ABOUT MEI relish in the ideas, the concept, the process, the iterations, and the possibilities of a situation. I ask a lot of questions in order to challenge, communicate, resolve, or encourage. I believe in chances, risks, and the capability to make things happen. I constantly imagine, dream, and believe that magic is a part of everyday life. I laugh, love, smile, cry, feel, and enjoy as passionately as I can. I’m a visionary, an entrepreneur, a crafter, a daughter, a friend, a sister, a dancer, a designer, a traveler, a creator and a leader.

Architecture provides a unique opportunity to blur the physical boundaries between humans and animals, increasing the well-being and health of both species. This proposed wildlife rehabilitation center is located on the west side of New York City along the Hudson Rail Yards and the High Line. The site provides access from the existing High Line entry all the way to the Hudson River. Specific moments of the rehabilitation center allow for visitors, volunteers, employees and public to interact with animals physically and visually.

The way in which humans are currently living is greatly affecting the health and well-being of our society. The work and living environments that we inhabit everyday have a strong influence on the quality in which we live. Exposure to nature is scientifically shown to be very important for humans’ well-being. The occupant can experience lowered blood pressure, lowered stress levels, and an increase in overall happiness. Many people seek out green places to live, but the city has very limited opportunities for exposure to nature. The opportunity for design to integrate nature into more

aspects of life can be very beneficial to humans. Animals, especially domesticated ones, have been continuously incorporated into a majority of environments. Many workplaces allow dogs because they encourage interaction among co-workers, start conversations, and provide an immediate way to relieve stress. Despite the many proven benefits that animals provide, only small opportunities to interact exist. If humans and animals could be brought together at points within the built environment, then the overall well-being of society would greatly improve.

This decrepit 18th century castell was once used against the French as a military base. Monolithic stables were able to house 600 horses at a time. The proposal for a modern horse training facility recalls its history and utilizes the existing scale and material. The facility consists of a new open air structure for training and shows. The structure emulates the thickness of the adjacent stone stables. The screen facade system is tied into the structure.

The existing castell features thick stone archways that provide a grand threshold between the working fields and the interior stables. The new structure provides a covered pathway leading from the stables to the fields and the training facility. This new threshold provides a procession from building to building and allows for multiple viewpoints to each area where horses will be training, grazing, or working.

Located in the South End of Boston, this culinary school responds to the social demographics of the area. Community spaces are formed by suspended wood volumes, providing areas for social interaction. The wood material creates a sequence of spaces throughout the building. There are visual and audible connections between floors and programmatic spaces.

Located in a park in Jamaica Plains, Boston, this elementary school uses the contours of the site to form the shape of the building. A central spine becomes the main hallway with programmtic elements branching off or attached to it. Layers of program allow for different user interactions and the integration of changes in levels. The classrooms are separated from the hallway spine creating interior courtyards. The glazed corridors to the classrooms allow for views into the hallway, courtyards, and classrooms. An accessible ramp exemplifies the use of the contour to get the the pond below.

Metamorphosis is a second-place winning competition entry for a funerary chapel and memorial grove located on an island. The undulating wall is formed of wooden members that create an organic form that flows from a walkway, to seating, to a rigid wall. Nature is integrated into the wall as seasons change, and water and grass interact with the naturally weathered wood.

This modern one-room schoolhouse needed to be integrated into an apple orchard. The design uses a datum wall to organize interior and exterior spaces as well as frame views outside. The secondary program spaces are integrated into the primary space with circulation and furniture.

The theme for Wentworth’s summer orientation program was decided to be based on the ideology of the Olympics. It was my role to design a logo, apparel, team builders, and training sessions around the idea of “creating a legacy” and acting on individual strengths and interests. It was important to me to inspire staff and new students as they each enter new and exciting stages of their lives.

. . . Behind an idea or solution simply with graphics and type.

With a family reunion reoccuring every three years, the Whalen’s decided they needed a logo and t-shirt design to represent their growing brood of over one hundred extended family members.

I provided a logo and theme for the M.Arch gala put on for the students and faculty. Corresponding flyers and t-shirts were used for fundraising events and ticket sales.
