitter(B)orBestBitter(BB)ModernbittersareacommercialversionoftheexportpaleorIndiaPaleAles(seebelow).Theyrangefrom3.5to5.5%ABV.Thebitternessstemsfromtheirhighhoprate.Insomecasestheyarealsodryhopped(wherehopsareaddedtoacaskimmediatelypriortodelivery).Theyaregenerallycoppercolouredduetotheuseofpalemaltsbuttherehasbeenarecenttrendforlighterorgoldenbeers(q.v.),especiallyforthesummertrade.Thesetendtobelightintastewithafresh,cleanpalate.IndiaPaleAles(IPA)areclassicallystronger(circa5.5%ABV)andwellhopped(e.g.WorthingtonWhiteShield).GoldenAles(G)Thisnewstyleofpale,wellhoppedandthirstquenchingbeerdevelopedinthe1980sasindependentbrewersattemptedtowinyoungerdrinkersfromlagerbrands.Mostmicrosandregionalsnowmaketheirownversionsofthestyle.Goldenalesarepaleamber,gold,yelloworstrawcolouredandareservedcool.Strengthsrangefrom3.5to5.5%.Theyhaveabiscuitycharacterderivedfrompalemalts,withhopsgivingatartcitrusfruitandpepperfinish,oftenwithhintsofvanillaandcornflour.

  • ABOUTDERBYCAMRATheDerbyBranchofCAMRAhasaround2,500members,makingitoneofthelargestinthecountry.ThisfestivalisorganizedandrunentirelybyvolunteersfromtheDerbyandneighbouringbranches.Wedovirtuallyeverything,fromhiringthemarquees,tochoosingandorderingthebeers,gettingthemreadytodrink,staffingthebars,hiringthebands,andcontractingthecatering.Itsamassiveeffort,requiringabout350unpaidvolunteers.

    Whydowedoit?Theanswerissimple,becauseweenjoyit.DerbyCAMRAisasociablebunchofpeople;weenjoythework,weenjoythechallengeandweenjoytheextendedfriendshipsofworkingtogether.

    Andthisappliestoallthemanyandvariedthingswedo.Butwerealwayslookingformorepeopletojoinin.Peopleofalltypes,backgroundsandages;theonlyqualificationsarealoveofgreatalesandciders,andenthusiasm.

    Weneedpeoplewholikemeetingpeople.Peoplewhowillvisitpubs,talktolandlords,anddistributeourpublicationsandleaflets.Weneedpeoplewithcreativetalents:writing,editing,photography,graphicdesign.Weneedpeoplewithpracticalskillstohelpsetupbeerfestivals,plumbincoolingsystems,buildbars.WeneedITgurusandsocialmediaexperts.Weneedorganizersandmanagers,peoplewhocanunderstandaccountsordevelopmarketingstrategies.
