Pipelineforum onThursday
Burnaby’s Stoney CreekEnvironment Committee is holdinga series of public forums on KinderMorgan’s pipeline expansion plan.
The first meeting is Thursday, June28, at 7 p.m. at the Jennifer AtchisonEnvironmental Centre, at 2730Beaverbrook Cres. Michael Hale ofPipe Up Network, a group opposed tothe pipeline expansion, will be speak-ing at the forum.
“We are trying to get some factsabout other perspectives on the pipelinewith a view of making this whole thingas transparent as a possible,” said AlanJames, secretary of the Stoney CreekEnvironment Committee. “The pipe-line currently crosses Stoney Creek, sowe have a very vested interest that ourcreek is not damaged by this process.”
James said the forums will be vid-eotaped and posted online at www.scec.ca.
“The main purpose is transparency. We don’t want Kinder Morgan to dosomething the public isn’t aware of,”he said.
Kinder Morgan is planning toincrease pipeline capacity from 300,000barrels a day to 750,000 by twinningthe existing Trans Mountain pipe-line, which runs oil from Alberta toBurnaby. The move would bring moretanker traffic to the Burrard Inlet, andKinder Morgan would have to doublecapacity at the existing tank farm onBurnaby Mountain. The company hasyet to apply to the National EnergyBoard for project approval.
For more information on the pipe-line forums, email [email protected].

A man helped free a Canadian iconentangled in fishing line and a barbedhook this week.
Ethan Bartolozzi was at Deer Lake onSunday, June 24, when he came across aCanada goose just lying on the ground. When he looked closer, he found a fish-ing line with a barbed hook stuck inthe goose. With the help of bystanders,Bartolozzi removed the hook and cutthe line, freeing the bird, which limpedaway.
“I guess they were quite lucky,” saidYolanda Brooks, from the Burnaby-basedWildlife Rescue Association of B.C. Theassociation generally advises people towrap animals up, put them in a box andbring them to the centre, where they canrehabilitate the creatures. Sometimeswhen animals are frightened, they canattack people, Brooks said.
“If the goose could walk away on itslegs, it was not a serious injury, and itwill probably heal itself,” she said. “Theygot the fishing wire off and did a goodjob helping the animal.”
Brooks said the association gets sev-eral cases a year of water birds entangledin fishing line, and sometimes it’s quiteserious.
“It sort of kills them slowly,” she said.“We always say to people who are outfishing to discard of the line properly.Don’t leave it lying around. It will killwildlife.”

As the B.C. Liberal govern-ment keeps emphasiz-ing its “Families First
agenda,” it is undermining itsown efforts on that front withthe ongoing train wreck over atCommunity Living B.C.
The latest “pil-lar” of the familiesagenda offers modestsupport for studentsin post-secondary institutionswhen it comes to paying offtheir student loans. For studentsfacing massive debt loads, thechanges will provide some reliefbut don’t come anywhere nearmaking a huge impact on a ser-ious problem.
Naturally, many people willcontrast that effort to help youngpeople with the troubles of agovernment agency that is alsosupposed to help development-ally challenged young adults.
The CLBC fiasco simplywon’t go away. The incentivebonuses for CLBC executiveswere supposed to be gone, but itturns out they aren’t.
Social Development MinisterStephanie Cadieux announcedlast October the bonus programwas being terminated. Endingthe program followed weeksof controversy and upheaval atCLBC, which included replacingits CEO and even the formercabinet minister responsible forthe agency.
So for months it had beenassumed the bonus program wastruly dead. It now turns out it
isn’t.The bonuses have simply
been rolled over into the basesalaries for the executives. Ontop of that, even though thebonus program was supposedlykilled back in October, the min-
istry has now admittedit continued until theend of the last fiscalyear (March 31).
This means those infamousbonuses will actually be paidout in July – nine months afterCadieux said the program wasended.
Now, we’re not talkingabout a lot of money here (about$300,000), but the issue hereis about credibility and beingupfront about what’s reallygoing on.
For a government that seemsto be held in contempt by a lotof people, this misleading situa-tion does further damage to itsattempts to establish its credibil-ity on so many issues.
