Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m explaining the revised Roman Missal orations that were not on a Sunday last year. May our reflections on the theologically deep, beautiful Mass orations, gleaned from
the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, help us grow in FAITH!
Immaculate Conception of the BVM - Collect
O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin prepared a worthy
dwelling for your Son, grant, we pray, that, as you preserved her from every stain
by virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw, so, through her intercession,
we, too, may be cleansed and admitted to your presence.
Our National Feast Day. With fewer priests and the confusion over which Mass to celebrate on Saturday or Sunday night when a holyday falls on a Saturday or Monday, the US Bishops lifted the obligation to attend Masses on these holy days except for December 25 [Christmas] and December 8: the Immaculate Conception of Mary in the womb of her mother, Saint Ann. While this truth had been widely believed by the Church for hundreds of years, it was only declared dogma by Pope Pius IX in 1854. However, before that, in 1846, the US Bishops, at their first Council of Baltimore, placed our 70-year-old country in Mary’s care under her title, ‘the Immaculate Conception.’ So December 8th is always a holy day of obligation for us.
This feast proves that ‘solo scriptura’ or ‘the Bible alone’ is not enough! For the Bible is like a field from which we mine ores and other products that must be tested, refined and blended with common sense and other skills to give us God’s FULL revelation of the Gospel Truth! As this Collect explains, while Christ’s Death took place ‘in time’ or in human history, the Bible often says God planned everything before time began! However, Mary was free to accept, ignore, reject or even oppose God’s plan. For like Adam and Eve, Mary was created without Original Sin, but she remained sinless. Since our free will is weakened by the stain of Original Sin, we ask Mary’s intercession to help us do the Father’s will – as she always did!
Immaculate Conception of the BVM - Offerings
Graciously accept the saving sacrifice which we offer you, O Lord, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, and grant that, as we profess her, on account of your prevenient grace,
to be untouched by any stain of sin, so, through her intercession,
we may be delivered from all our faults.
Prevenient Grace. Even my computer’s spell check did not know the word ‘prevenient’ which means ‘anticipatory.’ Perhaps a unique word is required to describe the unique grace given to such a unique woman! However, contrary to what some say, we do not worship Mary! As the Collect states, we worship the God who gifted or graced Mary with all she needed to be the Mother of His Son, our God in human form. And the Prayer over the Offerings reminds us: we now ask Mary’s help or intercession so that what she was EXEMPTED from, we may be DELIVERED from: that is, sin. For Mary was also a human being in need of the redemption made possible only through Christ’s ‘saving sacrifice.’ The Immaculate Conception simply celebrates God’s lavish love, which neither time nor space can limit in any way, shape or form!
Immaculate Conception of the BVM - Communion
May the Sacrament we have received, O Lord our God, heal in us the wounds of that fault from which in a singular way you preserved Blessed Mary in her Immaculate Conception.
Freedom From Sin. As the title of Elton John’s 1976 hit, “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” reminds us, seeking someone’s pardon is one of life’s painful requirements. But not for our Blessed Mother! The Immaculate Conception never had to ask for forgiveness! But we do, and often! Today’s Prayer after Communion asks Mary’s help as, with God’s loving help, through the gift of the Eucharist, we strive to restore our Baptismal Grace, renew our efforts to use every gift and grace God has given us, and recommit ourselves to live by God’s will … as Mary always did! “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!”

wish needs of very needy families from Catholic
Community Services. The cases are now available.
These families are the neediest of the needy. The
estimated cost of adopting a family of four is $300.00.
In the past, parishioners who cannot adopt on their
own have joined relatives, friends or co-workers to
adopt a needy family. The gifts will be collected the

The ‘Year of Faith’ at Saint Mary Church
The Apostles said to Jesus, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry
tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you." [Luke 17:5-6]
If we only realized the awesome power of the kernel of faith with which God has gifted us! In this ‘Year of Faith’ proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI, we are challenged to rediscover what the small seed of faith that has been planted within us can do - by doing more to learn about our Christian faith and putting it into practice. While our faith can change our world, this year’s parish Advent calendar suggests little ways to change ourselves and those around us. By fulfilling the calendar’s spiritual exercises, we can stir into flame the sparks of the faith that many have allowed to fade or go dormant.

