AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT BODY OF MORE THAN 100 NATIONALITIES SPEAKING MORE THAN 50 LANGUAGES

Message from the President

Dear graduating students, parents and friends, distinguished guests, faculty and staff members,

First of all:Congratulations to the class of 2010. You made it!

Our graduates are from now on our ambassadors. You are part of the European University Alumni Family. Throughout your studies, you depended on us. Now we depend on you to capitalize on the synergy that we have created together.

Commencement is a very important day in your lives. It means that through your courage and commitment you have achieved your goal: to be and not to have a degree, to be a Bachelor or a Master!

Academic year 2009–2010 was a milestone in the European University success story: we were proud to announce international accreditation by ACBSP and IACBE.

Looking to the future, European University will approach 2010–2011 with a key formula:

Integrity x Authenticity = Reputation

Integrity stands for a combination of the following core values: Honesty, Transparency, Loyalty, Respect and Trust.xAuthenticity means to stay true to your origins, reflect the values you relate and makes your success.=Reputation is how the world perceives you. Your reputation will be enhanced by a socially responsible attitude.

So you, the graduates, belong to the next generation. You are the ‘millennials’. Your parents and I already belong to the past generation. But both generations have something in common: they share common values. Values such as commitment, belief, passion, success, tact, sincerity, tolerance, patience and transparency remain the same over decades.

Thank you for believing in EU and for your confidence, trust and generosity. Thank you for the moments of fun and excellence you have brought us. These are great gifts you have given us. Through your spirit, our faculty and staff will remain always young.

I wish you Good Luck and Bon Voyage on your exciting new journey and look forward to seeing you on our Alumni Grid webpage www.alumni.euruni.edu. At European University, you are always welcome.

EU BARCELONACommencement Ceremony 12 June 2010

EU Barcelona

European University Barcelona’s 2010 Com-mencement Ceremony honored over 200 graduates and 400 guests in the exclusive Pullman Barcelona Skipper Hotel. The annual event took place on 12 June 2010 and was also attended by EU Alumni chapter heads and students from across the European and Asian campus networks. The festive occasion was introduced by EU Professor of Finance Dr. Cristina Tomás i Pérez who welcomed the commencement procession and guests and dedicated the event to the success of the students.

Dr. Tomás i Pérez then introduced the first guest of honor, CEO at TSM Business School and Chairman of the Dutch Associa-tion of Business Schools, Dr. Ivo Matser who chose to approach the audience with an insightful speech on entrepreneurship. Using the history of entrepreneurship to illustrate the current modern era of rapid and cease-less change, he highlighted growth industries, including solar energy, looking forward to a future where healthcare and consumer goods will be more readily available and energy greener. He related that industry and not poli-tics will drive this new technological watershed, and urged students to focus on social issues in order to tackle the current global ecological and economic crises. Dr. Matser advocated that they must rise to this challenge, to make a difference individually and collectively with passion, direction and creativity: to move into the future with the skills that European Univer-sity has taught them.

EU President Dr. Dirk Craen then addressed students and commencement guests. He underlined the contrast of this generation of “millennials”, the multitaskers and social networkers, with his own generation, reflect-ing that despite rapid change the values of friendship, loyalty, transparency and respect will always retain their significance. He added that as graduates they be socially responsible, humble, invest in themselves, take courage in failure and be lifelong learners. He concluded with the EU code of conduct (see page 6).

Highlights from Dr. Craen’s speech

“The ‘Millennials’ are their parent’s greatest protégés and proudest creations”

“You communicate at lightening speed within your social networks.”

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS

Dr. Ivo Matser was born in 1961 on the day of the first manned space flight and this inventiveness seems to have inspired him throughout his life. He studied Economics at the Dutch Universiteit van Tilburg, and from there he moved to the UK to advance his professional career. He pursued programs of Executive Education at the University of Hertfordshire before graduating with a M.Sc. in Quality Management from the University of Lincoln in 1995. It was during this latter period of study that he was Managing Director for Brinkman Associates and then Director of Management at Ivo Matser Consultancy BV.