It’s unclear how this messhas been allowed to fester. Is CLBC some kind of rogueagency rebuffing efforts by thecentral government to rein it in,or is this another example of agovernment in disarray?
I suspect it’s the latter ofthose two scenarios.
The two people who lookworst in this sorry controversyare Cadieux and Premier ChristyClark herself.

An unexpected backer for community papersWe’ve often pointed out the impor-
tance of a community newspaper to thecommunity it serves – and vice versa.
Despite the many avenues of commu-nication available today, and on so manydifferent levels, it remains atruism that the communitypaper is the best and mosteffective source of communitynews and information – theglue that holds a community together.
Despite the terabytes of informationthat are uploaded to the Internet dailythrough websites, blogs, social media
and personal mobile communications;despite the hundreds of television chan-nels, the multi-band dispersal of radio, and the multitude of regional, nationaland international newspapers, maga-
zines and newsletters avail-able to all of us – or perhapsbecause of the seeminglyinfinite variety of informationsources – the best place to find
out about Burnaby is still right here inthe Burnaby NOW.
It’s the one thing we can do betterthan anyone else.
It’s what we are. It’s who we are.But regardless of how obvious that
seems to us, it’s also pretty obvious thatwe have a vested interest in that mes-sage – which is why we’re pleased at thevote of confidence in community news-papers that was delivered by WarrenBuffett a few weeks ago.
Buffett, whose financial genius isgenerally recognized to be his ability tospot the obvious before nearly everyoneelse realizes how obvious it is, com-mented, “In towns and cities wherethere is a strong sense of community,
there is no more important institutionthan the local paper.”
And he put his money where hismouth is, purchasing 63 American com-munity newspapers for $143 million.
Buffett didn’t get to be a multibillion-aire for nothing.
The obvious has been stated by some-one with a habit of being heard.
We think that goes a long way toreinforcing what we’ve always believed:Community newspapers matter.
Thanks for making ours part of yourlife.
Clark’s efforts maynot be enough
Refugee health-care cuts OKDear Editor:
I am responding to your editorial about refugeeclaimants losing access to “free” health care (It’sa matter of compassion and common sense, OurView, Burnaby NOW, June 20.)
You are missing the point that the Canadian gov-ernment is facing some tough choices balancing thebudget, in particular, an aging population, whichincreases stress on the entitlement programs, whilecurrently, ongoing economic contraction reducesthe tax base. Simply put there are not enough peo-ple paying taxes to support all the programs we areso used to taking for granted.
It is a tough choice. Maintain health care and
education standards, ease of access for disabledand elderly, support for low-income citizenry andaccept a stream of refugee claimants from acrossthe world. Cutting defence programs will put thou-sands of Canadians out of work.
So obviously government makes the cuts whereit hurts the least. Or maybe Canadians are willing topay more taxes? While we are already struggling tomeet our ends? I don’t think so.
By the way, how could anyone consider a “refu-gee” from a European Union country to be a legiti-mate claimant is beyond comprehension. Hungaryis a modern democratic society, not without itsshare of problems, but in no way comparable toSomalia or Iraq, for example.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Clark, for her part, hasdismissed criticism overthe bonus sleight of handas mere “semantics” andhas blasted reporters forgetting things wrong.
It’s interesting to notethat no one in government– including the premier– sought to correct anyof the media stories lastOctober that reported thebonus program was overand done with right there.
It wasn’t until thebonus program resur-faced in the news that thisbecame an issue of seman-tics for the government.
It’s unlikely Cadieuxwill lose her cabinet postover this, although hercredibility has been dam-aged, and some critics willno doubt call for her resig-nation.
The core issue hereis the not unreasonableexpectation that a govern-
ment speaks the truthwhen asked and doesn’tmake misleading state-ments that come back tohaunt it.
That’s a big reasonwhy Clark’s cherishedFamilies First agenda ishaving so much troublegaining traction withthe voters. Holding B.C.Hydro rates down, estab-lishing a new family holi-day, making changes tostudent loans and creatingvarious new tax creditsmay all sound very niceto many people, but theyhave minimal politicalpayoff if people are turnedoff by a government theydon’t see as being truthfulabout things.
