‘The recession has a long tail’

Thanksgiving in Canada is a holidaytradition based on celebrating the bounty offood at the end of harvest season. For manypeople struggling to get by in these tougheconomic times, it may not seem like thereis an awful lot to be thankful for these days.Thankfully there are always people in the

community who want to make sure nobodywill be going hungry over the holiday.

“We have three turkeys in the 20-poundrange and we’ll be serving them with allthe trimmings,” said Susan Sinclair of theWest Burnaby United Church of the freefeast planned for Tuesday starting at noonat their church at 6050 Sussex Ave. She saidthe church isn’t planning for more peopleattending than they normally see for theirannual Thanksgiving, which is usually 100to 140 or so people. “If we run out of food,we run out of food. We’re just going bywhat we normally do and we also run theseon Easter and Christmas.”

For those closer to the New West border, the Union Gospel Mission at 658 ClarksonSt. will also be offering turkey dinners forup to 400 people on Monday beginning atnoon.

This will be good news for people whomight otherwise be facing the holiday with-out the prospect of a hearty feast. Accordingto the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness, the number of people dealing with home-lessness in Burnaby has more than doubledin the past three years, with an estimated250 without a roof over their heads. Manymore are simply struggling to get by andmore people than ever are relying on social

service agencies to meet basic needsA recent survey of Salvation Army staff

from across the country found that demandfor food programs, including food banks, meal programs and street ministry units, are on the rise. More than three-quarters ofall respondents indicated that requests forfood service increased this year while, tomake things worse, food donations in mostareas either remained the same or decreasedin 2010. The charity provided approximate-ly 2.8 million meals to Canadians last year.

“The recession has a long tail,” said

Reporter Alfie Lau,the Burnaby NOW’scrime reporter,

sat down with ChiefSuperintendent Rick Taylorrecently to find out what hethinks of his detachment’spast and future.

Rick Taylor may be justa little past the halfwaypoint in his five-year stra-tegic plan for the BurnabyRCMP but he believes he’s80 per cent complete on allhis major goals.

“I think we’re ahead ofschedule,” said the chiefsuperintendent who tookover Burnaby’s top copspot in 2007. “I’m prettyhappy that we went livewith our new website (thissummer). It took time butthat was one of the lastmust-do items on my list.

“The rest is all internal, putting together reportsand making sure that thesystems we’ve put in are

refined.”Taylor said policing has

changed so much since hefirst put on his uniformand strapped on his equip-ment.

“I’ve been a police offi-cer for the past 30 yearsand it’s still amazing tome how much things havechanged since I started,”he said. “Everything is sodriven by technology thesedays and we’ll see that

continually changing as wehead into the future.”

Taylor couldn’t help butreminisce about his firstcellphone.

“It was 1992 and whatthey gave me was like abrick,” he said. “Beforethen, we were all onpager but when the cell-phone came in, that reallychanged a lot of things.”

Look at an RCMP cruis-er today and you’ll find

that officers have a mobilework station that allowsthem to be connected to themost current information.

“I can see the day whenofficers won’t be usingtheir hands (on comput-ers) at all,” said Taylor.“Everything will be voiceactivated, there will bemore scanning technologyand you may even see acompletely paperless wayof doing things.”

And it’s these changesthat lead Taylor to believethat the Burnaby RCMPhas to stay on top of cut-ting-edge technology.

“I think that for us todeliver the quality servicethat the city is paying forand that citizens expect,we need to be doing every-thing we can from a tech-nology standpoint,” saidTaylor.

As important as tech-

nology is to Taylor, don’tthink that he doesn’t knowthe value of good old-fash-ioned police work.

“Where I see the benefitof technology is it frees upthe time of our officers,”said Taylor. “It gets ourofficers out of their cars andback into the neighbour-hoods, talking to peopleand giving the citizens anidea of what we’re doing.”

Horsemen: Not your usual RCMP musical ride. Chief Superintendent Rick Taylor poses with some of his officers on the 1912 CW ParkerCarousel that was restored and now operates at Burnaby Village Museum. Taylor will be speaking at a Burnaby Historical Society meetingnext week.

Campaign targets LennikovThe Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association has

launched a postcard campaign to pressure the governmentto deport Mikhail Lennikov, a Burnaby resident and formerKGB agent who has been in church sanctuary for more thana year.

In recent weeks, the association has been distributingpostcards, which read “No KGB in Canada,” to the publicand mailing them to politicians, the RCMP, the CanadianSecurity Intelligence Service and the Canadian BorderServices Agency.

