The Atmosphere
The Atmosphere
. The surface of earth is surrounded by an envelop of air called atmosphere.
It extends approximately 70 Kilometers above the earth’s surface.
The atmosphere gradually thins out into space. The atmosphere is the thickest near the earth.
Composition of the Atmosphere
Atmosphere is composed of air which consists of different colorless gases.
Nitrogen and oxygen constitute nearly 99% of the total gases present in the atmosphere.
Composition of the Atmosphere
Gas %
Nitrogen 78.08
Oxygen 20.94
Argon 0.91
Carbon dioxide 0.03
Water vapours Variable
Dust and smoke Variable
Layers of the Atmosphere
Layers of the Atmosphere
There are 4 principal layers in the atmosphere.First layer is the troposphere that is where the weather is madeThen comes stratosphere which is where planes fly. The ozone layer is inside the stratosphere.Next is the mesosphere that is where rocks burn so that they do not hit the earthThe last layer is the Ionosphere after which the space starts.
Importance of the Atmosphere
Atmosphere provides oxygen which is required for breathing and sustaining life.It prevent earth from severe heat of the Sun during the day time and keeps earth warm in the night by holding back the heat received earlier. It protect earth from harmful radiations and meteors.
Importance of the Atmosphere
The atmosphere also enables us to hear and communicate because it carries sound from one place to another.
It is responsible for changes in weather, blowing of wind, storms and cyclones etc.