◆
The provincial govern-ment is looking for some-one to consult with vari-ous communities aboutchanges to B.C. Ferryoperations.
Whoever gets the jobbetter get some earplugs.
I suspect people wholive in small coastal com-munities will be apoplecticwhen it suddenly dawnson them that the chan-ges that are coming willinclude a fair number ofsailing reductions, par-ticularly on small routeswhere on occasion a ferrywill sail without a singlepassenger.
There’s going to be alot of screaming and hol-lering coming from thosevarious scenic seasidetowns that have longinsisted the ferry systemshould be viewed as aextension of the highwaysystem.
Unfortunately for them, not a lot of people outsideof those towns agree. Andthat means cuts are com-ing.

Clark: People are ‘turned off’
MLA: trust is goneDear Editor:
The revelation that bonuses for exec-utives at problem-plagued CommunityLiving B.C. were rolled into their salaries, instead of being eliminated like the min-ister promised, shows the Liberals simplycan’t be trusted to put the interests ofCLBC clients and their families ahead ofshort-term political fixes.
New Democrats have been calling foran external, independent review of theorganization since families first startedcoming forward with concerns about howtheir developmentally disabled loved oneswere being forced from their homes.
It’s no wonder the public was outragedwhen they learned CLBC executives weregetting paid bonuses for forcing vulner-able people from their homes. And thepublic has every right to be upset thatinstead of getting rid of these bonuseslike they promised, the Liberals quietlyallowed the bonuses to be rolled in to theirbase pay, resulting in permanent raises ofbetween 4.9 and 9.6 per cent for more than60 executives and managers.
We still don’t have answers about whythe Liberals thought it made sense to forcethrough 64 group home closures that jeop-ardized the health, safety and inclusion ofclients. We still need to assess how manypeople are stuck on long wait-lists forservices or are not being provided the ser-vices they need to live healthy, supported
and fulfilling lives. The Liberals have repeatedly promised
to fix issues at CLBC, but it is hard tobelieve anything they say when so manyof their promises turn out to be mislead-ing. That’s why New Democrats won’t besatisfied with anything less than an exter-nal, independent review that deals withthe problems plaguing CLBC. Externalreviews, such as the one undertaken byformer judge Ted Hughes on the stateof B.C.’s child-welfare system, have thepotential to be powerful tools for meaning-ful change.
After years of B.C. Liberal mismanage-ment of CLBC, including a near-constantshuffling of ministers, more empty prom-ises and excuses aren’t enough. We havea responsibility to treat developmentallydisabled people and their families withrespect, and right now the Liberals are fail-ing to take that responsibility seriously.
The executive bonus fiasco at CLBCis just more evidence of the fact that theLiberals have lost sight of what really mat-ters. Instead of constantly fighting the nextelection, the Liberals should be focussedon actually doing a good job of govern-ing. Vulnerable people and their familiesdepend on these services to lead happy, fulfilling lives.
If the Liberals wanted to improve pub-lic opinion about the job they were doingat CLBC, they should have simply done abetter job.

A private member’s billwith roots in Burnaby ontransgender and transsexu-al rights has risen again inParliament.
The NDP’s RandallGarrison, from theEsquimalt-Juan de Fucariding, resurrected a billto amend the CanadianHuman Rights Act to pro-hibit discrimination basedon gender identity and gen-der expression. It would alsochange the Criminal Codeof Canada to cover hatespeech against transgenderand transsexual people.
Former Burnaby MP BillSiksay was the first to intro-duce previous incarnationsof the bill in Parliament, but
most reached first-readingstage only. Before Siksayretired from politics in2011, he almost saw the billbecome law when it passedthird reading, but it died onpaper at the Senate stagewhen the last federal elec-tion was called.
Siksay was pleased thebill may finally becomelaw.
“I’m very excited aboutthe prospect of it finallypassing. It really looks posi-tive at this point,” he said inan interview with the NOW.“I think it’s part of the puz-zle … for improving thingsfor trans folks in Canada.”
The bill would protecttransgender and transsexu-al people from discrimina-tion in jobs that fall underfederal jurisdiction, such astransportation, banking andcommunications, and transpeople will be able to getproper identity documents.