Despite working in business environments and knowledge intensive companies, Dr. Matser has always had ties with higher education through membership and supervisory board functions in The Netherlands and abroad and in 2001 he moved into Business Education.

It was in 2003 that he was appointed to CEO at TSM Business School in the central Dutch city of Appledorn. To this post he brought his desire to create an environment where creativity, inventiveness and perseverance are prominent and also where innovation, flexibility and sustainable development can flourish.

TSM is an international business school where students can develop their leadership and entrepreneurial skills and where personal responsibility, cooperation and sustainability are cultivated.

Dr. Matser is also a fluent and well-informed guest speaker in the field of entrepreneurship, reflected at TSM which is an excellent example of national and international entrepreneurship.

He currently combines his work at TSM with the Chairmanship of the Dutch Association of Business Schools and is a partner of the European Leadership Platform. He is a member of the Executive board of the Foundation of Technology and Marketing, the Supervisory Boards of Quintis Holding, Brabant Business School and the Foundation for Management Development in Nijmegen.

Harry John was born in 1965 in Leukerbad, a spectacular Rhône Valley village located in the southern Swiss canton of Valais. Growing up in this ski resort and mountain climbing center that also boasts the largest thermal spa and wellness facility in the Swiss Alps directed him towards his future vocation.

He went to college in Brigue and from there he moved on to finish his studies at the influential Swiss School of Tourism in Sierre, during which he was already working in an advisory capacity for the tourism offices of Geneva and Verbier. Soon after his graduation he became responsible for sports and cultural event management at the Leukerbad tourism headquarters.

He joined the Lausanne Tourism Office & Convention Bureau in 1990 as sales representative for North America and The Middle East and has been a Society of Incentive & Travel Executives (SITE) member since 1995. In the same year he was awarded the Tourism Expert Diploma (TOUREX) and in 1997 was appointed Director of Marketing and Sales of Lausanne Tourism. After a merger of tourist offices in the towns of Montreux

and Vevey, Mr. John became President of Montreux-Vevey Tourisme in 2001.

Later in 2001 Mr. John was appointed as Director of Montreux Riviera Tourism and assuming the responsibilities of this position was a logical step in a career that has taken in tourism marketing, sports and leisure planning, member and advisory roles for numerous tourism associations, cultural and economic boards across Switzerland. He has been chairman of the Board of Swiss Cities (an association of 27 Swiss cities) since November 2005. He also continues his assocation with SITE, representing them as chair of their international conference in December 2008.

Since assuming his current directorship, Mr. John has overseen destination management of 23 towns and villages, followed by the launch of the new brands Montreux Riviera in 2008 and CI/CD in 2009. Under his management, the region of Montreux Riviera won the prestigious Milestone 2009, the benchmark Swiss tourism industry award for outstanding destination and brand management.

Ms. Strupule and Ms. Silava opened their joint speech by describing the special honor they felt to be standing in front of their fellow students. They related that their EU experience had only been possible because of the support that they had received from the accomplished professors of EU, the international student body and of their family and friends. They reflected that choosing a university was one of the most important decisions of their lives and that studying at EU had enriched them on a personal as well as an educational level, praising particularly the case study method of teaching employed at the university. They concluded that all EU graduates are united by the view that they are living in a world with no boundaries of opportunity and success: a developing world that they can and will help to improve.

Ms. Hernandez and Ms. Mauerer opened with thanks to the “family” of the “amazing MBA group” at European University Barcelona. They explained how studying in a team situation in such an international environment challenged them to be more open-minded and tolerant. Ms. Mauerer particularly commended the case study teaching method at EU, saying that it had given her confidence and helped to define her career goals. They both concluded by thanking their family and friends for attending their Commencement and expressed their appreciation for the staff of the European Univeristy. They then invited their fellow graduates to stand and applaud each other on this milestone in their lives.

This year’s recipients were Dilia Melodie Sister from France and Ieva Strupule and Marite Silava from Latvia.

