Literacy:TheKeytoSuccessisthe63rdConferenceTheme.

TheWestVirginiaReadingAssociation(WVRA)beganfiftyyearsago.Nowin2018,theAssociationwillcelebrateits50thAnniversaryastheoldestprofessionalorganizationinWestVirginiacommittedtoeradicating illiteracy intheMountainState. In1968,WVRA’skeyfocuswas improvingreadinginstructionforallstudents.Duringthesefiftyyears,sinceitsfounding,WVRAhasevolvedandmadegreatstridestorecognizestudentachievementinreadingandprovideprofessionaldevelopmentforalleducatorsinreading.Therearenolonger“blackandwhite”approachestoreading,buttherearehintsofgreythatindicateablendingofthese“blackandwhite”approachestoreading.However,theconferencecommitteewillretaintheblackandwhitecolorschemetopromotetheeleganceofthis50thanniversarycelebration.WVRArecognizesthatstudentsrequiremorethantheabilitytoread.Studentsrequireliteracyskillsthatinclude:notonlytheabilitytoread,butalsotheabilitytowrite,speak,listen,comprehendandenjoyreading.AlleducatorsareresponsibleforprovidingstudentswiththisKeyofLiteracythroughbookstopromoteandensurefutureSuccess.TheKeyofLiteracyandthebookarethetwoelementsofthis2018conferencelogo.Literacyisanessentialcomponentofeverydaylifeandisembeddedin all social interactions, activities and relationships. This rationale forms the basis for the keyquestionsthattheconferencecommitteeisseekingtoanswerforconferenceparticipantsthroughconcurrentsessions.