Siksay was excited to seethe bill get strong supportfrom all parties, including
the Conservatives.“That made the differ-
ence for the bill in this read-ing. It was really excitingto see this move forward,”Siksay said. “It’s good newsin that sense.”
However, Siksay saidthere’s more to be done toprotect the rights of trans-gender and transsexualCanadians.
“Every day it changes, but if you talk to trans peo-ple you know discrimina-tion is a reality of their lives.I think a big part of it isaccess to health care andcoverage of gender reas-signment surgery and relat-ed therapies,” he said.
The controversial Station Square development passedthird reading at the Burnaby council meeting last night.
Plans for the project include five residential towers rang-ing in height from 35 to 57 storeys.
The development was the impetus for a petition byMetrotown resident Carly Franklin, who is asking thatBurnaby council cap highrise heights in the Metrotownarea.
Mayor Derek Corrigan said the feedback from the publichearing in September 2011 was primarily supportive of theproject.
“I thought when it came through, there might be issues inthe community because this is a major change that’s occur-ring,” he said. “But it’s been received very positively.”
Residents of the area seem to understand Station Squareis an important element in the neighbourhood, Corrigansaid.
“They’re seeing it to be a key development right in themiddle of Metrotown,” he added.
Staff has responded to issues raised by the communityregarding the development, he said.
The staff report on the rezoning application included thenotes from the public hearing in September.
A handful of people appeared at the hearing to supportor voice concerns about the development, while more than20 letters were sent supporting the rezoning application.
Two letters and one statement were also submitted, detailing residents’ concerns.
Burnaby’s advisory planning commission – whichadvises council on land use matters and reviews city zoningbylaw amendments – said it did not support the rezoningapplication. The commission said it supported the conceptof densification but was concerned about the scale of thedevelopment and its affect on local infrastructure.
The Burnaby Public Library board expressed concernsabout the development’s potential effect on the Bob Prittielibrary’s parkade, as well as traffic in the area.
Franklin was not able to attend Monday night’s councilmeeting but said in an email that she’s disappointed by thedecision to move forward on the project with the currenttower heights.
“The whole situation is very short-sighted,” she wrote,“make a quick buck at the expense of long-term livability.”

The history – both realand imagined – of CeperleyMansion is the inspirationfor a new exhibition at theBurnaby Art Gallery.
The Gaze of History:PortraitsfromtheCollectionwith Drawing Installationby Elizabeth MacKenzie isa new exhibition that runsat the gallery from July 6 toAug. 26.
It includes the work ofcontemporary Vancouverartist Elizabeth MacKenzie, along with a selection ofportrait drawings andother works on paper fromthe gallery’s collection.
MacKenzie is creating asite-specific drawing instal-lation in both the mainand upper-floor galleries, exploring the history ofCeperley Mansion beforeit became the Burnaby ArtGallery in 1967.
Her work will representthe real and imagined facesof former residents of themansion, from 1910 to 1966,hand-drawn by MacKenziewith graphite powder onthe walls of the gallery.
“My research in thearchives has revealedthat there is no continu-ous, accurate history ofthe residents of CeperleyMansion,” MacKenzie saidin a press release. “Thereare both real and imag-ined stories of the house
and the people who havelived there. This drawinginstallation is about an art-ist responding to the fasci-nating history of CeperleyMansion.”
Alongside MacKenzie’swork will be works fromthe gallery’s collectionthat explore the conven-tions of portraiture andthe exchange of the gazethrough drawing, print-making, photography andpainting.
Darrin Martens, thedirector-curator of the gal-lery, said the two sets ofwork will complementeach other.
“MacKenzie’s inventiveapproach to the portraitsfrom the gallery’s collec-tion will complement andcontrast with the walldrawings,” he said. “Theworks from the collec-tion also have their ownhistory, and this exhibi-tion offers the residents ofBurnaby and visitors alikean opportunity to projecttheir own interpretation ofthe faces. The Gaze willengage them with the real
and imagined history ofCeperley Mansion and ofthe portrait genre itself.”
For more aboutMacKenzie, see her blogat blogs.eciad.ca/elizabethmackenzie.

