Commonbutterflies of

REGUAWorldwide there are about 160,000 species of Lepidoptera(moths and butterflies) of which the 20,000 butterflies are splitinto five families: Hesperiidae, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae,Papilionidae, Pieridae and Riodinidae.

Brazil has over 3,000 butterfly species of which almost 1,000can be found in the Atlantic Rainforest, and over 570 have beenrecorded at REGUA and the surrounding area. However thereare still many more to find, and it is likely that the final total willbe around 700-800 species, perhaps even approaching the 900species recorded at Itatiaia.

For amateurs, the identification is severely hampered by theabsence of good field guides, but this leaflet illustrates 54 of thecommoner and more easily identified species that can be foundthroughout most of the year around the REGUA wetlands andtrails.

REGUA is keen to establish a comprehensive list of speciespresent and their flight times, so please submit your records andphotographs to Jorge Bizarro ([email protected]).