“(It’s) a wake-up call, it’s a reminder,” said LubomyrLuciuk, the association’s director of research. “It’s areminder this man has now been in Canada a year after hesupposed to be deported.”

The postcard’s graphics show a flight attendant and adepartingplanewiththewords“VancouvertoVladivostock”in the wake. (Lennikov is from Vladivostock.) On the backof the postcard, it states: “On 28 January 2010 The NationalPost quoted the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of PublicSafety, as saying, ‘The Immigration and Refugee Boardand the courts have determined that Mr. Lennikov is not

Taylor said he expectshis officers to followthrough on each and everyfile.

“In my welcome letterthat I give to every newofficer, I emphasize thatwe derive our authorityfrom the respect that citi-zens give us,” he said. “Wehave to earnthat respectand authorityand if we areacting on theirconcerns, wehave to alwayscommunicateto them whatwe’re doingand what’sbeen done.

“I tell myofficers to treateverybody like you wouldlike to be treated yourself.”

As Taylor looks backat his first three yearsas officer-in-charge ofthe Burnaby RCMP, hecouldn’t be prouder ofwhat has transpired.

“I think that Burnaby, along with Surrey, are theflagship RCMP detach-ments in the entire coun-try,” said Taylor. “I’m veryproud of that and thatmeans we set the standard.I want Burnaby to be thedetachment that police offi-cers aspire to come to.”

Taylor also doesn’tavoid the tough ques-tions when it comes to theRCMP’s overall image.

“I know that nationally, the RCMP has taken itshits,” said Taylor referenc-ing questions about RCMPComm. William Elliott’sleadership. “And theDziekanski (Taser) incidentwas certainly damaging... but all we can do inBurnaby is try and providethe best service we can to

the citizens thatultimately payour (wages).

“That’s why,for myself, atevery oppor-tunity I get,at communityevents, at publicsafety forums, atcommunity townhalls, I’m there, getting the mes-sage out on what

we’re doing and beingaccountable to the public,”said Taylor.

“I want Burnaby to be assafe as possible and if we’renot doing that, I want tohear from the citizens howwe can do better.”

Taylor said one of thefirst things he did when hecame to Burnaby was tohave a system where therewas accountability.

“Nobody likes doingreports but if I’m tellingthe public they’re safer, Ihave to have the numbersto back it up,” he said. “I’mnot so naïve to think wecan ever completely elimi-nate crime but we have toshow how the work we’re

doing is making Burnaby asafer place to live.”

And communicatingthe message is at the heartof what Taylor has tried toaccomplish.

“Can you communicatetoo much?” he asked rhe-torically. “I don’t think so.I think we can always tryand communicate better.”

As for an assessmentof how he’s done his job,Taylor is also frank.

“I have to be tryingto do better each day,”he said. “That’s why I’malways asking our officerswhat I should be doing tohelp them do their jobs bet-ter. ... Communication goesboth ways and I have tolisten. ... One thing I havetried to do better is to getout from behind my desk.

“In my job, it’s prettyeasy to just sit behind mydesk and communicatefrom there but I find thatby getting out, even if it’sjust in the office, I learnabout what’s happening onthe front lines.”

admissible to Canada under our laws.’I agree! So why is this veteran officerof the notorious Soviet secret police, the KGB, still here?”

The Canadian government wants tosend Lennikov back to Russia becausehe worked for the KGB for five yearsin the ‘80s. Canadian immigration lawstates members of an organization thatspied on a democratic governmentare not allowed to stay in the coun-try unless the public safety ministerdeems they are not detrimental tonational security.

Lennikov first came to Canada in1997 on a student visa. He took coverin Vancouver’s First Lutheran Churchon June 2, 2009, just one day before hewas scheduled to be deported. WhileLennikov and his supporters say heis not a security threat and should beallowed to stay, the government hasnot budged on its position that he’sinadmissible. Lennikov has exhaustedall legal appeals and is still facingdeportation.

Luciuk, who is also a former mem-ber of the federal Immigration andRefugee Board, is questioning whyLennikov is still here.

“I think they should go in thereand remove him and send him backto Vladivostock. If his wife and his kidwant to join him, great,” he said.

For Luciuk, the push to deportLennikov is not a personal attack, it’sa principled matter of upholding thelaw.

“The law is very clear: Any personinvolved with the KGB is inadmis-sible,” he said. “I’m sure (Lennikov) isa nice guy. … This has nothing to do

with him, it has to do with the laws ofthe land.”

Luciuk also questioned “well-intentioned but ignorant MPs” whohave thrown their support behindLennikov.

“The reality of it is it’s not a matterof opinion. The law is clear,” he said.