St. Jean says there areusually 100 to 120 peoplewho show up, some fromas far away as Richmondand Delta. The dances areon July 10, 17, 24, 31 andon Aug. 14 and 28, alwaysfrom 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.There’s a half-hour breakin the evening for snacksand refreshments, andthere will be wine and beerfor sale on July 10 and 31.Volunteers from the Bonsor
55-Plus Society help withthe dances.
St. Jean says the bands areall local and well known inthe “55-plus world.” Theyplay a variety of music:jazz, polka and swing, forinstance.
Anyone 55 or older is wel-come to attend. The dancesattract both couples andsingles. Admission is $6,although people who havea City of Burnaby member-ship card can get in for $5.(The card is available byregistering through Bon-sor.)
“Even if you don’t knowhow to dance, lots of peoplecome for the music andto socialize,” St. Jean says, adding it’s good exer-ciseand a chance to meet newpeople.
Besides being a great socialactivity, dancing is knownto bring health benefi ts tothose who brave the dancefloor.
Since dancing qualifi es asan aerobic exercise, it can
help with weight loss andreduces the risk of cardio-vascular disease.
According to a studypublished in the NewEngland Journal of Medi-cine, researchers examinedthe relationship betweenleisure activities and therisk of dementia with 469people, aged 75 or older.“Among leisure activities, reading, playing boardgames, playing musicalinstruments and dancingwere associated with areduced risk of dementia,”the researchers said in theirpublished results.
The American Heart Asso-ciation asserts that dancinghelps people with chronicheart failure, providingbenefi ts similar to thosefrom aerobic exercise.Bonsor’s dances are onthroughout the summer.
For more information, callthe seniors’ counter at Bon-sor at 604-297-4580.Thecentre is at 6550 BonsorAve.

Eight years ago, JohnLaurin, the generalmanager of food ser-
vice facilities on behalf ofthe Simon Fraser StudentSociety, needed to opena new store that offeredhealthy, inexpensive foodquickly for students.
And so was born TheLadle, the soup shop thathas grown to offer morecomfort food dishes thatwon’t hurt the pocketbooksof most students.
Pair up a soup with agrilled cheese sandwich, shepherd’s pie or good oldmacaroni and cheese andyou have good food fast.
Most dishes are under$5 and most combos areunder $9, with at least eightdifferent soups on offermost days.
“We’re offering greatvalue, and it’s some prettyhealthy stuff,” said Laurinas he pointed out the spe-cialty mango chickpeacurry soup that is one ofhis personal favourites.“The best thing about thesesoups is that they can goover rice or noodles so youcan have an even biggermeal.”
On the day we satdown with Laurin, chef J.P.Karwowski and assistantKim Vu, the offerings onthe soup side included:tomato tarragon, spicypotato tomato, mental len-til, broccoli, Thai veggie, cauliflower coconut curry, vegetarian chili and mangochickpea curry.
On the food side, theburritos were flying off the
shelf, as were the grilledcheese sandwiches. Theshepherd’s pie and maca-roni and cheese were alsomoving well, as serverJai McCubbin and JoeHepburn were very busy.
Hepburn, studyingarchaeology, suggests wetry the Thai veggie.
“Thai food is verypopular on this campus,”said Laurin. “This is a verypopular choice.”
I also quite enjoyed thetomato tarragon and themango chickpea curry, which, to my mind, werethe best at mixing sweetwith sour and spicy.
By ordering combos– which come in at under$9 a head – you get a nicefood offering and a prettyhefty bowl of soup. Bringyour own cup or bowl and
you get another 10 per centoff.
For the vegetarian set,the veggie chili was certain-ly filling and so were thetofu nuggets – “They’re justlike chicken nuggets, exceptwith tofu,” explainedHepburn.
While The Ladle isgeared toward SFU stu-dents, Laurin said SFU staffand anybody on campus iswelcome to give it a try.
“Who doesn’t love goodhealthy food that’s fast andaffordable?” he said.
The Ladle is located inthe food court of the studentunion building on the mainconcourse of SFU’s Burnabycampus. It’s open from 10a.m. on weekdays. In summerit closes at 4 p.m., but duringthe rest of the school year, it’sopen until 7 p.m.