We are getting ready to begin the tedious task of getting
back into the Parish Center. Carpet was placed in some
offices and other offices have tiled floors. Before we
start organizing, we need volunteers to help clean floors,
dust window sills, clean furniture etc. Do you have some
time during the day for us? Call the Parish Office if you
think you can help!
GYMNASIUM ENTRANCE PROJECT
We WILL be presenting plans for our gymnasium
renovation to the Borough of Rutherford on
December 13; we’re seeking site-plan approval and
the variances needed for the project. The front of the
gym is one of the last eyesores on our Parish campus;
we plan to put a new brick front and extend the area
out further to give some much needed office space.
I need as many of you as possible of you to attend the
meeting, December 13 for a respectful “storming of
the Bastille.”
INFLUENZA VACCINE
The Rutherford Health Department is pleased to report that
they still have additional doses of the seasonal influenza vaccine
and are opening the program to all residents 36 months of age
and older, free of charge. It will be available to non-residents at
a cost of $13.00 per dose. If interested, contact the public
health nurses weekdays between 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at (201)
460-3020 for information.
ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL
No matter how busy we are or how tight our
budget might be, we are all called to have
compassion for those who are less fortunate
than us. We hear these instructions in both the Old and
New Testament. In fact, Jesus tells us that we will be
judged by how well we reach out to those who were
hungry, thirsty, homeless, sick, grieving or in need of our
compassion in any way. If you have made a sacrificial gift
to the AAA THIS YEAR, Saint Mary will ONLY receive
credit for your gift if the amount pledged is paid by
DECEMBER 31ST. Anything received after the 31st, the
Archdiocese receives your credit and NOT the parish.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Regina Council 1688 of the Knights of Columbus was founded
by a group of Catholic men from Saint Mary Parish of
Rutherford on May 4, 1913 and we will be celebrating our 100th
Anniversary with Saint Mary Parish during May of 2013. We
ask that all current members of Regina Council send an update
via email indicating their contact information with current email
addresses and phone numbers to Bill Teresavage at
[email protected]. Additional nformation can be found on

On DECEMBER 9TH, candles will be lighted by parents,
grandparents and siblings at 7pm in every time zone in memory
of all children who have died, producing a wave of light that will
encircle the earth. As candles burn down in one time zone, it
becomes 7pm in another creating a virtual 24 hour memorial.

Can we still talk about it? The first event of the year of Faith, “A World without
End: The End of Times,” captures the human desire for peace and joy at the end of this life. In my previous article, I shared some thoughts with you about purgatory, a state in which the soul is purified so as to attain union with God. In the Universal Judgment at the end of time, there will only be two choices for us: Heaven (full union with God) or Hell (utter separation from God). These destinies are the result of our act of will (based of course on a confident and total dependence on God) to choose good and avoid evil.
This choice is often not heard in our ordinary conversation. Some Catholics think that these teachings are obsolete. The truth is quite the contrary. Sometimes you and I are afraid to face the reality of life when confronted with eternal judgment. Punishment or reward depends on the good and bad deeds we do in this life (1 Peter 1:17). This follows a simple logic that God’s Mercy is Just. The teaching of the Holy Mother Church is grounded on the Sacred Scripture and Tradition. As a mother, she guards the faith and handed them down to her children for the salvation of souls.
If Hell and Heaven is not real then God is a liar. It also follows that our Sacramental life is meaningless. An atheistic and agnostic culture convinces us not to believe in a Supreme Being and the existence of mysteries. They refuse to accept the love of God in their hearts; hence instead of having joy and peace, they resort to hatred and anger. The Eternal Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1:1, 14). They are looking for the proof of God’s existence instead failed to recognize that God is already with us. God gave us His only begotten son who died and rose on third day. This is not simply to express the power of God but to give us the living proof of eternal life to come. This can be experience right now if we are in right relationship with God and each other.
So what can we do now? God gives us two options: Heaven or Hell. We cannot be united to God unless we freely choose to love him (CCC 1033). To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever. This self-exclusion from communion with God and blessed life is called hell. Those who die in God’s grace and friendship and are perfectly purified live forever with Christ (CCC1033). This is heaven. This mystery is beyond all understanding but Sacred Scripture gives us the glimpse of what it looks like through images: “life,” “light,” “peace,” “wedding feast,” “the wine of the kingdom,” “the Father’s house,” “the heavenly Jerusalem,” “paradise”: “no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heard of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him (CCC1027; 1 Cor 2:9). When you are at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, Sacrament of Confession or in other Sacraments, can you recognize the presence of heaven before us? If not, what’s getting in the way?