The federal government’s positionis the same: “The immigration andrefugee board and the courts havedetermined that Mr. Lennikov is notadmissible to Canada under our laws. The removal of admissible individu-als is key to maintaining the integrityof the immigration program and to

ensuring fairness of those who cometo this country lawfully.”

Luciuk said the postcards were partof a “national campaign intended toremind to government of Canada touphold the laws of the land.”

“This is as much a grassroots cam-paign as the campaign to allow Mr.Lennikov to stay in Canada,” he said.

Lennikov declined to comment onthis story, and the CBSA was not ableto comment by NOW deadlines.

Contrary to the office sup-plies commercial sayingLabour Day is the most

wonderful time of the year – forparents with schoolchildren atleast – the best time of year forsports fans is October.

Every major sport is either infull swing or in training campand we’re not just talking NorthAmerica.

In North America, the NFL isinto its second quarter of action, the baseball playoffs are goingall day, the NHL season is kick-ing off and NBA training camps, including a Phoenix Suns-Toronto Raptors exhibition gamein Vancouver, are in full swing.

On the other side of the pond, the NHL opening games inFinland and the Czech Republictook place Thursday morning. And from European football toFormula One auto racing andthe just completed Ryder Cup,there’s no other way to put it:It’s a sports fan’s dream time ofyear.

Add in the fact that theplethora of sports-only televisionstations is expanding at a milea minute – Sportsnet One is on

free preview until Oct. 31, andTSN2 is going gangbusters – andsports fans should really have noreason to complain.

Well, here’s one disgruntledsports fan.

Last month, the NewWestminster Salmonbelliesplayed the Mann Cup inPeterborough.

The local cable carrier,Cogeco, was involved with pro-ducing the games for the Ontarioaudience, but all us Westernersgot was a webcast of the game.

The good folks at the River’sReach pub in New Westminstergot the webcasts going on theirbig screens – lots of wire andlots of duct tape did the job– and it was a pretty rockingplace to be, even though theSalmonbellies lost.

It was pretty weird watchinga game with no replays, no scorebug in the top left hand cornerand action that would freezesuddenly because of a slow com-puter connection.

Meanwhile, TSN, TSN2,Sportsnet One, Sportsnet West,Sportsnet Pacific, SportsnetOntario, The Score, the NHLNetwork, the NFL Network,Speed TV, the Fight Networkand probably a couple othernetworks I’ve forgotten wereshowing a full complement ofmixed martial arts, poker, sportsmovies, darts, thumb wrestlingand tiddlywinks.

Thanksgiving? If you’re sitting in a warm, dry home

reading this paper, knowing that there’sfood in your fridge andmoney in your bank account, then you have more blessingsto count than many people dothis weekend.

Far too many people in this city ofours are homeless and hungry. TheBurnaby Task Force on Homelessnesssays the number of homeless people in

the city has more than doubled in thepast three years. An estimated 250 peo-ple are surviving without a roof overtheir heads. Many more have homes but

are struggling to get by, turn-ing to social service agenciesto meet their basic needs.

The Salvation Army andGreater Vancouver Food Bank Societyboth say that demand for their servicesis on the rise.

Though donations to the foodbank have remained steady, need is

up – lineups have increased by 10 percent, and food stock at the food banksociety’s warehouse is down by 10,000pounds from this time last year.

Fortunately for those in need, thereare people who care.

West Burnaby United Churchand the Union Gospel Mission areamong the organizations offering freeThanksgiving dinners this weekend.

Countless more groups offer help inall forms throughout the year.

But they can’t do it without help.

It’s fitting that World Homeless Dayis being marked on Oct. 10, to remindall of us of the enormous needs thatexist around us. All next week, theBurnaby Task Force on Homelessness isholding events to mark HomelessnessAction Week.

Memo from adisgruntled fan

Columnist unfair to the NDPDear Editor

Re: Rule by mob isn’t democracy, In My Opinion,Keith Baldrey, Burnaby NOW, Sept. 29

As per your request – “explain to me again whyNew Democrats have aligned themselves with FightHST?”, the NDP are elected as Official Oppositionin B.C. and fundamentally disagree with the taxshift resulting from the HST. From Day 1, they haveopposed this tax in the legislature and throughoutthe course of this B.C. Liberal tax fiasco. Quite sim-ply, the NDP are doing what they were elected todo.

While six references to a mob or gang and yourfictionalized ransom note aid in the effort to dis-parage the Fight HST organizers, it is important toremember the B.C. Liberals initiated the whole HST

debacle. Misleading voters pre-election 2009 regard-ing the HST introduction along with their phonydeficit numbers in what might be called a doublefudge-it budget was, after all, their deed.