When you thinkabout the keyfactors to good
health, what comes tomind? Obviously, healthyhabits, good genes andluck. How about your rela-tionships?
And when you thinkabout your most importantrelationships, you mayconsider first your par-ents, partner, siblings orchildren. What about yourfriends?
Of course, there aremany types of friendships. Not all Facebook friendsare equal. They could beclassmates, neighbours, party friends, drinkingbuddies, bowling friends, fishing pals, running part-ners or co-workers.
With each, you mayshare some common inter-ests and varying degreesof connectedness and inti-macy.
Through the storiesshared by my patients,I see the impact ofunhealthy friends. Manyhave described one-sidedrelationships where theyhave adopted the role ofthe giver or the listener.
When my patients needsomeone to talk to, theycome to me because theirfriends do not reciprocate.
Some friends perpetu-ate unhealthy behaviour. You may share “goodtimes” such as partyingand drinking together, andtogether you “normalize”drug or alcohol abuse.
Every week, I surpriseyoung men and womenwhen I inform them thatthree standard alcoholicdrinks (a regular glassof wine, a shot of spirits,or a can of beer) is thehealthy single day limitfor a man’s liver while twodrinks is the limit for awoman. Exceeding that onthe weekend with friendsofficially makes them“binge drinkers.”
Other unhealthy friendscan encourage you tospend beyond your means– not just on food anddrink but on entertainmentand the luxury items thatyou neither need or canafford.
Your friends may also
lead you to believe that agrowing credit card debt isnormal and reasonable.
Your friends shape yourbeliefs. They can perpetu-ate narrow-mindedness,racism, prejudice and sex-ism.
So what are the quali-ties of a healthy friend-ship? I need only think ofthe special friends whohave enriched my life. Icall them my soul friends. We are kindred spirits, and though we may havedifferent backgrounds andjobs, we share core beliefsabout what is good and adeep abiding love for oneanother.
Our relationships arereciprocal, each gives andtakes, and each listens. With my best friends,I don’t even keep trackof who gives more. Myfriend, Steve and I eachgrab for the dinner bill. Each of us feels we aregetting the better dealand want to give more inreturn. It feels better thanfair.
Soul friends know youbest; they see deeply intoyour spirit. They recognizethe best in you, and theybring it out. My friendStan reminds me of mydreams and challenges meto live them.
With best friends, youcan pick up where youleft off even if you haven’ttalked for months.
In spite of the unpre-dictable changes in ourlives and our preoccupa-tion with family and work,I never grow apart frommy childhood friends,Stew, Peter, Ron and Mike.
Best friends see all ofyou – including you atyour worst moments. Theyaccept and love you any-way.
They will tell you thetruth even if you don’tlike it.
They will organize anintervention if you’re outof line, destroying yourselfor your life.
Appreciate and nurtureyour soul friends.
They are the rareand precious diamondsthrough which uncondi-tional love shines.
They bring out the bril-liance, beauty and mean-ing in your life.

Dear Tom and Ray:My son is driving a 2001
Chrysler Concorde, and it’snow on its last leg. He drivesfast – he just got a speedingticket for going 96 m.p.h.! Hegoes to college out of state, and it’s a long, boring drivehome; that’s the excuse I gotfor the ticket. He also toldme that’s not the fastest he’sdriven! He’s always in ahurry – jackrabbit starts andlast-second braking. Doesthe way he drives affect thelongevity of the engine? I’mpretty sure it does. I wanthim to understand how tomake a car last.
– RichardRAY: We actually don’twant him to understandwhat makes a car last,Richard. It’s guys like himwho keep us in businessat the garage and allow usto buy a bigger boat everyspring.TOM: Of course the wayhe drives affects the lon-gevity of the car. In fact,it can affect the longevityof everything – includinghim!RAY: We wrote a pam-phlet called Ten Ways YouMay be Ruining Your CarWithout Even Knowing It.And guess what’s No. 1 onour list? Driving like yourson does!