There were some students who truly excelled above and beyond the accomplishments of their peers and deserve special mention for their exemplary efforts inside and outside of the classroom. Dr. Mack was the first key speaker to address the audience with a thrilling speech about Charleston as a cultural and historic location as well as a university. Her speech resounded with the themes of sustainability and inter-connectivity; the idea that the world is so inter-connected now that events, good or bad, can have domino effects on global scales. She believes this generation, which is accustomed to today’s technologies and global conscious-ness, is capable of leading the way towards environmental sustainability, minimizing the carbon footprint left on the planet whilst ensur-ing prosperity for future generations.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESSAND ECONOMICS

Highlights from Dr. Mack’s speech

“To the graduating students, today is a milestone event in your lives, a rite of passage.”

“The professional world you are entering is a different one, socially, politically, demographically, and environmentally, than the one that I entered when I graduated from the univer-sity and different than anyone before has ever entered. All graduating classes have to deal with change, but the world is simply evolving more rapidly each year; change so rapid, you almost have to rub your eyes in disbelief. It is truly exponen-tial change. A few examples:“2 million e-mails sent every second“60 billion searches on Google every month“$44 billion in e-commerce transactions in 2009.”

“Our global financial crisis is another reminder of just how interconnected we are.”

“We are truly a global society and it is important to keep this at the forefront of our minds and our business practices”

“In the U.S., we have the ‘Made in America’ slogan to promote U.S. interest and encourage people to buy U.S. products… it is not just a slogan, but a philosophy: made on earth.”

“… your generation is the generation that, if any, has the brain power to fix the world’s problems. This is an environment that is sometimes threatening and often quite scary, but it is an environment that will also present opportunities to those of you who are ready and prepared. You have been prepared by European University. Globally, employers tell universities what they are looking for when they hire our graduates. They want good communication skills, analytical/research skills, flexibility, adaptability, interpersonal and leadership/manage-ment skills.”

“Embrace the made on earth philosophy because as a world we can no longer continue to be ethnocentric, focused only on our own, personal, regional, country, or continental best interest. This is the way we also must run our businesses: truly sustainable businesses with integrity worthy of our earth!”

Whilst everyone listened to live music, they savoured wine from European University Board of Trustee member and local Mayor Philippe Gex’s vineyards and dishes from Michelin Guide-listed Chef Philippe Guignard. EU MUNICHCommencement Ceremony 18 June 2010

The ceremony was opened by the triumphant entrance of the graduates. Dean Sascha Liebhardt welcomed the students, guests and guests of honor with an opening speech and thanked everyone for an outstanding academic year. Dean Liebhardt congratulated gradu-ates on their hard work and dedication and reminded them that the word ‘commencement’ is just another word for ‘opportunity’.

EU Munich

The Commencement Ceremony of European University took place in the magnificent Fest-saal Hall of the luxurious Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich. Bachelor and Master students of more than 30 nationalities were proud to graduate from EU and were joined on this special day by family and guests.

The featured guest speaker Mr. Yves Leterme, Prime Minister of Belgium, was introduced and gave the audience and especially the graduates an enthralling address. He spoke to them about significant change in global business, politics and culture. Rather than ‘go West’ to find prosperity, Mr. Leterme believes that today Europeans should ‘go East’ and learn from the fast-growing business models developing in Asia. Sustainability was another key issue highlighted, in terms of the economy, social cohesion and the environment. He urged the graduates use their talents to realize personal growth to change their communities, countries, Europe and, ultimately, the world.

Dr. Dirk Craen, President of European University, took the stage and gave an inspirational speech, highlighting the importance of one’s dreams and believing in oneself to have a successful future.

After the announcement and presentation of the diplomas all attention focused on the students receiving special awards for their excellent academic performance.

European University was also honored to present Sister Theodolinde Mehltretter the King Fellow Award in recognition of her contribution to charity, as well as for her leadership skills at Adelholzener Alpenquellen GmbH. EU also marked the occasion with a contribution to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.

After collecting his King Fellow award, Mr. Christoph Bellmer, Head of New TV at the ProSiebenSat 1 Media Group and CEO of SevenSenses, gave a speech reflecting on his own Commencement day, recollecting what a thrill it had been for him to put his studies behind him and begin his career.