Delaying the HST referendum for another yearserves only the B.C. Liberals, not democracy, not thepublic and not business. Appointing themselves tosolely “design” their own referendum questionnaireis yet another self-serving gesture on their part.Only fully indoctrinated Liberal supporters wouldview these two manoeuvres as anything other thana game of political chess.

Your mentioning of the NDP in the same breathas a fringe “neo Nazi holocaust denier” subtlyalludes to a connection and begs the question – doessuch utterance find a political reporter venturinginto the realm of political tactician?

Salvation Army spokespersonGraham Moore. “Every day our foodservice units are helping more andmore families and individuals whoare still facing difficult financial deci-sions, such as whether to pay a gro-cery bill or monthly utilities. As theSalvation Army transitions into theThanksgiving holiday, we are chal-lenged to serve a growing number ofCanadians, and we will depend onthe public’s support to sustain ourmission.”

The report, Restocking the Shelves2010, revealed that donation ratesremained stagnant two years after

the peak of the economic recession, while at the same time, they are facingincreased demand. On a positive note, however, volunteerism rates at foodprograms remain high.

“While the findings indicate that in2010, many Salvation Army feedingprograms faced significant challenges, there is also a sense of enduring opti-mism for the future – a future that theSalvation Army hopes will be sup-ported by a community of generousdonors and volunteers,” said Moore.

Meanwhile, the Greater VancouverFood Bank Society, which helps count-less Burnabyites keep food on theirfamily tables, say they are having the

same problem. “While donations fromgenerous individuals and organiza-tions have remained fairly consistent, lineups at food depots and at partner-ing agencies have increased by anaverage of 10 per cent from the previ-ous year, significantly depleting thefood supply,” said a message postedon their website.

Taylor Park Elementary is gettinga new addition that will house 11classrooms and accommodate 625students in grades 1 to 7 and 100 stu-dents in full-day kindergarten.

Taylor Park was built six years agoand has had growing student num-bers, bucking the provincewide trendof declining enrolment.

“We are really growing,” saidTaylor Park principal SharonChamberlain.

The provincial government has

a plan to phase in full-day kinder-garten by starting with half of B.Cschools this year and the other halfnext year.

Chamberlain said Taylor Park isnow at capacity and enrolment isprojected to grow – that’s why therewas no room for full-day kindergar-ten this year and they needed theaddition.

The Liberals already announcedthis summer that there would be eightnew classrooms at Taylor Park, butthere are actually 11 in total becausethe school district is paying for three.

There will be three rooms for kin-

dergarten, while the other eight arefor students in grades 1 to 7. Theaddition will cost $4.4 million, withthe province paying $3.3 and theschool district pitching in $1.1 mil-lion.

Construction should start inJanuary and wrap up by September2011.

Liberal MLA Harry Bloy wel-comed the news.

“This addition will help theBurnaby school district to offer full-day kindergarten, a program we feelvery strongly about,” he said in amedia release.

Burnaby Mayor DerekCorrigan wants the provin-cial government to increasethe province’s minimumwage to $10 an hour.

He was one of 21 mayorsto sign a letter to PremierGordon Campbell regard-ing the raise.

“Every day we see thepressures the minimumwage freeze brings to low-wage workers in our com-munities and to our commu-nities as a whole,” Corrigansaid in a press release.

Mayors from 21 commu-nities all signed the openletter asking for an increasefrom the current minimumwage of $8 per hour, andalso asked for the elimina-tion of the $6 per hour train-ing wage.

“It has been morethan eight years since thelast increase to BritishColumbia’s minimumwage,” the letter stated.“In that time, B.C. has gonefrom having the country’shighest minimum wage toCanada’s lowest.”

The letter pointed outthe employees who are paidminimum wage struggle

to find adequate housing, and families struggle to putnutritious food on the table. The low minimum wagealso affects post-secondarystudents, the letter added.

The letter also asked thata mechanism be put in placeto provide regular increasesin the future.

Corrigan has mentionedthe need for a minimumwage increase in past inter-views.

“We’re putting a muchhigher priority on raising theminimum wage,” Corrigan

said in an interview withthe NOW in April.

Last week, Nova Scotiaraised its minimum wage to$9.65 an hour.

The closest minimumwage to B.C.’s is Alberta’s,at $8.80 per hour, and theYukon’s at $8.93. All otherprovinces and territo-ries’ minimum wages arebetween $9 and $10.25.

The British ColumbiaFederation of Labour, backed by the mayors’ let-ter, put forward the $10minimum wage request.

