DEEP LEARNING is…
…a marketing term(of course).
But not a bad one so long as you know that…
…“deep” doesn’t mean “profound”
and
“learning” doesn’t mean there’s someone who
learns
“Deep” means “our calculation network has lots of layers” [lots: ≥ 3 or 4]
“Learning” means “given more data, our algorithm will update (hopefully, improve) its calculations”
Machine Learning is like the “fitting a line through dots” that you did in school maths or
science
…but when you get more data, you fit a better line…
… and then you learn how to fit lines through ever
more complicated sets of dots …

… and in thousands of dimensions, not just two…
…until one day you can “fit a line” through sets of dots as complex as a set of photographs…
…and find you’ve fit a face!
“deepness” is about layers of “hierarchical feature learning”:
1. Learn to see dark/light contrasts & edges, given only pixels2. Then, see simple shapes given only (1)3. Then more complex shapes made out of (2)4. …continue for X layers
—this is the deep bit— …5. Until—hey presto!—you can see faces
layer 1…
…etc…layer 2…

How can I get started?
Oh, by the way…
Unbiased Algorithms?
I’m sorry Davina, I’m afraid I can’t do that…
You see, I can only learn from the faces of the gender and skin colour I was shown…
@chrisfcarrollwww.cafe-encounter.netYou saw? Good. Goodbye.