Using a practical example from his stellar career in mass media communications, he recalled how he had once staked his reputation and perhaps entire career in his chosen industry on a single strategic decision. Sticking to his plans despite intense corporate and political pressure, his decision was vindicated: he therefore encouraged the students to be strong, take risks and use their initiative when making key professional judgements.

He concluded by stating that EU students “had enjoyed probably the best education available on the market.”

Born in 1960, Mr. Leterme is a child of the Western part of Flanders. After spending his childhood in Zillebeke and Ypres, he studied political sciences and law at the Kortrijk campus of the University of Leuven and at the University of Ghent, where his passion

for politics, international relationships and administration flourished. Through work with politically active youth organizations in Ypres, he was eventually asked to join the Christian-democratic party, where he became chairman of the Ypres CVP-Youth.

After subsequent posts as assistant to parliamentarian Paul Breyne and later in the cabinet of the regional minister Paul Deprez, Leterme joined the Belgian Court of Auditors in 1987 while staying active with CVP of Ypres, becoming chairman in 1988 and later national secretary in 1991.

In 1992 Mr. Leterme became an administrator at the European Union, where he worked for five years. Later, as Minister-President of Flanders, he remained closely connected with European affairs while still remaining politically active in Ypres, becoming municipal councilor and alderman in 1995 and parliamentarian in 1997. In 2001 he became the CD&V faction leader in the House of Commons and in 2003 he became the party chairman. In 2004 Mr. Leterme became Minister-President of the Flemish government, taking a pragmatic course toward increasing the economic dynamic and social well-being in Flanders by successfully re-focusing on

investment in infrastructure and logistics. Additionally, Mr. Leterme’s government inherited a sizeable public debt which has been reduced to zero as the result of his economic policies.

The elections of June 2007 saw Mr. Leterme help his party to a landslide victory and in December of that year he became Vice-Prime Minister of Belgium and Minister of Budget, Transport, Institutional Reform and the North Sea before receiving the confidence of the Chamber as Prime Minister in March 2008.Following a July 2009 government reshuffle, Leterme was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and in November 2009 once again became Prime Minister, heading a five-party coalition government. He currently retains this role as incumbent.

Sister Theodolinde was born in Oberpfalz, Germany in 1946. By 1963 she had joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, taking her vows in 1966.

Following her vows, she worked for 21 years in a nursing home where she held administrative duties and took care of the elder sisters. She later worked in the accounts department of the Motherhouse of Congregation in Munich for two years before completing training in business administration and financial accounting. This lead to her position on the Executive Board of Adelholzener Alpenquellen GmbH, Bavaria’s largest mineral water fountain, which belongs to the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul; proceeds are donated to charity and special projects. The congregation also runs 13 other institutions, such as hospitals and nursing homes, with 1,500 employees.

Mr. Bellmer is Head of New TV at the ProSiebenSat 1 Media Group and CEO of SevenSenses, where he is responsible for non-advertising-financed activities of the TV group (including pay-TV, mobile-TV, video on-demand and participation television). ProSiebenSat 1 is the second largest broadcasting group in Europe, with 5,000 employees in 14 countries.

Born in Hanover in 1963, he graduated from the technical University of Munich in 1989, where he studied engineering with an emphasis on electronics and IT. Before joining the ProSiebenSat 1 Media Group, Mr. Bellmer held several senior positions with other groups; he was Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Media Broadcast, where his task was to build new business lines; COO of Unity Media, where he launched the pay-TV channel ‘Arena’ and managed the operating activating of the cable provider, as well as other management positions with T-Systems and the General Electric Group.

In 2004, Sister Theodolinde was named Superior General of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, and still holds responsibility for all of its institutions, sisters and employees today. She was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 2007.

German magazine ‘Wirstschaftswoche’ states that Mr. Bellmer belongs to the top 100 most influential German managers, and is considered an industry insider with profound experience in the digital TV business. In his spare time, Mr. Bellmer is a keen stunt-flying pilot.