Hazel May hopes to help Burnabyitesdiscover their own personal style and, inthe process, recognize their own value.

“The objective is not to tell them youneed to lose 20 pounds to look good,” shesays. “(My) motto is make the person thebest they can be.”

May, who lives in the Forest Groveneighbourhood, is a professional stylecoach and launched her own business,Know Your Style, in July.

She got her certification throughthe Styling Coach Institute in London,England, after an 18-month course, in

February. The most important things to keep in

mind when planning a wardrobe are bodyshape, eye and hair colour, and skin tone, she says.

People often don’t see themselves asothers do, and only notice their flawswhen they look in the mirror, May adds.

But she hopes to help them build theirconfidence, and know themselves better.

“People want to know what works forthem,” she says.

She helps clients declutter their ward-robes – getting rid of what doesn’t work, which is the first step – and add key piecesthrough shopping trips, she says.

She has just finished working with her

first client, an 18-year-old man who need-ed a wardrobe change after graduatingfrom high school. She helped him organizehis current fall and winter wardrobe andadd to it as well.

Her ideal clients are new graduates, particularly college grads looking to startcareers, mothers returning to the work-force who have been wearing joggingpants and T-shirts while at home withtheir kids, and people who are retiring andlooking for a wardrobe to reflect their newlifestyle, she says.

May is no stranger to new ventures.Six years ago, she convinced her family

to move to Burnaby from England. When May, formerly a resident of

Brighton, England, heard about PrincessDiana’s death, something shifted for her.

She had always viewed Diana as invin-cible, she says, and realized that if Dianacould die, she could too.

This feeling increased when a friendwas diagnosed with breast cancer anddied six months later. It was at that pointthat May decided to live her life as fully aspossible. That led to her decision to immi-grate to Canada.

“You only have one life,” she says. She came with her husband John and

their three children, now 21, 17 and 14.The couple felt they could provide a bet-

ter, safer life for their children in Canada,

she explains. They have already been able to take a trip to Australia

as a family, something they wouldn’t have been able toafford if they stayed in England because of the taxes andhigh cost of living, May says.

As well as launching her new business, May has orga-nized a special Christmas fashion fair with other smallbusiness owners.

The fair – to be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, at theExecutive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam – will include abouta dozen local vendors, such as make-up artists, handbagdesigners, candle retailers and others, she says.

She and Carrie Mason, owner of Princess FlorenceHandbags, have also started a Meetup group, Womenhelping Women in Business. They plan to hold meet-ings for Burnaby businesswomen twice a month at theExecutive Plaza Hotel.

Board of tradebreaks barriers

The Burnaby Board ofTrade organized work-place tours for 21 skilledimmigrants at SimonFraser University, B.C.Hydro and a national bankon Sept. 22.

The tours were partof the board’s BreakingDown the Barriers project. This set was the third of18 business tour stops andtwo forums, intended toconnect more than 250immigrants with Canadiancompanies over a period of18 months, according to aboard press release.

The project tries to cre-ate meaningful dialogue

between immigrantsand employers, allowingattendees to exchangeexperiences and share per-spectives.

“The (board) is encour-aging Lower Mainlandbusinesses to be morereceptive to new immi-grant talent and to under-stand the business benefitsof establishing and main-taining a diverse work-force,” the press releasestated.

Darlene Gering, president and CEO of theboard, spoke at the tourand addressed some ofthe challenges immigrantsface.

“The Canadian employ-ment market is signifi-cantly more robust thanothers, but accessing it canbe difficult and dauntingfor immigrants for whomlanguage and cultural dif-ference pose an inhibitorybarrier to entry,” she said.

“However, we needmore immigrants to driveinnovation, which isfundamental to our econ-omy’s success. We must

continue to position BritishColumbia as the preferreddestination for the world’sbest and brightest – there-fore Canadian companiesneed to understand thechallenges immigrants facein accessing the employ-ment market. Additionally, immigrants need to begiven the tools to marketthemselves so they aremore appealing to employ-ers.”

Gering added that sheis proud of the board’spartnership with theBurnaby InterculturalPlanning Table, which isleading the initiative.

Planned BreakingDown the Barriers toursinclude information tech-nology, computer science, business management andadministration companies.

The Government ofCanada and the Provinceof British Columbia fundthe project.

A Burnaby-based retail giant hasannounced it will be hiring more than4,000 seasonal helpers across the countrygearing up for the upcoming seasonalholidays, and they’re using social mediasites rather than more traditional recruit-ment methods to find them.

Future Shop is using sites such asFacebook and Twitter to hire more than4,000 seasonal workers in preparation forthe Christmas holidays.