TOM: In fact, next timeyou see him, ask him if wecan put his picture on thecover of our next versionof the pamphlet.RAY: The reason thatjackrabbit starts and hardbraking reduce a car’s lifeis because those forces(compared with startingand stopping gently) putextra stress on every singlepart of the car – becausethey’re all attached to eachother.TOM: Right. You slam onthe gas pedal and stresseverything down the line:the pistons, the connectingrods, the crankshaft, thetransmission, the differ-ential, then the axles andthe wheels. And once thecar takes off, you not onlystress the suspension parts, but you’re also looseningup the welds that hold thecar together and hasten-ing the day when your carbecomes the proverbialbucket of bolts.RAY: In the pamphlet, weuse this analogy: Imaginethat you’re walking downthe street and you need toturn around and walk inthe other direction.TOM: Which approachwill harm you less: stop-ping, turning around andthen starting to walk theother way?RAY: Or getting slammedby an NFL linebacker andjolted suddenly into mov-ing in the other direction?TOM: They both get thejob done, but if it wereyour body, which wouldyou prefer, 50 times a day?RAY: So you need to drillsome sense into this kid,
Richard – first, for his ownsafety and the safety ofothers who have to sharethe road with him. Andsecond, for the longevityof his car. In our experi-ence, nothing helps drivehome a point like havingto pay the cost of one’sown stupidity.TOM: You mean like myalimony payments?RAY: Exactly. That’s oneexample. But when ayoung driver has to payfor his own repair bills, hisown insurance (includingthe surcharges he gener-ates with speeding tickets)and his own replacementcar once he destroys theone he’s got, he may sud-denly get religion.TOM: After his secondbrake job in six monthsand a transmission failureor two, he might eventu-ally ask you if he can readthat little pamphlet onemore time. Good luck,Richard. And if nothingelse, slow him down.
Changing your oil regu-larly is the cheapest insur-ance you can buy for yourcar, but how often should youchange it? Find out by order-ing Tom and Ray’s pamphlet,Ten Ways You May BeRuining Your Car WithoutEven Knowing It! High and lowLakers remainin first place
The Burnaby Lakers gotback to playing more like afirst-place senior A lacrosseteam.
The Lakers put theworst of an 8-5 Thursdaynight loss to the NewWestminster Salmonbelliesbehind them, and, althoughthere were some anxiousmoments thefollowing day, stole an 11-10overtime victo-ry from the vis-iting CoquitlamAdanacs tohang on to ashareof topspotin the WesternL a c r o s s eAsscociation.
The resultkept Burnabyabreast ofV i c t o r i a ,12-10 winners of theSalmonbellies on Friday,and Langley, 12-4 losers tothe Adanacs on Saturday,atop the seven-team league,all with 12 points apiece.
Coquitlam moved into afourth-place tie with NewWestminster, both with 5-5-0 records, further crowd-ing the WLA leaderboard.
On Thursday,Burnaby was stifled by aSalmonbellie-like defenceof old.
But at home, CarltonSchuss had a breakoutgame for Burnaby, scor-ing his first four goalsas a Laker, including thesparking marker in OT thatignited a three-goal-win-ning rally.
In a game full of momen-tum swings, Burnaby over-came a 3-1 first-perioddeficit with six consecutivegoals against the Adanacsin the middle period, including the go-aheadgoal by second overall draftpick Jackson Decker andSchuss’s hat-trick tally.
But Coquitlam tied itup, coming back with fourunanswered goals in thefinal 20 minutes to send thecontest to extra time.
In OT, Coquitlam lookedas if they might come awaywith the win, when DarylVeltman and Kevin Olsonof Burnaby scored back-to-back goals 15 secondsapart, giving the A’s a two-
goal advantage.But Schuss and Chase
Williams scored to knot thescore before rookie transi-tion Justin Salt, on an assistfrom Mike Brascia, got thegame-winner in the finalminute of play.
Joe Bell got the win ingoal for Burnaby after fac-ing 50 Adanacs’ shots.
Scott Jones also posteda four-pointnight forBurnaby.
In NewWest, Burnabygave up twos h o r t h a n d -ed markersto the homeSalmonbellies’Iljia Gajic,including theteam’s league-high 12th thisseason.
