Making the Decorative Side of the Cards 1. Insert a New Slide. Go the Insert-New Slide in the Menu Bar.

Change the slide layout to Title and Content. Type in a title for your game.

2. Change the Slide Background.

I like to change the slide background to a color other than white. This makes it harder for opponents to see the content on another player’s cards. Go to Format-Slide Background in the Menu Bar.

Look through the categories, click on the image you want, and click the blue Insert button.

4. Viewing and Duplicating Slides.

We will need a decorative slide for each content slide we have. I find it easiest to duplicate the slides in the slide sorter view. You can use the Slide Sorter View to see all of your flash cards at one time. Either go to View-Slide Sorter in the Menu Bar or click on the Slide Sorter icon in the bottom left-hand side of the screen. Click on the decorative slide to select it. Click Insert-Duplicate Slide in the Menu Bar. Create a decorative slide for each content slide you have.

5. Moving Slides

Once in the Slide Sorter view you can click and drag slides to new locations within the PowerPoint.

Slides 1-6 should be content slides. Slides 7-12 should be decorative. Follow this pattern of 6 for the rest of the slides.

6. Printing Click File-Print in the Menu Bar. Change Print What from Slides to Handouts.

Page 10: Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids · Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids Susan Prabulos, ... Flashcards)) 1. ... Select the Click to add

I selected Handouts (6 slides per page). A simple way to print on both sides of the paper is to print page 1 (first six slides) and then flip it over and put it back in the printer and print page 2 (slides 7-12). I like to print these on cardstock and laminate them. **If you have a duplex printer you can print on both sides of the page at the same time…content on one side and decorative on the other.

3. Adding AutoShapes. First, decide on the shape you want the tiles of the board game to be. PowerPoint offers a variety of shapes, which include, squares, circles, hexagons, and more. For this example, I will be using squares. Go to Insert-Picture-AutoShapes in the Menu Bar. A small toolbar will appear. Click on the first button and select the square shape. Your mouse will turn into a plus sign. You can click and drag to create a square or if you simply click the mouse a square will appear.

4. Changing an AutoShape. Auto shapes will default to having a gradient blue color, blue outline, and a shadow. I almost always change the AutoShape to fit my design needs. Double-click on the AutoShape you created to format it.

5. Creating Duplicate AutoShapes. Click on the AutoShape you created to select it. Click Edit-Copy in the Menu Bar to copy the shape.

Side Note: You can also use keyboard shortcuts to Copy and Paste! Mac:

Then click Edit-Paste in the Menu Bar to make a duplicate shape.

Click and drag to move the shapes around the slide. You can also click to select a shape and then use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move it around the slide.

Have fun designing your game layout. You can always do the basic rectangle shape…but kids love it when game boards take different twists and turns.

6. Moving to a second slide.

Once you are done laying out the first slide you will want to make sure everything lines up on the second slide.

Here is my first slide layout completed. I need to copy the last shape I placed on the board. When you copy this shape you are also copying its location.

Page 14: Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids · Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids Susan Prabulos, ... Flashcards)) 1. ... Select the Click to add

Click on the last shape and then click Edit-Copy in the Menu Bar.

Create a second slide by clicking Insert-New Slide in the Menu Bar.

Once you are on the new slide click Edit-Paste in the Menu Bar. The shape will be in exactly the same location it was on the first slide.

Page 15: Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids · Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids Susan Prabulos, ... Flashcards)) 1. ... Select the Click to add

15 http://www.thedigitalscoop.com/

Click on the shape and use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move it over to the opposite side of the slide.

Click Format-Slide Background in the Menu Bar.

You will see buttons to change the color, add a gradient, or add a picture.

I am going to create an ocean theme for this board so I will change the background to blue.

Make sure to click Apply To All so the background color goes onto both slides.

The slides now have a blue background.

Select a style you like and click on it. A text box will appear in the center of the slide. Type in the title you would like for your game. You can resize the title just like you would resize normal text.

There are many other ways you can enhance and change Word Art. Try double-clicking the text box of the Word Art you inserted to get creative.

9. Adding Clip Art.

Clip art and graphics are probably the most important part of creating an engaging game board.

PowerPoint comes with a small amount of clip art. You can also access the Online Microsoft Image Gallery to find more choices. See the section of this handout entitled Online Sources for more instructions.

Go to Insert-Clip Art in the Menu Bar. The Clip Art Gallery will open.

Add an additional 15 bullet points for a total of 20 game spaces.

6. Adding Text Use the Text Pane to add text to the game spaces. Each bullet point corresponds to a game space. Type the word Start next to the first bullet.

Page 21: Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids · Creating Engaging Printable Learning Activities for Kids Susan Prabulos, ... Flashcards)) 1. ... Select the Click to add

The word start should also show up in the first game space.

This feature is great for making vocabulary-based games! Note: Any tiles with [Text] on them will print blank. You can also just enter a space next to those bullet points to clear the tiles. 7. Changing Colors and Styles

Styles allow you to easily change the color and look of SmartArt graphics. They can be found in the Formatting Palette.

I like to have the PowerPoint Drawing Toolbar open when I am working. This allows me to quickly add AutoShapes, add images and clipart and format items. To open the drawing tools, click View-Toolbars-Drawing in the Menu Bar. The Drawing Tools will appear on the left of the work area.

Create Your Own Shapes I discovered this trick when I made a Pond themed game. I wanted the game tiles to look like lily pads. Start by accessing the Lines button in the Drawing Toolbar.

Click on the Curve Line tool. Start by drawing a straight line and then “curving it. Continue around the shape until you close the shape.