“We recognize that most of our custom-ers and associates are social media savvy,so what better way to recruit them throughchannels they frequently use,” said vice-president Chris Taylor. “With the holidays

being Future Shop’s biggest and busiestseason, we’re thrilled that we can createthousands of new jobs for Canadians.”

The hiring blitz began earlier this month, allowing the company enough time toproperly train the thousands of new work-ers before the busy season kicks in. Thenew hires will be in stores until January.

Canada’s largest consumer electron-ics retailer, which began as a single storehere in Burnaby 25 years ago, currentlyemploys nearly 10,000 in its 146 stores, meaning its seasonal hiring blitz will addmore than 40 per cent more employees tostores across the country.

MOTORING

The Scions are finally here in Canada! The Scion lineup currently consistsof three vehicles (all under $21,000),

and there’s another one on the way. Theywill be offered mainly (via the separateshowroom-within-a-showroom idea)through 45 existing Toyota dealerships. In addition, there will be dedicated “bou-tique” downtown stores in major cities– one in Vancouver.

Scion is a youth-oriented brand thatattempts to capture the Gen Y buyer andpromises to do it with a very differentmarketing and buying experience.

The Scions are already a common sightsouth of the border, where they have beenon the market since 2004, and you mayhave spotted a number of them that havestrayed north of the 49th.

“It’s not just the car, it’s also the wayyou interact with a whole new group ofconsumers, in the way that they want tointroduce brands and products into theirlives,” according to Stephen Beatty, man-aging director, Toyota Canada. “Thesebuyers have more control over when, where and how they shop. It’s all aboutaccess and choice.”

Scion vehicles come with a high levelof standard features. Air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, an audiosystem with MP3/iPod outlets, sportseats and a full package of safety equip-

ment are all included in the base vehicle.Purchasers then have the freedom to

customize their ride from a line of morethan 75 parts and accessories, includinga full line of Toyota Racing Developmentperformance gear. It’s a mix of both deal-er and factory-installed equipment.

The Tc Sports Coupe is the sportyleader in the Scion line and was the recip-ient of an extensive redesign for 2011.While nothing like the boxy shape thatpeople associate with Scion, its designdoes incorporate the high belt line andthe “chopped” short window glass stylingtraits of its Scion compatriots. It’s also ahatchback with fold-down rear seats.

Scion calls the xB a “compact urbanutility vehicle.” The tallest Scion is a clas-sic two-box design, and it offers the mostinterior and cargo space of the trio. ThexB starts at just $18,270.

Scion xD is a smaller, lighter yet versa-tile five-door hatchback with a more fuel-efficient 1.8-litre engine that’s also matedto a five-speed manual or four-speedautomatic transmission. A start price of$17,200 makes it the lowest priced Scion.

The xD comes with versatile rear seat-ing system. In addition to being split60/40 and folding flat, they also haveclever slide and recline features. Uniquestorage features in xD include both anupper and lower glovebox, plus a pop-outcup holder on the right side of the dash.

An even smaller Scion, the iQ, isexpected later this year.

Dear Tom and Ray:My son-in-law, whom I

love like a son, just replacedthe brakes on my ‘07 Camry. It was fine for a day or so,and then I started to hear this“rubbing” noise.

It is only when I startmoving forward, never inreverse, and it quits within30 seconds. Sometimes it’svery loud, sometimes not.

He put on ceramic brakes, not “certified” Toyota parts. Itook it to the dealership whereI have all my service done, and they said the noise isbecause of the ceramic brakes.

They said it is not a safety

issue, but they would behappy to remove the ceramicbrakes and put on Toyotabrakes and, of course, turnthe rotors and charge me anarm and a leg.

Can you explain what thisis and if there is a fix for it?

I love your show – youguys are hilarious. Thanks forany help you can give.

– DeniseTOM: Well, that wasawfully nice of him todo your brakes for you,Denise. Do you think he’llbe as nice when you askhim to do them again?RAY: No, that’s unneces-sary. He did a perfectlygood job. We often useceramic brake pads, too;they’re supposed to lastlonger.

But if you don’t changethe rotors at the same time, you take a risk that therewill be some noise, andthat’s all that happenedhere.