B u r n a b ygame star
Colton Clark came back offinjury with a hat trick in afour-point outing, includ-ing a pair of second-periodcounters that momentarilytied the contest at 4-4. Butthe Laker offence had littleelse to cheer about againstthe solid backstoppingfrom Tyler Richards in theNew West net.
“If we deny the otherteam the middle and letTyler (Richards) see theshooting lanes, he’s goingto stop 99 per cent of theshots,” said New Westdefender Wade Dewolff.
“When we got to 4-4,it should have given usa lift and it didn’t,” saidBurnaby head coach BobJohnston. “The team wasvery quiet tonight – quieton the bench and quiet onthe floor – we just didn’tget a spark to get us levelin the game.”
That spark will be need-ed as the Lakers host the6-2-0 Victoria Shamrocksat home on Friday night, before enjoying time offover the upcoming CanadaDay week. Game time is7:45 p.m.
Off the ruck: Canada scrum half Ed Fairhurst, with ball, keeps the play alive in a 31-12 win over Georgiain an international men’s exhibition rugby match at Swangard Stadium on Saturday.

Third time lucky for Denver D-manBurnaby defenceman Joey
LaLeggia has been waiting a longtime to hear his name called.
The 5-10, 180-pound Universityof Denver blueliner finally got thenews he has been working so hardto achieve, when he was selected inthe fifth round, 123rd overall, by theEdmonton Oilers on the second dayof the NHL entry draft on Saturday– the day before his 20th birthday
“I was very excited and a little bitin shock as well, because when youget news like that, it puts you backa bit,” said LaLeggia on Sunday.“I’ve been aspiring to that for a longtime.”
Last year, LaLeggia was leftuntaken as an 18-year-old after sevenrounds in the NHL draft despite fin-ishing fifth in overall scoring andleading all defencemen in the B.C.Hockey League with 62 assists and82 total points for a second straightseason with the Penticton Vees.
As a Burnaby Winter Club minorprospect, LaLeggia was also over-looked in the Western HockeyLeague bantam draft.
Seeing his name topping the listin the fifth round of NHL draftresults was belated recognition forall the hard work he has put inthrough the years.
“Third time’s a charm,” saidLaLeggia, who perhaps more thanmany talented young hockey play-ers had to keep believing in himselfdespite a surprising lack of recogni-tion at times.
The former captain of the
Northwest Giants major midgetteam led the Burnaby-based squadto back-to-back B.C. championshipswith 95 career points.
Two seasons later, he was namedthe BCHL Interior conference juniorA MVP and top defenceman.
At Denver, LaLeggia was rec-ognized as the national DivisionI rookie of the year last season, leading all first-year D-men with38 goals, including 11 goals. Hewas also named to the All-WesternCollegiate first team and all-rookieteam, as well as league rookie of theyear.
“It was a great fit for me,” saidLaLeggia. “They are in need on the
back end and I had a lot of feedbackfrom them. It’s nice to go some-where that you’re wanted.”
LaLeggia barely had time to blowout the candles on his birthdaycake before flying off Monday toEdmonton for the Oilers’ week-longdevelopment camp.
LaLeggia fully expects to be backat Denver for his sophomore seasonwith the Pioneers. But that is notwhere he expects his dream to end.
“I’m still going to be workinghard to strive to be in the best shapeI can and have my best hockey sea-son,” he said. “It’s great motivationto keep working hard and one dayget to be an Oiler.”

Lakers get two inswap with Thunder
The Burnaby Lakersmade themselves a littlebit better following a two-for-one trade, but they stillhave a long way to go.

“I was playing defencein Langley and I wanteda shot on offence, so Imade the most of it,” saidBuick, who welcomes theopportunity to help turnthings around in Burnaby.“I thought to myself, I’mgoing to get my shot inBurnaby.”
Buick’s first-ever juniorA goal silenced a 4-0 NewWest run, helped along bya twice successful four-minute power play handedout to the Lakers two min-utes earlier.
Buick’s second ofthe game came midwaythrough the third periodon a loose ball in front ofthe goal. He also assistedon Burnaby’s second goalof the game.

Each number can appear only once in each row, columnand box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues alreadyprovided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