TOM: Yeah. The noiseis just a slight rubbingbecause your old rotorshave been worn in theshape of your old pads, and the new pads don’tmatch them exactly. Butthey’re perfectly safe, andyour brakes will stop thecar just the way they’resupposed to.RAY: If it’s really drivingyou nuts, then tell yourson-in-law that you’rereally grateful for his help, but, unfortunately, yourbrakes started makingnoise right after he did thebrake job. In other words, take the car back to themechanic and complain. That’s what our custom-ers do!TOM: And if he’s willingto change the rotors foryou (soon – before the newpads conform to the oldrotors), he can make thenoise go away. Water Main Relocation

CloudyWater NoticeOctober 12 to 27, 2010

From Tuesday, October 12 to approximately Wednesday, October 27, 2010,Metro Vancouver will be relocating a water main as part of theimprovements to the Trans-Canada Highway. To accommodate therelocation work, Metro Vancouver will be re-configuring the flow of waterin a section of the water supply system.

This change in flowmay cause temporary discolouration and/orcloudiness in the water. These changes may be noticeable inNewWestminster, Burnaby, Delta and Coquitlam. It is expected that thesafety of the water will not be affected by these aesthetic changes.Monitoring of water quality continues and the water remains safe to drink.Water quality monitoring will continue to ensure the water remains safe todrink. Further notification will be provided should the situation change.

Cloudy water episodes of this type usually don’t last very long and theclarity of the water should return to normal within a short period ofnormal household water use.

In order to avoid potentially cloudy water for drinking, you may wish torefrigerate drinking water ahead of time.

For more information on water qualityor water supply, please contact:

HappinessHappiness – a simple word, but a profoundconcept, and a state that can seem quite elusiveto us. As a Career Coach, I meet with clients whocomment that they are simply not ‘happy’ withtheir work and lives and that they are seeking acareer that will bring them more happiness andsatisfaction. Although I do believe that finding a

better job or a career that is more in line with your gifts, talents andskills will help, I can see that it isn’t the whole answer either. What I’ve learned from both my professional experience and myown life journey is that happiness is a feeling of contentment andsatisfaction that emanates from a life lived in integrity and balance- a life lived ‘on purpose’. This does not mean necessarily having aworld changing purpose, but instead deciding for ourselves what’simportant to us – the people, family, work, and community we’resurrounded by and how we relate and contribute to each of them.Quite often I find that when I work with people through thesequestions many of us are living lives based on the expectations ofsociety, family and others, rather than what we prefer and value forourselves. Changing this does not mean discounting the opinionsof others, or neglecting our responsibilities or commitments, butrather reaffirming our commitment to those things, and creatingour own unique way of living out a ‘personal purpose’ in our lives. In our three week career exploration program (The TransitionsProgram) we take time to address these issues so that ourparticipants consider carefully how work fits in with the rest oftheir lives and priorities. In this way they create a career plan thatallows for a ‘work/life balance’ that is sustainable over time. To signup for an information session about the Transitions program pleasecall 604-434-1177. The program is government funded (no fee)and is available to anyone who is unemployed or under employedand eligible to work in Canada.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Oct. 10 - Oct. 16★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continueson relationships – and opportunities. Last summer’staste of luck and freedom will return as a full mealthe first five months of 2011. But until then you havea number of duties – at least two major ones – toclear up.These are not mere “chores” – they entail anobligation, a social or sacred trust. They likely involvea legal, love or international affair, or a religious, intellectual, educational or publishing matter. Clues, reminders come Sunday to Tuesday. Be ambitious, reliable midweek, but don’t seek agreement. Socialdelights, love, happiness Friday/Saturday!Taurus April 20-May 20: Two weeks remain ofdrudgery and health concerns. Soon you’ll be freeto give your full attention to the social and romantichints you’ve been picking up, and the opportunity ofthese will last until then. Meanwhile, knuckle downto work. Sunday’s social and intriguing – perhapswith someone ”higher up.” But this eve and Monday/Tuesday bring heavier themes: sex, intimacy, privacy, research, finances, commitment. (Don’t feel you haveto commit, though.) Understanding, a mellow moodenters midweek. Be ambitious Friday/Saturday:prospects look good for a new project.Gemini May 21-June 20: The emphasis remainson romance, creativity, risk and reward, pleasure, beauty and charming kids. This isn’t the easiestweek, but there are no major obstacles, either.Tackle chores Sunday a.m. – clear the decks forsome evening explorations, bids or opportunities.Partnerships and marriage haven’t been easy since2003, and won’t be this autumn/winter – nor Tuesdayp.m. But next March starts eight years of peace, harmony, friendliness and interest in relationships.Loneliness will flee! Be patient, flexible until then.Depths, mystery, sexual and financial attractionsmid-week.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Home, family, securityare still of prime importance. And romance, creativity, charming kids, pleasure, beauty, speculative risks stillrun a close second. A “prodigal child” might return inthe next three months. Sunday morning, mid-day areromantic, in a friendly but sexy way. Tackle choresthis eve to Tuesday. You’ll get a lot done – but watchsafety Tuesday eve. Relationships erect barriersWednesday/Thursday, so be diplomatic. It’s nothingmajor. Sexual urges, financial inspirations/hunches,life’s depths and mysteries arise Friday/Saturday.Invest passively, pay debts. Research!Leo July 23-Aug. 22:What’s slow is difficult; what’squick is easy. In the house, with family, be flexible,long-suffering, affectionate. Outside the house, follow your curiosity – it can lead you to valuableinformation, even to new friends. (Now to next March, you might make a friend who is surrounded by, or hasan element of, mystery. This person can offer nuggetsof little-known information, but don’t follow his/heradvice about money or business.) Rest early Sunday. This eve to Tuesday brings romantic urges — andinsights. Tackle chores midweek. Exciting meetings, fresh horizons Friday onward!Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Chase money. Buy/sell,seek new clients, ask for a pay raise or extra hours(especially Friday/Saturday). Generally this is an easy, sensual week. Sunday morning’s very friendly. Bothopportunity and opposition occur Monday/Tuesday– say yes to real estate, security, home, no tohealth or work themes. Romance, pleasure, sports, creative projects and charming kids fill Wednesday/Thursday – nighttimes best, mid-afternoons worst.Tackle chores Friday onward. A former opportunityreturns to you now to mid-November. Be ready to“work it” December/January. Might involve property, relocation.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Your energy, charisma andeffectiveness remain high. Start important projects, insist on your way, ask favours, and make personalappearances. Shop Sunday morning (especiallyfor high-tech). This afternoon through Tuesdaybrings paperwork, communications, errands, casualacquaintances – busyness. Your home life, yoursecurity, and real estate, become important mid-week. It’s a splendid time to institute your ownschedules, priorities, to end some situations and laythe groundwork for the new. Romance visits Friday/Saturday. Before 2011, new romance is not the“marrying kind.”Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Continue to take a restful, contemplative approach. Your energy levels are low.Still, there’s a lot of important work to be done, sodo it. Important because either a) you’re the only onewho can do it; or b) it promises to “almost directly”advance your own goals. Someone might be “sweet”on you – be kind, but gently evasive. Chase money,buy/sell, Sunday eve to Tuesday. Communicate – butcarefully – Wednesday/Thursday. Drive carefully, too.Be alert, because events are faster now than you are.Retreat to home ground for some deep, rejuvenatingrest Friday/Saturday.Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The accent lies onwish fulfilment, popularity, entertainment, socialdelights and group efforts. Visualize your future, make optimistic plans. You might be experiencinga clandestine attraction – this has little beneficialimpact, and could hinder future love, which would bea shame, as the first half of 2011 holds the promiseof splendid romantic beginnings! (If you’re married,2011 will bring creative and similar successes.) Sleepin Sunday morning. This p.m. (through Thursday) yourenergy soars – tackle big things, enjoy the attention!Buy/sell midweek. Errands, Friday/Saturday.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Be ambitious. Thinkabout future paths, possibilities Sunday morning. Then spend this p.m. through Tuesday evening inrest, planning, research, preparation and dealingswith “permission agencies” (government, institutions,“head office”). (Attend to health issues, also.) Chargeforth Wednesday/Thursday – ask favours, ask tosee important people, make presentations, initiateprojects. You’ll succeed! Money’s the subject (andobject) Friday/Saturday.All month, your hopes are tiedup with love and work. A co-worker romance mightbe growing more serious. There’s no harm in this!Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A sweet, mellow, easyweek, with a focus on intellectual interests, far travel, education, publishing, culture and love. (These slowmildly to late 2012.) Perform a money chore Sundaymorning. Your optimism and popularity surge this eveto Tuesday. Accept and issue invitations, envision thefuture and sign on for entertainment. A wish mightcome true (perhaps not a romantic one). Rest, retreatWednesday/Thursday. Plan and contemplate, thinkabout your shifting spiritual and charity beliefs. Yourenergy and charisma return strongly Friday/Saturday.Romance is a definite maybe.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies onmystery, depths, lust, big finances, subconsciousurges, lifestyle changes, deep health factors, commitment and consequence. These deep currentsare overlaid with a romantic, loving, and“intellectuallybeautiful” atmosphere. It could be the right time tosay “Yes” to someone or something! (Though, frankly, there’s no rush – next week’s good also, as is most ofthe rest of 2010.) Be ambitious Sunday eve toTuesday.Wishes can come true Wednesday/Thursday, thoughit’s more likely you’ll simply experience optimism andquiet social joys. Retreat, rest Friday/Saturday.
